What kind of engine oil is better than VAZ 2106. Domestic cars need high-quality lubrication. Oil selection for old cars

home / miscellanea

The VAZ 2107 car was produced in our country for almost 30 years, from 1982 to 2012. From the very beginning of production, it was positioned as a luxury version of the VAZ 2105 with a more powerful and reliable engine. In addition, this classic sedan featured a more comfortable cabin with comfortable front seats, a redesigned dashboard, and a slightly more presentable exterior with more chrome trim.

Most of the VAZ 2107 cars, produced before the beginning of the 21st century, were equipped on a conveyor belt with 1.5 liter 77-horsepower VAZ 2103 carburetor engines. Cars produced after 2000 were most often equipped with VAZ 21067 injection power units.

Many owners of VAZ 2107 are interested in the question of which oil is better to pour into the engine of this classic sedan in order to extend its resource before overhaul. According to experts, the answer to this question is quite simple, it is better to fill the engine with the engine oil that has received the approval of the manufacturer's plant.

Eradication of illiteracy

If you are interested in what kind of oil the engineers of the Volga Automobile Plant recommend pouring into the power units of classic Zhiguli - mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic, then you are wrongly formulating the question. The manufacturer's recommendations concern only the quality standards that the filled engine oil must meet.

Many people notice that product canisters usually have markings like API SH or API SJ / CF. You should pay attention to it in the first place, since it is this marking that informs about the quality of the product.

API is the abbreviation for American Petroleum Institute. This institute tests whether an engine oil meets certain quality standards for a large number of indicators, including:

  • the amount of deposits remaining on engine parts after standard service life;
  • washing ability;
  • temperature characteristics;
  • toxicity;
  • corrosive activity;
  • effective protection of engine parts from friction.

The abbreviations SJ or CF stand for the following.

  1. S and C - categories of engines for which the oil is intended. Lubricants for gasoline powertrains are designated with the letter S, and lubricants for diesel engines with the letter C.
  2. J and F are the quality of the oil performance. The further from the letter A in alphabetical order, the higher the characteristics of the product.

Engineers of the Volga Automobile Plant require that an injector be poured into the engine of a VAZ 21074 car with a lubricant that at least complies with the API SG / CD standard. Moreover, if you come across a product that meets the API SH, SJ or SL standard, then it is better to fill it.

Quite often, when buying engine oil, motorists first of all pay attention to the classification of a product according to the methodology of the United States Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). However, such a classification only determines the characteristics of the viscosity of the product and does not in any way inform about its quality.

Methods for determining the need for replacement, filling volumes and expert advice

If an oil pressure sensor is installed on the engine of your car, then this greatly facilitates the determination of the moment after which a scheduled lubrication change in the VAZ 2107 engine is required. To determine the exact moment, you need to pay attention to the lubricant pressure in various ranges of the power unit. Usually, when the lubricant decomposes, the VAZ 2107 oil pressure indicator (installed on all cars manufactured before 1988) shows an increase in pressure in the system during start-up and prolonged operation of the power unit.

This is due to the dilution and boiling of the lubricant in the crankcase of the power unit. If the oil pressure sensor is not on your car, then you will have to rely on the recommendations of the automaker. AvtoVAZ engineers advise changing the lubricant in the engine every 6,000 km when driving short distances and every 10,000 kilometers with constant driving over long distances.

Many owners of classic cars are interested in the question of how much oil should be poured into the lubrication system of the power unit of their favorite car. According to the manufacturer's information, the volume of engine oil in the engine lubrication system is about 4 liters, or more precisely, 3750 milliliters, including the lubricant in the filter. Expert advice.

  1. When changing the oil, it is better to fill the brand that was poured into the crankcase before.
  2. It is not recommended to pour synthetics into old power units, since it washes away deposits that cover microcracks in the oil sump.
  3. It is better to pour synthetics into a new factory engine that has been run-in. In a good engine, synthetics are only welcome, they will not let it overheat and extend its resource.

Regardless of how long your car has traveled, if you change consumables and operating fluids on time, your car will delight you with its reliability for many years.

Choosing a lubricant based on the type of engine and the degree of its wear is the most correct approach. The engine oil must be selected for the specific motor. The first thing to find out before buying is:

Vazovskaya six in all its glory

  • year of engine creation and its type;
  • operating conditions of the machine;
  • the minimum temperature of the region in which the car is used;
  • the degree of wear of the motor;
  • the presence of hydraulic compensators in the valve clearance adjustment system (new engines have small clearances, so they need light and flowing oil, especially in winter);
  • what materials were used in the engine and whether they are compatible with synthetic motor oxols.

In many old VAZ models, there are parts that cannot tolerate synthetic components. For example, old nitrile rubber seals deteriorate very quickly and lose their tightness. This problem can be solved by replacing all oil seals and caps with imported fluoroelastomer or acrylate rubber. On the VAZ 2106, produced after the 80s, just such materials are already used.

It is a mistake to think that replacing all old rubber parts is a good thing. Oil seals and caps made of expensive rubber absolutely do not tolerate solvents, including gasoline. Old VAZ engines often have a faulty power system, which is why gasoline seeps into the lubricant.

When choosing an oil for a VAZ 2106, look at the car's manual. It is necessary to select a product that fully complies with the manufacturer's specifications. If the auto chemistry specified in the service book is not available in the store, you should use the recommendations of API, ACEA (CCMC), ILSAC.

Composition and viscosity: selection rules

Huge range of lubricants

When choosing an oil for a VAZ 2106, do not forget that synthetic and semi-synthetic products, as a rule, contain a large amount of additives that may be incompatible and negatively affect engine parts. If the manufacturer recommends pouring in a semi-synthetic lubricant, do not fill in a mineral lubricant - you can simply ruin the engine. And buying synthetics will become an unnecessary waste of money. But it is not recommended to buy cheap engine oil for the VAZ 2106 either. The lubricant for the engine of such a machine should be in the middle price category.

Two indicators are used to indicate the viscosity of a lubricant. For example, the label says: 5W-50. The first number is the viscosity of the product at temperatures below 0 degrees. The lower this indicator, the higher the viscosity of the lubricant. Winter oxols are characterized by the highest viscosity.

The second number indicates the viscosity at elevated temperatures. Accordingly, the higher the load on the unit, the higher the temperature and the higher the viscosity of the oil. If a product does not possess a sufficient level of this characteristic, it will not be able to create a protective film on the surface of parts.

For machines that are subject to severe stress, the best product classifications are 0W-50, 5W-50, 10W-50 and above. If you practice a moderate driving style, then Oxol, which has a viscosity class of 40 at high temperatures, will be optimal for your car.

In winter, VAZ 2106 engines work great if oils with a viscosity class of 5-10 are used at zero degrees. You should not use a product designed for 40-degree frost if the average winter temperature in your region is minus 10 degrees.

Old grease type designations

Choose according to the key characteristics of the grease

When selecting oxols, the owners of the VAZ 2106 often come across old Soviet designations and classifications. Let's try to figure them out. So, the main document regulating and classifying motor oils and valid to this day is GOST 17479.1-85.

Depending on the quality, six groups are distinguished according to the degree of engine boost and its type:

  • Group A for non-powered motors.
  • B - for low-powered.
  • B - for medium-forced.
  • G - for highly accelerated units.
  • D - for highly accelerated diesel engines.
  • E - for stationary and marine diesel engines operating on sulfur-containing fuel.

Lubricants B, C and D, in turn, are divided into carburetor (index 1) and diesel (index 2). If the index is not affixed, then the product is suitable for both types of motor.

The viscosity index according to the old GOST was evaluated in centistokes at an engine temperature of 100 degrees. The lower the value, the higher the viscosity of the grease. For example, the abbreviation M12G means that engine oil is suitable for high-performance gasoline or diesel units, and 12 cSt is a typical summer viscosity. In winter, it is preferable to fill the VAZ 2106 engine with oxol, which has the designation M8G. The addition of the letter Z denotes a thickening grease that can be used in the middle lane all year round.

The Soviet classification is now rarely used, since it is rather cumbersome and difficult to pronounce. The terms "low or high powered engines" themselves are not very accurate. That is why the classification of lubricants by performance (API) and viscosity grade (SAE) has taken root more.

All motorists know that by filling the engine with good engine oil, they extend the life of the car. VAZ 2106 engines are no exception, so it is worth approaching the selection of lubricant very responsibly. After all, the lower the quality of the oil, the more the engine is subject to wear.

With the onset of frost, many car owners are interested in the question of what oil to pour into the VAZ engine for the winter. For different regions of our country, oils of the marking 10W-40, 0W-30, 5W30 or 5W-40 are used. Each of them has different viscosity characteristics and minimum operating temperature. So, oil marked 0W can be operated at a minimum temperature of -35 ° C, 5W - at -30 ° C, and 10W - up to -25 ° C, respectively. Also, the choice depends on the type of base oil base. Since mineral lubricants have a high freezing point, they are not used. Instead of them, synthetic or, in extreme cases, semi-synthetic oils are used. This is due to the fact that they are more modern and have high performance characteristics.

What oil to choose for the winter

Comparison of viscosity of oils

The main parameter that allows you to answer the question of which oil is best to pour into the VAZ engine for the winter is the viscosity according to the SAE standard. According to this document, there are eight winter (from 0W to 25W) and 9 summer. Everything is simple here. From the first number in the marking of winter oil, before the letter W (the letter stands for the abbreviated English word Winter - winter), you need to subtract the number 35, as a result of which you get the value of negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Based on this, it is impossible to say for sure which oil is better than 0W30, 5W30 or some other in winter. To do this, you need to carry out the appropriate calculations, and find out the lower permissible temperature of their operation. For example, 0W30 oil is suitable for more northern regions, where the temperature drops to -35 ° C in winter, and 5W30, respectively, to -30 ° C. Their summer characteristics are the same (characterized by the number 30), so in this context it is unimportant. Occasionally, you can find engine oils on sale whose characteristics, in particular viscosity, are indicated in accordance with GOST 17479.1-2015. There are similarly four classes of winter oils. So, the winter indices of the specified GOST correspond to the following values of the SAE standards: 3 - 5W, 4 - 10W, 5 - 15W, 6 - 20W.

If there is a very large temperature difference in your region in winter and summer, then you can use two different oils with different viscosities in different seasons (preferably from the same manufacturer). If the difference is small, then it is quite possible to get by with a universal all-season oil.

However, when choosing one or another oil, one cannot be guided only by low-temperature viscosity. There are other sections in the SAE standard that describe the characteristics of oils. The oil you have chosen must necessarily meet in all parameters and standards the requirements that the manufacturer of your car imposes on it. You will find the relevant information in the documentation or manual for the VAZ car.

If you plan to travel or move to a colder region of the country in winter or autumn, be sure to consider this when choosing engine oil.

Which oil for winter is better synthetic or semi-synthetic

The question of which oil is better - synthetic or semi-synthetic is relevant at any time of the year. However, with regard to negative temperatures, in this context, the above-mentioned low-temperature viscosity is much more important. As for the type of oil, it is fair to say that "synthetics" better protect the parts of the VAZ 2110 engine at any time of the year. And given that after prolonged downtime, their geometric dimensions change (albeit only slightly), protection for them during start-up is extremely important. Based on the above, the following conclusion can be drawn. The first thing you should pay attention to is the low temperature viscosity value. The second is the recommendations of your vehicle manufacturer. Third, if you have a modern, expensive foreign car with a new (or recently refurbished engine), then it makes sense to use synthetic oil. If you are the owner of a medium or budget car and do not want to overpay, then "semi-synthetics" are quite suitable for you. As for mineral oil, it is not recommended to use it, because in severe frosts it becomes very thick and does not protect the engine from damage and / or wear.

Motor oil for the winter which is better for gasoline engines

Now let's look at the TOP-5 oils for gasoline engines popular among domestic motorists (although some of them are universal, that is, they can also be poured into diesel engines). The rating was compiled on the basis of operational characteristics, in particular, frost resistance. Naturally, there is a huge variety of lubricants on the market today, so this list can be expanded many times over. If you have your opinion on this matter, please share it in the comments.

Also, when choosing an oil, you need to pay attention to the following nuance. As the engine wears out (its mileage increases), the gaps between its individual parts increase. And this leads to the fact that it becomes necessary to use a thicker oil (for example, 5W instead of 0W). Otherwise, the oil will not perform its assigned functions and protect the engine from wear. However, when assessing, it is necessary to take into account not only the mileage itself, but also the condition of the engine (it is clear that it depends on the operating conditions of the car, the driver's driving style, and so on).

What kind of oil to fill in a diesel engine in winter

For diesel engines, all of the above considerations are also valid. First of all, it is necessary to focus on the value of the low-temperature viscosity and the recommendations of the manufacturer. However, it is better not to use multigrade oil for diesel engines. The fact is that such engines need more protection from the lubrication side, and the latter “ages” much faster. Therefore, for them, the selection in terms of viscosity and other characteristics (in particular, the standards and tolerances of the automaker) is more critical.

On some vehicles, the oil used in the engine is stamped on the dipsticks.

So, according to the SAE standard for diesel engines, everything is similar to gasoline engines. That is, the winter oil must be selected according to its viscosity, in this case, low-temperature. In accordance with the technical characteristics and reviews of car owners of cars with diesel engines, the following brands of motor oils are a good option for the winter.

It should also be remembered that most of the commercially available motor oils are universal, that is, those that can be used in both gasoline and diesel engines. Therefore, when buying, first of all, you need to pay attention to the characteristics indicated on the canister, while knowing the tolerances and requirements of the manufacturer of your car. Conclusion... The two main factors on the basis of which you should choose one or another oil for gasoline or diesel engines in winter are the requirements of the automaker, as well as the low-temperature viscosity. And it, in turn, must be taken into account based on the climatic conditions of residence, in particular, how low the temperature drops in winter. And of course, don't forget about the tolerances. If the selected oil meets all of the listed parameters, you can safely buy it. As for a specific manufacturer, it is impossible to give specific recommendations here. Currently, most of the popular brands in the world produce products of approximately the same quality and meet the same standards. Therefore, pricing and marketing come to the fore. If you do not want to overpay, then on the market you can easily find a worthy trademark under which oil of quite acceptable quality is sold.

One of the main types of maintenance work for VAZ cars, no matter what model and year of manufacture, is the replacement of working fluids, primarily oil. Moreover, the change of lubricants should be carried out in all components of the car where the lubricant is used. First of all, this is the engine and transmission parts.

Since in our latitudes there is a seasonal climate change with strong temperature fluctuations, the question often arises of which oil to pour into the VAZ engine in winter, because the change of season also affects the properties of the lubricant. And this issue should be somewhat sorted out.

Viscosity

To begin with, one of the main parameters of a lubricant intended for filling into power plants is its viscosity. This characteristic determines the fluidity of the oil under different operating conditions. It should be fluid while cold (to ensure ease of starting the engine) and retain viscosity, that is, not drain from the surface, after heating. It is the viscosity of the oil that is one of the main selection criteria. To designate lubricants by viscosity, a whole classification has been introduced - SAE.

According to her, all oils are divided into:

  • Summer;
  • Winter;
  • All-season;

The first two options are relatively rare in our country, they are more intended for use in conditions of year-round stable temperature indicators. For the summer version, the main criterion is the retention of viscosity at high temperatures, and fluidity at low temperatures is practically not taken into account. And everything is exactly the opposite for the winter version.

Since we have large seasonal temperature drops, it is simply inappropriate to use separately summer and winter oils. Therefore, it is more rational to use multigrade lubricants. Moreover, they are also different in viscosity, so you should also choose the right engine oil for the winter at the VAZ.

An index consisting of numbers and letters is used to indicate the viscosity of multigrade engine oils according to the SAE classification. Examples of such markings are 5W-40, 0W-30, 10W-50, etc. The first part of the marking indicates the viscosity at low temperatures. In fact, this indicator indicates at what minimum temperature threshold the lubricant will remain fluid enough for the oil pump to "push" it through the system. And in this case, the lower the number of the first part of the marking, the more frost the grease will withstand. So, oil with the 5W index will remain fluid at temperatures up to -30 degrees, but for 15W the maximum temperature threshold is already -20 degrees C.

The second part of the marking indicates the viscosity at high temperatures. Here, the opposite is true, the larger the number, the higher the viscosity after heating.

To choose the viscosity of engine oil for the winter on a VAZ-2114 or any other model, you just need to decide on the temperature in different seasons. So, for northern latitudes, one should first of all be guided by low-temperature viscosity, that is, by the first part of the SAE index. If in winter the temperature drops to -30 degrees. From and below, it is better to use oils of 0W or at least 5W. Using a grease with a higher index will lead to the fact that in severe frosts, the oil will be so thick that the starter cannot crank the crankshaft. But for southern latitudes, you should be guided more by the second part of the index, that is, by high-temperature viscosity.

For latitudes with a temperate climate, oil for the winter on a VAZ-2106 (in general, it does not matter which model) will have to look for a compromise so that the lubricant remains liquid in winter and viscous in summer. Optimal for this climate is oil with an index of 5W-40.

Oil type

It was considered which oil to pour into the VAZ 2110 in winter in terms of such a parameter as viscosity.

But you should also consider the type of lubricant. There are three of them:

  • Mineral;
  • Synthetic;
  • Semi-synthetic;

Mineral oil for the winter VAZ-2109 Is the worst case scenario. Such a lubricant, made by refining petroleum products, has insufficiently good performance indicators, especially low-temperature viscosity. That is, its thickening threshold is significantly higher than that of other types of oil. But here it is worth noting that such an oil for use as a lubricant is practically not found. But on the other hand, it is often used as a basis for flushing fluids.

Synthetic oil- one of the most optimal options for the power plants of modern cars. It is obtained by synthesis, during which certain parameters are set for the lubricant, including viscosity. Therefore, when deciding what kind of oil to pour in the VAZ-2114 in winter, preference should be given to the synthetic one.

Polysynthetic Is a mixture of mineral and synthetic oils. In terms of performance, it is inferior to "synthetics" (but at a lower price), but surpasses "mineral water". Therefore, using such oil in the VAZ-21083 engine or in models of the classic family is a completely acceptable option.

It is these two criteria - viscosity and type that should be taken into account when determining which oil to fill for the winter in a VAZ-2115 or any other model.

Naturally, you should also pay attention to the manufacturer. You should not buy lubricant from questionable points of sale, little-known manufacturers. When choosing oil, it is better not to save money.

Finally, let's go over the transmission. In VAZ classic models, lubricant is poured into the gearbox and gearbox, and starting with the VAZ-2108 model and above, only in the gearbox (they do not have a gearbox). Moreover, these units use a special oil - transmission. This lubricant does not need to be changed as often as the powertrain lubricant, and the general requirements for it are much lower.

When choosing a VAZ-2107 gear oil for the winter, you don't really need to take into account the nuances. In the transmission elements, oils with an SAE classification index of 75W-85, 80W-90, etc. are used. It is filled both in the gearbox and the gearbox.

Video - What kind of oil in a car to choose for the winter?

Before considering which oil is best to fill in the VAZ 2114 engine, you must first find out - and when should this be done? If you are guided by the existing technical regulations, then the replacement should be performed after every 10-15 thousand kilometers traveled.

True, many experts in this field propose to be guided by a different value - to change the oil at least every 8 thousand kilometers, or even more often. The point here is that the parameters indicated by the manufacturer (those same 15 thousand km) are taken from the calculation of ideal road conditions.

In general, it is worth noting the following factors that directly affect the rate of wear of engine oil (the more there are, the more often the oil needs to be changed):

  • frequent driving in urban environments, especially with a lot of traffic jams;
  • equipping a car with an additional trailer or transporting heavy loads in the trunk;
  • "Aggressive" driving style with frequent movement at high speed.

Also, besides all this, one should not forget that when the season changes (winter / summer and vice versa), the oil should be changed to a new one corresponding to this time of year.

What you need to know when choosing 2114 8 valve oil?

Asking the question - what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2114, you need to clearly understand that the right oil is the key to long and trouble-free operation of the engine, and saving on it can lead to disastrous consequences.

That is why we will consider the following important points that are worth remembering when choosing a new oil in a car shop:

  • you cannot save on the cost of oil, since the cost of engine repairs can be much higher;
  • in the conditions of the Russian climate and roads, replacement should be performed at least every 8 thousand kilometers (or better - a little earlier) or every six months;
  • you should not buy the same oil all the time, even if it seems very good - production technologies are constantly being improved and any new brand may turn out to be even better;
  • you should buy oils only in trusted stores - now there are a very large number of fakes on the market, sold under the labels of well-known brands (the quality of such oil usually leaves much to be desired);
  • you should not choose oils based on online reviews - there are many obviously advertising ones among them;
  • there is no need to ask the sellers what kind of lubricant to buy for your car - in most cases they will advise the one that is more expensive or the one that is "stale" in the store.

Thus, it is worth reiterating the importance of choosing the right oil and changing it on time. But what indicators to be guided by when choosing it - we will consider below.

When purchasing engine oil, you should pay attention not only to such a parameter as viscosity, but also to its origin - mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic. Despite all its advantages, mineral oil is highly discouraged for use in conditions with dramatically changing ambient temperatures.

Operating parameters of oils

Now let's talk about the oil parameters themselves - viscosity, temperature limits of its operation and others. The most important of them is its viscosity (in fact, all other indicators indirectly depend on it). Its degree classifies oils according to a special scale - SAE.

So, lubricants of the winter category - from SAE20W to SAE0W - retain excellent fluidity even in severe frosts (the latter of them works well even at -40 C). The second category is summer oils - from SAE30 to SAE50. Their operating range falls on temperatures from 0 C to +50 C (in the case of SAE50 oil).

In addition, there are so-called "all-season" fluids - their temperature limit is between -40 C and +40 C, and they are designated by indices from SAE5W-40 to SAE20W-50. It would seem, why not choose them and stop there?

But there is one important point - such fluids are designed to work exclusively in mild climates, and the indicated temperature limits can be only short-term. Therefore, motorists living in the middle, and even more so in the northern strip, should not purchase such all-season oils - it is better to purchase special winter oils.

Another important parameter of lubricating fluids is their minerality / synthetics. In total, three main categories can be distinguished: mineral (natural), synthetic and semi-synthetic oils.

Mineral oils are the most viscous and well-enveloping, so they constantly clean the engine (albeit not very quickly). But, they also have one significant drawback - they can work only in stable weather, it does not matter - warm or cold, therefore, in regions where frosts abruptly alternate with thaws and vice versa, such oils are not recommended to be used.

Synthetic fluids are oils obtained in the process of chemical synthesis. They are the most versatile and all-season. True, at the same time, they are also the most fluid, due to which even the smallest hole in the engine gasket can lead to its leakage.

Semi-synthetic - are a mixture of natural and synthetic oils in certain proportions. Due to this, they have the ability to clean the engine and can operate over a wide temperature range. Here it is also possible to note the fact that when asked what oil to pour into the VAZ 2114, many experts advise semi-synthetic samples. In addition, this oil is advised to be used for engines with a strong resource development.

It is best to buy oil, especially from well-known brands, in trusted places - in order to protect yourself from buying a fake.

  • Mobil;
  • Shell Hellix.

At the same time, do not forget about the advice given at the very beginning of this article - to purchase such oils only from trusted suppliers. After all, it is now very easy to buy a fake covered by a well-known brand, and the consequences of such a purchase can be very negative.

That is why, when purchasing branded oil, you should carefully inspect the canister with it - you need to check how clearly the label is printed (blurry pictures and letters can be a sign of counterfeit), check for serial numbers, date of manufacture and other important designations.

In addition, you should not purchase products at too low a price - such sales "from stock" can also lead to the purchase of a fake or just poor quality oil.
