The best summer crossover tires. Summer crossover tires: a comparison of manufacturers. The best tires in the middle price segment

home / Tuning

Let's be honest, most drivers rarely drive off the pavement. Much more often the car winds kilometers around the metropolis from home to work and back. This post will help you make the right choice of summer tires for a crossover.

The main qualities that summer tires for a crossover must meet are maximum traction, good grip provided by a powerful tread, comfort, and a long life cycle.

Rating of the best summer tires for crossovers 2016 - 2017

1st place: Continental ContiProContact SSR

The most suitable, against the background of all the criteria, is the model of summer tires for the Continental ContiProContact SSR crossover. The tires exhibit excellent grip and handling at high speeds, are very quiet and reliable. In addition, the model uses run-flat technology, which will allow you to keep the tires flat and drive them for a long distance. The only drawback is premium positioning, and, accordingly, the high price, which is justified by the quality of the product.

2nd place: Dunlop Grandtrek AT20

The Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 also meets the above set of qualities. At the same time, the tread design allows the wheels to be used almost all year round in any weather, with the exception of heavy snowfalls. The wheels will not suit those who drive 130 km / h and above, although in the city, at rush hour, and up to 30 km / h it is not always possible to accelerate. Great quality for your money.

3rd place: Goodyear Eagle LS

The Goodyear Eagle LS's signature feature is its impeccable grip, especially in harsh maneuvers. This function is very useful when driving in traffic jams and narrow streets, where you always need to be ready to go around a pedestrian or avoid a collision with a driver who is impudently climbing into a row. These wheels are quite quiet and durable. According to reviews, many owners were surprised that such reliable summer tires are available at a fairly affordable price.

4th place: Bridgestone TURANZA ER30

For those who love speed and value comfort, you should definitely purchase Bridgestone TURANZA ER30 wheels. Powerful central grooves provide a comfortable ride, keep the set course, and also do an excellent job of pushing water out without creating an aquaplaning effect. Side protectors allow for confident cornering.

5th place: Yokohama Geolandar A / T-S

But, if you are an avid summer resident, hunter and fisherman, then pay attention to the Yokohama Geolandar A / T-S model. The wheels are one of the best in the price-quality category, plus their projector has a rather aggressive design, and a wide range of sizes will find a pair for any wheels. Rubber behaves well on a dirt road, wet roads, slopes and all other conditions that have to be overcome in order to get to the cherished place where ideals bite.

Many car enthusiasts choose their tires based on test results from manufacturers or independent experts. We studied the test results of various brands of tires and made our own rating of summer tires for crossovers.

  1. Rolling resistance. The measurement of this parameter is carried out at the appropriate stand. The test tire is mounted on a test wheel that rolls on a running drum with downforce applied to the wheel. The rubber with the lowest rolling resistance provides the lowest fuel consumption and saves money.
  2. Aquaplaning. This parameter affects the car's handling on wet road surfaces. The moisture remaining in the tire grooves affects the stability of the vehicle. The measurements are carried out using special sensors that record the difference in the angular velocities of the vehicle wheels. Measurements are taken on dry and wet asphalt and the degree of slippage is calculated.
  3. Course stability. This indicator is very important for SUVs, the car should not lose control when entering turns, changing lanes from one lane to another, and so on.
  4. Noise level. When in contact with the road surface, tires make a certain noise, the lower it is, the more comfortable the driving process.
  5. Softness. Good tires for the summer cannot be too soft. The composition of the rubber compound from which they are made must ensure a smooth ride on uneven road surfaces.
  6. High temperature resistant. Summer tires should not melt and deform when in contact with a hot road surface.
  7. Braking distances. Comparison of rubber of different brands does not take place without taking into account this parameter, because ride safety depends on the size of the braking distance. The shorter the braking distance, the more reliable the tires are.

In the automotive market, the choice of tires is large, you can pick up expensive or budget options. Based on the tests carried out, we have selected several tire manufacturers and have compiled the top - the best.

Let's summarize

It is possible to choose good quality tires at a reasonable cost. To do this, you need to familiarize yourself with the reviews, ratings of summer tires for crossovers, choose the most suitable option for the operating conditions of the car. Consider: Tires that have taken the lead in most tests may be ideal for urban driving conditions, but very bad for off-road driving. For example, the tires that took the last place in our rating lost the fight for the championship, but they are great for off-road driving.

If you are reading this material, then most likely, select a set of summer tires for your crossover. Immediately, we note the fact that in comparison there are only road tires of the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) dimension, because the average modern crossover (often having a drive only to the front wheels) spends most of its life in the city and on asphalt roads, and "attesh" tires with a pronounced "evil" tread clearly lose to "civilian" rubber both in handling and in the comfort of movement on asphalt.

The review was attended by tires popular in the segment, which have been tested in different conditions by at least two editions. By the way, speaking of tests - the rating was based on the results of three tests.

The first one was organized by the German magazines Off Road and SUV Magazin. The tests were carried out in the winter at the Dunlop test site in Mireval in the south of France. Yes, summer tires were tested in winter, because in this area in the "cold" season the temperature is stable at around 20 degrees Celsius, which is quite consistent with our summer conditions. The Germans tested 6 types of tires with dimensions 215/65 R16.

The program included braking on wet surfaces from 80 km / h, braking on dry asphalt from 100 km / h, measuring the maximum safe speed when maneuvering, resistance to longitudinal and lateral aquaplaning, as well as noise and fuel efficiency.

Another German magazine Auto Bild Allrad tested 19-inch tires. In addition to standard tests on dry and wet asphalt, the wheels were tested for off-road grip. The results of these tests turned out to be predictably low, so they are not taken into account in the final ranking.

The third series of tests was carried out by the domestic magazine Autoreview. The tests took place in the USA at a special testing ground where different types of "parquet" wheels were examined. The program included tests similar to Auto Bild Allrad.

The list of summer tires included in the AutoDel selection.

Continental ContiCrossContact UHP - summer crossover tires, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

When talking about the Continental ContiCrossContact UHP, the manufacturer primarily claims a bionic tread pattern, also known as cat paw technology. Its essence lies in the asymmetric tread pattern with powerful side blocks and four or five drainage grooves, depending on the tread width, which guarantees the ContiCrossContact UHP tire excellent wet and dry handling, even at high speeds. In addition, the official description states that the tire exhibits excellent braking and handling characteristics.

The ContiCrossContact UHP is a dedicated tire for powerful 4x4s. Its characteristics - including short braking distances and increased cornering stability - are fully in line with the requirements of 4WD vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5. For wheels of a special size, there are tires in 23 and 24 inches, which is important for the tuning and high speed market. By the way, the tire is available in several speed indexes V, W, Y and Z (for speeds from 210 km / h to 300 km / h).

TEST RESULTS

German tires performed excellently when braking on wet asphalt, and generally earned high marks. A rather important factor is the predictability of Continental tires - the loss of grip when maneuvering on dry surfaces occurs a little earlier than in Pirelli, but it happens "smoother", which allows you to react in time to the situation. In addition, the low weight and rolling resistance of the ContiCrossContact have a positive effect on fuel consumption, which also contributed to the overall high score.

Of the minuses, it is worth noting the tendency to understeer on dry surfaces and the high price, otherwise these tires are great for everyday use in city and highway conditions.

Note that not identical models of the Continental brand participated in all tests. However, they are all focused on vehicles in the SUV segment. In addition, the results allowed us to combine them in one row. All tires performed equally confidently in all disciplines, demonstrating mainly excellent balance.

Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV - summer crossover tire test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV tire is designed for light SUVs, SUVs or SUVs. In other words, everything that fits the definition of the American abbreviation Sport Utility Vehicle.

The tire manufacturer claims the tire delivers superior fuel economy performance with the new Fuel Saving technology without sacrificing ride quality. In addition, the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV summer tire is environmentally friendly, according to the manufacturer. However, for the client, safety and balance of properties are much more important. This is also one of the strengths of the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV.

TEST RESULTS

The Goodyear tires performed consistently average in most tests, only slightly behind the Continental and Pirelli. At the same time, American tires showed high resistance to lateral aquaplaning, and also turned out to be the quietest. Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV is recommended for purchase with stable handling in all conditions.

The positive picture is overshadowed by unpredictability during emergency maneuvering and low fuel efficiency. For this reason, fans of aggressive driving are better off choosing tires with more "sporty" characteristics (see below).

Pirelli Scorpion Verde - summer crossover tires, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Especially for the Sport Utility Vehicle segment, Italian tire makers have packed all the technologies previously available only in tires designed for light sports cars into a Pirelli Scorpion Verde summer tire aimed at crossover applications.

First of all, tires are made of environmentally friendly materials and do not contain aromatic materials in the rubber compound, thereby reducing the harmful impact on the environment both during production and operation. The tread pattern largely repeats the pattern of the flagship model P-Zero Silver, however, due to its application in suspended loads, the Scorpion Verde also has its own technological features. In particular, four wide drainage channels, as well as a network of multidirectional channels, thanks to which water is quickly and efficiently removed from the contact patch. In addition, the optimized tread block arrangement allows extremely confident maneuvering on the road with low noise levels. In addition, the asymmetric tread pattern allows the tire to evenly distribute the pressure across the contact patch, due to which the contact patch area is always maximized. At the same time, despite the fact that the Pirelli Scorpion Verde is designed for crossovers and SUVs, its main element is the city and the highway.

TEST RESULTS

Italian tires proved to be very effective when braking on dry surfaces, and in general showed a rather "sporty" disposition. Pirelli allows for good "annealing" on the track, but the relatively poor performance in rain conditions does not allow these tires to be considered universal. The Pirelli Scorpion Verde can only be recommended for use in dry, hot summers.

The disadvantages of Pirelli include a noticeable tendency to oversteer and a high susceptibility to wear. And in terms of fuel consumption, the Scorpion Verde was the worst according to both Off Road / SUV Magazine and Auto Bild Allrad.

Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 4 562 - summer crossover tires test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

The high-performance summer tire Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 is designed for comfortable and powerful cars in the SUV segment, driving mainly on civil roads. When creating a tire, technologists paid special attention to three characteristics. As a result, it was possible to reduce noise levels by 4%, improve grip on wet surfaces by 8% and significantly reduce rolling resistance compared to a tire of the previous generation.

Enlarge image The tread of the Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 tire effectively removes water from the contact patch, reduces the risk of aquaplaning in the lateral direction, and improves grip on dry and wet roads. "Acoustic" lamellas - specially shaped slots - reduce the noise level. The increased rigidity of the center rib improves steering precision. The component stiffening rib, made up of individual blocks, reduces tire wear during cornering and at the same time improves handling. The wider treadmill and balanced carcass evenly distributes pressure across the contact patch and improves braking performance.

TEST RESULTS

In tests of "crossover" tires, the product of the Korean chemical industry has shown the most controversial results. On the one hand, the Hankook Dynapro was better than the Pirelli and Goodyear in braking on wet asphalt, while also delivering low noise levels.

However, these wheels have relatively poor aquaplaning resistance, long braking distances on dry surfaces, and low fuel efficiency due to their large mass. Thus, Hankook Dynapro exhibits both positive and negative properties in both dry and rainy weather.

It's worth noting that in absolute terms, the Hankook are not that bad. In braking on a dry surface from 100 km / h, the result of Korean tires was 37.9 meters, against 35.1 meters for Pirelli (2.8 meters difference), and 36.4 for Goodyear (1.5 meters difference). In terms of the combination of qualities, Hankook Dynapro HP2 is suitable, for example, for residents of rainy regions who rarely go out of town.

Michelin Latitude Sport 3 - summer crossover tire test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

For the summer season 2014, Michelin is introducing a new road tire with a sporty character for a wide range of off-road vehicles - the MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3. This is the third generation of Michelin's Latitude high-performance crossover road tires.

Even before the start of sales, the Michelin novelty had already been recognized by many leading automakers and received homologation for the original equipment of such advanced off-road vehicles as Porsche Macan, BMW X5, Volvo XC90. This recognition was made possible by improving several of the most important characteristics for consumers at once: reducing the braking distance on wet surfaces by 2.7 meters compared to the previous generation MICHELIN Latitude Sport, but also significantly improving the tire's mileage, durability and handling.

TEST RESULTS

The tires of the French manufacturer were somewhat "illegal" in our review, as they were tested only by Auto Bild Allrad magazine. However, it is impossible to completely ignore the once leading supplier of Formula 1 rubber.

In tests by a German magazine, the Michelin was rated slightly better than the Pirelli Scorpion Verde. This is justified by the very high stability of longitudinal and lateral aquaplaning, quiet tires and low rolling resistance, which affects comfort and fuel economy. However, the high price and poor maneuverability on both dry and wet surfaces resulted in a final low position in the rankings. On the positive side of the Latitude Sport 3, there is an unexpectedly high level of off-road traction.

Nokian Line (zLine) SUV - out of rating - summer crossover tires, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Nokian zLine is another innovative development from an elite Finnish manufacturer that has many outstanding characteristics. These tires will be the perfect match for most powerful sports cars and will allow you to fully unleash the potential of the vehicle without compromising your own safety. Like a real ninja, they will give their owner loyalty, accuracy of all commands and complete silence. Most notably, the tires perform equally well on dry and wet surfaces, at any speed. Extreme loads, difficult weather conditions or poor-quality surface will not become an obstacle for this fast warrior of the roads!

Everything about the Nokian z-Line is about speed and safety. Thus, the “smart” silica UHP was applied. As a result of special cleaning, it generates extremely little heat, which guarantees the owner the durability of the tires and the maximum long-term preservation of all original properties, and if you add to this the reinforced structure of these tires, then, rest assured, they will serve you for more than one year. In addition, the mixture readily adapts to temperature changes, keeping the tread in good working order, even when the asphalt is on fire. The same property helps the tire to fully maintain all its characteristics on a wet road.

The basis of the high performance "zLine" is a modernized asymmetric tread. The outer and inner shoulder areas are equipped with powerful wide blocks, emphasizes the specialist of the Avitech company. At the same time, the outer shoulder is separated from the central part by a longitudinal rib, which limits the mobility of the blocks in contact with the track, which increases the stability of the car on bends. The ribs, located near the inner shoulder area, thanks to deep transverse grooves, ensure a stable position of the car on the road and guarantee precise control. The same grooves are responsible for the removal of moisture entering the wide circumferential grooves that separate the central ribs. Additional protection against aquaplaning is provided by the descending lateral grooves of the outer shoulder ribs.

The comfort is also worth mentioning. Nokian zLine tires are virtually silent thanks to the semi-circular grooves on the lateral groove walls. Reminiscent of the imprint of a golf ball, they effectively combat both external and internal noise.

TEST RESULTS

Nokian Line SUVs in the Off Road / SUV Magazine tests were able to demonstrate the best handling characteristics on dry asphalt, while on wet surfaces Finnish tires were second only to Continental. In Auto Bild Allrad's tests, the 19-inch zLine SUV performed similarly - high predictability and neutral behavior in all conditions, should have brought Nokian first place in the overall standings of "parquet" tires, if not for one "but".

At the very end of winter, a scandal erupted over the "tire fraud" of the Finnish manufacturer. It turned out that for 10 years the company had been sending specially prepared "rubber" to the organizers of the tests, the properties of which were often very different from those of serial tires. For this reason, it was decided to disqualify both Nokian models and invalidate the results.

Let's sum up

Despite the fact that crossovers currently account for a large share of the new car market both in Russia and in Europe, there are still not very many tires specially ground for them. On the one hand, this narrows the spectrum when choosing "rubber", on the other hand, the specifics of large-size tires do not allow openly cheap manufacturers to enter this rapidly developing market. As a result, the difference in properties of crossover tires from different manufacturers is not very large. So, for example, when braking on wet asphalt, the difference in the results of the wheels tested in Mireval did not exceed 60 cm (from 25.9 meters for Continental to 26.5 for Goodyear). Thus, in terms of safety, all the presented models proved to be positive, and it is worth choosing, focusing on the budget and your own driving style. By and large, any of the tested tires can be safely used on your "iron horse". One has only to take into account the features of each specific tire in order to choose the most effective option for specific conditions.

The number of crossovers and SUVs on the roads of Russia continues to grow. This category of vehicles requires a special type of tire, which manufacturers usually label with a combination of three SUV letters. However, it is not worth focusing only on the marking, since not every rubber has the necessary set of technical characteristics. And they must take into account factors such as the vehicle's high center of gravity and off-road driving. After familiarizing yourself with the recommendations of our experts, it will become easier to make the choice of summer tires for a crossover.

  1. Price... The Russian market offers a wide range of summer tires for off-road vehicles. There are some very good models among them, but their price is too high for the average car enthusiast. Therefore, you should start from your budget, especially since in our rating there are worthy representatives of tires, both in the premium segment and in the economy class.
  2. Dimension... Although the models presented in the review are widely represented in the retail network, motorists in the reviews complain about the lack of the required standard size. The most popular are the following sizes: 215/65 R16, 235/65 R17, 225/55 R18. Motorists whose crossovers ride on such tires are given the richest choice.
  3. Stability. One of the main differences between a crossover and a conventional station wagon is its high ground clearance. Because of this, the center of gravity is shifted upward, and the machine loses stability when performing sharp maneuvers. Therefore, you should choose tires taking into account their stability when passing high-speed corners or lane changes.
  4. Road grip. The weight of off-road vehicles is greater than that of most passenger cars. Consequently, when accelerating or braking, an improved grip of the rubber with the road surface is required. This is achieved in different ways, most often manufacturers make the rubber softer.
  5. Strength. Most crossover owners bought a car for driving on bad roads. Therefore, tires must be very durable to withstand bumps, potholes, curbs, rocks, etc. Pay special attention to the sidewalls, as they are most likely to cause hernias and cuts.
  6. Passability. In order for the crossover to confidently overcome dirt, sand, as well as unexpectedly appeared snowdrifts, a mushy mass must be removed from the tread in a timely manner. For frequent off-road driving, preference should be given to tires with a directional tread pattern.
  7. All-seasonality. Not all motorists operate crossovers in the winter. Therefore, for one-off trips, it makes no sense to buy another set of tires. Therefore, summer tires must have all-season performance. This rubber is characterized by its softness, which remains stable even at low temperatures.
  8. Wear resistance. When buying summer tires, you should consider your riding style. With frequent acceleration and deceleration, it is better to give preference to wear-resistant models, even if they are inferior to competitors in other aspects. Otherwise, the service life will be limited to several years.

We've hand-picked the 10 best summer crossover tires. All of them are sold in the Russian trade network. When allocating seats, the opinion of the expert community and the reviews of domestic motorists were taken into account.
