The need to replace the fuel consumption

The initial data should be fuel consumption per 100 km of movement according to passport data and actual. For example, according to the passport, the consumption is 9 liters per 100 km, and the actual consumption is 11 liters. According to the passport, the oil change should be carried out after 15,000 km of the car's movement.

2 Oil change on a car, step by step instructions

For the VAZ model range with gasoline eight or sixteen-valve engines with a volume of 1.5 or 1.6 liters (type 2111.21114.21124, etc.), with which most popular models are equipped, the recommended amount of oil is 3.5 liters. But given the residue that is inside the engine after draining and installing a new oil filter, you first need to pour 300-400 grams into the filter, and after a while 3 full liters into the engine itself. Further, the level is corrected by means of a dipstick so that it is between Min and Max. Directly during replacement, a slight increase in volume is allowed (by 100-150 g of grease) so that the level is slightly closer to the maximum.

Oil change for different types of engine is carried out according to the same algorithm:

  1. drive the car onto an inspection pit, lift or overpass;
  2. turn off the engine, allow the oil to drain into the crankcase and cool;
  3. prepare a suitable container for draining (at least 5 liters in volume);
  4. open the hood and remove the cover from the filler neck on the engine;
  5. unscrew the drain plug of the pallet on the bottom;
  6. allow the liquid to drain to the maximum volume (wait 15-20 minutes).
  7. install a new filter (pour a little oil into it, 200-300 g);
  8. screw on the drain plug and fill in the recommended volume (in our case, 3 liters).

After 2-3 minutes, check the level of the filled oil on the dipstick, top up if necessary to the appropriate mark. Then start the engine and let it run for 10-15 minutes on new oil. Stop the engine and measure the oil level again, if everything is normal, the process is complete. In case of deviation in any direction, drain or add liquid until the recommended mark on the dipstick is reached.

3 Insufficient lubrication in the engine - possible consequences

Any modern motor operates under strong mechanical stress at high temperatures. The working process proceeds under the influence of high friction and heating, therefore, to lubricate the contacting parts, create protective surfaces and partially cool the process, it is necessary to fill the engine with engine oil, which is sprayed over the parts under very high pressure.

An insufficient amount of lubricant leads to an increase in "dry" areas of friction, therefore, the heating of individual parts and elements of the system increases, the level of wear of the main mechanisms is several times exceeded, which subsequently leads to seizure or failure of the motor.

4 Increased level - acceptable but undesirable

Important! Measure the thickness of the oil layer on a cold or slightly cooled engine. Oil Level Too High: Good or Bad?

Let's talk about a situation when the liquid level on the dipstick is above the “max” mark. And the reason for this may be the deliberate overflow of fuels and lubricants, the inattention of the motorist, insufficient warming up of the car before changing the oil, etc. But first things first.

Many drivers believe that the more oil in a car's engine, the more power it produces. This opinion is wrong. If there is too much lubricant, the engine will simply "choke". By the way, deliberate oil overflow also takes place in situations where the structure has leaks and the driver is simply trying to immediately compensate for future losses.

Failure to comply with the required amount of oil may be caused by inattention or ignorance of the principle of its filling. Even after the last drop (as it seems to you) flows out of the crankcase, 200-300 ml of oil protection will remain in it (it can be completely removed only when the engine is disassembled). Therefore, it is not recommended to fill the engine with fuels and lubricants (knowing in theory how much oil is needed for a given brand), focusing only on the canister marks.

An insufficiently warmed-up engine can play a cruel joke on you and “not give” you all the liquid when it is drained. The operating temperature inside the unit improves the circulation of the mixture and makes it easier to change it.

Motor oil

A dipstick or excessive fuel consumption can be used to diagnose overflow. The latter reason may be caused by the fact that too thick layer of the working film will resist the moving parts of the engine. Difficulty cranking the crankshaft will cause a decrease in torque and, as a result, a drop in vehicle power. To achieve quick acceleration, the driver will press harder on the gas pedal, but he will not achieve anything but increased fuel consumption.

Among the consequences of liquid overflow, I would like to dwell on the most frequent ones. These include:

  • difficult starting of the motor. As mentioned above, due to the large amount of lubricant, the engine will "choke".
  • malfunction of hydrocompressors.
  • an increase in pressure inside the motor system.
  • excessive load on the oil pump, which is dangerous due to its rapid wear.
  • the appearance of heavy deposits and soot in the working area and further contamination of the oil.
  • an increase in the concentration of harmful impurities in exhaust gases.
  • flooding of spark plugs.

How to reduce the amount of oil in the engine?

Liquid level reduction can be achieved in the following ways:

  1. We drain the fuels and lubricants through the drain plug. It is important to be careful here. Severe burns can occur if it is removed from a hot engine. This method requires special care also because you can miss the moment and drain much more of the required volume. The procedure is performed on a pit or overpass.
  2. We “suck out” the oil through the dipstick hole. This is done using self-contained pumping equipment designed for “express replacement”, or using a syringe and a long rubber tube.
  3. We turn to the service center for help. Experts know how much oil to fill in the engine, so they will set the optimum level for your car.

How much oil do you need to fill in the motor?

There is no definite answer to this question. The fact is that, due to design differences, all cars need a different amount of lubricant. Yes, in the owner's manual, manufacturers indicate how much oil should be poured into the engine. But this information is relevant only for the very first filling, which is carried out after the car leaves the assembly line.

Motor oil

During engine operation, most of the oil is distributed on the surfaces of the parts, therefore, even after a complete drain, an unchanged part of the fluid remains in the system. You can remove it only if you risk taking the motor apart. It is not possible to do this with every oil change. And reasonable.

So what to do, how to determine how much oil to put in the engine? When filling in a new fuel and lubricant, you need to rely not on the canister marks and the manufacturer's parameters, but on the readings of the oil dipstick. Also, you cannot be guided "by eye", even if you "remember perfectly how much oil your engine needs". Failure to meet the required fluid volume can further cause a serious engine problem.

Unfortunately, the dipstick cannot tell you how much fluid needs to be purchased from the store to perform one service. He only in fact informs you about sufficient or insufficient quantity.

The oil level required for efficient operation of the engine system is always located between the divisions of the maximum and minimum of the oil dipstick. It is this position that is guaranteed to increase the engine resource, protect parts from rapid wear, and give the car optimal fuel consumption. If you notice that the amount of lubricant is constantly decreasing and the regularity of topping up is out of range, then it's time to start checking the condition of the car.

You should also avoid exceeding the “max” mark. You don't want to be without wheels, do you? Thus, the “golden mean” rule should be followed in terms of the volume of oil fluid.
