Roskachestvo, on behalf of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the State Commission for Combating Illegal Trafficking of Industrial Products, carried out a quality control of 16-inch aluminum wheels. The study included copies of 23 of the most common brands, under which brands are produced non-original wheels produced in Russia, China, Italy, Germany, Taiwan.

STANDARD OF THE RUSSIAN QUALITY SYSTEM

The standard of the Russian quality system for aluminum alloy wheels establishes an increase in the requirements for the physical properties of the metal from which the wheels are made: yield strength, elongation and Brinell hardness. These tests are needed to predict how much the alloys of which the rims are made are prone to deformation during operation. In addition, corrosion resistance was evaluated.

How security was tested

The main tests of car rims concerned their safety. They simulated the day-to-day use of a car - impact test, rolling test and torsional bending test. Wheels that fail at least one of these tests can pose a real threat on the road, as wheel failure is a negative result.

Impact test

Impact testing examines the toughness of a material and how these properties of the alloy are applied to the design of the disc. In this case, the impact of a wheel on an obstacle, curb or hole on the road surface is simulated.

A wheel fails the test if one of the following conditions is found:

• visible rudimentary crack in the area of ​​the wheel disc assembly;
• the center piece separates from the rim;
• total loss of internal pressure within one minute.

The test result is considered satisfactory if there are no visible cracks on the surface of the rim and if no decrease in tire pressure is observed within one minute after completion of the test. Cracks and dents caused by direct contact with a dropped load are acceptable. In the case of rims with removable rims or other elements that can be removed, if the threaded connections next to the spoke or ventilation holes fail the test, the wheel is considered to have failed the test.

Rolling test

The rolling test simulates the load on a vehicle while traveling a certain distance (about 1800 kilometers) at a speed of up to 80 km / h. In this test, a wheel with a tire mounted on it is pressed against a rotating drum with a clearly calculated load, thereby simulating rolling on the road surface. This experience shows how the wheel behaves under normal and critical conditions. The test result can be called positive if the rolling did not lead to a fracture or the slightest cracks in the disc.

Torsion bend

The torsional bending test simulates the maximum load in a corner of the vehicle and must withstand a specified number of cycles (1,800,000).

The calculation of the maximum load takes into account the maximum foreseeable loads under the worst operating conditions and the most important technical factors such as vehicle weight at maximum load, tire type and size, ET and PCD wheels.

The test result can be called positive if the full rotation cycle did not lead to a fracture or the slightest cracks in the rim material.

Who did not stand the test

Six brands of aluminum wheels fail the impact test. This suggests that when hitting an obstacle, cars on these disks can cause an accident. These discs have been found to be unsafe.

• X-Race brand wheel, produced in China and imported into Russia by the Yarshintorg company did not withstand the blow to the valve; the central part has separated from the wheel rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
• Wheel of the PROMA trademark, produced in Russia at Fest LLC, could not withstand a blow to the spoke. After testing, cracks were found in the connection of the spoke to the rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
• 4GO brand wheel, produced in China and imported into Russia by the Russian Aluminum Discs company did not withstand the blow to the valve. It had cracks in the connection of the spokes with the rim and the tightness was broken - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
• Replay brand wheel, made in China failed both impact tests. The impact on the valve cracked the spokes in the connection with the center part. And a blow to the spoke (on another sample) tore off the central part of the wheel from the rim, which led to an instant loss of pressure in the tire - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
• Wheel of the MEGALUM trademark, produced in Russia by the company of the same name, failed both impact tests. A blow to the valve tore the spokes from the central element, and a blow to the spoke (on a new sample) separated the central element from the rim - this is a serious violation, the product is unsafe.
  Also, the wheel of the MEGALUM trademark has not passed a single test of the physical properties of the metal from which it is made. The tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the wheel do not meet the leading Roskachestvo standards.
• Alcasta brand wheel, made in China did not pass the impact test. The impact to the spoke caused the center piece to separate from the rim - a serious violation, the product is unsafe.

An important point:

Not a single brand of aluminum wheels that did not pass safety tests met the leading Roskachestvo standard for elongation during the study. This suggests that the wheels may deform during operation, which is another confirmation of the poor quality of this product.

Who violated, but not seriously

Alcasta aluminum wheels have violations in terms of marking - this is one of the most common violations among all categories of goods that Roskachestvo investigated. In particular, the year of manufacture of the wheel was not indicated on the rims.

It is also worth noting that when purchasing aluminum wheels through the store / manufacturer's website or when communicating with managers, as well as when directly receiving a wheel, not all brands accompanied their products with complete information. According to the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union, wheels must be marked with data on the name or trademark, designation of the configuration, designation of the rim size, wheel departure, date of manufacture. However, when buying some wheels, it was impossible to find out their weight, country of origin, some did not have a barcode. This is not a violation, but it makes it difficult to identify products if there is a clear preference for the buyer.

Who passed all the tests

According to the results of the study of aluminum disks, six brands were recognized as goods of improved quality - two Russian-made and four Chinese. Their products passed all safety tests, confirmed the high-quality physical properties prescribed in the leading Roskachestvo standard, they had everything in order with the labeling.

None of my personal cars have ever had alloy wheels. Forged wheels usually have only two drawbacks: they are very expensive and much less design variety than cast ones. And they often forget about the third: the disc is too durable. There is some risk that, with a strong impact, it will not absorb some of the energy, as a stamped (bent) or cast (cracked) will do, but will lovingly transfer all of it to the suspension, steering gear and drive shafts. At least in theory this is the case.

The main disadvantage of alloy wheels is widely known and understood: low maintainability. In an unfortunate combination of circumstances, a cast wheel can collapse to death. In those cases when repair is possible, its cost may not be far from the cost of a new disc. It will not always come out to find another exactly the same new disc in the store to replace the killed one (the assortment is very quickly updated), and many generally sell alloy wheels not individually, but only in sets.
