I think the designers were aimed at even further from the image of a tank, with which many are associated X5 first generation. It seemed to me that F15 is somewhat lower than E53, and more like a crossover than an SUV. Perhaps precisely because of unusual proportions, I accepted the R18 discs installed on the test instance for R20. At the same time, passing in the car both on the place of the rear passenger and at the driver's seat, I appreciated the salon as higher than in E53. Probably this effect is achieved due to the lower arrangement of the seats in the cabin. Forced to admit that the design F15 seemed too "irrelevant": it is only the expected Evolution of the E70 body, which at one time seemed to me simply "jump in the future" compared to E53. In the F15 stream, it is not so recognizable and effectable as once e70.

The machine has less massive outer door handles, which are opened by the predictable movement "on themselves", unlike the E53, where every new passenger strives pull to himself what, according to the designer idea, should rise up. I think the owner of the F15 does not have to run around the car in search of non-freeze handles (E53-X drivers will understand). It was surprised that, unlike E53, the upper part of the trunk has an electric drive, a smoothly closing lid. In this case, the lower part opens and locks it mechanically - with a special handle, and not an electric lock with a push-button drive, as in my car.

Mixed feelings caused the presence in the front wings of the cross-cutting slots over the wheeled arches. Surely they have some kind of aerodynamic or other well-thought-out designers appointments, but I, as a simple driver, such a solution seems controversial at least from aesthetic point of view: Mud flying from the front wheel settles on the outer surface of the front wing. As a result, the front wings beyond the wheel arches will almost always be dirty.

Behind the wheel of the car, I felt like a driver from the last century. When I first sat down in the E53 after the 10 years left for the E30, the impression was much more modest than when I get acquainted with F15 after E53. From the well-known, I remained except for the instrument panel, the steering wheel and the armrest with the built-in separation for any little things. Everything else is like tank T-90 for the driver of the Austin-Putilovets armor. Another era: a great screen in the center, the lever-lever buttons some ... reassured one thing - to master this everything will be much easier than to pass the driving exam in the traffic police.

I liked the steering wheel: the optimal thickness plus the presence of thickens in the upper third - in the hands sits perfectly. The "petals" of shifting gear under the wheel is absolutely not interfered with driving in automatic mode, while very convenient if you wish to portray the "Racer". I liked the color electronic indication under the tachometer. A separate problem caused a non-fixed lever of inclusion of rotation indicators. During the time of staying driving, I never learned to use it and half of the turns performed with the turned off "turn signals", at least I was sure that they were included.

As for the driving qualities of the F15, here everything turned out to be predictable: excellent handling, rapid acceleration, excellent braking. Slightly tougher suspension than in my E53 "on the springs". Sorry, not enough time to evaluate off-road qualities F15. I heard a lot about the XDRIVE system, so I really wanted to try it out. Next time then.

It so happened that from the parking lot on which this test drive began, I left the last. After observing the F15 removing on the snow-covered gravity, I approached my E53. I remembered the phrase of Adam Kazimirovich Kozlevich: "... my" Lauren-Dietrich "is a good car." Moving on the still fresh tracks F15, I thought that my "Lauren Dietrich" really goes almost as cheerfully as his young successor. Maybe in the cabin a little more noisy, and we do not see such accelerations, and besides, F15 compared to us, like that of the "title" from the "meeting place", the motor is tripled. BMW designers closely approached the perfection that the steps in its direction are becoming less and less. But, nevertheless, the progress of developers is obvious. And I, as a solid adherent of the brand, I wish them further success and revolutionary ideas.

Compared to the previous generation, the new X5 began to look more aggressively and visually became more streamlined. The slots in the front wings added sportiness, but in fact, from these structural holes, all dirt from under the wheels falls on the body. Lighting F15 is probably the only external element that allows you to distinguish F15 from the previous E70. Rear lights at a distance resemble x1 or x3.

The visual space in the cabin has increased in many respects thanks to the new front panel. The new BMW NBT multimedia system surprises primarily the speed of work. Functionality has passed mainly from the previous generation of BMW CIC. The new screen with even greater resolution makes it clear that you are in the truly new generation of the car. The possibility of installing applications, and has become a deeper integration with modern smartphones. Since I already had several BMW cars of different episodes, which were collected in Germany, the feeling that the American assembly differs from the German as fitting parts and the performance of body elements. But this is my subjective opinion, maybe I am mistaken. Many claim, they say, "this is not an SUV," but it seems to me, he does not pretend to this. On this machine, it is comfortable and dynamically moved both in the city and on the light off-road. Probably this is its purpose.

I, as the owner of the current generation Mercedes ML, was very interesting to look at the nearest competitor in the face of the BMW X5. The previous generation X5 (E70) frankly did not reach the level of ML in the 166th body on the quality of the interior decoration, noise insulation, off-road properties and many other details. ML or X5? It is impossible to answer this question uniquely. Now the choice is more difficult than ever, both cars are very good. X5 definitely wins in terms of electronics and seats, and also has a projector on glass and LED headlights. ML, in turn, offers a full-fledged air suspension with the ability to change the road lumen and an off-road package, which allows to significantly expand off-road qualities, while maintaining the corporate comfort of the daily ride. It is also important to remember that the price "from" as in the case of ML and in the case of X5 has a weak relation to reality. Both cars in the basic configuration will be, to put it mildly, not the best choice, and the prices for well-equipped specimens fly to heaven.
