The oil has the following functions:

  • protects parts and components of the system from corrosion;
  • removes heat generated during movement and friction of parts with each other, preventing overheating.

How many functions PSF will perform, including how strongly it foams, depends on the additives that are added to it.

Types of liquids

Drivers often judge the quality of PSF power steering fluid by its color. Although color is an indicator, it does not determine its properties.

The main characteristics of the liquid:

  • viscosity;
  • how much it foams;
  • hydraulic properties;
  • mechanical qualities;
  • Chemical properties.

It is by these characteristics that the quality of the oil can be determined.

There are two types of PSF fluids: mineral and synthetic. For the power steering, mineral oil is more often used, due to the fact that there are rubber parts in its design. Over time, these parts dry out under intense stress on the steering system. Mineral based PSF extends the life of rubber parts.

Synthetic PSF is rarely filled for power steering. It can only be used for the vehicle control system if approved by the manufacturer. Synthetics are often used on technical machines that have permission to use them in their passport.

Each PSF fluid for power steering has a specific color. It can be red, yellow and green. It is allowed to mix red and yellow liquids. If green oil is poured into the system, then a solution of a different color cannot be poured. It is not recommended to mix mineral water and synthetics.

Substances of red color can have both mineral and synthetic base. They are mainly used in automatic transmissions. They are very rarely poured into the hydraulic booster. A red solution can be mixed with a yellow one, but only if they match in characteristics.

The main advantage of the yellow liquid is that it is versatile. It can be operated both in a car with a manual or an automatic gearbox.

A green liquid, like red, can be synthetic or mineral. But the difference is that it can only be poured into a car with a manual transmission.

What is better to pour?

Many drivers are thinking about what kind of fluid to pour into the control system, because of the variety not only of oils, but also of the large number of manufacturers.

PSF for power steering must meet the following requirements:

  1. Safety for the driver and passengers. Why is safety important? During operation, the liquid heats up, the vapors must be harmless to people.
  2. Resistant to high temperatures. Quality oil must withstand temperatures over 100 degrees. Over time, PSF can change color, becoming darker.

  • the solution turned dark;
  • there was a burning smell;
  • the steering wheel behaves differently when cornering to the right and left;
  • the appearance of oil stains under the car;
  • there is a slight uncontrollability of the steering wheel at idle;
  • the appearance of extraneous noise in the steering mechanism.

Therefore, after several years of operation, it will be necessary to either top up the oil to the desired level, or completely change it with your own hands.

Replacement instructions

It is easy to change the solution for power steering with your own hands, even a novice car enthusiast can handle this procedure.

Tools and materials

To change PSF oil, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • keys set;
  • new power steering oil;
  • liquid for flushing the tank;
  • drain hose;
  • funnel;
  • syringe;
  • rags;
  • a container for draining old oil, a one and a half liter plastic bottle is suitable.

How much oil to fill depends on the car model, approximately 1.2-1.4 liters. With a little experience in repair work, and having prepared the necessary tools, you can begin to replace it yourself.

The main functions and characteristics of oils for power steering

Lubricating fluid in power steering performs a number of important functions:

  • transferring thermal energy to cool the device;
  • corrosion protection;
  • lubrication of internal components and mechanisms;
  • distribution of pressure and amplification between the working elements of the system.

Power steering hydraulic fluid classification

The oil used in the power steering is its working fluid. This fluid falls into two broad categories:

  1. The mineral-based product does not attack the rubber rings, which have a sealing function. This lubrication provides additional protection for the material, due to which it does not crack when exposed to low temperatures. too viscous, especially in winter, has a small resource and foams.
  2. Synthetic lubricants will only adversely affect the condition of rubber parts if they are not made of a special material. Such oil is more expensive, but it can also last longer. Its viscosity is uniform and this indicator does not change with the ambient temperature.

Liquid composition

We figured out the base that is used to create a lubricating fluid for power steering. But oils have a complex, multicomponent composition, in which each component plays a role. In addition to the base base, the lubricant contains additives that also determine some of the properties of the material. And it doesn't matter what kind of lubricant is chosen: synthetics, semi-synthetics or mineral water. In any case, additives will be present in the lubricant, due to which the product may have the following characteristics:

  • and foam formation;
  • inhibitors of corrosive and oxidative processes;
  • increased antifriction and anti-seize characteristics;
  • providing color;
  • protection for rubber parts.

The hydraulic properties of the lubricant are reduced to resistance to foaming processes and the setting of the maximum operating temperature. The essence of the mechanical characteristics is reduced to the compressibility index. Low pressure remains in the system, therefore this indicator does not play a key role.

Viscosity is an important indicator for the oil that is poured into the power steering. At low temperatures, the grease becomes thick and its properties are reduced, therefore the parts work "dry". The grease dilutes as the operating temperature rises.

Power steering oil color

The color grading of the lubricant is very popular, which is used by many manufacturers. The first lubricants were produced only in red, the designation PSF was used. There are now several color options that are used to represent different types of lubricants:


Among automakers there are many who use the same oil for the automatic gearbox and power steering. This includes Japanese companies. Among European manufacturers, another trend is noted - they require the use of special lubricants in power steering.

In some cases, it becomes necessary to mix different liquids, for example, when you need to add lubricant, and not completely change it. This option is possible, but with some amendments. It is strictly forbidden to mix oils with different bases. For example, synthetics and mineral water cannot mix.

Yellow liquids and red liquids are considered compatible because their compositions are similar and this combination will not harm the mechanism. True, you cannot drive on such oil for a long time. This decision is only temporary. Green grease cannot be added to red and yellow liquids, because they have completely different bases.

How many liters will be required

The hydraulic booster of the steering mechanism holds about a liter of lubricant when it comes to passenger cars. For cargo vehicles, you will need up to 5 liters. When choosing and buying oil, this feature must be taken into account. A small amount of lubricant must be added to the required amount. It may come in handy for the next refill. How to change the oil in the power steering

There are two methods for performing this repair. One of them assumes complete, the essence of the second is the partial addition of oil to the existing one. Changing the power steering oil will require the use of a number of tools and materials. It is recommended to prepare all this in advance, so that when performing work, nothing distracts you from the main process. We have collected everything that needs to be prepared in a list:

  • new grease, the type of which corresponds to the car manual;
  • a 50 ml syringe, with which it will be convenient to remove the old liquid from the mechanism;
  • a tube that will slide over the lengthening syringe;
  • container for collecting used grease;
  • rags;
  • fluid for washing parts (gasoline, carburetor cleaner);
  • funnel;
  • to dismantle the clamps, it is convenient to use a screwdriver or pliers, which are specially designed for this work;
  • heads in a set.

Power steering oil must be disposed of. It must not be drained down the drain and poured onto the ground. If everything you need is prepared, then you can get to work. It will consist of the following steps:

How does power steering oil work?

The first owner of the power steering in the USSR in 1950 was the domestic truck MAZ-525 - the steering wheel of a multi-ton car was equipped with this mechanism to facilitate the driver's work. And among Soviet passenger cars, power steering was first used in 1959 on a ZIL-111 limousine. The mass equipping of passenger models of the domestic auto industry with a power steering began relatively recently, in the late 1990s - early 2000s. Whereas on foreign-made passenger cars, power steering began to be massively installed already in the 1970s.

The power steering consists of several units and mechanisms: a hydraulic power cylinder, a control spool, a pressure regulator, a pump and an expansion tank.

The "blood" of this mechanism is a special hydraulic fluid (Power Steering Fluid - PSF), which circulates in a closed system. It performs several important functions:

  • Power transfer from pump to steering pistons
  • Cooling of units and assemblies of the power steering
  • Lubrication of units and assemblies of the power steering
  • Protection of components and assemblies of power steering from corrosion

The main function of hydraulic fluid for power steering is to transfer the working pressure from the pump, which is driven by a motor or an autonomous electric motor, to the driving parts of the power steering. When the pressure in the pump increases, the fluid circulates in a closed system to a place with low pressure - to the pistons of the hydraulic power cylinder, which is closely connected to the steering rack, through a control valve. Moving horizontally, the spool directs the fluid flow depending on which direction the driver turns the steering wheel, and relieves the effort on the steering wheel.

Another important role of oil in power steering is the removal of excess heat from units and parts of the power steering. Possessing good lubricating properties, the liquid prevents the occurrence of a large frictional force between the nodes of the power steering mechanism. The corrosive inhibitors included in this oil suppress or slow down the process of rust formation on the inner surfaces of the power steering parts.

Composition of oils for power steering

Operating fluids for various car systems (and so on) are divided into three types according to the chemical composition of the base: mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. In the case of oils for power steering, everything is the same.

Mineral-based hydraulic fluids contain refined petroleum fractions (paraffins and naphthenes). The mineral base of such oils is up to 97%, the rest is additives that improve the performance of power steering fluids.

Semi-synthetic hydraulic fluids in a chemical composition contain a mixture of mineral and synthetic (polyglycolic) substances. Compared to mineral oils, semi-synthetic hydraulic fluids have a longer service life and improved performance (lower kinematic viscosity, resistance to foaming, oxidation, etc.).
Synthetic-based hydraulic fluids contain polyhydric alcohols (ethylene glycol or propylene glycol); hydrocracked petroleum fractions; polyesters and various additives that improve the already outstanding performance characteristics when compared to mineral and semi-synthetic and oils.
In addition to base oils, hydraulic fluids contain additives of various types and purposes. Let's list the main ones:

  • Reducing the viscosity of the fluid

Classification of hydraulic fluids for power steering

To make it easier to understand what kind of hydraulic fluid is needed for a particular car (not all motorists are chemists and remember what kind of oil is suitable for the power steering of their cars), manufacturers have introduced a simple PSF classification - according to the color of the pigment that is added to its composition. There are three main colors of these liquids: red, yellow and green.

Red oils for power steering include fluids developed according to the standards of the General Motors concern. They are called Dexron (), according to their composition, they are divided into mineral and synthetic. Currently, Dextron III and Dextron VI oils are used as operating fluid for power steering.

The first is produced by various companies producing hydraulic fluids under license from General Motors (the concern itself has not been producing it for a long time), and the second is produced both by the concern itself under the name Dexron Power Steering Fuel, and by third-party manufacturers under license.

These oils are also used as a fluid for automatic transmissions - some, mainly Japanese and Korean automakers fill the gearbox and power steering of their models with the same fluid. Dextrons are widely used in cars of General Motors, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda and others.

Yellow hydraulic fluids include mineral and synthetic working substances, which are mainly used by Daimler. These PSFs are poured into the power steering of Mercedes-Benz cars. However, other manufacturers of technical oils also produce "yellow" hydraulic fluid under the Daimler license.

Green hydraulic fluids are a proprietary development of the German concern Pentosin. They are widely used by Volkswagen, Chrysler, Ford, BMW, Bentley, Volvo and transmission manufacturers such as ZF.

Attention: It is strictly forbidden to mix together hydraulic fluids that differ in chemical composition (mineral with synthetic and semi-synthetic and vice versa). As for the color, red power steering fluids can be mixed with yellow ones and vice versa. But it is not recommended to mix green oils with red and yellow oils in any case - due to differences in the chemical composition of base oils and additives, which, having entered into a chemical reaction, can precipitate and seriously damage the hydraulics (for example, disable the pump ). So green hydraulic fluids can only be mixed with the same color and composition.

In addition to the consumer classification of hydraulic oils for power steering by color, a more serious nomenclature has been adopted - in terms of kinematic viscosity in the range of operating temperatures. Thus, mineral-based hydraulic fluids can operate at temperatures no higher than 90 degrees Celsius, while for semi-synthetic and synthetic oils this threshold is higher - up to 130 - 150 degrees Celsius. The low temperature threshold for these fluids is one - the normal operation of the power steering is ensured at a temperature of at least -40 degrees Celsius.

How to choose a fluid for power steering

The choice of power steering fluid should be based on two aspects: the manufacturer's recommendations and our advice on oil compatibility. Each automaker recommends a certain type of working fluid for power steering - which one can be found in the machine's manual. Also, the type of power steering can be indicated on the cover of the expansion tank, where the hydraulic fluid is poured. There are hydraulic oils that are recommended only for certain brands of cars - this is due to the design of the power steering system, the special material of the rubber parts used in it (for example, Febi 06161, SWAG 99 90 6161). Before replacing the hydraulic fluid in the power steering, consult with specialists at the official dealer center of the brand where your car was purchased. In this way, you will avoid many of the problems associated with the operation of the power steering.

The fluids used in the hydraulic booster can be divided according to several criteria:

  • Colour;
  • Compound;
  • Variety.

Color classification

It is wrong to be guided only by color gradation when choosing an oil, although this practice is widespread among car owners. It is also often indicated which color of liquid can be mixed, and which should not.

Mixing is contraindicated in liquids in composition and not in color, and since now both mineral water and synthetics can be presented in any color, this information should be treated very carefully.

Red ATF gear oil is usually synthetic, the Dexron brand from General Motors is considered the reference, but there are products from other manufacturers such as Revenol, Motul, Shell, Zic, etc.


The yellow oil produced and licensed by Daimler is used in Mercedes-Benz power steering systems. It can be synthetic and mineral.

Green oil. Most of them are multifunctional and universal fluids, in composition they can be both synthetic and mineral. They are used in hydraulic boosters, suspension and other systems that operate on liquids. It cannot be mixed with other colors, unless the manufacturer has declared full compatibility, for example, Comma PSF MVCHF is compatible with some types of Dexron.

Liquid composition

According to the composition of the power steering fluid, it can be divided into mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. The chemical composition determines the basic set of functions of the oil:

  • Viscosity characteristics;
  • Lubricating properties;
  • Corrosion protection of parts;
  • Anti-foaming;
  • Thermal and hydraulic properties.

Synthetics and mineral water cannot be mixed with each other, since the types of additives in them have cardinal differences.

Synthetics

These are high-tech fluids, in the production of which the most modern developments and additives are used. Petroleum fractions for synthetics are treated with hydrocracking. Polyesters, polyhydric alcohols and additives provide them with outstanding characteristics: a wide range of operating temperatures, a stable oil film, and a long service life.


The main reason why you cannot fill a synthetic-based hydraulic fluid in a power steering intended for mineral power steering is its aggressive effect on rubber products, of which there are many in the power steering. Where synthetics are used, rubber has a completely different composition and is made on a silicone basis.

Semisynthetics

A mixture of synthetic and mineral oils, thanks to which the latter receive significant improvements in characteristics: reduced foaming, fluidity, heat dissipation.


Semi-synthetic fluids include such well-known fluids as: Zic ATF Dex 3, Comma PSF MVCHF, Motul Dexron III and others.

Mineral water

Mineral oils contain petroleum fractions (85-98%), the remainder being additives that improve the performance of the hydraulic fluid.

They are used in hydraulic boosters, containing seals and parts based on ordinary rubber, since the mineral component is neutral, and is not harmful to rubber products, unlike synthetics.


Mineral fluids for power steering are the most inexpensive, but they also have a short service life. Mobil ATF 320 Premium is considered a good mineral water, Dexron oils up to and including IID were also mineral.

Different types of oils

Dexron- a separate class of ATF fluids from General Motors, produced since 1968. Dexron is a trademark manufactured by GM itself and others under license.

ATF(Automatic Transmission Fluid) - oils for automatic transmissions, often used by Japanese automakers and power steering.

PSF(Power Steering Fluid) - literally translated as power steering fluid.


Multi HF- special, universal power steering fluids with approvals from most automotive manufacturers. For example, the CHF fluid produced by the German company Pentosin (pentosin) has received approvals from BMW, Ford, Chrysler, GM, Porsche, Saab and Volvo, Dodge, Chrysler.

Can I mix oils

Mixing is permissible, but the manufacturer's recommendations must be followed. Most often, the packaging indicates with which brands and classes of oils one or another fluid for power steering can be mixed.

Do not mix synthetics and mineral water, as well as different colors, unless it is directly indicated. If there is nowhere to go, and you have to pour what is at hand, replace this mixture with the recommended one as soon as possible.

Is it possible to pour engine oil into the power steering

Many modern cars use power steering (GUR). Thanks to this device, the driver can force the vehicle to make a turn, with little effort. How often should the power steering fluid be changed?

Usually, car manufacturers do not specify the exact frequency of replacement of the fluid intended for the power steering. However, it is advisable that the tank is always filled to the normal level. We advise you to pay attention to the following recommendations:

  • during normal operation of the car (mileage - up to 10,000 km / year), the power steering fluid should be changed every 2 years,
  • if the vehicle is used intensively, it should be replaced once a year or after every 30,000 km.

Sometimes you can hear the opinion that the power steering fluid is capable of serving almost throughout the entire service life of the vehicle. But in reality this is not the case. The fact is that during the operation of the power steering, its assemblies are naturally subject to wear. As a result, metal dust and dirt can get into the oil. Therefore, a replacement is indispensable.

Where can I get information about the right power steering fluid?

Which power steering fluid is right for you? The answer to this question can be obtained in several ways:

  • usually the type of oil for power steering is indicated in the technical documents for the car,
  • also the information that interests you, as a rule, is indicated on the lid of the oil tank,
  • you can contact the dealership and ask the specialists working there.

Power steering oil and its main characteristics

The fluid that is used in the power steering system has several important characteristics that must be considered when choosing. This is:

  • base type,
  • Colour,
  • operational properties.

By the type of base, all products belonging to this category can be divided into three groups:

  • mineral,
  • semi-synthetic,
  • synthetic.

Mineral oils are characterized by a relatively low cost, they ensure the complete safety of rubber parts that are widely used in the power steering system. However, such fluids have a fairly high viscosity and tend to foam. However, in many cars it is recommended to use them.

Synthetic fluids for power steering have good lubricating and anti-corrosion properties, and their advantage is low foaming. However, this fluid is more commonly used in automatic transmissions. Semi-synthetics also have good performance properties.

The composition of the fluid intended for power steering contains various additives. They reduce the viscosity characteristics, reduce the formation of foam, slow down or suppress corrosion, and improve lubricating properties. Also, the power steering fluid, supplemented with special additives, effectively resists oxidation.

It should be borne in mind that different oils for power steering should not be mixed. When incompatible fluids are mixed, the additives in their composition can enter into a chemical reaction. This will lead to unpredictable consequences and is likely to cause significant deterioration in the properties of the oil. Therefore, when changing the oil, it is worth a good tank and only after that fill in a new fluid.

An important characteristic of power steering oil is viscosity. Modern automobiles typically use less viscous and more fluid products, which in turn are not well suited to vehicles that are relatively old.

High-quality power steering fluid resists high temperatures well, does not roll up, does not change its consistency.
