Mondeo 3 generations. Ford Mondeo III - model description. Modifications Ford Mondeo III

home / Repair and maintenance

The best car for accommodating all the "family values" is undoubtedly the station wagon. And among the cars of different brands, I would like to highlight the 2005 Ford Mondeo station wagon. This is the third generation of Mondeo, produced from 2000 to 2007, but in 2005 a restyling was carried out, thanks to which the fat model deserves much more attention.

Mondeo-3 was so "stuffed" with all kinds of "chips" that it has not lost its relevance in our time. Including thanks to its kinetic design. In those years, the specialists of the Ford company decided to give more "sportiness" to the Mondeo lineup and, naturally, these changes could not but affect the station wagon.

Ford Mondeo 2005 has everything you need to rightfully wear the prefix "sport". These are eighteen-inch wheels, and the swift lines of the body with a roof spoiler. All of these features add dynamics. There is also a "sporty" trend in the cabin. The driver's seat has good lateral support. Aluminum look inserts and red instrument panel illumination also add extra drive.

Mondeo Universal starts immediately with the Trend option. The salon is spacious enough. The plastic and materials of the seat upholstery are very high quality. The steering wheel with on-board computer control functions and a stereo system has adjustments for angle and reach. The "music" supplied in the basic version pleases with its quality and allows you to listen to records in MP3 format. The number of all kinds of pockets and glove compartments allows you to conveniently place all the necessary little things. Heated seats, washer nozzles, mirrors and, of course, the branded heated windshield can also be attributed to important details. But, undoubtedly, the main advantage of the station wagon is its spacious trunk. The volume of 490 liters allows you to load even very large suitcases without risking scratching the rear bumper. To do this, it is enough to pull out a special loading platform and your luggage will go into the trunk like on rails. Well, if the cargo is very large, the size of the trunk can be increased by folding the rear row of seats.

The Ford Mondeo 3 engine can be either diesel or gasoline. The volume starts from two liters, and the diesel engine is not inferior to the gasoline engine in acceleration. A two-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 140 horsepower paired with an automatic (optionally, you can choose "mechanics") gearbox responds perfectly to pressing the gas pedal at almost any speed. The car's cornering behavior is quite decent thanks to a fairly stiff suspension.

From the foregoing, we can conclude that Mondeo-3 is a good car, especially in the combination of price and quality. Of course, the 2005 model is a bit old, but the Ford Mondeo of the following years may be quite a logical purchase. At the same time, the price of Ford Mondeo 2006 is much lower than that of Ford Mondeo 2007, from which the fourth generation of this brand started, which is still being produced.

Ford Mondeo 3 (Ford Mondeo)- mid-size car of the European subsidiary of Ford. The struggle for leadership between representatives of the middle class business sedans is as follows - one clear favorite and a couple, to one degree or another, successful classmates trying not to be inferior to him. Unlike competitors, Ford almost always managed to guess the mood and needs of buyers, thanks to this Mondeo was one of the best-selling cars in the segment for a long time. More than 10 years have passed since the production of this generation of the model was discontinued, but the car is still in strong demand in the secondary market, competing with younger domestically produced cars. But how justified the purchase of a used Ford Mondeo 3 will be and what troubles the owners of this already middle-aged car face during operation, now we will try to find out.

A bit of history:

The name “Mondeo” (from the French “Monde” - “world”) was given to the car due to the fact that it was initially assumed that it would be developed by the design and engineering departments of the company “Ford” located around the world. However, the main part of the work on the creation of the new model was entrusted to the branch of Ford Werke Gmbh, located in Germany. The debut of the first Mondeo (Mk I) took place in January 1993, and serial production started in March. The novelty was intended to replace the outdated Ford Sierra on the market. The car was assembled at the Ford plant in Genk (Belgium). The production of this generation lasted until 1996.

The second generation Ford Mondeo (Mk II) debuted in 1996, but many experts perceived the novelty as a deep restyling of the previous generation of the car. The main changes from the predecessor were: modernized power units, redesigned front and rear parts of the body and slightly modified front panel of the passenger compartment. In 1999, the lineup was expanded with a "charged" version of the Ford Mondeo ST200. The release of the second generation of this model lasted until 2000.

The premiere of Ford Mondeo 3 (Mk III) on the world market took place in 2000. This generation was very different from its predecessors, not only in large dimensions (it became longer and wider), but also in a new solid interior design. Despite the fact that the car belonged to the budget class of sedans, many experts highly appreciated the new product. During the production period, the car was twice restyled (in 2003 and 2005), during which the line of power units and transmissions was updated. But the main emphasis was on changing the interior - each time they tried to make it more solid and comfortable. Production of the Ford Mondeo 3 was completed in 2007.

The debut of Ford Mondeo 4 took place in 2007. The novelty has become larger than its predecessor, not only externally, but also internally. The level of quality of interior finishing materials, as well as noise and vibration insulation, has significantly increased, and a lot of attention has been paid to active safety. Since March 2009, the car has been assembled at the Russian plant in Vsevolzhsk. In August 2010, a restyling was carried out, during which the hood, radiator grille, bumpers were changed, the optics were also improved and LED daytime running lights appeared.

The fifth generation of the model was presented in early 2012 in North America. The novelty has many similarities with the concept Ford Evos (Fusion), which debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of Ford Mondeo 3 with mileage

It makes no more sense to talk about the quality of the paintwork, since most of the copies presented on the secondary market have been repainted for one reason or another. If the car has not been painted yet, the paintwork will not be in the best condition, most often these are the consequences of minor damage (numerous chips, scratches). As for the corrosion resistance of the body, then, as a rule, serious problems do not arise, an exception may be cars of the first years of production - they begin to rust in hidden places (under the upholstery of the front of the cabin and trunk). You can also note the tendency to corrosion of wheel arches, sills, door edges and welds in the engine compartment. Also at risk are the exhaust system, side members, suspension attachment points, subframes and the subframe itself.

The main weak points of the body are plastic elements - bumpers, wheel arch liners and their fastenings. The problem is that with the arrival of the cold, they tan and break even from a minor blow. Other drawbacks of the body include the unreliability of the door hinges - they sag. Over time, the windshield seal loses its tightness, because of this, in rainy weather, moisture enters the interior. Before buying, be sure to check whether the floor under the feet of the driver and passenger is not wet, since this defect was unlikely to be eliminated before selling. The bonnet lock requires regular maintenance as it is susceptible to dirt and moisture. If you do not follow it (you need to regularly wash and lubricate it), there will be problems with its performance. Also, periodic lubrication is required on the trapezium wipers.

Power units

Ford Mondeo 3 was equipped with gasoline engines - 1.8 (110, 125 and 130 HP), 2.0 (145 HP), 2.5 (170 HP), 3.0 (204, 226 HP), and turbodiesel volumes of 2.0 (90, 116, 130 HP) and 2.2 (155 HP) liters. Among gasoline power units, in-line fours with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters are considered the most common. Both units are reliable and rarely cause problems; closer to 250,000 km, replacement of the timing chain and its tensioners is required. Their main disadvantages include the following: the timing belt has a keyless landing of the stars. To carry out this work, a qualified specialist is required, if overtightening or not tightening the bolts, everything will end in expensive engine repairs. It should also be noted that there are no factory overhaul sizes of pistons, therefore, during overhaul, you have to change the short block.

Before buying, listen to the operation of the engine, if in the area of the first cylinder you hear a rattling sound reminiscent of the knock of valves, most likely the damper in the intake manifold is worn out, replacement is only complete. For trouble-free operation of the engine, you need to monitor the condition of the spark plugs, since if they fail, the resource of the ignition coils and catalyst decreases. Of the weak points of the power units, one can note the unreliability of the fuel pump, thermostat, EGR valve. Some owners blame the difficulty of starting a cold engine. A car with a mileage of more than 200,000 km has an increased oil consumption due to problems with piston rings and valve seals. The manufacturer's declared resource of power units is 300-350 thousand km, but with proper maintenance, they can last 500,000 km.

Petrol V6 engines with a volume of 2.5 and 3.0 liters are less common. These power units are not only very similar to in-line fours, but have similar problems: a small resource of the fuel pump and flaps in the intake manifold, and the plastic impeller of the cooling pump is also a weak point (when replacing it is recommended to give preference to a pump with a metal impeller). Among the disadvantages of power units, one can note the unsuccessful design of the cooling system (the probability of engine overheating is high) and high fuel consumption.

Diesel engines Ford Mondeo 3

Diesel engines are no less reliable than gasoline engines, but unlike them, they have more capricious fuel equipment. The TDCi turbo engines equipped with the Delphi system deserve special attention. When buying a car with such a system, there is a high probability of encountering a breakdown of the injectors and the fuel pump, which, as a rule, ends with the repair of the entire injection system (the injection pump begins to drive metal chips). It is also worth mentioning the higher cost of maintenance, in addition, a significant part of European cars will be equipped with a particulate filter. Do not forget about the typical problems inherent in turbodiesel engines with high mileage - the EGR valve and the flow meter. By 150-200 thousand km, replacement of the dual-mass flywheel is required. To avoid big troubles, it is necessary to refuel only with high-quality diesel fuel and change the oil every 8-10 thousand km. Using the recommended SAE30 oil in an engine with a decent mileage may end up turning the piston liners (experts recommend using SAE40, or even SAE50).

Transmission

In the secondary market, Ford Mondeo 3 is available with the following gearboxes: 5 and 6-speed mechanics, as well as with a 4 and 5-speed automatic. Failure of manual transmissions is an infrequent phenomenon, but given the middle age of the car, you need to be ready to replace the clutch, as a rule, its resource is 140-160 thousand km. But the four-speed automatic transmission CD4E is the complete opposite of the mechanics and has a lot of weaknesses. The oil pump causes the most problems, since untimely diagnosis of its malfunction leads to an early failure of the main transmission elements. It is also worth noting the weak solenoids in the valve body and the chain in the drive. Cases of failure and double drum are not uncommon. Despite the fact that the cost of most spare parts is relatively low, restoration of the transmission will not be cheap, and you should not count on the long resource of the repaired box. It is extremely rare that they nurture more than 150,000 km.

The Jatco five-speed automatic (JF506E) turned out to be much more reliable, but it also has a number of disadvantages. The most common ailment is the rapid wear of the rubber piston seals and the pressure control solenoid. As a rule, by 200,000 km you have to change the entire set of solenoids and the valve body plate. It is also worth noting the tendency of the box to overheat (weak heat exchanger), after which a whole bunch of problems can come out. The differential does not like heavy loads, therefore, for those who like to light up, it is at risk - the failure of the differential often leads to the destruction of the case and the failure of the automatic transmission.

Reliability of running Ford Mondeo 3 with mileage

The front suspension of the Ford Mondeo 3 is traditional for most modern cars - MacPherson strut, but the rear suspension is the pride of Ford engineers - a multi-link with a steering effect. The weakest point of the suspension is the anti-roll bar, the original ones go 30-40 thousand km. The average resource of the bushings is 50-60 thousand km. Also, the front springs, shock absorbers and thrust bearings have a small resource - 70-90 thousand km, but the rear ones can last up to 150 thousand km. Ball joints run 100-120 thousand km, in the original they change only in assembly with a lever, which significantly increases the cost of repairs. Silent blocks can withstand up to 150,000 km. In the rear suspension, the shock absorber springs are considered a weak point - the extreme turns break off. You can also note the not very hardy levers, but despite this, they nurture more than 100,000 km of neat drivers.

In the steering system, the steering rack is not famous for its reliability (it starts knocking closer to 120,000 km, and by 200-250 km it can start to "bite" the steering wheel) and the power steering pump, fortunately, the replacement cost is not too high. To extend the resource of the rack and pump, you should adhere to two rules - do not turn the wheels in place and do not hold the steering wheel in the extreme position for a long time. The rest of the steering elements are reliable and have a good resource. So, for example, steering tips travel on average 80-100 thousand km, thrust - 120-150 thousand km. Mondeo 3 has responsive brakes, designed for high speeds, but not designed for our dirt, it is this that causes the rapid wear of discs and pads. If you do not use the handbrake, over time, corrosion will start to affect its cable sheath. If there is a problem, a sharp jerk of the handbrake can lead to deformation of the fasteners or the pad drive mechanism. Also, on cars over 12 years old, brake lines and calipers suffer from corrosion.

Salon

The quality of the interior trim materials for the Ford Mondeo 3 is average - some plastic elements are easily scratched and often squeak annoyingly. Of the weak points of the cabin, one can note the rapid wear of the handle pads, the unreliability of the lumbar support of the front seats, and the frame itself is not designed for large drivers. Despite the small amount of electronics, by modern standards, there are some drawbacks here. Of the minor troubles, one can note a dying climate control display, malfunctions of the central lock (replacement of microswitches is required) and power windows. A much more serious breakdown is the failure of the passenger compartment fan and malfunctions of the climate control unit.

Outcome:

Despite the fact that the Ford Mondeo 3 is not without flaws, in this price segment (up to $ 5000) it is one of the most interesting options in the secondary market. The best option for purchasing is a restyled copy with a two-liter engine paired with mechanics. Given the age of the car, its full diagnosis is not desirable, but an obligatory procedure, which in the future will help to save more than one hundred dollars.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

Tuning Ford Mondeo 3 is a variety of choice, assortment and many varieties of parts. There are beautiful aerodynamic body kits, modern LED optics, a variety of suspensions and much, much more.

"They meet by their clothes" - as they say here ... Tuning Ford Mondeo 3 is the very clothes by which you will be met, judged and examined. This is an important part of any person who wants to stand out from the gray mass of exactly the same. Who has a car of the highest level, what's next and nowhere else, and at the same time does not want to be like the rest. Even banal airbrushing allows you to emphasize your style, taste and capabilities.

Tuning Ford Mondeo 3: modern, perfect car

What should be the perfect car today? What qualities should you have? What, in the end, should it be "stuffed" with? No one can answer these questions clearly, for a number of important reasons. What can we say about Mondeo 3 tuning in general?

After all, a set of basic configurations will be enough for someone, and he will not see a need in a more expanded list of functionality. Someone is content with the standard body type, and will consider it silly to change it to some kind of sports version. There are those, perhaps even the lucky ones, who believe that his car already has everything from the last word of technology. Everyone has their own perfect car ... the concept of perfection is seen from different angles and prisms.

site - understanding all these nuances, knowing all such subtleties and desires, competently approaches the question: tuning Ford Mondeo 3.

Tuning Ford Mondeo 3 in our time

Today tuning Ford Mondeo 3 is a full-fledged, profitable business. The popularity of tuning is growing every day, every hour! More and more cars wanting to stand out from the whole gray mass are also added, and not a few.

Nowadays, the car has become so affordable that in some families it is not one, but two or even three. And they are all like a template, one to the other ... And this is well understood by manufacturers, tuning studios, shops and private masters.

Therefore, if today there is a desire to somehow stand out and highlight your car, then it will not be a problem. All kinds of suspensions (screw, adjustable, etc.), aerodynamic body kits, radiator grilles (from carbon to chrome), spoilers and more. All this is easy to find, purchase, and it will not be difficult to find a place where to put it all.

You just have to decide what exactly you want to change or transform. And we will do the rest! Mondeo 3 tuning is our strong point!

In the lineup of European companies, D-class sedans traditionally serve as a visiting card for budget manufacturers. Indeed, until recently, it was with him, with the family class, that the "real premium" of the big German three began, which means that the competition between well-equipped top-end cars of cheaper brands and premium ones was desperate - it was impossible to fall face down in the mud.

Until the release of the third generation, Ford Mondeo did not win in this battle - rather, on the contrary, it tried to catch up with competitors. German Opel, French and Japanese were clearly superior to Ford in the struggle for the consumer. However, Mondeo took the price, and in stock there was a trump card in the form of the title "Car of the Year". The size of the cabin turned out to be the main disadvantages of the model - it was unsuitable for this class, and the set of engines turned out to be not the most successful.

Older cars. Consumers did not care that the body was designed to install motors both longitudinally and transversely, to use all-wheel drive and several wheelbase options. And the emphasis on passive safety, which was made by the advertising of the model, in the blink of an eye became irrelevant after - the car in them showed a very mediocre result.

Ford Mondeo I and II

But you understand that such a large corporation as Ford Motor Company has the strength and will to do something sensible. It's just that "the first pancake" (and the Mondeo was the first car on a new front-wheel drive platform in Europe) turned out to be lumpy. The second generation was essentially a deep facelift of the first, but the development of the third was treated with all the attention and, perhaps, it finally turned out to be very successful. About him, in fact, and speech - the older "losers" are already practically irrelevant for a number of parameters, and Mondeo III still looks like a good fellow.

What is it good for?

The body design in the style of New Edge sets the car apart from the crowd of classmates - the good work of the designers is not outdated, looks great against the background of the later Focus II and many other cars. But the machine, on the other hand, is very conservative in design. Front-wheel drive, MacPherson strut at the front and a simple multi-link at the rear, in-line "fours" and V6 transversely under the hood, three body options - sedan, station wagon and liftback.

1 / 3

2 / 3

3 / 3

However, this is rather the merit of Mazda, whose AJ-series engines turned out to be "consumer goods" versions of the Jaguar, and from there they came to all Ford models. Diesel engines developed jointly with PSA by the Puma family here, several power grades, two displacement options and ... the glory of not the most successful engines. Although diesels with a volume of 2.2 liters were installed on the legendary Defender, and on the Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger pickups, they showed themselves excellently there. But for some reason, it was on the Mondeo and Transit that they had a bad reputation. The comparatively early facelift of 2003 was associated with changes in the ecological class and a certain reassessment of the complete sets in order to obtain a higher score for passive safety - the car has changed little structurally.

Breakdowns and problems in operation

Body and interior

As I already wrote, the body has become much stronger and more resistant to rust in comparison with its predecessor. Serious corrosion manifests itself only after 10-15 years of operation, and often in places hidden from the eyes. The exterior panels on most cars hold up perfectly well into old age, even if no special care has been taken. There are also specimens with surface corrosion and numerous paintwork problems, but most often these are the consequences of minor injuries that were not healed in time. And also - work in a very bad climate, parking in wet garages, etc. Such machines are rare, and you can usually find a "flaw" in their biographies.

For most of the remaining examples, the weak points are the front suspension struts, sills, door bottoms, rear arches, attachment points for the subframes and the subframes themselves. Yes, these massive parts are at risk here. The first traces are usually worth looking for in the depths of the seams of the engine compartment, but the exterior of the car can be flawless for a long time. The door design is prone to sagging, and the liftback also has weak points in the rear of the body. It is worth checking the condition of the body elements under the upholstery - they can crack corny, you will need welding. Small cracks most often manifest themselves in metal creaking on irregularities not related to the operation of the suspensions, and it is difficult to detect them. From regularly breaking components - all the outer plastic, especially the wheel arch liners. But the bumpers are too fragile here, mainly in a light frost. If in the summer a blow can pass without consequences, then a blow to the same place in winter will definitely cause numerous "fractures" - the foam buffers in the bumpers are often jammed, and the plastic does not withstand deformation. The interior is very good and the body tolerates age better. The seats are the hardest, the lumbar support often breaks, and in general the frame is rather weak. The fabric of the driver's seat is prone to tearing. But the trims begin to wear off only after more than 200 thousand kilometers of runs, and the pads of the handles, which are easy to replace, will be the first to give up. Dying climate displays are characteristic of almost all aged cars, Mondeo is no exception.

1 / 2

2 / 2

Poor operation of the central locking is also not a great surprise and is treated by replacing the microswitches. It is much worse that the interior fan is frankly unreliable - its extremely unsuccessful design has lived its own life literally from the age of three. He may suddenly stop working, then turn on, work for a year and then get up again. The windows are rather weak, but the price of the issue is also low. In general, this means that there are no serious complaints about the car, it's just that the quality is not premium, but the prices for spare parts do not bite, the repair is simple. But there is a wide choice of equipment, among the options there is a heated rear sofa and front seats with ventilation, and even several types of "sports" salons. The traditional trouble of all Ford cars of that period was the hood lock. The larva is located under the emblem on the radiator grill and breaks down very quickly and at the most inopportune moment. There are several solution options, from a plug-in rubber cover to installing a lock kit from Mondeo IV instead of the native one, where it simply opens from the passenger compartment, like all "normal" cars.

Electrician

Electrical problems did not pass the car - the quality of the wiring suffers here, you need to check the condition of the connectors regularly. The wiring of the cabin suffers from the accumulation of moisture in the carpets, the engine compartment wiring crumbles due to the heat. Failure ABS sensors and wiring under the bottom of the car. Not too often, but the problems are varied. On cars with ESP, the steering wheel position sensor can be thrown up. On almost all cars, after five to seven years, the outside air temperature sensor fails, the climate control after that begins to go crazy. The generator is not a model of reliability, it almost always requires replacement after six to seven years of operation, its bearings and rectifier are rather weak. The gasoline engine control system has a conventional ignition module and there are spark plug wires - you should not forget about them, they can easily fail. It is recommended to change the candles at least once every 40 thousand kilometers. The radiator fans and their wiring should also be revised at the same frequency.

Suspension, brakes and steering

Not the most reliable steering rack and power steering pump pleases with a low replacement price. Yes, knocking will usually lead to a progressive leak in a short time. Yes, you need to be very careful to violate the "grandfather's ban" - not to turn the wheels on the spot, otherwise both the pump and the rack will suffer. And even more so, do not hold the rail on the limiter for an extra second. But the price of an item in the region of 10 thousand rubles is quite high even for a poor owner, and on good roads it can cover more than a hundred thousand kilometers. Of course, the result is not outstanding, but quite acceptable. The pendants are also quite reliable. In the front, in the risk zone, the springs and strut supports. The rear bushing of the front arm is relatively inexpensive to change, and the ball joint is reliable. But in any case, the node resource under normal operating conditions is not less than 60-100 thousand km before the first bulkhead. If the repair is done in a complex, then it will not bother.

The springs are also weak at the back, they often break off the extreme turns. And the mnogorchazhka also has not very strong levers, and only for the longitudinal one there are "native" repair kits. The rest are also being repaired, but the rod metal itself is too thin for reliable repair. The station wagons, by the way, have a completely different suspension, stronger, with a completely different set of components. Those who like to load the car to the fullest, the rear suspension often goes only 50 thousand km before overhaul with the replacement of one or two levers, but most owners, fortunately, drive empty, and the resource is quite acceptable, comparable to the resource of the front suspension.

The braking system is characterized by weak calipers, especially at the rear, not very reliable line pipes and frequent electrical problems with the sensors and the control unit. The calipers are corny to sour due to not very successful anthers and thick brake pads - here you can see the consequences of an attempt to reduce the cost of operation. Brake lines are not well protected and corrode at around 10 years of age. It is dangerous, but not too expensive if replaced in a timely manner. The repair is simple - the flexible copper tube fits perfectly in place of the old steel one. Also, brake discs are prone to wobbling and uneven wear, but again, a lot of inexpensive non-original makes this not too important.

Transmission

Absolutely familiar Ford mechanical boxes of the MTX75 and MMT6 series do not have any special problems and are extremely reliable. Even on the "charged" version of ST22, the box works perfectly. The situation is different with machine guns. The old four-speed automatic Ford CD4E, which is found mainly on pre-styling cars, is not at all a stronghold of reliability. Of course, the box has been produced since 1994, but it has a lot of weak points. First of all, it is not the most successful oil pump, which can easily fail with understandable consequences. Weak solenoids in the valve body, not the most successful chain in the drive, and the constructive is not like Aisin and Jatco. The double drum also breaks regularly. Spare parts are inexpensive, and the box is well known for repair, they are made easily. But this does not mean that the repair will be inexpensive - the "standard" price of any problem with the automatic transmission applies here too: for 70,000 rubles you will be promised "everything is zero." It will break down again rather soon, on average, the resource after a good bulkhead does not exceed 150 thousand km, but often it turns out to be three times less.

Most of the restyled cars have a much more interesting automatic transmission under the hood, the Jatco 5F31J, aka JF506E. Such a box was installed on Nissan and Mitsubishi of Japanese and American assemblies, as well as on some Volkswagens, where it bears the name 09A. This five-speed gearbox is one of the most budget-friendly designs, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The main problems are early wear of rubber piston seals and clogging of the pressure control solenoid with dirt. With runs "over 200", the entire set of solenoids and the valve body plate are often changed. Many problems are caused by overheating due to a weak heat exchanger. There are enough other weak points both in mechanics and in control hydraulics, but in general, the design is quite successful. With careful operation, it will almost always go 150, or even 200 thousand km, even without modifications. And it is convenient to repair. For fans of traffic light races, a differential is also at risk, and its breakdown usually leads to a complete failure of the automatic transmission due to the destruction of the case. Like many five-steps, it is strongly recommended to install an external enlarged automatic transmission radiator (from a four-step, for example) and an external filter with a magnetic trap. Fans of contract parts will also be interested in other information: on Mazda, the box was called JA5A-EL and was installed on Mazda 5, 6, MPV and Atenza. Apart from the name, the differences are minimal.

Motors

Most of the engines on the Mondeo are in-line fours with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters from the well-deserved Mazda L series family. Chain motors with a good design, good boosting capabilities, and at the same time extremely inexpensive. Yes, the seals are weak here, the crankcase ventilation system, the throttle is not very reliable, it is prone to leaks, the ignition system is old-fashioned, and the intake is often leaky due to a bunch of weak connections - from injector rings to inconvenient clamps. The intake manifold has one very unpleasant feature - the length shift flaps with high mileage can fall into the cylinder, causing either valve damage, or even cylinder seizure and piston damage. In practice, the motor successfully passes its two hundred kilometers in any mode, and if the owner wishes, it can swing 350 - 500 km. The timing chain will require replacement at about 200 thousand km, which is almost a record for the latest generation chain motors. Of the far-fetched troubles, one can also recall the keyless landing of the timing stars, which slightly increases the requirements for the qualifications of the repairmen - tightening the mounting bolts or an incorrect tightening torque will lead to "Stalingrad" after a phase violation. In practice, this is rarely the case, but for many it will be an unpleasant surprise for the lack of repair dimensions of the pistons. If a major overhaul is necessary, it is recommended to simply replace the shot block, since it is inexpensive. The engine compartment wiring is also not very reliable, but it will almost certainly last ten years, and with easy repairs - and all 15. It rarely requires a complete replacement, and fires in the engine compartment of Mondeo rarely occur. Overheating due to the unsuccessful design of the pipes of the cooling system, pumps (however, this is more for 2.5 and 3.0 liter engines) occur regularly. They also often criticize not the most successful firmware for 1.8 engines, because of which they are prone to "floating" rpm, and the engine may even suddenly stall if the throttle valve is a little dirty.

Buying a Mondeo makes sense if you choose the version with a reliable engine. Only in this case it will be possible to fully enjoy a large and comfortable car at an affordable price. Together with the Ford Mondeo 3, you will get good driving performance, a wide range of affordable and inexpensive spare parts and ... corrosion!

In order not to regret anything in the future, it is better to prefer versions with gasoline engines, but not the 1.8 SCi. The bad reputation of Ford diesel engines does not contribute to the high demand for the 2.0 TDCi, such as, for example, the Volkswagen Passat with the beloved TDI. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to recommend versions 2.0 and 2.2 TDCi, but only the end of production. Although TDDi series engines are simpler and cheaper to maintain, cars with them, as a rule, are already very "worn out".

In older specimens, crankshaft oil seals often begin to leak. The diesel engines of the Duratorq series had problems with the Delphi fuel equipment from the first days, but over time the extent of the defect has significantly decreased. In Ford diesels, the dual-mass flywheel often wears out prematurely. Replacement with a clutch kit will require at least 25,000 rubles.

All engines under the hood of Mondeo have a timing chain drive, which in most cases does not require maintenance up to 250-300 thousand km. The cost of a new set is about 8,000 rubles.

Typical engine malfunctions

Gasoline 1.8 l

Engines with a working volume of 1.8 liters are quite popular. But recommending them with a clear conscience is difficult. Motors with a power of 110 and 125 hp. reliable enough. Like all engines in the Duratec family, they do not tolerate LPG operation well.

The 130 hp SCi series motor should be avoided. with direct fuel injection. This unit is rare, and therefore there are difficulties with the availability of spare parts. In general, the unit is reliable, but very sensitive to fuel quality.

Common problems with a 1.8-liter unit are related to the failure of the thermostat, fuel pump, EGR valve and the so-called idle speed valve stepper motor.

Don't count on very low fuel consumption. For example, the 125bhp variant handles the weight of the Mondeo with confidence, but in order to go fast, you need to maintain high revs. Some owners complain about poor engine starting, especially "cold". There are also known cases of problems with piston rings and valve seals - all this increases oil consumption for waste. Repair, unfortunately, will not come cheap

Gasoline 2.0 l

It is the most versatile gasoline engine ever. Motor with a power of 145 hp provides decent dynamics, and fuel consumption is not much higher than that of the 1.8-liter unit. Mondeo with 2.0 Duratec engine consumes on average a little more than 9 liters per 100 km.

There are no complaints about reliability. Malfunctions, as in the case of the 1.8-liter engine, are associated with auxiliary equipment. For example, due to the EGR valve or the crankshaft position sensor. In older specimens, the flaps in the intake manifold also fail.

You can try to fix some of the faults yourself. So cleaning the stepper motor does not require any special knowledge. In addition, prices for the main components are generally affordable, with the exception of EGR. It is not necessary to install equipment for operation on liquefied gas.

Ford Mondeo Mk.III 2000 - 2004

GasolineV6 2.5L and 3.0L

The six-cylinder engines of the Duratec family are considered successful and reliable. The most popular is the 170-horsepower version of the 2.5 L V6. But the engine consumes quite a lot of fuel - on average 10-11 l / 100 km, and at the same time does not dazzle with performance. 3.0L V6 engine with 204 HP more lively, but even more voracious than the 2.5-liter. The 220-horsepower version of the 3-liter unit was used on the sports model Mondeo ST.

Common V6 problems: failure of the fuel pump and flaps in the intake manifold, destruction of the impeller of the cooling system pump - it is better to replace it with a pump with a metal impeller.

When deciding on a 6-cylinder engine, it is necessary to take into account the higher operating costs. The spare parts themselves are not expensive, but the need for them is regular!

Diesel 2.0TDDI

The TDDi series engines were installed in the Ford Mondeo 3 only until the first restyling in 2003. Even then, they were not considered modern. So direct fuel injection was realized using a Bosch VP30 or 44 rotary pump. Engine characteristics are mediocre. Buying such a car is a bad idea today.

Firstly, you should not count on a mileage of less than 200,000 km. Secondly, the power plant has several serious design flaws. A dual-mass flywheel, pump and ancillary drive pulley have very low durability. But in most cars, these defective components have long been replaced. Thus, the risk of a malfunction is significantly reduced, but this does not mean that TDDi can be completely trusted.

The 116-horsepower version of the motor provides better performance. Average fuel consumption usually does not exceed 7 l / 100 km.

Diesel 2.0 and 2.2TDCi

These are the first Ford common rail diesel engines. TDCi - obtained as a result of the modernization of the 2.0 TDDi engine. Therefore, it is not surprising that they have common problems affecting durability.

2.0 TDCi 2001-2004 suffered regularly from injector failure. After a while, the high-pressure pump began to drive metal chips and disable the injectors. The dual-mass flywheel also does not last long. In addition, there are typical problems typical for turbodiesels that have served - the EGR valve and the flow meter.

During the production process, Ford made efforts to address the 2.0 TDCi's vulnerabilities, and it should be recognized that the number of problems has been significantly reduced. Today prices for injectors are significantly lower than in the past - 23,000 rubles per piece.

The engines of the TDCi family have good performance, and the mileage is currently not as astronomical as that of the TDDi. The 2.0 TDCi engine is most often found in two modifications: 116 and 130 hp. The 90-horsepower version is very rare and not recommended due to its weak dynamics.

2.2 TDCi - Less popular, but certainly deserves attention due to its good performance.

Ford Mondeo Mk.III 2004 - 2007

Transmission

The third Mondeo was equipped with a 5-speed mechanics (MTX75) and one of two automatic machines. The 4-speed CD4E was paired with a 2-liter petrol engine, while the 5-band Jatco F506E was paired with a 2.5-liter petrol and 2.0-liter diesel engine.

The mechanics are very reliable. The clutch has to be changed after 200-250 thousand km (8,000 rubles per set). The machine will last 250-300 thousand km, and after that it will require repairs - from 40 to 70 thousand rubles.

Other malfunctions

The body of a Ford Mondeo is quickly affected by rust. Try to find at least one with healthy wheel arches and door edges. We assure you - it will not be easy. Ford was aware of the magnitude of the problem, but did nothing significant to dramatically change the situation for the better.

Rust attacked cars with equal force, both at the beginning and at the end of production. At risk of the chassis is the front belt, side members, the exhaust system, and the body - doors, wheel arches and the hood. So if you are planning to buy a Mondeo, be sure to put the car on a lift and accurately assess the condition of key components. Another common "cosmetic" defect is sagging bumpers.

Much less complaints about the suspension. On the front axle, the struts and anti-roll bar bushings wear out quickly, but this is quite normal. Sometimes CV joints fail.

Ford Mondeo Mk.III 2000 - 2004

The rear suspension arms are quite tough. The sedan and hatchback versions may require replacement of the auxiliary beam cushions. The easiest way out of the situation is to replace the suspension components with more durable ones from the station wagon. Note also the breakage of the springs.

After 150-200 thousand km, the steering rack may knock or leak. And after 250-300 thousand km sometimes the steering wheel starts to "bite". In the latter case, it will not be possible to get off with the repair. The rail will have to be replaced - 20,000 rubles for an analogue or 70,000 rubles for an original.

There are also problems with the electrician. So in 2003 on the agenda was the question of the unwillingness of the air conditioner to independently control the air temperature in the cabin. The driver had to manually select the optimal mode. In addition, a generator failure (a defective voltage regulator - about 5-6 thousand rubles), a windshield wiper is possible, and sometimes the central locking is buggy.

Ford Mondeo Mk.III 2004 - 2007

The quality of the interior is average - some plastic elements look terrible, easily scratched and often squeak annoyingly.

Conclusion

A well-equipped, comfortable and spacious car for 200-300 thousand rubles is a tempting offer that excites the minds of many motorists. Unfortunately, a Ford Mondeo Mk III at this price tends to be bogged down and soon starts generating monstrously high maintenance costs.

To get the real pleasure of owning such a car, it is recommended to find a young and well-groomed specimen with a 2.0 Duratec 145 hp gasoline engine.
