The Continental plant (owner of the company) has been producing Matador tires in Russia since October 2013. In the same year, a representative office was founded, purchases from abroad were stopped.

History of the Matador company

The brand dates back to 1905, when a plant was launched in the town of Pukhov, producing rubber hoses and belts. Initially, the concern was not focused on the production of tires, but over time and changes in customer demand in 20 years, the company produces the first batch of car tires under the name "MATADOR". This was facilitated by the large financial contribution of banks in Austria and Hungary.

In 1932, the Bratislava and Prague factories were merged, and the production of automobile tires was established. During the World War II, the company was experiencing financial difficulties, but since 1946 it has resumed its activities. Truck and passenger tires are produced under the name "BARUM". Fundamental changes have appeared since 2007, when the shares were bought by the Continental company and began production of Matador tires. Since the end of 2008, the entire package belongs to the Continental brand.

The history of the Matador brand dates back to 1905, when a small enterprise for the production of rubber products (belts, hoses, etc.) was founded in Slovakia. In 1911 the company underwent a small reorganization, and the first tires of the Matador brand were produced in 1925.

The products immediately became popular due to their good functional characteristics, high strength and long service life. A confirmation of its impeccable quality was the fact that the car of Tomáš Garriga (the first president of Czechoslovakia) was equipped with Matador tires.

Until 1931, the company was a monopoly on the Czech market, so its products were used as factory equipment on Skoda, AERO, Tatra, etc. The company developed rapidly and began to conquer the European market, but during the Second World War, the production of tires was practically curtailed.

By 1946, there was a shortage of wheeled products in the country, which served as an impetus for the further development of the enterprise. In 1947, construction began, and in 1950, a new plant was opened in Pukhov, where the production of cameras and tires for cars, trucks and agricultural vehicles was established.

Five years later, a conveyor belt was put into operation at the enterprise, and in 1971 the production of passenger radial tires began. However, at that time all products were manufactured under the Barum brand, and only after the privatization of the enterprise in 1993, the historical name was returned to it, and the Matador trademark returned to the market again. Two years later, a joint venture with the Russian "Omskshina" was opened, and the cities of Omsk and Pukhov became twin cities.

In 1998, a strategic partnership was started with the famous Continental concern. The first co-product was truck tires. In 2007, Continental bought a 51% controlling stake in Matador, a year later the share was increased to 66%, and in 2009 the German tire giant acquired the remaining 34% of the shares and became the full owner of the Slovak company and the Matador brand.

Organizational and structural changes have had a positive impact on product quality and production volumes. After the opening of a new workshop in Pukhov in 2010, the company began to produce 13 million passenger and 2.4 million truck tires annually.

Soon the management of the concern made a strategic decision to increase the production volume up to 25 million tires per year. And since 2014, Matador wheel products have been produced at the Russian Continental plant located in Kaluga.

An excursion into history

An inexpensive tire can be of high quality - this was confirmed by the Matador brand of the German concern Continental. The production of these tires began in Slovakia in 1932 and continues successfully to this day. They gained fame in Russia after the construction of the Matador-Omskshina plant in 1995. In 2013, the company was completely taken over by the German giant Continental. Such a turn in the fate of the brand had a positive effect on the quality of the products.

Matador tires are now produced in many Continental factories throughout Europe. A significant amount of production of these tires in demand on the market comes from the ultra-modern plant of the Continental concern, which was launched in Kaluga at the end of 2014.

Reasons for the popularity of the Slovak brand

Matador tires are popular with drivers primarily because of their low price. At the same time, the tires of the Slovak brand managed to prove themselves well.

Summer models provide good handling on wet asphalt, responsive to braking and steering wheel movements. Winter tires allow the car to travel safely on snowy and icy roads. All Matador tires, regardless of seasonality, are resistant to temperature changes and provide comfortable driving on any road.

In the sales areas of the AUTOEXPERT chain you will find all the popular models of the brand. In addition, when visiting our tire centers, we offer free diagnostics of the condition of the wheels, brake system, suspension. And when you buy a set of wheels, you get a discount on tire fitting up to 100%. For those who are not used to wasting time, there is an electronic registration for the service.

The Slovak trade mark Matador dates back to 1905. It all started with the production of rubber hoses and belts, but already in 1932 the company mastered the production of tires. In 1945, after the formation of Czechoslovakia, it became state property. The tire manufacturing plant was located in Pukhov. The products were supplied under the brand name Barum. The company returned the name Matador only in 1993, when it passed from state ownership to private ownership.

Tire characteristics

For the production of tires, only advanced technologies are used, in particular, a computer simulation system. Thanks to this, treads with the best technical characteristics are created. The tires are distinguished by their durability and excellent grip properties. The main focus is on a comfortable ride and preserving the environment. The latest models have stronger frames and better directional stability. On sale under this brand are sold:

  • summer tires;
  • winter shins;
  • all-season models.

For passenger cars, tires are presented in standard sizes of 13-20 inches.

Winter tires

Tires designed for winter use are characterized by increased grip and reliable braking even on icy surfaces. This is achieved thanks to a special tread pattern and the use of modern high-quality materials. So, MP50 Sibir Ice tires are popular. On sale are presented in 2 versions: A and B. V-shaped tread pattern. It provides better road holding on ice-covered roads. The MP92 Sibir Snow tire with a Z-shaped tread pattern and a large number of transverse grooves is not inferior in technical characteristics. It does not allow aquaplaning to occur and has high braking performance on slippery surfaces.

Summer and all-season tires

The range of summer tires from the Matador company is quite wide. The MP16 Stella 2 has a proven track record of using Voc Free technology. It consists in the use of a special environmentally friendly silicone mixture. As a result, the tire is durable, with good braking performance and grip, and low noise levels. The MP47 Hectorra 3 rubber from Matador has an increased mileage resource. It has an asymmetric tread pattern, so it shows good handling both on wet surfaces and on dry ones. For SUVs, as well as for the latest car models, MP82 Coquerra 2 tires are suitable. Their advantages: long mileage, lack of aquaplaning, quietness, excellent maneuverability.

The range of all-season tires is also varied. The MPS 125 Variant model is worth highlighting. It features versatility, a high level of safety on snowy and wet surfaces, and an optimized tread pattern. Suitable for use in light trucks.
