As we wrote earlier, the Research Center for Road Safety Problems of the Russian Federation began to develop. The new GOST license plates should appear in the fall of 2018. It was reported that sketches of state numbers, made in accordance with the new GOST, are ready and awaiting feedback from representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Today, the first sketches of license plates made according to a new type have appeared on the Internet. The photographs of the sketches show several options for rooms, their dimensions and style of execution.
At the moment, several options are being considered for how license plates may look. For example, according to one of the proposed sketches, the region code can be transferred from the right corner to the left side of the license plate. In another variation, the possibility of completely refusing to indicate this code is considered.
For rare cars, sports cars, motorcycles, as well as mopeds, it is planned to introduce separate types of state registration numbers. From the futuristic, the possibility of using polymer license plates and radio frequency fixation (probably to track fugitive violators) is being discussed.
A few more innovations will be changes in the size of license plates for motorcycles, the introduction of square-shaped rear license plates for cars brought from the United States and Japan, which are many on today's roads in the country. And finally, if the NIC still refuses the numbers of the new “square” standard for American and Japanese cars, most likely it will indicate standardized places for drilling ordinary license plates, because, as you know, it is very difficult to fix a regular license plate on a non-standard bracket on cars from the USA . And according to the law, it is forbidden to drill numbers on your own.
At the beginning of September, the news was published in print media and on Internet portals that new license plates would appear on cars in Russia in 2018. Since then, disputes about the need for number reform, as well as discussions of possible designs and changes, have not stopped.
The number of cars in the country is growing every year. This phenomenon has caused a serious problem - the lack of license plate combinations in some regions. To temporarily resolve this issue, several regional codes are used in individual republics and regions, which often leads to confusion. Moscow is a prime example.
Now car signs are issued in accordance with GOST, which was approved back in 1993. Since the trend in the market has changed significantly over the past years, the Government decided to introduce new state numbers in Russia.
The relevant bill will also solve another important problem. Drilling license plates is prohibited under current law, but owners of American and Japanese cars are faced with the fact that the dimensions of the numbers do not match the frame. As a result, it is necessary to use special adapters, which do not guarantee reliable fastening, especially at high speed. Properly sized signs will help avoid these problems.
What will be the new numbers?
Rumors about new car numbers that will be used in Russia from 2018 have not yet received confirmation or refutation from official sources. Representatives of the authorities have repeatedly mentioned the need for changes. Information appeared in the media that a project with a new design of signs was submitted to Rosstandart for approval. It should be considered before the end of the year, although car owners cannot get acquainted with it yet.
Information about what the new numbers will be is very different. There are rumors about the following options:
- Russian license plates will become similar to European ones. Regional codes will be completely abandoned. The number will consist of eight characters (letters and numbers), which will give a huge number of combinations.
- The previous format with the region code will be preserved, but various types will be added, which will temporarily solve the problem. For vintage cars, sports cars, motorcycles, American and Japanese cars, plates of a different size will be provided.
- The number will consist of three letters indicating the region, two numbers and four more letters. In addition, the coat of arms of the region or city and the inscription rus will be displayed. To avoid confusion, similar letters will not be used. New combinations will be made up of 17 Latin letters.
Which of the proposed options will be adopted remains unknown. In any case, all measures will be developed to protect against counterfeiting. A special font and billions of unique combinations are the main ways to protect.
Timing of changes
Significant changes regarding the new numbers will not begin until 2018 at the earliest. Until the end of this year, the new standard will only be approved. Consideration of innovations is scheduled for May next year. If the government passes the corresponding bill, it will take several more years for the transition.
Most likely, the first license plates in a modified format will be received by vehicle owners in such cases:
- when registering a purchased car;
- in case of loss of the old number;
- when re-registering the car to another owner.
The first time will be valid and old numbers. It will take more than one year to completely switch to the new standard. Although it is possible that they will not completely ban old-style signs.
Owners of vehicles with old numbers will be able to make a replacement at will. To do this, you will need to contact the relevant authorities with a written application.
The chip is a unique technology
Some sources claim that new numbers on cars from 2018 will be equipped with chips. This is a unique technology that has no analogues in the world yet. The chip will contain all the detailed information about the car, including its history. Data will be read both day and night, including from those signs that are not readable.
Automotive expert Igor Mozharetto shared his opinion on this matter and said that it is still quite difficult to implement this initiative. Installing the chip is a simple task. In addition, it is inexpensive, but the equipment that can read information from it requires considerable investment. While this initiative will not be implemented in the coming years, although the future belongs to technology and electronics.
Other experts and government officials are of a similar opinion. The main arguments are the need for large financial investments in the development of equipment and the study of all details, as well as an insufficient technical base.

The current license plate format has been operating in Russia since 1993. Since then, new types of license plates have been repeatedly introduced, three-digit designations of regions have appeared, but the standard has not fundamentally changed.
This time there will be no serious innovations either, although rumors about a complete change in the format of license plates appear from time to time. So far, we are only talking about the introduction of several new or changing existing types of license plates.
One of the main innovations of GOST is reduced motorcycle numbers. The current 24.5 x 16 cm plates are too large for modern two-wheeled vehicles, and the new smaller signs (19 x 14.5 cm) will fit on motorcycle license plates without any problems.
Also, the new standard will please owners of privately imported cars from Japan or America with a “square” area for a rear number. Now it will be possible to order a license plate of 29×17 cm in size from the traffic police with symbols arranged in two rows.
It is planned to introduce a new type of numbers for mopeds with engines of more than 50 "cubes" that do not fall under the motorcycle standard. These will be rectangular plates with two rows of symbols according to the “AA 12 AA” pattern.
Two more new types of signs are designed for sports and classic cars - they can be recognized by the letter "C" or "K" separated by a stripe, respectively. However, there are no rules for registration of such equipment yet.
Finally, the new GOST lifts the ban on drilling holes in the room. It will be allowed to make additional holes for attaching the sign, if the holes do not touch the symbols or the flag.
According to Kommersant's sources, one should not expect the issuance of new types of license plates to begin in January. The state traffic inspectorate will need time to change its own regulatory documents in accordance with GOST and to issue stocks of numbers of old formats.
Rosstandart approved a new standard for state registration plates of vehicles: the corresponding order is posted on the official website of the department. The new GOST R 50577-2018 changes a similar document with the number 50577-93 and comes into force on January 1, 2019.
Rumors about changes in GOST have been around for a long time and are overgrown with new fantastic assumptions. However, in reality, the changes are not so significant and will not affect the bulk of motorists. They are important primarily for owners of cars imported from Japan and America through "gray" channels, owners of classic and racing cars, motorcyclists and owners of off-road motorcycles.
According to Kommersant, which managed to get acquainted with the new document, ten new types of registration plates are being introduced in the country. For cars with non-standard plates for attaching numbers, two-line rear plates are legalized. They eliminate the need for adapters, and now it will be possible to drill non-standard holes for fasteners in the numbers, as long as the symbols are not damaged.
A new format is provided for classic cars: a large letter "K" will appear in a separate section on the left. And for sports cars allowed on public roads, a sign of the same format will differ in the letter "C". By the way, veteran cars with square license plates can also be equipped with two-line signs.
A gift to motorcyclists - reduced size numbers: 190x145 mm instead of the current 245x160 mm. Such signs will be placed on most mounting platforms for imported motor vehicles, which have occupied this market almost entirely. The same numbers will become mandatory for ATVs and scooters with a displacement of more than 50cc. There are no plans to equip small-capacity vehicles with state license plates yet. In addition, motor vehicles of foreign diplomatic missions will now have numbers with a red background, like their cars.
However, it is not worth hoping that the new license plates will save you from the ubiquitous traffic cameras: manufacturers of such equipment assure that by the time the new GOST comes into force, the cameras will be supplemented with the function of recognizing such numbers.
