5w50 oil decoding. Car oils and everything you need to know about motor oils. Classification of engine oils

home / Buying \ Selling

Few know how to choose 5w 50 motor oils correctly. In addition to lubricating engine parts, they ensure the removal of various deposits. This enables all elements to function smoothly. Foreign particles trapped in the power unit can cause damage to it. Car oil helps to wash them off and remove them from the engine.

When driving, regardless of the outside temperature, the power unit heats up, because of this, its parts are subject to wear. Any car manufacturer recommends which engine oils are best for their car.

Properties and types of lubricants

Today's manufacturers produce many different motor oils. They all differ in origin and cost. The main lubricant fluid can be both elements obtained during the extraction and processing of petroleum products, and chemicals made in laboratory conditions. Surprisingly, laboratory-produced synthetic motor oils are much better than natural oils, which are also called mineral water. This is due to the fact that synthetics pass many tests.

During use, the car can be in different conditions (temperature, speed). This affects the functioning of the motor. Mineral water, which is poured into the internal combustion engine, is often unable to adapt to changing conditions. Synthetics can change their own parameters. To ensure a good effect, lubricants have been developed and tested that combine synthetics and mineral water (semi-synthetics), which, due to their own characteristics, can be used in a wide variety of cars.

Timely oil change will increase engine runtime

If it is written in the operating manual that it is better to pour mineral water into the engine, you do not need to use synthetics / semi-synthetics, because they have a different oil viscosity. Because of this, oil can leak out of the motor through its rubber elements. For each machine, a specific oil viscosity is recommended, established through tests. The driver must take into account the conditions under which he intends to drive the car. Grease performance is temperature dependent. The car oil will be liquid in summer and viscous in winter.

Too thick grease will not be able to fulfill its own task, it will poorly lubricate the engine parts. This will lead to high friction. An overly liquid petroleum product will not be able to prevent wear of engine parts, because it will simply leak away.

Winter lubricants are quite liquid. This is necessary so that the crankcase can start the engine. If in cold weather you use an oil that is intended for use in summer, it will be too viscous, the engine simply will not start. Conversely, if winter grease is poured in the heat, the wear of the parts will greatly increase. Rapid wear of the power unit can lead to quite serious malfunctions.

Typically, seasonal oils need to be changed every five to ten thousand kilometers. If the car is rarely used, it is advisable to pour universal car oils that combine the properties of summer and winter lubricants.

Pros of 5w-50

The Mobil company is considered one of the best manufacturers of lubricants. In its assortment there are oils with different characteristics and composition. Motor oils "Mobil" are currently considered high quality synthetics, which provide comfortable and long-term use of the car. 5w-50 advantages:

  1. Car manufacturers recommend 5w-50 for both new and used vehicles.
  2. Tests have confirmed that the operating rates are very high. Suitable for all seasons.
  3. 5w-50 protects the motor from wear and corrosion. The unique additives that make up the lubricant were developed by Mobil specialists, and they have carried out many tests. The additives do not allow harmful elements to accumulate in the oil, do not allow soot to form. Thanks to them, the lubricant does not change its own excellent performance indicators for a sufficiently long time.
  4. The composition includes antioxidants that restore performance.
  5. Tests have shown that lubricants such as 5w 40 5w-50 maintain their own performance thirty percent longer than others. Because of this, they do not need to be replaced frequently.

According to SAE, the decoding of this multigrade oil is as follows:

  • 5 - the minimum temperature limit is minus thirty degrees;
  • 50 - the maximum temperature limit is forty-five degrees.

5w50 has a wide range of applications. For example, it is great for both passenger cars and trucks. Operating conditions vary. When driving around the city or in the mountains, in hot and cold weather, this lubricant protects the engine well. The technical indicators of a car oil are usually written on its capacity.

Comparison with other oils

10w60

Not everyone knows how 5w 50 oil differs, for example, from 10w 60. To answer this question, you need to decipher the SAE 10w60 marking. "10" means that the freezing point is minus twenty-five degrees. “60” means that the maximum temperature limit is plus fifty-five degrees. Obviously, 10w60 is perfect for racing cars where the engine gets very hot. Compared to the 5w 50, the 10w60 is less suitable for winter conditions. In summer, it doesn't make much difference what to pour, unless you are, of course, a racer.

5w40

5w40 differs from 5w50 in that it is less suitable for use in particularly hot conditions, for example, in the south. The difference is that it is recommended to pour the "forty" if it is not hotter outside plus thirty-five degrees.

0w40

If we compare 0w40 with 5w 50 and decipher the SAE markings, the following difference becomes visible: the pour point value for the first oil is minus thirty-five degrees. This means that it is ideal for regions with very cold winters, such as the Far North.

5w30

5w30 oil is considered one of the most common lubricants used in Russian regions with moderate climatic conditions. However, if you live where the temperature is far from normal, it is better to pour a 5w50 into the motor.

Many are also interested in whether it is possible to mix different lubricants. This is not recommended unless otherwise specified in the operating manual. If you mix motor oils with completely different compositions and characteristics, this can lead to rapid engine wear. Therefore, it is better not to risk it and use only one oil.

Conclusion

The correct functioning of the car depends on the actions of the owner. If a high-quality oil product is poured into the motor, there is no doubt in its uninterrupted operation. There is no need to try to save on such a consumable as oil, because it does not need to be changed too often. Repairing parts of the power unit and replacing them will subsequently cost much more than buying a high-quality oil fluid.

Auto oil 5w50 will protect the car engine for a long time. Sadly, it often happens that the purchased oil product turns out to be a fake, which is not able to properly lubricate all the engine parts. To prevent this from happening, you need to buy oil only from reliable sellers.

Not all motorists realize that during the operation of the engine, oxidation products, carbon deposits, as well as deposits in the form of fine metal chips begin to gradually accumulate in it. If nothing is done, friction between important components of the unit will increase, provoking their premature wear. Of course, against the background of such negative actions, the operation of the motor deteriorates. This can be prevented, if on time. The Mobil company pleasantly surprises with its product, presenting a wide range of motor oils in the retail network. Among them, the Mobile 5W50 stands out. He is especially welcomed by car owners of vehicles, who had to overcome a large number of kilometers during the entire period of operation.

Mobil 5W50 engine oil is a synthetic product.

Description of engine oil

Mobile 5W50 is a product made on a synthetic basis with the addition of special additives characterized by excellent cleaning qualities, which is very much in need of old cars. successfully compete with mineral counterparts, since even at low temperatures they manage to provide excellent operation of the car engine. By the way, I would like to note the efforts of the manufacturer of this motor oil in relation to retaining the client audience. The production process of motor oils is being systematically improved, at the moment a product is already being produced that fully complies with world quality standards.

Features of Mobil 5W50 engine oil

Mobil 5W motor fluid is endowed with characteristics that allow cleaning the components of the unit from harmful deposits, lubricating them, reducing friction, but at the same time it significantly reduces the harmful effects of low-quality fuel, acting as a “guardian angel” for the engine. As a result, it is possible to successfully prevent engine wear, ensuring a long service life. However, this is not the only distinguishing characteristic of Mobil 5W, you should pay attention to other properties:

  • the viscosity of the motor fluid remains throughout the entire shelf life, unless the car owner himself mixes it with antifreeze;
  • the oil evaporates very slowly, so it is rightfully considered surprisingly economical;
  • motor fluid is conducive to saving fuel resources;
  • the product possesses good low-temperature properties, successfully withstands temperature extremes, unexpected overloads.

If you bought a large canister of such oil, poured it into the engine, but it turned out that after that there was still a sufficient amount of product left, do not worry. The manufacturer guarantees that such a product is stored for a long time without losing its quality characteristics. Specifically, Mobil 5W50 has a shelf life of 5 years. During this time, you will have time to use it again.

Application area

The manufacturer recommends using it for passenger car engines. However, in this case, it is worth listening to a special recommendation: use it if the car has a high mileage. Such a motor fluid can be poured into the engines of domestic cars. It is suitable for most vehicles of European brands, so, if desired, each car owner can purchase it for his car.

Specifications

It is not difficult to understand the technical characteristics of the Mobile 1 5W50 if you pay attention to the marking itself in the name. The number "50" tells us what this is for engines in summer. At the same time, the 5W indicator indicates the possibility of using engine oil also in winter.

Other engine oil parameters are also impressive. In particular, the kinematic viscosity at 40 ° C Mobile 5W50 has an ASTM D445 value of 103 cSt, but at 100 ° C this figure is only 17 cSt.

Based on this, we can conclude that such an indicator of kinematic viscosity provides comfortable work at any time of the year. Experienced motorists call this product an all-season product. Thanks to such an excellent characteristic, the need to replace MM before the onset of cold weather, as well as with the arrival of summer, is eliminated. By the way, the manufacturer pays attention to the safety of using oil for human health, if you study the recommendations and then strictly follow them.

Decoding of marking

Anyone who recently bought a car may wonder what the numbers and letters on the canister mean. This combination of letters and numbers was not just invented to make the name of the product stand out in a special way. Each number and letter of the marking has its own interpretation, which will be useful for everyone to understand. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the information that deciphers the marking of Mobil 1 FS x1 5W50 engine oil.

Pay attention to the number "5" in the combination 5W50. It indicates at which temperature conditions freezing of particles of a chemical product is excluded. In particular, if you see the number "5", it means that you can operate the car in winter even at a temperature of -30 °. Unfortunately, if the mercury column drops even further, you better give up the idea of driving a car, since the oil will not be able to spread through the engine channels, and accordingly, the car will not work. The number "5" is followed by the letter "W", it indicates that such an oil product is an all-season and can be used both in summer and in winter.

Finally, let's figure out what the last number indicates. The number "50" indicates what extreme temperature the lubricant can withstand. If the temperature rises, the oil will lose its quality characteristics.

Tolerances and specifications

As noted above, the manufacturer was able to improve the quality of the oil fluid due to special additives and additives. However, some motorists are interested in the existing tolerances and specifications of Mobil 5W50 engine oil. We will list them:

  • VW 501 01/505 00;
  • API SN / SM / SL / SJ / CF;
  • SAE 5W-50;
  • ACEA A3 / B3, A3 / B4;
  • MB 229.3;
  • MB 229.1;
  • AVTOVAZ;
  • PORSCHE A40;
  • Lexus LFA Service Fill;
  • AAE B6.

Advantages and disadvantages

Mobile 5W50 is a synthetic oil that has several advantages, thanks to which it successfully competes with mineral and semi-synthetic counterparts. In particular, it is easy to see the following benefits:

  • excellent lubricating properties (the product forms an oil film, due to which friction is reduced, preventing rapid wear of the components of the unit);
  • excellent cleaning properties (thanks to special additives, the oil liquid provides cleaning of the engine from harmful deposits);
  • a high level of efficiency (the manufacturer guarantees economical consumption of not only the engine oil itself, but also fuel);
  • excellent resistance to temperature changes (the vehicle will work equally well at low and high temperatures).

But we are clearly at a loss to list the shortcomings of such a product, since there are definitely no obvious ones. We will not deny that some car owners express negative reviews after using such oil. However, such dissatisfaction is more due not to the fact that the product has poor characteristics, but to the fact that it simply did not fit a particular car.

How to distinguish a fake

Unfortunately, in modern realities, some swindlers seek to make money by offering the consumer a low-quality product. Since Mobile 5W50 is accompanied by increased popularity, a fake can be purchased on the market. Of course, with such an acquisition, high-quality engine performance cannot be expected. Knowing this, many car owners are afraid to make mistakes. We recommend that you look at some of the details to help you get a quality Mobil 1 FS x1 5W 50 engine oil.

First of all, pay attention to the surface of the box. It should be flawless, with smooth edges. All letters, inscriptions on it must be clear. Do not enter on sellers' assurances that the letters "floated" due to sudden getting wet or other unexpected circumstances. Even if this is so, it is better to contact another seller anyway and purchase a product that you will have no doubt about.

Move your gaze to the lid, it is important that the gap is minimal, and the spout stretches out when you open it. In this case, you can be sure that you have purchased the original product. Another characteristic may indicate a fake. Unfortunately, the store will not allow you to open the can before you pay at the checkout. However, once purchased, inhale the smell of the oil. The original is odorless, or it will be soft. A fake, on the contrary, will have an extremely pungent and unpleasant odor.

We recommend that you purchase engine oil from trusted suppliers, in car dealerships that value their reputation. In this case, you will be able to buy a quality product that will ensure the correct operation of your car's engine.

Mobil 5w50 motor oil belongs to the group of synthetic oils produced under the Mobil 1 brand name.

Mobil 1 has a proven track record among consumers. According to the results of sales for 2015 and 9 months of 2016, the oil of this brand has won a leading position in terms of sales. Mobile also provides good engine performance before the first overhaul.

On lettered cars, the total mileage to the engine bulkhead exceeds the 500,000 km mark. Also, this manufacturer has proven itself well in the market for transmission and industrial oils, where it is also included in the top ten.

Oil packaging

There is Mobil 5w 50 oil on the market, packaged in gray plastic cans with a capacity of 4 and 1 liter. For the convenience of servicing large car parks, there is packaging in 20 l plastic drums and 208 l iron drums.

Reading the label

The full synthetics in question are mainly used for gasoline engines with increased technical data. According to ExxonMobil, this grease can be used for filling in diesel engines. The possibility of such an application is indicated by the API CF marking indicated on the product label.

According to the ACEA standard, the fluid is intended for use in uprated engines with high mechanical stress and operating under severe operating conditions. The European mark indicates the suitability of this type of lubricant for direct injection diesel engines, including light truck applications.

According to the decoding of the APi coding, the petrochemical product can be used on cars manufactured after 1996 and has increased protection against oxidation.

All standards, except SAE, indicate that the oil is applicable for engine operation with extended drain intervals.

SAE Mobil 1 5w50 ratings indicate optimum engine starting temperatures. The temperature of the outside air, which ensures the optimum lubricating properties of the oil, at the start is in the range from -30 to + 50C.

The technical meaning of such a limitation of the operating mode indicates that at the minimum winter temperature, the oil viscosity is sufficient to crank the engine with a standard starter, a standard battery specified in the vehicle specification.

At a maximum summer air temperature of + 50C, the condition is ensured that the oil film does not drain from the surface of the mating parts and retains its protective properties of the rubbing pair.

Description of the oil. specified in the quality certificate indicates that this product complies with GOST R 51634-2000. For technical personnel of the old school, the designation 5w50 corresponds to GOST M-3z / 20E 1 E 2. In fact, if the labeling is correlated with the old GOST, then this technical fluid has the maximum possible all-season use based on the requirements in force until 2003.

Applicability

Mobil1 5w50 is designed for year-round use in all automotive engines. Increased summer lubrication characteristics ensure reliable operation of car engines at temperatures up to + 50C.

Do not forget that when parking in the open air on a sunny summer day at an air temperature of + 35C, the temperature in the engine compartment can easily reach + 50C. Therefore, this type of liquid lubricant is indispensable when using the tactics of changing the oil by mileage when operating a car in the southern regions of the country.

However, it is also indispensable when used for filling in the engine of a vehicle fleet operating in excess of the rated commercial load of a car, or for vehicles that are often in traffic jams.

Modern cars are equipped with fuel economy systems that turn off the internal combustion engine when stopping at a traffic light and then start when you press the gas pedal. When stopped for a long time under plug conditions, oil that has reached operating temperature can drain into the crankcase. This happens when parked for more than 10 minutes. The technical characteristics specified in the 5w50 colline are capable of ensuring safe engine start.

Mobil1 5w50 and 15w 40 engine oil is approved for filling on conveyors of Mersedez Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche, Lexus and BMW.

As you know, motor fluid is designed to lubricate engine parts, which means that its quality plays an important role in the functioning of the motor. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the choice of oil. Today we will tell you what Mobil 1 5w50 engine oil is, reviews of motorists who have used this fluid will also be provided at the end of the article.

Specifications

Motor oil (hereinafter - MM) Mobil 1 5W-50 is a fully synthetic fluid, which is manufactured using a patented technology of the Mobil company. This MM is a quality product, tested by time and by domestic motorists. Liquid marking 5W-50 is an all-season consumable, which means that it can be used both in summer and in the cold season.

By its performance characteristics, "Mobil" is in many ways superior to other consumables on a mineral and semi-synthetic basis. According to the manufacturer itself, MM is able to provide a reliable level of motor protection. This is largely possible due to the high properties of the temperature of the fluid and its viscosity, as a result of which the oil is quickly supplied to all lubrication points.

The quick intake of the engine fluid allows to provide good conditions for starting the engine in severe frost, and the temperature-viscosity properties, in general, comply with the SAE standard. It should also be noted that the oil guarantees reliable protection of engine parts from increased wear.

According to the manufacturer, the liquid is able to save gasoline, and the API SH category once again confirms this fact.

What are the advantages of using Mobil 5w50 synthetics in comparison with mineral and semi-synthetic fluids?

  • even when using the vehicle with long intervals of MM change, the performance of the fluid remains stable;
  • good low-temperature properties of MM, which makes it easy to start the engine and protect its parts and all components from increased wear, especially if the machine is used in cold climates;
  • when driving at high speeds, high-temperature characteristics allow protecting the motor even at maximum loads;
  • also liquid, can increase the operating time of not only a new, but also an old motor;
  • fuel economy compared to other fluids;
  • reduced consumption of MM - engine oil practically does not "go away";
  • note the safety of use: MM from "Mobil" do not have a negative impact on human health, if the necessary conditions for handling the liquid are observed;
  • ММ "Mobil 5w50" does not require specific precautions if the rules of personal hygiene are followed (in particular - washing clothes contaminated with ММ, washing the skin with soap and water).

Now we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics of MM:

  • according to the SAE standard, as mentioned above, the viscosity grade is 5W-50;
  • the kinematic viscosity index at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is 103 cSt;
  • the kinematic viscosity index at 100 degrees of engine operation is 17 cSt;
  • the viscosity index is 184;
  • the dynamic viscosity index at 150 degrees and at high shear rate is 4.2;
  • MM will begin to solidify at temperatures of -54 degrees and below;
  • the liquid can ignite at an engine operating temperature of 240 degrees, but this is unlikely, since the coolant will boil earlier and the engine will not be able to work.

For which machines is it suitable?

In fact, MM "Mobil 5w50" is suitable for most vehicles found on domestic roads. In particular, the fluid is capable of providing a reliable level of protection for modern diesel and gasoline engines in:

  • passenger cars;
  • minibuses;
  • crossovers and SUVs.

The use of MM "Mobil" is advisable in those engines, the cars of which operate under conditions of increased severity. Also included are turbocharged engines.

Motor oil "Mobil 1 5w50" in liter and four liter packages

The manufacturer recommends using consumables for motors that operate at maximum speeds and with maximum loads. Here we are talking about cars whose gearboxes allow the inclusion of a sport mode. In other words, the MM from Mobil is suitable for most of the cars available today. The fluid is recommended for use in cars by the following manufacturers:

  • Audi;
  • Mercedes-Benz;
  • Porsche;
  • Skoda;
  • Volkswagen.

Reviews

What can tell about the quality of consumables better than the reviews of motorists? Therefore, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with them.

PositiveNegative
I poured Mobil engine oil, drove about 8 thousand on it. By the way, I changed it before winter, so I was able to appreciate all the advantages in conditions of heavy use. Firstly, the liquid from the engine does not go anywhere, for the whole time it has topped up about 200 grams. Secondly, even in severe frosts, the car started up very easily and naturally, I was even surprised. I always had problems with starting on a cold one, I had to add additives, but everything is clear here. Recommend!I don’t know why it’s like that for me - despite the manufacturer’s comments that the oil doesn’t go away, after replacing I had to top up about one and a half liters. I changed the engine oil, drove about a thousand kilometers, decided to check the level. I determined by the probe that it was at a minimum. In general, for 10 thousand km of run I had to top up a lot (there are no leaks), and the oil is not cheap, I had to buy a liter bottle. I put "minus".
I decided to change the oil, I have a Mitsubishi Outlander. I arrived at the store, thought that it is better not to save money and take something of high quality. The seller recommended Shell at first, but I used it and, frankly, I was not satisfied with everything. So I took "Mobil". There are no complaints, I am completely satisfied with the purchase.I have been advised to refill Mobil 5w50 many times. I have never been led to this, and then suddenly decided to try. And it’s in vain, I’ll tell you so. Not only does it go to some unknown place, well, to waste, I guess. It also has a strange color when replaced. In general - I do not trust and do not advise.
I pour exclusively "Mobil" into my car (Toyota Camry). Already five times I changed the liquid, and I always fill in the same one. Once I realized that it is perfect for my car and now I'm not going to experiment. There are no problems either in summer or in winter, so I recommend not to spare money and buy a high-quality "consumable". Moreover, it fully justifies itself - European quality, and not the counterfeit that we are used to pouring in our basements and passing off as the original.Filled it, drove several thousand km, had to top up. And for this, buy another bottle. Very expensive oil, this price does not justify itself. Moreover, it is no better than our "consumables". I can't say anything good.
A specialist at the service station discouraged me from pouring this oil. He says that there is no need to overpay money, and the effect from it is the same as from Lukoil. Yeah, only Lukoil “leaves” all the time, but there are no such problems with Mobil. I think so - it is better to overpay a little once than to face expensive repairs later. I completely trust the oil.

Judging by the reviews of motorists, MM is a high-quality consumable. In particular, this is due to the original technology for the production of liquid. In case of handicraft manufacturing, a fake, of course, will not be able to ensure the full performance of all the necessary functions that a high-quality MM should perform. Hence the negative reviews.

The modern market is replete with a variety of motor lubricants. One of their main indicators is low-temperature and high-temperature viscosity. Among the offered products there are fluids that are designated, according to the SAE classifier, as "5W50 oil". What do these numbers mean and what properties do they impart to the oil mixture.

How motor oils are made

Any engine oil consists of two main components - a base composition and a whole set of additives designed to improve its performance. The main qualities of a particular lubricant directly depend on its base base. Modern production technologies make it possible to obtain 4 types of base oils:

  • mineral;
  • semi-synthetic;
  • 100% synthetic;
  • NS-synthetics, or hydrocracking.

Mineral oil (lubricant) is obtained from crude oil. Moreover, the mineral liquid itself is a raw material for the production of HC-synthetics. A true Full Synthetic base lubricant is synthesized from polyalphaolefins (PAO) found in petroleum-associated gases such as ethylene and butylene.

All this work is done in refineries (refineries). Semi-synthetic engine oil (Semi Synthetic) is based on 60-80% mineral matter. The remaining 20–40% is reserved for a synthetic base lubricant. PAO-synthetic mixes well with mineral liquid, giving the final product good characteristics at a low price.

HC-synthetics are gradually gaining the leading position from real synthetic oils. The level of purification from paraffins, sulfur, nitrogen, polycyclic and other harmful compounds, it is so high that the output is oil that is almost as good as 100% synthetics. True, its thermal oxidative stability is worse. This lubricant will have to be changed more often. All this pays off with a lower cost (30-40% cheaper).

Real synthetics are synthesized from light hydrocarbons that are part of gases (oils from PAO). An even higher quality base composition is made from esters of natural origin. To do this, use rapeseed, coconut or any other vegetable oil. This production technology is very expensive. Therefore, esters are only added to PAO-synthetics in the amount of 4–5%, thus obtaining fairly high-quality products.

Viscosity characteristics of oil mixtures

The viscosity of each lubricant is rated according to the SAE classifier created by the Society of Automotive Engineers of the USA. It is determined by the resistance of the liquid to its free flow - that is, the ability of different layers of oil to move relative to each other with a certain internal friction. The higher the level of this friction, the more viscous the fluid is considered. This indicator directly depends on the temperature.

Engine oil works in difficult temperature conditions, cooling down to low negative temperatures, down to -35 ° С, and warming up inside the engine to + 100 ° С and above. Experiencing such temperature fluctuations, the lubricant must maintain a constant level of viscosity, otherwise it will lose all its qualities that are so necessary for the engine. That is why, according to the SAE method, two viscosity components are determined - low-temperature (winter) and high-temperature (summer). In severe frosts, the winter viscosity must ensure good cranking of the engine, otherwise it simply will not start. In addition, without good fluidity, the lubricant will not be able to pump through narrow channels to the engine parts. As a result, it will run dry, which can lead to jamming and subsequent overhaul.

With a winter fluidity level of 5, the 5W-50 oil formulation will help you start the engine easily at -30 ° C. There are six such levels in total: 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W. The larger the number, the worse the indicator. For example, 25W can only be used down to -10 ° C, in colder weather it thickens and no longer works.

There are only five "summer" indicators: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. The higher the indicator, the more viscous the lubricating fluid will be at high temperatures inside a running engine. Oils with a "summer" fluidity of 20, 30, 40, when heated to 110–115 ° C, liquefy to such a state that they cannot form a protective oil film. And all-weather grease 5W50 does not lose its working qualities up to + 150 ° С.

Where is the oil composition 5W50 used?

This engine oil is used for power units operating in difficult conditions, for example, with a sporty driving style.

In auto racing, the motors run at full speed, generating a tremendous amount of heat. Only lubricating mixtures with "summer" viscosity at levels 50 and 60 can withstand such modes. Then you don't have to worry about how long the engine will last - the main thing is to get to the finish line first.

Since an oil composition with such a viscosity characteristic creates a strong and dense protective film, it is advisable to use it in worn-out engines that have already traveled 150 thousand kilometers or more. If for new motors that have driven less than 100 thousand, low-viscosity lubricants are used, for example 5W30, then after the 100 thousandth milestone it is worth switching to 5W40, and after 150 thousand - to 5W50.

This is due to the fact that the gaps between the parts increase all the time during wear. A low-viscosity lubricant can no longer form a strong film without tearing. In addition, a seal is not created between the piston rings and the cylinder walls. The engine wears out more, the compression in the cylinder-piston group drops, the oil liquid begins to penetrate into the combustion chambers and burn out there along with the fuel mixture. If you use a lubricant with a higher viscosity, these phenomena will decrease or disappear altogether.

Mobil 1 Peak Life 5W-50

A fully synthetic lubricant specially formulated for use in worn out engines, produced using our proprietary SuperSyn technology. Recommended for motors that have run more than a hundred thousand kilometers. The main emphasis is placed on slowing down the formation of slags, sludge and high-temperature varnish deposits, as well as maximum cleaning from these harmful components.

The engine oil contains powerful antiwear additives that slow down engine aging, practically does not fade. Antioxidant additives allow the lubricant to operate at extended drain intervals. In addition, the product can be used in power units experiencing heavy loads. The American API standard has defined its classes as SJ / SL / SM / CF. European ACEA classified as A3 / B3, A3 / B4. Has approvals from Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen.

Motul Sport 5W50

This engine oil is based on an ester-based formula. This solution makes it possible for the protective film to maintain its stability at the highest temperature loads. The grease maintains its stated fluidity level under all operating conditions. It has good oxidation protection provided by effective additives. The viscosity index, which reaches a high level (186), allows maintaining stable viscosity indicators in the widest temperature range. It can be used in diesel and gasoline engines, including injection, turbocharged, and multivalve. According to API, the grease is assigned the SM / CF category.

Conclusion

We have given only 2 examples of 5W50 engine oils. In fact, there are many more of them. So, Exxon Mobil Corporation produces another version - Mobil 1 Rally Formula 5W50 for sports driving. Similar products can be found from such well-known manufacturers as Aral (Megatronic 5W50), Elf (Excellum 5W50), Addinol (Super Visco MV0556 5W50), as well as many others. Before using these products, you should find out if the use of oils with such characteristics is allowed for your car. The necessary information can be found in the service books enclosed with each vehicle.
