Winter rubber spikes or velcro what to choose. Winter velcro tires or studded - what to choose? Options with increased patency

the main / Driving

With the fact that the unsuccessful tires are also called them with velcro (this word reflects the nature of the tire work) - on ice they can show themselves better than rose, I happened to face ten years ago in Finland. Representatives of the company TURVANASTA, dealing with the development and manufacture of spikes, decided to prove that studded tires (then it was Nokian HakkaPeliitta 1) more efficiently untouched by Nokian RSIs recently appeared on the market. For this, they even organized the demonstration performances of the two equal "Volkswagen-Passat", shown in the appropriate tires. Winter was not a joke: on the appointed day the temperature fell below -45 ° C. What was the overall surprise when the car on rubber without spikes turned out to be on average 15-17% faster than a fellow rose! Experts were justified: the delicate ice of the harder concrete and the spikes simply cannot pierce it; Rubber in the studded tires is tougher and in a strong cold drying so that it stops producing spikes in the contact zone with the road. And Velcro, they say, made of softer composition ...

Frost and sun

In his tests held for more than a dozen winters (and the winter, naturally, there were different - from the 30th frost to thaw), we periodically encountered this phenomenon. To give, finally, a clear answer to the question, whether the velcro can slow down the ice on ice and if so, under what conditions, we conducted this study.

Of course, we were interested in the opinion of specialists from various companies, but received rather cautious answers. Engineers Continental and Michelin, for example, argue that the temperature of the "equality" of studded and untapped tires - 15o frost. If warmer, on the ice more efficient spikes, colder - velcro. At the same time, ice condition and ... weather. The rough ice helps velcro, which cling to microns, and on a glossy surface will be more successfully cope with the task of spikes - it is obvious and does not require explanation. But the bright sun even in the frost can be slightly fueling the ice and make it more slippery, first of all for the lipuchk. Therefore, on the bright sun and clean ice, the spikes may be better even at -20-25 ° C.

During the temperature test of summer tires (SP, 2008, No. 8), we have acquired some experience of such comparisons (by the way, the leading tire companies are very interested in our results). Now let's try to determine the effectiveness of silence and lipukets on the ice at different temperatures. EXAMPLE FROM LIFE - Rained section of the road in front of the stop line ...

Tests took place in February - March 2008. They participated in them 195 / 65R15 and velcro slightly greater dimension - 205/55R16. A little distinction on our main task does not affect.

In the group "Claws" we included Michelin X-Ice North, known for high stability of spikes, and Continental Contiwinterviking 2 - His spikes are wider. The opponents were picked up from new products, first of all promises not to be afraid of water on the ice. This is Nokian Hakkapeliitta R, Michelin X-Ice 2 and Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60.

We will work on the Skoda-Octavia car, to slow down from a speed of 50 to 5 km / h to eliminate the errors in the work of ABS (short-term blocking of the wheels) at low speed.

In order to influence the condition of the ice, only the air temperature was influenced, the measurements were carried out in cloudy weather or after sunset, able to quickly fill ice.

Temperature field

It turned out that the "point of equilibrium" of the hips and lipukets is smeared in the range of 13-15O frost, therefore these results and we take for the basic.

With a frost, about 20 o Velcro won near the hips almost 20% of the braking path! The results obtained allowed to conclude: the lower the temperature, the greater the difference in favor of lipuchki. Explanation Simple: As already noted, with a decrease in temperature, the force required to puncture the ice spike is growing. In addition, the cold ice is more rough, and the velcro is on hand.

Warming to -5 ° C gives the opposite effect: the spikes begin to search the brake path. And with a huge, almost 90%, the advantage! Water appearing between the ice and the tire works as a lubricant, and the velcro slide. At the same time, the softened ice allows you to run claws deeper, which means that the rose is hampered more efficiently.

The closer to zero, the greater the water in the stain of the contact. It interferes already and rose - the spikes are badly held in the softened ice, they tear it and lose efficiency. But not so threatening like velcro. It turns out that the seized tires are more versatile on slippery coatings.

It will be worthwhile to be a warning: on smooth ice, especially on a sunny day, and those and other tires inhibit worse even at a lower temperature.

Morozno

The best brake properties in the untocated "Mishalin": 30.3 m. The average braking path of the lipuchkoe is 31.3 m. In the "Conny" spikes, it slows down better than "Mishlen" by 5.5 m. With this frost, the advantage is still on the side of wider " Diamond "spikes. With a transfer of 6.1 m, or 19.5%, Velcro win!

COLD

The best "Connya" was the best, the worst ... Aged "Michelin". The difference between them was 6.7 m. Velcro, which took 33.2-35.2 m, are located awareness. The average value of the hips is 34.4 m, the lipuchku is 34.7 m. The difference is less than 1%. Under these conditions, the velcro and sinks are almost the same.

Warming

Sipovka still reduces the braking path: "Michelin" by 5.8 m, "Continental" by 4.5 m. The average is 29.2 m. But the velcro suffer fiasco: their results are 52.1-56.5 m. "Michelin" comespaced with Bridgestone, and Nokian ahead. The average braking path on an untapped rubber is 54.9 m. Multi-way! In such conditions, rose is more effective than almost twice.

Almost zero

In such conditions, the hips, which increased the braking path on average for another 3.9 m. Even the "Connya" with their "Brousers" gives 3.2 m. Velcroe finally failed! "Nokian" slows down with a result of 77.1 m, "Mishalin" and "Bridgestone" roll over the mark of 80 m. The average value is 82.3 m. At such a temperature of the velcro on the ice unconditionally, almost two and a half times lose rose hips.

Choosing tires, take into account the climate of your region: harsh snowy winter, wheeling roads - preferably notched wheels; Soft winters, frequent thaws, replacing with ice, is better spikes.

FEEDBACK

We noticed that at first the subsequent braking of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R on the ice were better than previous ones, the results stabilized only to the sixth attempt. Supposed that such a change in characteristics is associated with the presence of special "containers", designed to remove water from the contact stain. At the entrance of the snowy road to the ice platform, snow hits them. As a result, the car is picked up on snow grains, and after several passes, the snow shakes out of tires and braking is already on clean ice.

Nokian Tyres specialists in their tests with such problems have not come across. But their tires were stored at the positive temperature (we have in a cold container), and they changed them in the warm box. Warm tires easily get rid of snow when the car goes on a snowy road to an ice area. It turns out that any car on these tires after a long parking on the frost will slow down worse until they warm up.

To get rid of this effect, the designers decided to make the inner surface of "pockets" smoothly so that the snow in them could not be delayed. For this, the elements of the molds that form the walls of "tanks" were carefully polished. The comparative tests are modernized and conventional tires withstand in the cold, and not warm. During the test, the difference in the brake distance in several meters was recorded - of course, in favor of modernized.

Thus, not only our assumptions were confirmed, but also the effectiveness of the modernization. From the end of April 2008, all tires of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R and Hakkapeliitta R SUV move away from the conveyor with smooth walls "Pockets". It's nice that this is the merit of the journal "driving."

TV channel "360" found out what kind of winter tires is suitable for the roads of your region.

Temperature The last couple of nights tends to zero, and therefore it's time to think about replacing summer rubber on the winter. Car enthusiasts before the traditional choice - spikes or "velcro"? Some say, the metal in the tire is more reliable, especially for iced roads, others insist that only a special protector will save during wet snow. The TV channel "360" learned that for Russian winter is safer.

What depends the choice of rubber

When choosing rubber, you need to navigate several factors for your car: the climatic conditions in which you most often drive, your driving style, the condition of the road, as well as the operation mode of public utilities.

Pros and cons of studded rubber

First of all, the spikes are needed by those who often drive on unquident roads from snow, for example, lives outside the city, where utility technique is a rare guest, but icing descents and lifts - a common phenomenon. Spikes in such conditions give the minimum brake path and good maneuverability. However, wet or dry road crosses all these advantages, and gives the opposite effect. On the bare asphalt on the thorns of a bad grip with an expensive and they simply slide.

Principle "Velcro"

Every year the popularity of unwanted rubber is growing - the so-called "velcro". Such tires have a complex pattern of the tread, it acts as a tap water system. Wet snow does not stick on the wheels, and through the channels goes to the sides. The special composition of rubber allows it to not lose elasticity at low temperatures, due to which the tire literally lipates to the calculated asphalt.

European or Scandinavian - what is better for Russia

Winter tires without spikes is divided into European and Scandinavian classes, they are also called Alpine and Nordic. Scandinavianrubber is offered as a spike alternative, only more comfortable. With raw weather, this velcro is unsuitable - the car is exactly floating, but when ice and deep snow is the perfect option.

European Inspected tires are focused on ride on wet snow and slush. Even with loose snow with European Velcro, driving the car will be difficult. It will increase the brake path, the car will be stopped.

Did not disobey the car - pay the penalty

Currently, the seasonal change of rubber is a recommendatory nature, but many motorists are convinced that penalties in this case - the measure is necessary.

"We have a lot of clever: go in winter on summer tires, thereby provoke an accident on the roads. The car during snow on summer rubber becomes unmanageable. For such a thing to be fined, as, for example, for unassembled belts, "Armen Oganesyan is confident, the chairman of the public organization" Motorists ".

Used Rubber: Security Parameters

Any of the three options for winter rubber is an expensive purchase. And many car owners in order to save, b / y tires, for example, after one season. In the ads about these are written that the tires are "almost new", but do not believe the word, measure the ruler. The permissible maximum of the tread worn is 4 mm. And in the studded tires, check the presence of the spikes themselves, they have the property fall.

Anna Shcherbak

And in Japan, he led to the emergence of a new type of tires - friction rubber, which, thanks to the acute tongue of our motorists, became known as Velcro. Now, in addition to the traditional choice between studded and classic winter tires, a question was added: "What is better: Velcro or spikes?"

To answer as soon as possible to the question about what to give priority, spiked or velcro, you need to know the features of the other type of tires. Since there is nothing perfect in our world, then each type of tire has its indisputable advantages and its weaknesses. To understand that better, spikes or velcro, we will try to disassemble both types of rubber in detail. So, in order.

Sophisticated tires

The spikes in many regions of Russia have become an integral part of winter equipment. However, spiked spikes. Conventional metal elements are inserted into the cavity of the tire with such a calculation in order to perform several millimeters of spikes above the surface. This is a kind of engaging element that provides a steady movement in the icing road. The disadvantage of traditional eyeproof tires is considered a loss of almost 15% of spikes by mid-winter. Metal elements do not withstand motion on asphalt. If it is already here to compare, which is better - velcro or spikes, the advantage will be clearly not towards the latter.

A newer invention - thorough hooks "bear claw". In its design, engaging elements are similar to claws of the animal. Clawed spikes ensure the safety and stability of the machine during acceleration and braking. When moving in a clean dry coating, clawing spikes "are removed" into the body of the tire, like the quality and velcro is already in terms of quality and velcro occupy one position.

Friction tires

In essence, friction tires are a modified and improved type of classical winter rubber. Designers finalized the relief of the tread. On friction tires, the protector has a complex drawing in the form of deep winding lamellae. Thanks to this figure, the protector takes water from the point of contact with the tire with the road bladed, and the tire seems to be scented to asphalt. Hence the name - "Velcro".

If we evaluate what is better: Velcro or spikes, then in terms of acceleration and braking on wet and dry asphalt, friction tires are noticeably surpassed. Another advantage of the lipuchkoe is noiselessness. Metal engaging elements whatever they are in design, make a rather strong noise when moving in pure asphalt.

However, the velcro is inferior to spikes when moving on clean ice. No matter how much the tire is not "squeezed" to a clean or wet roadway, it cannot provide a proper level of security on an icing road, especially if the tracks are covered with rough ice.

What is better: Velcro or spikes?

By bringing the total to the foregoing, it can be said with confidence that if it is assumed to operate the car only in urban environments or is to travel abroad to the Russian Federation to the EU country, then in this case, friction tires are undoubtedly preferable.

If frequent departures are planned for the city, where snow removal machines are not found throughout the winter period, then there are no alternatives to the stamped tires. We will have to come to humble and noise when driving, and with high wear of pricked rubber, but the safety in this case is more important. It is better not to risk.

Thus, it is decided to solve - winter tires: spikes or velcro, you have to do.

According to surveys, more than half of Russian motorists prefer to use studded rubber in winter. Another quarter uses velcro. The rest or go on all-season, or do not pay special attention to the tires and rich on what will have.

Any tires have their advantages and cons, which in a particular situation may be crucial, or not at all affect the comfort and safety of driving. Road conditions, quality of the route, its loading, climate, strongly affect the choice of tires. Masives the type of drive. Find out that it is better for the front-wheel drive, spikes or velcro, will help the analysis of the advantages and cons of these types of rubber.

Pros and cons of studded rubber on the front-wheel drive car

In the front-wheel drive car, the presenter is always under the same load generated by the motor, transmission, other equipment. This factor contributes to the best manifestation of both the advantages, and the minuses of studded wheels.

Pluses of Shipov

  • Head with asphalt in ice. On a flat road covered with ice cake, spikes are grinding it, providing the best contact of rubber with a solid surface. Thanks to a steadily loaded axis, this effect is enhanced on the front drive.
  • Reducing the brake path on slippery surface. I bite into the ice or snow crust, the spikes have a sliding resistance, thereby reducing time until the time stops.
  • Manageability in turns. On a car with front-wheel drive, you can set gas under the hint of a skidding, thereby withdrawing it from a dangerous situation. Spikes Even when slipping protrudes as an abrasive element, destroying a smooth ice surface.

Minuses of Shipov

  • Noise. When driving through a smooth solid surface spikes create extra noise. In addition to the fact that it can unwind, the sound is capable of masking other noises, thereby preventing the timely identification of some problems.
  • Asphalt kills a rose. When driving on a highway cleaned from snow and ice with reagents and natural factors (melting, evaporation), the hips are very cozy and flakes faster. The spikes fly out, they are lost, thereby making the tires of their initial advantages.
  • Increase the brake path on the dry track. When moving along a clean smooth road, solid spikes reduce the power of the hook. Therefore, on a good road without snow and ice, the car on spikes slows down worse.
  • Spikes are useless on thick snow.On an unscrupulous snow-covered road, there is practically no sense of spikes, as they cannot cling to solid coating. The car is sinking, raking snow, the protector is "closed", the gripping wheel will deteriorate, as well as immaculated.

Pluses and cons of tire-lipukek on the front drive

Velcroes are now fundamentally different from the hammering only the lack of these very spikes. Sometimes a similar pattern have wheels of different types (spike and velcro), so that some uniqueness of the tread lipuchkoe is now impossible.

Pluses of lipuchkin

  • The hook on the purified asphalt. On a clean flat road, Velcro contact the coated as possible, as if sticking to him, for which they received their nickname. In urban environments, such tires behave in winter like summer tires in the warm season.
  • Life time.In the city, on the calculated asphalt, the velcro tires are less wear out, since they do not have solid elements in the face of spikes, in addition to the tendency to loss, also destroying rubber at the landing site.
  • Behavior on wet snow. Moving on the wet in the snow of a small thickness, the velcro puzzles the way, creating an inscription of his tread on it. On the front drive, this effect is enhanced by constant load on the wheels.
  • Silent. There are no spikes - no noise made by them on solid surfaces. Driving comfort is compared with such on summer tires.

Cons of Lipuchkin

  • Ice behavior. The road covered with ice crust is easily "lost", the hook disappears, since the wheels lack solid enhancements that improve with ice contact. In the high-speed drift, Pogazazka may not help: the wheels will rotate, and the car will continue to go sideways, as there is nothing to cling to the ice.
  • Brake path on snow and ice. Rubber-Velcro during braking is inclined to slide, go through, the absence of additional friction points in the form of spikes increases the braking path.
  • The worst start on a slippery road.Tootting from the place on the slippery surface, the risk that the wheels without spikes will go into slip, above. Velcro simply nothing to grind the ice layer to sprinkle it to the asphalt.

After analyzing the pros and cons, it can be concluded that on the front-wheel drive car rubber with spikes better behaves on a snow-covered and ice-covered road. On a clean track, even primes, more advantages manifests itself in lipuchk.

The spikes are needed in the conditions of the northern regions, as well as when driving around country and little loaded tracks, which are not often clean in a timely manner. In the metropolis, where the roads are quickly clearing and water with reagents, the need for spikes is minimal. The same applies to lively long-distance trails, where snow and ice are almost never delayed.

Modern systems of control and safety, like ABS, stabilization, protection against driving, allow you to use the car on the front drive in the city with comfort, going around without spikes. They become useless, and sometimes harmful. That is why (and not due to the accelerated wear of asphalt) in some EU countries, rubber on spikes is prohibited.

As they say: Prepare Sani in the summer, and the cart is in winter. This folk wisdom fully complies with today's realities in the preparation of the car to operate in the most difficult period - winter.

To buy in the summer when prices for it are not yet due to a seasonal increase. So

As soon as the car owners have a choice appeared, this question arises every time. Although there is a small proportion of reckless drivers who do not change the rubber depending on the season and continue to ride on both in winter, not having a question: what kind of winter tires is better. However, already with small negative temperatures of the car on summer wheels at times more than that of similar, but with winter tires. This is proven repeated crash tests. You can not save on your safety, as well as in the life and health of others.

Winter tires there are two types: immaculated and studded.

So what kind of winter tires is better: studded or velcro, that is, awakened?

Manufacturers of rubber were carried out operational tests. At temperatures below minus 20 degrees, oddly enough, in short, the braking paths showed the unwanted tires. Just at such low temperatures, the spikes simply did not have time to break through the ice and cling. However, at temperatures from minus 10 to minus 15, the characteristics of both types of tires were approximately the same. Well, at temperatures of air close to zero, unambiguously, the studded tires won. Since at such temperatures, Velcro simply slipped on the imputying ice and snow, and the spikes gently bite into the ice and braked very well.

Thus, knowing what permanent winter temperatures in your region, you can already conclude: which rubber is better - velcro or spikes, just for you.

In addition, the operational qualities of winter tires strongly affects the quality of the rubber itself and, of course, the tread pattern. They are distinguished by two: Scandinavian (or Finnish) and European.

European drawing on winter tires is designed to operate rubber on winter European roads with rare snowlessness, at temperatures near zero. Therefore, such rubber is suitable for operation in the southern regions of our country, but not in the middle and central part of it.

The Scandinavian protector was developed specifically for the Northern European countries and takes into account the peculiarities of operation at low winter temperatures and big snowlessness, and ice formation conditions.

What kind of winter tires is better - it is still quite difficult to decide. Studded tires are quite noisy in operation. In addition, when driving within a large city, where the roads are constantly clean and treated with antigolide reagents, the asphalt is almost always clean in winter. And when driving on asphalt on studded tires - spikes are lost, rubber spars.

In addition, on the asphalt, the brake path is significantly longer than that of an untrocated winter rubber.

However, if you drive in the city or in the area where snow lies on the roads, it is better to prefer the studded rubber, which under the average winter temperatures in the snow and ice behaves more safely and more manageable than velcro.

Decide which temperatures in your area in winter, what quality of snow cleaning, how often you will go to country areas of roads or off-road, and then decide - which winter tires are better for your car.
