How does the fuel pump work?

the main / Engine

Let's first consider the basic device of the fuel tank. For security purposes, it is located on the opposite end of the car from the engine. Inside it is a float, which through the sensor transmits information on how much gasoline or diesel fuel remains in the tank. The tank also has a vent hole - usually a tube or a small hole in the tank tank cover to allow air to penetrate the reservoir when it is empty. Many new ventilation hole systems also have a carbon filter that does not allow fuel pairs to exit the tank, but the air allows you to enter the tank.

The fuel pump serves gasoline from the tank through the tube into the engine (more precisely, in the carburetor or injector). The fuel pump can be mechanical transmitted in motion by the engine; Either it can be electric, and in this case it is usually located near or more often inside the fuel tank. Mechanical fuel pumps in our time can be found more and less.

How the mechanical fuel pump works

The mechanical fuel pump is activated from the engine camshaft or by means of a special shaft, which in turn is driven from the crankshaft. At the time when one of these leading shafts rotates, the special cam passing under the lever through the eyeles is spinning around its axis and with a certain frequency presses one end of this lever. The other end of this lever is connected to the rubber membrane forming the floor in the pump chamber. When the lever rises at the expense of the cam on the other end, then it pulls the diaphragm, as a result of which absorption is created, which pumps fuel into the fuel line through a one-sided valve that does not allow to roll fuel when it is enough.

How does the electric fuel pump work?

The electrical pump has a similar membrane valve device, but, instead of obtaining a drive from a distribution or other shaft (that is, mechanical way), in this case, the diaphragm provides an electromagnetic switch. This electromagnetic switch pulls the iron rod, which, in turn, pulls the diaphragm, inlet gasoline into the chamber.

Most mechanical and electrical fuel pump systems work only when it is necessary to the engine. In a modern car, when you just get into your car and turn the key in the ignition lock to the "ON" position (in this position, the key remains when the engine is started), then the fuel pump starts its work - in some cars you can even hear a barely noticeable noise of the beginning his works.
