On the modification of the Tourer, a sports-type suspension was installed, with moving silent blocks of the lower arms. The brake calipers were tailored to the criteria for frequent and heavy braking, the ventilated discs were covered with screens. The X100 was equipped with a 1JZ-GTE engine, both standard and with a single ceramic ST-15 turbine. At the same time, the WT-i valve timing system was used, which stabilized the fuel consumption. All vehicles in the Tourer package were equipped with state-of-the-art xenon dipped beam headlights. Another feature of the Tourer was the 16-inch lightweight titanium alloy wheels. In addition, VSC and TRC traction control are standard on the vehicle.


In this generation, the main previous configurations were retained, a number of which starts from the XL and Raffine versions, moving to the more expensive Avante to the real sports versions with turbocharged engines Tourer S and Tourer V, where the latter is distinguished by an outstanding engine power - 280 hp. The Tourer V has different sizes of front and rear wheels, xenon headlights, foglights, rear spoiler, sports exhaust, automatic transmission with manual gearshift. The Tourer S models are equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. There was also sold a rather rare tuning modification called TRD SPORT, which also contributed to the maintenance and development of the sporty image of this model. In the top-end Avante G trim levels, as always, Chaser offers the maximum level of equipment with all the necessary attributes of expensive premium sedans.

In the model range of the sixth generation Toyota Chaser, the previous line of engines is used: these are the four that have replaced more than one generation and have gone through several upgrades: a gasoline 4S-FE with a capacity of 120 hp. and turbodiesel 2L-TE (97 hp). In-line petrol "six", ideal for the Mark II / Chaser / Cresta family, are represented by engines of 2, 2.5 and 3 liters. In this generation, the 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE engines were the first to receive a variable valve timing system, and after restyling in 1998, a two-liter 1G-FE also got it, and its power was increased to 160 hp. At the same time, the manufacturer abandoned the diesel engine. In the transmission, as before, the main priority was given to the "automatic", but for the most popular models it was possible to choose "mechanics" as an alternative, including the best representative of its class 1JZ-GTE with a capacity of 280 hp. Well, the permanent four-wheel drive is provided not only for 2.5-liter versions, as in the previous generation, but also in combination with a 2-liter engine, albeit exclusively with automatic transmission.

There were no global changes in the design of the chassis, except for further modernization work. Front and rear - double wishbone suspension for high comfort. It is worth noting the still good handling and at the same time sufficient carrying capacity without sacrificing driving performance. As in previous generations, the Tourer V modification has an upgraded sports suspension with floating upper arm bushings, a lower stiffener strut, and enlarged brake calipers.

In terms of security, Chaser has reached a completely new level, inaccessible to previous generations. Even in the basic configuration, the car acquired both front airbags, belts with tension force limiters, child seat mountings, and an ABS system (anti-lock braking system). After restyling, the Brake Assist system was added. Traction control, side airbags are options or standard on high-end trims, along with VSC.

The Chaser in the 100th body is an excellent representative of the mid-size sports-type sedans. Of the total supply on the market, a very small group is made up of models with engines standing at the extreme marks of the engine range - 1.8 and 3 liters. The real richness of the assortment, offering the maximum choice, falls on the popular versions with 2.5-liter power units, a large part of which are the most technically interesting modifications of the Tourer V.

It was planned that alloy wheels on AW vehicles of this modification would distinguish it from AW vehicles of other versions. The Chaser has always been considered the "brother" of a model such as the Mark II, which was popular as an AW family car until the first half of the 1990s.
