The list of regulated operations that must be performed for the efficient operation of the vehicle includes the replacement of the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism. This operation will be performed on any car service, but if you want to save, it is better to master it yourself. The article presents a step-by-step instruction, how the timing belt is replaced on the Volkswagen Passat B3 and B5, and the photo gallery and the corresponding video is attached.

When is it time to change?

Replacing the timing belt on the Volkswagen Passat B5 and B3 is performed according to the recommendations specified in the manual, through 60,000 - 90,000 km of run. But at the same time, it should be regularly monitoring its condition, as the belt break is possible. It may have severe consequences in the form of a bent valves and spoiled pistons, since when the breakage, they meet and damage to each other.

The strap of the gas distribution mechanism has the type of rubber rim with the inner surface in the form of teeth serving for better clutch. The decision on the need to replace the belt is accepted after visual inspection. The product is subject to mandatory replacement if the following defects are revealed:

  • cracks and scuffs on the surface;
  • the teeth are erased, are inwhams, have traces of wear;
  • the sidewalls are clouded;
  • the material is separated;
  • there are oil traces on both surfaces.

When inspection, attention should be paid to other RAC items, when identifying any shortcomings, they need to be changed. Together with the timing belt, it is desirable to change the tensioner.

Replacement process

Before changing the belt of the gas distribution mechanism on the Volkswagen Passat B5, B6 and B3, it is necessary to prepare a place to work. It is more convenient to replace on the observation ditch. The car needs to be installed on the handbrake.

Required tools

To work it is necessary to prepare the following tools:


Stages

  1. It turns off the power of the car by disconnecting the negative terminal.
  2. Next is dismantled by the air cleaner.
  3. Having raised the front of the car by the jack, you need to remove the right front wheel and restor.
  4. Then you need to remove the belts of the air conditioner and the generator. On the removed products you need to put the directions for which they rotated to establish similarly when installing.
  5. Taking the tensioner as much as possible with the help of a cape, you should weaken the tension. Then you need to insert the rod into the combined holes of the stretch and support rollers and remove.
  6. Next, we define two latches remove the upper part of the timing of the timing of timing.
  7. Then you need to put all the tags correctly. To do this, it is necessary to turn the crankshaft crankshaft mounting bolt along the clockwise movement, until the labels on the crankshaft pulleys and the timing cover, the grinding gear and the crankshaft pulley, on the head of the cylinder block and camshaft pulley, as well as on the handwheel of the crankshaft and the case.

Checking the timing champ chain / tensioner drive chain chain:

Remove the rubber plug (see ill. 2, red circle) in the bottom cover of the timing chain.
Turn the crankshaft in the direction of its usual rotation to the position of the upper dead point (see Ill.1, green arrows).
Using a mirror on the tensioner of the timing chain chain, calculate the number of locking protrusions on the timing tensioner plunger of the timing chain.

Check which version of the timing chain tensioner is set:
- Old version (see Fig. 3).
- New version (see Fig. 4).

Timing chain tensioner, new version:
If you can see more than 6 and grooves (see Fig. 6, pos. In, 4 grooves shown):
Replace the timing chain.

Check the performance of the timing chain tensioner, as indicated below:

Remove the bottom cover of the timing chain

- Check the bottom cover of the timing chain circuit for damage. If the bottom cover is damaged, replace the bottom cover of the timing chain circuit.

- press the timing chain tensioner with hand (see ill. 7, number 2) in the tensioner direction (see Ill. 7, number 1).

a. If the timing chain tensioner plunger can move the arm force inside the chain tensioner:
- The timing chain tensioner is faulty - to act further according to paragraph 1.

b. If the timing tensioner is the timing chain tensioner, even after several attempts with an arm force inside the chain tensioner, it is impossible to move:
- TRP drive chain tensioner normally - to act further according to paragraph 2.

1. The timing chain tensioner is faulty:

- Remove the GBC
- Check if the collision of valves and pistons occurred:
- If it is not detected on the pistons, valves, camshaft, the damage camshaft or bearings, it is necessary to replace the timing tensioner of the timing chain and the timing chain.
- If there has been the collision of valves and pistons, it is necessary to repair the engine.

Using the T10352 device and the key to 18 unscrew the camshaft valve.
The distribution valve has the left thread, twists with a 35nm force.

Remove the valve.

Remove the plotting of the camshafts.

We draw attention to the possible damage to the mesh filter and its location.

In this case, the grid was in the oil channel of the graduation tree.

Fix the tensioning roller and remove the belt drive units.

Remove the emerging turbine nozzle.

In order to unscrew the drive belt tensioner bolt, you will have to take the air conditioner compressor towards the compressor.

Tensioner

Remove the crankshaft pulley and the bottom cover of the chain drive.
Before parsing the chain drive, be sure to fix the block gear with a crankshaft bolt.

We remove the tensioner of the chain of the oil pump, the tensioner chain chain, tensioner shoe, chain, sedative.

Scroll the crankshaft before coincidence of the labels of the drive chain of balancing shafts. As practice shows, it is faster than removing the tensioner and set the tags.

Install a new chain and an updated chain tensioner.

Install a new plotting of camshafts

We establish the chain of the oil pump and the tensioner shoe, pre-fixing it with a stopper.

Press the crankshaft gland is better on the lid installed.

For fixing camshafts, stoppers are provided, they are not entirely convenient for use, and I use it extremely rare.

Further assembly is carried out in reverse sequence.

Calipers

Remove the top cover of the timing chain
Turn the crankshaft by holding it with a key on 24 for the damper of the steep oscillations in the direction of rotation to the position in which the strata-stalks will be almost at the same time.
Remove the cylinder ignition candle 1.

Screw the adapter for the hourly type indicator -T10170 / A- in the threaded hole of the spark plug.
Install the time-type indicator -Vas 6079, together with the extension -T10170A / 1- and secure the fixing nut.
Slowly rotate the crankshaft in the direction of rotation to the maximum deflection of the arrow. Upon reaching the maximum deflection of the piston installed in "VMT"
If the crankshaft turns on the label "nmt", turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine by two turns. Do not turn the crankshaft against the working direction of rotation!

Measure the distance from the left outer edge of the partition -A- to the label -b-on the camshaft of the inlet valves.
Nominal value: 61 ... 64 mm.

If the measured value corresponds to the nominal, measure the distance between the label -B-on the camshaft of the ink valves and the label -c-on the camshaft of the exhaust valve.
Nominal size: 124 ... 126 mm

The shift to one gear tooth leads to a deviation from the nominal value by about 6 mm. If this offset is detected, the chain should be reinstalled.

Remove the engine casing

The installation of the toothed belt can only be carried out with a cold engine, since the position of the tension roller label depends on the engine temperature

Remove the polyclinic belt.

Remove the tension element of the polycliner belt.

Remove the top of the cover of the toothed belt.

Remove the receiving pipe from an additional heater.

Unscrew the connecting bolt of the fluid supply tube (Fig. 1).

Remove the duplicate air tube between the charge air cooler and the turbocharger.

Carefully cover or close open ends.

Remove the vibrations / pulley damper.

Remove the bottom and middle part of the lid of the toothed belt.

Unscrew the fastenings of the fuel highways / tubes of the cooling system on the inlet tube.

Unscrew the cooling system expansion tank and set it aside (hoses remain connected).

Bring the crankshaft to the first cylinder NMT position.

The sliding application of oval gear gears of the crankshaft. When installing this gear gear to install the pistons in the VMT, use the crankshaft lock.

Rotate the crankshaft until the label on the crankshaft gear and gear sectors will not be at the top. Tags on the lid of the toothed belt and camshaft must match (Fig. 3).

A - Round gear, fixed with a crankshaft lock, NMT label - 12 hours.

C - oval gear, fixed using the crankshaft clamping label VMT - 1 h.

Lock the crankshaft gear using the crankshaft lock or the crankshaft lock. To do this, insert the crankshaft lock from the front side of the gear into its engagement.

The labels on the crankshaft gear and the crankshaft fixture should coincide. At the same time, the pin of the crankshaft lock must enter the hole of the sealing flange.

Install the engine support for the engine with supports and lift the engine in the mounting position as shown in Figure 4.

Remove the engine cushion / engine support fastening bolts and remove the engine pillow.

Remove the engine's pillow only if the engine is fixed using the Console Support

The engine support can be unscrewed only with a pillow of a power unit.

Make sure that when lifting and lowering the engine by supporting the console, there were no damaged, the components of the hoses are strongly stretched or torn off.

Little lift the engine using the console support so that you can unscrew and remove the two-top engine support bolts.

Lower the engine using the console support so that you can unscrew and remove the lower bolt.

Unscrew the fastening clamp of the air conditioning system circuit from the spar.

The engine support can be removed only with a non-shoot belt.

Mark the direction of the gear belt.

Out the fastening bolts of 1 and 2 camshaft gears until the camshaft gears are rotated in longitudinal grooves.

Fix the hubs using a lock pin (Fig. 5)

To do this, insert the locking pins through the free longitudinal grooves into the hole of the cylinder head.

Unscrew the tensioning roller fastening nut.

Then rotate the wrench counterclockwise until the tension roller of the toothed belt is not fixed using the retaining pin (Fig. 6).

The tension and loosening of the tension roller tension can be carried out using the key under the hexagon.

Then twist the wrench clockwise until you stop and pull the fastening nut of the hand.

Remove the engine support up.

Remove the toothed belt first from the pump cooling system, then from the other gears.

Installation

Fix the camshafts using a locking pin for pumps-nozzle.

The installation of the toothed belt is allowed only with a cold engine, since the position of the tension roller label depends on the engine temperature.

The tensioning roller must be fixed using a locking pin and on the right stop.

The crankshaft must be fixed using the crankshaft lock or the crankshaft lock.

Spin the camshaft gears in longitudinal groove clockwise until it stops.

Toothed belt put on the crankshaft gear, tensioning roller and camshaft gears and taps.

On the gear of the pump cooling system, the toothed belt is laid last.

Install the engine support from above and tighten the bottom mounting bolt.

Lift the motor using the console support so that you can see the tensioning roller arrow.

Unscrew the tension roller fastening nuts and remove the lock pin.

Watch for the correctness of the tensioning roller planting in the back of the gear belt cover (Fig. 7).

Then rotate the tensioning roller using a wrench in the direction of the arrow until the arrow will be in the middle of the gap of the support plate (Fig. 8) make sure that the mounting nuts do not rotate.

Fix the tensioning roller in this position and tighten the tensioning roller fastening nut, as indicated below, the torque of 20 minutes and trough it is 45 ° (1/8 turn).

When tightening the fastening nut, the arrow can turn Max. 5 mm to the right of the gap of the support plate. This position does not require adjustment, since the toothed belt will establish the right way during the operation

Install the counterproof, as shown in Figure 9.

Fix the hub (a) from rotation in the direction of the engine shaft using the lock pin (Fig. 9) of the hub (B) must be fixed using the lock pin.

The crankshaft is fixed using the crankshaft lock or the crankshaft lock.

The tension roller arrow is in the middle or max. By 5 mm, the right of the gap of the support plate.

If the hub (c) was not fixed

unscrew the fastening bolts of 1 camshaft gears (A).

The hub (B) must be fixed using a lock pin.

Turn a little a crankshaft against the direction of rotation of the engine shaft, while the pin of the crankshaft will not be near the opening of the sealing flange (Fig. 10).

Then rotate the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine shaft so that the retainer pin is engaged with the sealing flange.

Install the counterproof, as shown in Figure 10.

Click on the counterproof in the direction of the arrow and hold the gears of the camshafts.

Tighten the fastening bolts of camshafts in this position with a torque of 25 nm.

Remove locking pins and crankshaft lock or crankshaft lock.

Make min. 2 The turnover of the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the motor shaft and again set the first cylinder before positioning the upper ground.

Repeat control.

Tighten both the upper bolts of the engine lock torque of 40 nm + 1/2 about. (180 °).

Lower the engine using the Console Support

Tighten the bottom bolt of the engine lock torque of 40 nm + 1/2 vol. (180 °).

Install the bottom and middle part of the gear belt cover.

Set the dramatist vibration damper / belt pulley pulley (replace the fastening bolts). Tightening torque 10 N M + Troubles 90 ° (1/4 turn).

Before installing the pillow of the power unit, you must tighten all the engine support bolts with the prescribed torque.

Install the engine / body pillow (replace the fastening bolts).

Screw the engine's airbag to the engine support, use conjunction to access to parts (Fig. 11). Tightening torque is 60 nm + trunnounce on (1/4 turn).

Install the top of the gear belt cover.

Install the tension element of the polycliner belt Tightening torque 25 nm

Install the polyclinic belt.

Further installation is performed in the reverse order. It must be considered the following

Follow the density of planting fuel hoses.

Feeding and inverse fuel lines are not changing in places (the return fuel line is blue or marked with a blue, feeding fuel line black).

When mounting the duplicate air tubes, follow the reliability of the lading of clamps.

Install the subsidence.

Install the noise insulation screen.

The instruction is suitable for 2.0 l FSI gasoline engines (BLR / BLX / BLY), 2.0 TFSI (AXX / BWA) and 1.6 (BSE).

Removal

2. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative wire from the battery.

10. Remove the 4 crankshaft pulley mounting bolts with vibration damper.

Installation

Note: On TFSI engines, a diamond spray disc, installed behind the gear wheel of the crankshaft, should be replaced after removal.
21. Put the timing belt on the crankshaft pulley. Note: If the belt has already been installed, pay attention to the label indicating the direction of its movement.
22. Secure the bottom limit of the timing belt with two lower bolts.
23. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the new bolts of its attachment.

25. Put the timing belt on the tension roller, on the gear wheel of the camshaft, the water pump and, in conclusion, to the intermediate roller, Note: Make sure the position of the tensioning roller on the cylinder head.

27. Then slightly loosen the belt tension, so that the label (see illustration 22.26 above) was leveled with the indicator.

28. Tighten the fastening nut with an effort of 25 nm.
29. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to two complete turns, returning it to a position corresponding to the first cylinder piston. It is important that the rotation is not less than 1/8 turns (45 ") was performed continuously (without stopping).
30. Check the tension of the toothed belt again (the label must be combined with the indicator) and the timing phase if the VMT labels do not match, repeat the adjustment.
31. Install the top cover of the timing belt.

34. Tighten the lower bolt with a force of 45 nm and lower the engine.
35. Install the engine support assembly and remove the tailcup.
36. Install the drive belt of the auxiliary units (see section 21).
37. Install the cooling system expansion tank, dock it.
38. Connect the ventilation hose and fuel hose.
39. Install the locker and noiseoolement.
40. Install the hood limiters, connect the negative wire of the battery and install the top cover of the engine.
