In traditional engines, the consumption level should be from 0.1 to 0.3% of the total fuel consumption. Often, the presence of an increased oily consumption may be due to the following reasons:
Outdoor leakage, under which the leaks are meant through the glands and gaskets;
Internal oil leakage, which is called avgar.

Outdoor leaks. What are they and what to do to detect them?
The outer leakage is usually easily determined by drops of oil under the vehicle.
Sources of outdoor leakage:
Gasket under the valve lid. This type of leak is one of the most common. The upper part of the engine is one of the most preheated parts, while the gasket materials are growing pretty quickly. In addition, the valve mechanism is often subjected to disassembly during repair work. Removal and reverse installation of the valve cover extremely negatively affects the durability of the gaskets. The gasket under the head block flows quite rarely.

Laying front cover. A rare type of leaks, but also unpleasant due to the grinding in the compartment of the engine of modern models of machines. This fact causes certain difficulties when replacing the gasket.
Selns. The leakage can also occur through the glands: front and rear crankshafts, camshaft seal. The glands begin to skip the oil from their natural wear. Also there is one rarely encountered case - simultaneous small leakage of all seals and engine connections. This often lies the reason why the engine literally "sweats", which is why oil flows in huge quantities.
In this case, the leakage is not associated with the quality of seals. This speaks of too high pressure of crankcase gases. The reason for this pressure lies in the state of the internal parts of the engine. The increased pressure of crankcase gases on active smoke from the crankcase ventilation tube is determined. This problem is eliminated by cleaning the crankcase ventilation system or, in running cases, the overhaul of damaged engines.
It is believed that too liquid or too thick oil level leads to the fact that the oil film generated by the oil-chain ring will be too thin or too thick.
Too thin film poorly seals the combustion chamber, causing a breakthrough of oil droplets along with crankcase gases into the combustion chamber. The oil is burning - from here and an unjustified level of consumption occurs. Too strong viscosity leads to the "float" of the piston rings and also contributes to too high flow rate. Reducing the viscosity of motor oil contributes to the pollution of the fuel system; At the same time, the fuel enters the oil along the cylinder walls, and the resulting mixture is actively burning, causing consumption more than the desired one.
Inner leakage due to oil-challenged caps
The most common types of internal oil leaks in the engine are leaks through valve glands, that is, the oil-challenge caps.
The oil slimming caps from time and temperature lose elasticity, harden, wear out and crack.
Worn valve sleeves allow valves to swing and additionally split valve seals. Oil, overcoming the weak resistance of the gland, flows on the valve down and enters the combustion chamber. You can diagnose the problem by powerful smoking when the engine is started - on a heated engine and when the smoke is weaker.
Also a sign of wear of the oil-challenge caps is the gross thread of spark plugs.
Consider such a cause of leakage as an inner leak due to compression and oil-giving rings. Leaks through rings are associated with their wear, or mobility loss (crooking), or due to wear / destruction of the grooves of piston rings, or zadira on the walls of the cylinders.
The avgar through the rings is accompanied by a smoking in the engine. From the exhaust pipe goes blue or gray smoke with a characteristic smell. Especially it becomes noticeable under load when typing or resetting the gas. On cars with sample catalysts of the current generation smoke can be minority, as the catalyst has time to shove the remains of oils.
What will happen if the excessive oil consumption is not eliminated?
In some cases, consumption coming beyond the normalized engine is lack of lubricant material, which can be one of the reasons for the strongest pollution of the oil system that can provoke a large oil consumption and significantly apply your car. Loss of lubricant leads to a drop in oil pressure, accelerated wear, sharp reduction in resource and engine output. The restoration or replacement of the engine is very expensive, so excessive consumption of lubricants must be eliminated at the earlier stage as possible, if you do not want to go on a new engine.
