All these systems are combined into a common name. TVDI (TURBO-VALVETRONIC-DIRECT-INJECTION) and provide the widest possibilities for adjusting the phases of gas distribution and the formation of local combustion zones of the mixture in the cylinder with the required degree of enrichment.

Valvetronic. Consists of a system of stepless adjustment of the stroke of valves and the phase adjustment mechanism of gas distribution Vanos. With which it is possible to flexible control of the course and phases of intake valves, as well as adjustment of the phases of the exhaust valves.

The mechanism is based on the eccentric shaft of a worm electric drive and a complex system of pushing levers. This is already 3 generation of this system, which despite the complexity of the design as a whole has already proven its reliability.

This applies to the BMW Z4-1.8i, BMW 125i, BMW-X1 20I and BMW-X3 20I models, as well as some models with an index 20i, on which there is a low compression engine (supplied to poor gasoline countries, the S858 option).

For the remaining models with the N20B20-U0 motor to achieve the parameters, the identical factory must be changed by the piston. However, the practice has shown that the motors with the degree of compression 11 as a whole work perfectly on the regular firmware of 245 drugs.

Considering the foregoing, we can concure the conclusion that the most effective way to forcing the BMW N20 motor is.

Of course, there is reason to believe that in adverse conditions (hot weather, high load and impaired engine thermal mode) The detonation control system will reduce the engine power on some value, but still it will be greater than regular 184 drugs.

Let's look at what is the degree of compression and the danger of its high values.

The degree of compression is the geometric indicator of the engine, which is determined by the ratio of the total volume of the cylinder to the general combustion chamber. The higher the degree of compression, the higher the pressure in the cylinder before the ignition of the fuel mixture, and, accordingly, the higher the temperature and pressure of the working fluid at the beginning of the tact work. Usually for a modern motor operating on gasoline 91-98, the compression ratio is in the range of 10.2-11.3. For turbocharged motors, the compression ratio is reduced to 8.5-9.5. This is due to the fact that for the occurrence of detonation, the absolute pressure in the cylinder before ignition is critical, and not the nominal value of the compression ratio. For obvious reasons, motor turbocharged pressure in the cylinder is greater than atmospheric with the same degree of compression.

However, BMW motors with direct fuel injection into the cylinder and Valvetronic have become an exception to this rule. For example, the BMW S55 motor, having a sufficiently high degree of superior (liter power of 143 HP), has a compression ratio of 10.2: 1.

This is primarily due to the features of the working process of motors. TVDI: Due to the formation within the cylinder of local zones with a normal or slightly enriched mixture and evaporation of injected fuel, ideal conditions for combustion of the fuel mixture are created. Thus, it became possible for the reliable operation of such engines with turbocharged with a compression ratio of 10-11 without detonation.

The design of the BMW N20 motor, as a whole, identical to the S55 motor from BMW M3 F80 and taking into account liter power in 122 hp. and technology TVDI, Compression at 11: 1 does not look so much high.

It should be understood that after an increase in power up to 245 hp. Some restrictions will appear during the operation of such a motor:

The start-stop system at each start of the motor is activated, I disconnected it with the button each time. It is said that she has a firmware that remembers the previous mode and saves it with the next engine start. But I did not reach it.

Runflat tires. We already exploit on them already the second car, no inconvenience. Bought a car on summer RF. In winter, I bought a set of ordinary wheels and a branded kit (spare track + jack + key). The difference in hardness with ordinary is felt only on the day of shifting.

Then these sensations are blurred in daily operation and do not remember at all about what rubber you are going. The spare wheel lies in the trunk of 6 months and takes a third of the space. A couple of times in traveling it prevented, it was not useful to directly appropriate.
