For a test drive of the Daewoo Gentra video, a car was demonstrated at an ambient temperature of minus two degrees Celsius.

It took about 8 minutes to warm up the engine. Gentra cars have a standard 1.5 liter engine with 107 hp and a fuel consumption of 6.9 liters per 100 km. Daewoo Gentra can be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission.

In this case, a version of the car with a manual transmission is being tested. The exit was carried out in reverse mode. Reverse speed on this car is turned on with the help of an inconvenient ring on the gearshift lever. The characteristics of the clutch pedal, which is responsible for disconnecting the engine from the gearbox, ensures smooth starting and shifting, as well as the gas pedal, which is responsible for supplying the air-fuel mixture, was tested. The pedals are quite soft.

Feels like the transmissions cannot be said to be very clear, the moves are short. The gear lever does not have a clear stroke, which prevents the possibility of making a mistake in the selection of gears. The gearbox went to Daewoo Gentra from Chevrolet Lacetti, therefore, like its predecessor, the clutch pedal has a long stroke. However, this does not greatly affect the dynamics.

Daewoo responds well to accelerators. The car moves smoothly, without jerking.

The dynamic capabilities of the car are also very important, which you definitely need to know. Unlike the Chevrolet Lacetti, which had three engines of different sizes and power, Daewoo has only one engine, the same as the Chevrolet Cobalt. Gentra engine, 16 valves, four-cylinder, chain driven.

DOHC, multipoint injection. With a power of 107 hp, the torque is 134 Nm. It runs on AI 95 gasoline. Typically, throttle response is assessed by the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h and this parameter is included in the technical characteristics of the vehicle. Acceleration to the first hundred in 11, 9 seconds. The maximum speed is 180 km / h. But the more important factor is the acceleration time from 80 km / h and, for example, to 120 km / h. The calculation is simple. This is important for overtaking most slow-moving vehicles.

Like most cars with 107 hp engines. the acceleration of the Daewoo Gentra is relatively slow and aggravated at low revs. After 3800 engine revolutions, when the torque reaches its maximum, the car starts to accelerate. Only after reaching these parameters is it recommended to overtake. In order to technically and safely overtake (advancing one vehicle by another, associated with leaving the occupied lane and then returning to it according to traffic rules), you need to take into account a set of various factors, including the conditions under which it is prohibited.

The vehicle's dynamic performance is also influenced by the ratio of weight and power. The Daewoo Gentra car has sufficient maneuverability for urban conditions, which is associated with the presence of a 1.5 liter engine and good traction at low and medium speeds. This makes it possible to confidently rebuild and overtake, sometimes without even downshifting.

Sound and noise insulation in the cabin of the Gentra leaves much to be desired. The noise comes from the side. At idle speed of the engine, the noise in the cabin is almost inaudible. When speeding up (1st, 2nd), the noise increases. There is a technical possibility to make additional noise insulation of the rear wheels.

The car is stable and well-controlled on the highway, which is important in urban traffic conditions. The transmission on the Daewoo Gentra is front-wheel drive. The steering wheel is a little too big, but reacts quickly to hand movements. The power steering takes the strain off the steering, making it pleasant and comfortable. Daewoo Gentra is equipped with McPherson front suspension. The suspension design includes a shock absorber strut. Rear suspension - "multi-link" from Cobalta. This is much better than the beam installed on the same Chevrolet Cobalt.

For Daewoo Gentra, the freedom of maneuver is expanded when overtaking and cornering due to slight acceleration. There are disc brakes on the rear and front wheels, so hard braking is technically possible.

The absence of some options, such as the ABS, can easily be corrected by slightly increasing the cost of assembly. Daewoo Gentra is not afraid of competition in its class of cars. Familiar stranger

That's what the hand of the master means! All in all - the eyes narrowed a little, the radiator grille is now smaller, more elegant, from which a good portion of chrome has been removed, the hood has become a little more prominent, the lower lip of the bumper is capriciously curved and decorated with angry "fog lights", and the upper lip has been drawn with light strokes of stamping. But in general, "Gentra" looks much more modern.

However, the affair was limited to a spectacular facelift. From any other angle, the novelty unmistakably recognizes none other than the Lacetti. The one that 11 years ago was drawn for the South Korean Daewoo by the craftsmen of the Italian Pininfarina. Even then, it did not look ultra-fashionable, quite successfully combining the smooth lines characteristic of the 90s and the new sharp edges of the 21st century, and now it does not look outdated at all. And they gave the car a sonorous name: from the Latin Lacertus - young, energetic, strong. In the middle of 2003, we wrote about this car: the replacement of "Nexia" is ready, in August the novelty will be put on the conveyor of the "UzDaewooAvto" plant.

Hello old man! Long time no see…

The interior of "Gentra" is an exact copy of the "Lacetti" salon. You will unmistakably recognize him by the wonderful electric mirror control panel in the corner of the door.

There are even fewer differences in the interior than in the exterior. We have written more than once about the well-designed Lacetti interior - the dark soft plastic of the front panel, very decent seats upholstered with practical fabric (both the texture, and their two-color range, and the large knobs for adjusting the pillow remained the same), a comfortable armrest, simple, but completely understandable and quite effective air conditioner.

Ten years ago, this salon was almost record-breaking spacious. Now, as you understand, there are more spacious cars in the "golf" class. Nevertheless, "Gentra" is very hospitable to passengers - three people can travel on the couch, "by himself" the driver 185 cm tall can sit down without any problems. In the spacious trunk, the lid of which is still opened with a button on the driver's door, two large suitcases still fit - and there is still room. However, there are also minor changes. So, we used to praise the Lacetti's visibility. And now the exterior mirrors are even slightly larger.

And on a ride "Gentra" is similar in everything to "Lacetti". The suspension, which is identical in design, remarkably swallows not only minor, but also major road troubles - the front one is especially good in this respect. And, of course, the increased comfort turns into significant rolls, if you suddenly want to grab the Gentra along a winding path.

The center armrest with cup holders is the privilege of the top version. But any "Gentra" has a third headrest.

Something new

From the very beginning of our acquaintance "Daewoo" pleasantly surprised me. Soundproofing almost completely blocks the noise of the engine at idle - I even tried to start a running engine a couple of times! But just the motor of the new Uzbek car is completely different. If "Lacetti" relied on as many as three - different volumes and capacity from 95 to 121 liters. with., then "Gentra" from all "Chevrolet" variety got the only in-line 1.5-liter "four" in 105 forces.

Incidentally, this is the same engine that is installed on the Cobalt. True, with some changes - different ignition coil, electronic control unit, catalytic converter. In addition, another clutch had to be installed - after all, the 5-speed manual transmission also went to the car from the Lacetti. By the way, it was also installed on the 16-valve "Nexia". And on "Gentra" she, as in "Lacetti", annoys with long lever strokes.

In principle, this Gentre motor is enough. Six hundred miles along Moscow traffic jams and suburban highways with two passengers and luggage did not reveal any big problems. However, it immediately became clear that the "Gentra" is intended exclusively for law-abiding drivers. Up to 60 km / h in the city, its dynamics is quite enough, and then the 1.5-liter engine quickly turns sour. And on the highway you can comfortably move at permitted speeds, and after 110 km / h it becomes noisy in the cabin, and overtaking on the move is given to Daewoo with great stress.

Especially clearly I felt the unhurried nature of the "Gentra", having moved from it to a 2-liter "Duster" - the all-wheel drive "Renault" seemed to me a real hurricane!

Perhaps the only drawback of the roomy and neatly trimmed trunk is the uncovered hinges that can wrinkle the luggage. A full-fledged spare wheel is hidden under the floor - albeit on a steel rim

And nevertheless, for all five days of getting to know the car, no matter how hard I tried, I could not find any serious flaws in it. And the plastic pseudo-tree on the front panel did not irritate, and the confused control of the hatch could not get mad. And all because from the very beginning, even before I got behind the wheel, I studied the price list. So, the basic "Gentra" is 28 thousand cheaper than the 1.4-liter "Lacetti" three years ago! And at the same time it is better equipped. And for half a million you will get a car in a top-end configuration, perhaps without leather, and an automatic machine for Gentre-Elegant is a little expensive - as much as 52 thousand. And nevertheless, such a car will remain unambiguously the best offer in the "golf" class.

Of course, if you rummage through the list of equipment, you can find a total lack of ESP, side and window airbags and leather interior. And yet, I think, neither one nor the other, let alone the third, will not be able to cross out the main advantage of "Gentra": "UzDau" offered us a lot of cars for very little money.

As for the replacement of the "Nexia" ... It seems that it will remain on the assembly line for now - after all, the old woman is more than a hundred thousand rubles cheaper.

Richer and cheaper

The basic configuration "Comfort" can be called a living wage. Such a "Gentra" has a decent power accessories, driver's seat height adjustment, folding sofa, central locking, immobilizer, isofix mounts. Moreover, in terms of equipment, the car for 399 thousand is richer than the base Lacetti for air conditioning, a second airbag, eyeglass case, front center armrest, fog lights, and mirrors and door handles are painted in body color. The automatic transmission will add 50,000 rubles to the base, ABS (such a configuration is called "Optimum") - 17,000 or only 5,000 rubles. with an "automatic".

"Optimum plus" includes heated front seats and "music", and costs 423 and 460 thousand - as you can see, the automatic transmission in this case is much cheaper. Finally, the top-end "Elegant" for 490 thousand means a pseudo-wood finish, adjustable not only in the angle of inclination, but also in the length of the steering wheel, the center armrest at the rear, a remote control with an audio system on the steering wheel and even a sunroof.

Chosen by the whole world

Debuted "Daewoo-Lacetti" in the fall of 2002 at the Seoul Auto Show. Since then, the car has been sold under various names all over the world. In Canada and Mexico, the car was called "Optra", in Europe - "Nubira", in India - SRV. Moreover, he changed his car and surnames: in China it was known as "Buick-Excel", in the USA - "Suzuki-Forenza", in Australia - "Holden-Viva".

The current name was chosen by marketers. Having interviewed a certain number of our compatriots, they settled on the energetic "Gentra". This name was approved by the majority of the respondents.

The new Daewoo Gentra was released only in 2013, that is, quite recently. Although, in this case, it may be new, it is well forgotten old. In fact, you see in front of you a Chevrolet Lacetti restyle with a new power unit, interior refinement and functionality. True, unlike its predecessors, the Gentra can only be found in the form of a sedan. Probably, this is also its competitive disadvantage.

The salon does not differ in particular chic and bells and whistles - but everything is enough for a good and comfortable ride. Let's not be banal, remembering that a car is not a luxury, but a means of transportation. I think no one would refuse to go to a bakery on Lamborghini, but in our conditions it would rather cause more difficulties than advantages.

Despite the fact that Daewoo Gentra is a budget class car, the desire to refine the interior is noticeable. Daewoo keeps up with the times and tries to bring both the filling and style to good standards, as much as possible. And he does not neglect pleasant bonuses.

Among its competitors, the Gentra has a decent base package. The full package of options brings the Gentra almost to the level of comfort of a European golf-class car.
Among competitors, this is one of the best options for price / quality.

The release of the new model Uz-Daewoo is a very high-profile event, because the conservative Uzbek concern rarely allows itself premieres. The more interesting it becomes to explore Daewoo Gentra.

Appearance

First look at the novelty ... stop though. What is this novelty? Poured Chevrolet Lacetti! Indeed, the Gentra is made on the basis of the Lacetti, but has undergone a number of changes, so it can be rightfully considered a novelty. The main innovation is a completely different powertrain, but first, let's figure out the appearance.

Behind the Daewoo Gentry, only the brand nameplate stands out - otherwise there are no differences from Chervolet. But ahead, the Uzbek model looks fresher. Firstly, cute teardrop-shaped headlights from the Lacetti hatchback migrated here (the sedan had others, more archaic). Secondly, there is a new grille and a new front bumper. Here I liked it the most, namely - its expressive lower edge, emphasizing the fog lights. It seems like a trifle, but the appearance of the car changes.

Salon Daewoo Gentra

Daewoo Gentra's salon looks much more interesting than many classmates, and this is not surprising. The Lacetti was being prepared for release in 2002-2003, when "frenzied economy" had not yet become a tradition among automakers. It is now possible to bring a car to the market without headrests, armrests and other little things, hiding behind a low price. Then the buyers did not understand this, and Daewoo Gentra keeps the blessed spirit of those times.



For example, how do you like the wood grain finish in a budget car? It is, of course, plastic. But it looks, in combination with dark gray plastic, quite organic, no worse than, say, in the new Toyota Camry. And on top, the dashboard is covered with a soft (!) Pad. You can't push a centimeter with your finger, but it's nice, by God!

There is also a sunroof, armrests in the front (with box) and rear (with cup holders), three headrests, a bunch of pockets, adjustable cup holders and even ashtrays. A dozen years ago, all this was an obligatory attribute of a normal car, even if it was cheap.



Now marketers will not give you all this for free! Do you want the headrests in the back? Order a "security package" with a bunch of unnecessary options that somehow need to be sold. Oh, you also have a sunroof? Well, this is exclusively in the "Deluxe" package with an automatic transmission and xenon headlights for an amount worthy of a business-class sedan. Daewoo Gentra is like a breath of nostalgia for the era when the buyer did not try by all means to sell penny options for crazy money. Enjoy!

Separately, it must be said about the audio system. It is new here, two-din. During my brief acquaintance with the car, I could not find a USB input, but the press service assured me that serial cars will have a connector. So for those who like to make a "diagnosis by photography" we suggest waiting for the official start of sales.

Seats are another story. The front seats of the Daewoo Gentra are upholstered in not the most pleasant fabric, the pillow is short, the back is flat ... And it's hard to sit on all this. But adjustments! This is now not found even on crossovers for a million ... With the help of two lambs, you can raise the pillow either in front or behind, adjusting its tilt. There is also an adjustment of the lumbar support, though mechanical and in only two positions. But it's still great.




There are no adjustments at the back, but the upholstery is the same, frankly, budget. I also did not like the fact that the seats are set low relative to the floor, as in frame SUVs. Above the head, of course, there is a lot of space, but the fact that the knees have to be raised higher is inconvenient. One thing is good - with my height of 175 cm, you do not rest against the back of the front seat, even if it is pushed back to the maximum.

Trunk

In terms of trunk volume, Daewoo Gentra cannot compete very convincingly. Whereas now in the class of state employees it is customary to make cargo compartments "500 plus", Gentra can boast of only 405 liters of volume. Large loops, moreover, will hide some of the space.

But many ergonomic solutions in Daewoo Gentra are very sensible. For example, the lid can be opened from the passenger compartment - the button is somewhat unusual, but quite conveniently located on the driver's door. In addition, the raised floor can be fastened to the edge of the luggage opening in order to safely get the spare tire (full-size, by the way), if necessary. It is also important that the lid has felt upholstery - imagine, the Chevrolet Cobalt and Renault Logan have bare metal on the back!

Driving qualities

Unfortunately, not a single customs-cleared Daewoo Gentra with license plate numbers in Russia is yet available - the car has just been presented to the general public. Therefore, the way to the public roads was ordered to us, and our test drive was limited to the compact parking lot of the Russian representative office of Uz-Daewoo.

And take a ride on the new Gentra as it should, oh, how you want! After all, the most important changes affected the power unit. The engine is new here - 1.5-liter DOHC, comparable to that installed on the same as on the Chevrolet Cobalt. Although both engines are manufactured at the GM Powertrain Uzbekistan plant, they are not the same. They have a different clutch, catalytic converter system, engine control module and some other components.

In addition, according to the press service, the car will receive the same 6-speed "automatic". On the track, the behavior of the car with such a box is very decent. True, Daewoo Gentra with automatic transmission will appear only in the fall, and modifications with the usual 5-speed "mechanics" will be the first to see the light.



The manual transmission itself is common for a state employee. Not too clear and short moves, not the most convenient ring for engaging reverse gear ... But those who will change to Daewoo Gentras of derivatives of the domestic car industry or, say, Renault Logan, will feel a positive difference.
The soundproofing of the engine compartment, as a first approximation, is worse than in the same Chevrolet Cobalt - the engine is heard quite well. But a 6-speed automatic will help here, with which the engine will work at moderate speeds most of the time.

Alas, nothing can be said about dynamics and suspension. Sales start on July 1, 2013. Then it will be possible to test the car in action. Until then, be patient.

By the way, for reference: Daewoo Gentra is nothing more than the well-known brainchild of the General Motors (GM) concern - Chevrolet Lacetti, which was discontinued under this brand. The Daewoo plant, located in Uzbekistan, has begun production of a model that has already been discontinued, but is still in demand. Efforts have been made to reduce production costs in order to offer customers a truly inexpensive and reasonably reliable vehicle. Reliability can be indicated by the fact that dealers offer an extended warranty for five years. The factory warranty is two years of operation or a mileage of 100 thousand km.


An example of the fact that the model for production in Uzbekistan has been successfully chosen is the fact that a large number of Lacetti work in taxis. This indicates the low cost of the kilometers traveled, which is so important in this business.

About the price of the car: Gentra is available from 399,000 rubles, although for this money you will not even get airbags (they will appear in the configuration for 420,000). For 500,000 there will already be airbags and air conditioning, but the gearbox is mechanical. The maximum configuration with a Korean-made automatic gearbox (by the way, the real one is a torque converter, and not just a robotic one) will cost 549,000 rubles.


A few words about the motor. Gentra does not have a variety of power units - it is possible to have one single gasoline 16-valve with a volume of 1.5 liters, producing 108 hp. The engine is quite modern, meets the EURO5 standards and at the same time is understandable from the point of view of repairs. Gasoline will have to be filled in 95th. Note that the timing system uses a chain, which eliminates the need for regular and expensive timing belt replacement.

The test drive showed that the power and torque for the hardworking machine is quite enough. Anyone who wants a more frisky behavior from Gentra can try to do it.


As for the dimensions of the cabin, everything is also not bad here - even for passengers in the back, and the trunk (400 liters) in fact turns out to be larger than it seems from the outside.

The torpedo and the dashboard are made in a faceless, traditional style of Japanese models of the 90s of the 20th century. The plastic used is quite decent, the accuracy of processing the interior details is also at the level.


Although a little ridiculous and cheap finish imitating a valuable species of wood attracted attention. Simple stripes of black or silver would look much more appropriate.

The audio system in its sound corresponds to the general budget level of the car.


The disadvantage, in our opinion, is that the Gentra is only available as a sedan. But the station wagon-Lacetti was simply created for trips to the country with things, a dog, building materials, etc.

Also, in the maximum configuration, I would like to see the climate control system, and not just the on / off button for the air conditioner.
Other parameters of the car - sound insulation, suspension operation, manual transmission, handling corresponded to the class of inexpensive cars, and did not cause irritation.

Summing up, we can say that given that Uzbek-made spare parts are not expensive, used cars, by analogy with Nexia, will be in stable demand (unless, of course, they suddenly start to "crumble" after a certain run). This gives a significant advantage over Chinese cars - Gentra's main competitors. The car is suitable for those who are primarily interested in the low price of the vehicle, as well as the cost of the traveled kilometer, and at the same time want to get all the advantages of a new car.
