Initially, the Niva was designed for residents of agricultural areas. However, the sky-high price for an ordinary Soviet peasant - the new Niva VAZ-2121 cost 10.5 thousand Soviet rubles - made it a dream of millions, but an unattainable dream. In the presence of an open shortage of passenger cars in the USSR, there was no queue for Niva, and the management of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant decided to reduce the retail price to 9 thousand rubles. Niva of the times of the country of the Soviets was practically the only original and incredibly successful development of Soviet design engineers. The Chevrolet Niva transmission has recently been distinguished by enviable noise and increased vibration. It is completely impossible to eliminate this defect due to the fact that the transfer case and the gearbox are two separate units, which are interconnected by an intermediate short shaft, with a rubber vibration damper attached.

To this day, five-speed gearboxes are installed on the Chevrolet Niva 2, which in 1994 replaced the four-speed gearboxes installed on the Niva. If you change the rubber covers in time, the front CV joints are almost eternal. At the same time, there is also a significant drawback - to replace the cover, you have to disassemble almost the entire drive from the front.

The main thing, according to Jeffrey Glover, is that the new Chevrolet Niva, just like its predecessors, will remain an all-wheel drive SUV. The future all-terrain vehicle will retain the dimensions of the previous Chevrolet Niva, the weight will remain in front of 1400 kg, all the best off-road qualities of the domestic "rogue" will be increased. According to the general director of the GM-AVTOVAZ JV, the management of the auto enterprise does not intend to follow the lead of fashion and move towards the SUV either now or in the future.

The official premiere of the restyled Chevrolet Niva is scheduled for August 2014 as part of the Moscow International Motor Show shows.

A heavy spare wheel sooner or later makes the tailgate sag and it starts to close badly. The bumper mountings weaken over time and fairly noticeable gaps form between them and the body. Often there is a backlash at the driver's door and door handles. The glasses, with frequent lowering, gradually become covered with scratches and eventually warp and seize.



The weak point of the lower part of the car is the side members. They rust and often deform when jacked up. The engine protection can rub against the curve of the spar while driving, the squeak is especially audible during turns. In aged cars, fuel pipes in the area of ​​the right wheel often rot.



The trunk is quite modest, only 320 liters, folding the seats allows you to increase its volume to 650 liters, but for the transportation of long vehicles, the depth of the resulting opening will be small. The upholstery is very practical and easy to clean, but with additional niches it's just a disaster, there's really nowhere to put the driver's belongings. Some configurations include a proprietary shovel hanging on the fifth door on the other side of the spare wheel.

Salon Niva Chevrolet is a composite hodgepodge of VAZ models of the late 90s, most of the parts are from model 2115. The plastic is hard, echoing, but wear-resistant. Large drivers have loose seats. The front panel can deform under the influence of direct sunlight, especially the glove compartment lid (it just stops closing). Cold air can blow through the torn anthers of the gearbox levers and the transfer case, and water can leak through the steering shaft seal and antenna mounts.



In 2009, the car was seriously modernized. The Italian design studio Bertone was in charge of the update, so the restyling affected the exterior of the car and the interior decoration. The radiator grill has changed, new lensed headlights have appeared, and the lights have acquired a different pattern, the bumpers have changed, and the rear one has received a convenient rubber pad, which facilitates the loading of oversized cargo.



The cabin now has a different steering wheel with three spokes and a more comfortable gear knob, an open box and two cupholders between the seats, different seats and a better headliner. When the dimensions are turned on, the ignition sometimes works, despite the fact that the key is not even inserted into the lock. The headlights are pretty good, especially after restyling, however, due to poor contacts, lamp holders sometimes burn and the plastic of the reflectors melts.

The suspension is energy-intensive, but on normal asphalt this leads to excessive body swing, which is most felt in corners. It is especially uncomfortable for rear passengers; it even throws them on speed bumps. The car fully opens up on rough terrain, long suspension travel and permanent all-wheel drive allow you to drive where modern crossovers with complex electronic filling fail.


Up to about 50,000 km, usually nothing knocks or rattles, but then intervention is usually required. The first to be rented are the ball joints in front and the silent blocks of the jet rods in the back. The rubber-metal hinges of the upper right arm burn out due to the constant thermal effect of the exhaust system. Many parts, including shock absorbers, may require replacement by 100,000 km.


A separate conversation will be about wheel bearings. They require adjustment and tightening approximately every 30 thousand kilometers, then their resource will be about 80 thousand. Regular outings with mud and water ramps cut the service life of wheel bearings, like brake drums, by about half.


The pedals are quite far apart and can be driven with heavy boots. Thanks to the effective vacuum booster, the car brakes well, the pedal is soft throughout the travel. Front brake pads run about 30-40 thousand, discs 60-70 thousand km. The rear drums can easily go 120 thousand kilometers, although the pads in them will have to be changed twice during this time. It is better to replace brake hoses preventively after 100,000 km of run, they can crack at the most unexpected moment.

If a year ago I immediately realized that I was in front of a modernized version, now, looking at the Niva model of 2010, I do not notice any visible changes. The same plastic body kit, the face worked in the same corporate style with the gimbals of the headlights-sockets of the dipped beam, the proud Bertone Edition nameplates on the sides.

And the salon is nothing new. The inscription “air bag” cannot be found with or without a magnifying glass, which means that there are still no airbags that are absolutely necessary for a modern car. At the first braking, it turned out that there was no anti-lock braking system either. And where is the promised technological breakthrough?

In fact, Togliatti residents promised a lot: “ease of removal and reeling of seat belts”, “modernization of the gearbox lever”, “use of spring clamps to compensate for hose shrinkage”, “introduction of cardan shafts with constant velocity joints”, “transfer case with double-row bearings”. In the same spirit, a dozen more gallant phrases.

And after a quarter of an hour I understand that it was not in vain that they worked in Togliatti - the shaking has not yet been eliminated at all, but it has been significantly diminished. So, for the "CV joints" - offset! But is that really all? Sadly ... you will laugh, but even the "updated" seat belt continues to bite the tape in the drum, and the seat sled still emit a painfully familiar creak. What can we say about ABS and pillows ...

As a buyer of a car, and not a “peasant with hands and a heap of free time,” I do not care at all how, in the same driveshafts, the moment is transmitted from the motor to the wheels. The main thing is that everything works and does not break. Do you think I demand too much from a domestic car? But, excuse me, VAZ-2123, which was renamed “Chevrolet” eight years ago, at a price very close to its foreign competitors, and therefore the demand for it is increasing.

Alas, despite attempts to improve and correct something in the design of a very talented off-road vehicle, the Chevrolet-Niva is still closer to the Samodelkin's set than to a modern car. But its price is not at all a toy - in the maximum configuration, the Chevy will lighten the buyer's wallet by almost $ 17,000. How will this sell when the Renault Duster debuts on the market?
