"Generations". VW Golf from first to seventh, driven by Belarusians. All generations of Volkswagen Golf Volkswagen Golf old model

the main / Driving

In 1974 the car factory in Wolfsburg stops production of the "Beetle". It was decided to transfer the production of the car of the century to Mexico. In the same year, in May, Volkswagen launches a new Golf model.

A new era begins in the history of the automotive industry. Front-wheel drive golf-class cars with a cooled 4-cylinder engine and an all-metal body made of steel immediately gained wide recognition in the world car market and became one of the best-selling small cars.

According to the tradition of naming cars with names associated with natural phenomena, the car was dubbed by the name of the current in the ocean.

The Golf combines practicality with excellent technical performance.

The Golf range includes 4 models of compact cars.

The first Golf model embodied the idea of equipping the compact hatchback with front-wheel drive and a water-cooled engine. Golf becomes the ancestor of the European "C" class. For many years to come, this model has determined the development of the automotive industry in Germany, and, perhaps, throughout the world.

The classic Golf had an unpresentable appearance, a modest design, laconic plastic trim, average comfort was compensated by the presence of front-wheel drive, which was the ultimate dream for an ordinary European. It is also worth noting a wide range of engines running on gasoline and diesel, the ability to choose a car with an automatic or manual transmission, as well as body modifications.

The range of bodies used in the assembly of the Golf was initially wide enough. These are three- or five-door hatchbacks, the Jetta sedan, and even a convertible, also designed on the Golf platform.

Variations of the Golf were distinguished by the presence of additional functions, such as the presence of alloy wheels on the wheels, a rear window washer, etc.

The fuel consumption of the car is more than economical and was about 8.6 liters for every 100 km. The initial low speed and dynamic capabilities (maximum acceleration to 149 km / h and reaching a speed of 90 km / h in 13.2 seconds) were increased in the model and demonstrated in the Golf GTI a year after the launch of the first models.

The first presentation of this car took place in the fall of 1975 in Frankfurt at an auto show in the salon. It was a sporty version of its older brother and combined the low cost while maintaining the speed characteristics of the sporty models. The 1.6-liter engine develops power up to 110 hp. and in just 9.1 seconds it achieves a speed of 100 km / h. These indicators have become a real sensation in the world of the automotive industry. The design solution in the car's design also carried the elements of a sports classic. This includes the window frames, painted in deep black, the steering wheel and the pressed-in seat and other options, even outwardly allowing the Golf GTI to be considered a sports classic.

Sales of this car were very high, which confirmed the correctness of the strategy chosen by them in the development of the Golf model.

In 1976, they released another improved Golf Diesel GTI, equipped with a 50 hp engine. with a turbodiesel volume of 1.5 liters.

1979 saw the premiere of yet another model: the Golf Cabriolet. Based on the classic Golf platform, this car has a soft, easy-to-fold top. And his studio Karmann from Osnabrück was involved in the development of the body design. The convertible has been in production for 14 years.

The first generation Golf over the years of production was in constant demand, the number of cars left the assembly line reached about 6.8 million. The model has become a classic and over time it began to require improvement. Thus, the release of the ancestor of the family was interrupted in 1983.

In the same year, Volkswagen presented the world with a reissue of its beloved model, the Golf II. The design features of the car were retained, but unlike its predecessor, the new car was devoid of some shortcomings and was enriched with additional options that bring comfort and convenience.

This car has become a kind of benchmark, which is still guided when talking about models of the Golf - class.

Briefly, the advantages and disadvantages of the model can be summarized as follows:

Pros: high reliability and long service life; good maintainability; driving performance of sports versions of very decent quality; wide range

selection of alternative spare parts.

Disadvantages: expensive dispenser-distributor Bosch K (KE) Jetronic; frequent malfunctions of electronic injection; short-lived, expensive and difficult to repair compressor; frequent leakage of the crankshaft and gearbox seals.

The dimensions of the hatchback have increased markedly: length by 300mm, width by 55mm, thanks to which the interior has expanded.

The injection era began with the release of the GTI. The engine with a working volume of 1.1 to 1.8 liters made it possible to develop power from 50 to 90 hp. And with Bosch K-Jetronic injection, it developed a power of 112 hp. Thanks to the body reconstruction, the aerodynamic capabilities of the car have improved, which significantly reduced air resistance. They switched to 16-valve engines a few years later, in 1985, at the same time the mass installation of exhaust gas converters began.

Initially, the VW Golf II had two gearbox options: three-speed hydromechanical, as well as mechanical for four gears. Five-speed manual gearboxes began to be installed on the GTI.

The Golf family has grown every year:

1984 Jetta sedan.

1986 all-wheel drive Syncro.

1989 Golf II Country SUV with four-wheel drive. Equipped with a spar, it was the first Golf SUV.

The concern produced 6.3 million Golf II cars, and in 1991 the new Golf of the third generation debuted.

Unusual design, rich and comfortable interior made the new model quite distinctive.

There was an increase in the volume of engines and an expansion of their range as a whole. Seven petrol and 3 diesel. Gasoline engines 16-valve, narrow and V-shaped sixes with a camber angle of only 15 degrees also differed in power (from 60 to 190 hp). The kit for gasoline engines included converters, the use of which was by that time ubiquitous.

Diesel engines were naturally aspirated with 64 and 75 hp, as well as a turbocharged model developing power up to 90 hp.

The dynamic characteristics of the car were as follows: acceleration to 100 km / h was carried out in 7.8 seconds, and the maximum speed reached was 225 km / h.

A four-speed automatic transmission added power to the car. The most powerful of them were equipped with an electric transmission, which made it possible to feel more confident on the road, and to make the car itself faster and more economical in fuel consumption. In such models, disc brakes were installed on the wheels.

The new high-speed capabilities of the car made us think about the active and passive safety of the car. Therefore, they were all equipped with amplifiers built into the doors, the body itself had a solid frame. The third generation Golf car was equipped with front airbags for the safety of the passenger traveling next to the driver and the driver himself. The steering column had a deformation space of 170mm, the backs of the seats installed at the rear were sheathed with steel, to give greater strength under mechanical stress.

For the first time, the concern began to give a guarantee against perforating corrosion for a period of 12 years or more.

The Golf III offers ABS, heated seats, electrically adjustable side mirrors and a host of other features.

The line of bodies included hatchbacks, a convertible, a Vento sedan, as well as a Golf Variant with an elongated body, the ability to transform the cabin from passenger to cargo by reclining the seats, which increased the useful volume of the luggage compartment to 1425 liters.

For export to the United States and for other countries, a convertible model was created on the Golf III platform, similar to previous models. It had only a slightly updated look and a few new minor options, such as a heated rear window.

The number of Golf IIIs produced reached 4.8 million. The production of these cars was stopped in 1997. Ease of use, reliability, attractive appearance and high-speed capabilities have made the car versatile and popular.

In connection with the termination of production of the Golf III, the concern began production of the fourth generation Golf.

The design move can be considered a special pride of this development. Without undergoing global changes in the body part, the appearance of the car has changed beyond recognition. It has acquired a modern and unusual look. Headlights (low and high beam, turn signals and fog lights) on each side are hidden under a common cover. The rear pillar, on which the roof rests, was made curved and smoothly merging into the wings of the car. For greater noise insulation of the cabin, special materials with high sound-absorbing properties were used in the manufacture of the body.

The fourth generation Golf has four trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and GTI.

For the first time, rain sensors and navigation systems were installed on a car of this class.

Already standard and mandatory for each model have become: ABS, front and side airbags, power steering and others, which were previously found only in top-end modifications and were considered optional for installation. The artists painted the headrests in the rear seats of the car in body color.

The size of the Golfa IV has increased again. The length increased by 131mm and reached 4149mm, and the width - by 30mm, which was 2511mm.

The range of engines has slightly expanded and includes six gasoline and three diesel engines with a capacity of 68 to 180 hp. with.

In the recent past, the Volkswagen concern presented a new model of the fifth generation Golf V. This was another breakthrough of the German manufacturer. The platform for this car is the so-called “all-Volkswagen” platform, on the basis of which the Audi A3 and VW Touran have already been designed. The dimensions of the car have increased again. The length has reached 4204mm (+ 57mm), the width is 1759mm (+ 24mm), and the height is 1483mm (+ 39mm). Such an expansion of the cabin will not leave indifferent any passenger, who now, even sitting in the back seat, will be able to calmly stretch out his legs and enjoy the smooth and quiet running of the car, which is achieved thanks to the multi-link rear suspension and additional noise-insulating materials equipped with the body. All Golf V modifications are equipped with a full set of airbags in the amount of 6 pieces, ABS with brake assist and ESP.

The trunk volume is 347 liters.

The Golf V is available in three trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline.

The range of engines for the new item consists of 2 gasoline engines (1.4 l, 75 hp; 1.6 l, 115 hp) and a pair of turbodiesels: 1.9 TDI with a capacity of 110 hp. with. and a 140-horsepower 2.0 TDI.

In the future, it is planned to expand the lineup with more powerful engines and, as a result, equip with a V-shaped "six" with a capacity of 250 hp. with a working volume of 3.2 liters, equipped with a robotic "mechanics" DSG with two clutches.

The mechanism of the golf class in the fifth generation has reached perfection and offers the maximum range of offers in its segment, differing in a variety of modifications and equipment.

The Golf V can be recognized as the benchmark for its combination of style, dynamics and handling reliability.

The German company Volkswagen has been producing Golf from 1974 to the present time. The name comes from the name of the warm sea current of the Gulf Stream. This model is ranked third in the world and first in Europe as the best-selling car. Thanks to the new front-wheel drive concept and economy, he became the savior of Volkswagen and brought it out of the economic crisis of the 70s associated with the increase in oil prices.

Throughout its history, the car has undergone as many as 7 generations of changes and has received many awards. The latest Car of the Year awards went to the 6th generation in 2009 and the 7th generation of the Golf in 2013.

For the most part, this is a three-door hatchback, but there are options with 5 doors, a station wagon, a sedan and even a convertible. In some countries, it has other names - Jetta, Bora, Vento, Rabbit and Caribe. Golf's closest competitors are Audi A3, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Ceed, Lada Vesta, Mazda 3, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sentra, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308, Skoda Octavia, Renault Fluence and Toyota Corolla.

Golf I (1974-1983)

The model appeared on the market in the spring of 1974 and served as the basis for a new compact car class. The predecessor of the Golf was the VW Beetle (Beetle), which was produced simultaneously until 1985. From the very first day of sales, the car became a bestseller. For 10 years of production of the first model, about 6 million copies were produced, including 1 million diesel variants.

At first, the motors were borrowed from the Audi 50 and Audi 80 (50 and 70 hp). They were economical, which was very important during the oil crisis (consumption was about 6.5 liters per hundred). In 1976, a 50 hp diesel engine appeared. Front-wheel drive with transverse engine. Front suspension type "MacPherson strut", rear - semi-independent twisting beam at the rear. Three transmission options - 4 and 5-speed manual transmissions and 3-speed automatic transmissions.

The main body shape is a 3-door hatchback, but there were also 5-door ones. In 1979, the Jetta model appeared - a sedan with 2 and 4-door bodies. It was mainly popular in North America. With a convertible body, the first generation was produced from 1980 to 1993. In 1975, air conditioning was offered as an option.

Golf II (1983-1991)

In 1983, the second generation Golf model was introduced. Over 9 years, more than 6 million copies have been produced. In the 90s, a lot of these used cars were transported to Russia. The body is only a hatchback with 3 or 5 doors. The number of options and additional equipment has increased.

The engines were installed gasoline with a volume of 1.3 to 2.0 liters (50-133 hp) and diesel with a volume of 1.6 (54-70 hp) atmospheric and turbocharged. in 1989, 1V eco-diesel with a capacity of 60 hp appeared. and SB - the most powerful (80 hp). Diesel fuel consumption is about 6 liters per hundred.

The transmission can be selected from three options - 4 and 5-speed manual transmissions or 3-speed automatic transmissions.

It is worth mentioning a separate branch of the model - Golf Country. This is a frame all-wheel drive vehicle with increased ground clearance. The rear axle is driven automatically through a viscous coupling when the front wheels slip. In total, about 7 thousand copies were produced and due to the high price and low demand, it was discontinued.

Golf III (1991-1997)

It was first shown at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show. This generation of cars has also become very popular. In 1992 he received the European Car of the Year award. In total, about 4.8 million copies were produced. A 5-door station wagon and a convertible were added to the standard 3 and 5-door hatchback bodies for the second model. The Golf III was the forerunner of the diesel mania that began in Europe in the 90s. In the 2000s, several tens of thousands of used cars were imported to Russia.

All engines from the beginning of production of steel with direct injection to meet the requirements of the EEC. The range of gasoline engines in terms of power and volume has also expanded - from 1.4 to 2.9 liters (55-190 hp). The diesel engine was 1.9 liters - one naturally aspirated (64 hp) and three turbocharged (75, 90 and 110 hp). The transmission has also undergone changes - 4 and 5-speed manual transmissions and 4-speed automatic transmissions.

Golf IV (1997-2004)

The fourth generation Golf became the best-selling in Europe in 2001, but in 2002 it took the second place, giving way to the first Peugeot 206. In Mexico and China, the car was produced until 2010. In total, about 4 million copies were produced. During its production, it has won 6 different prestigious awards.

The interior fittings and equipment have improved significantly - it has become the closest to premium cars in its form factor. The body is made in three versions - 3 and 5-door hatchbacks and a 5-door station wagon. On the basis of the Golf, a sedan named Volkswagen Bora was also released, in America the name remained the same - VW Jetta.

In the fourth Golf, the choice of engine is very wide. Gasoline engines - 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.3 liters BP5 (from 75 to 170 hp), 2.8 liters V6 (from 177 to 204 hp) and 3.2 liters R32 (240 hp). Diesel engines - 1.9 liters naturally aspirated SDI, as well as 1.9 liter turbodiesel from 90 to 150 hp. The transmission options have greatly expanded - 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions, 4-speed automatic transmissions, 5-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and 6-speed DSG (preselective gearbox).

Golf V (2003-2008)

It was first exhibited in October 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and almost immediately went on sale. Based on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform. The design of the car was redesigned, but the general features and silhouette remained the same, the size of the body increased slightly, and therefore the interior, as well as the trunk, from 330 to 350 liters. The suspension and chassis tuning have undergone major changes, resulting in improved handling and ride comfort. The interior trim remained at a very high level achieved in the fourth Golf. During its launch, the Golf V has won over 20 different awards.

The body is made in four variants - 3 and 5-door hatchback, 5-door station wagon and 5-door MPV (compact minivan), called Golf Plus. The convertible was not produced, since in 2006 the Volkswagen Eos came out with a folding hardtop, and in 2004 the VW New Beetle appeared in the performance of a convertible, replacing the Golf.

The choice of engines is very large. Gasoline - 1.4 liters (l4) from 75 to 170 HP, 1.6 liters (l4) from 102 to 116 HP, 2.0 liters (l4) from 150 to 230 HP , 2.5 liters (l5), 3.2 liters (VR6) 250 hp Diesel engines from 1.9 to 2.0 liters (TDi) from 91 to 170 hp, all turbocharged with direct injection. There are also many transmissions to choose from - 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions, 6-speed tiptronic automatic transmissions, as well as 6 and 7-speed DSG (preselective gearboxes).

Golf VI (2008-2012)

The sixth Golf was first shown on August 6, 2008 at the Paris Motor Show, and went on sale at the beginning of winter. The design did not undergo major changes, mainly facelift, but engineering solutions were made that made it possible to shorten the production time and slightly reduced the cost of the salon. The chassis remains the same - the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform.

For the first time in Golf history, air conditioning was included as standard. Also, the car had at least seven airbags, making it the safest car in its class at the time of release according to the Euro NCAP rating. During production, the car has won more than 20 different awards, including the "World Car of the Year" in 2009.

The body is made in four versions - 3 and 5-door hatchback, 5-door station wagon and in 2011 a 2-door convertible was presented. The convertible has an electro-hydraulically operated soft top that opens in 9.5 seconds and can be opened at speeds up to 30 km / h.

The engine range is also extensive. Gasoline from 1.2 to 2.5 liters with a capacity of 80 to 270 hp, diesel from 1.6 to 2.0 liters with a capacity of 105 to 140 hp. (all turbocharged), as well as one 1.6 liter (102 hp) LPG engine. The choice of transmissions is the same as in the previous generation.

Golf VII (2012-present)

The Golf Mk7 was announced on September 4, 2012 in Berlin and then exhibited at the Paris Motor Show. In Europe, sales began on November 10, 2012. The car is based on the new Volkswagen Group MQB platform (Modularer Querbaukasten in German, Modular transverse matrix in Russian), which is used on the Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia. Thanks to this platform, the interior space has increased. The overall length (56 mm) and width (20 mm) also increased slightly. The body is made in three versions - 3 and 5-door hatchback, 5-door station wagon.

A new safety system was introduced, which additionally tightens the seat belts of the driver and passengers in case the radar detects a collision hazard. The car will automatically brake after the first collision to avoid a second collision. Other security systems are also used - control of road markings and signs, warning of driver fatigue, automatic parking. The 7th Golf has won numerous awards - North American Car of the Year (2015), European Car of the Year (2013), World Car of the Year (2013), Japan Car of the Year (2013), etc.

The legendary Volkswagen Golf was first introduced to the world in 1974. The car was awarded the original name in honor of the warm ocean current - the Gulf Stream (German: Golfstrom). Golf is the most successful model of the German auto giant and one of the best-selling in the world. This car laid the foundation for a whole class of cars that was named after him. The modest plastic trim, angular design and average comfort paid off with front-wheel drive (extremely rare at the time), a wide range of petrol and diesel powertrains, a choice of bodies (three- or five-door hatchback, Jetta sedan and convertible).

Golf was produced in two versions (basic and luxury), had a wide range of options: a rear window washer, a wiper, a sunroof, a lockable gas tank cap and alloy wheels.

The base power unit was a 1.1-liter 50 hp engine. with. With it, the car accelerated to 90 km / h in 13.2 seconds. The maximum speed is up to 149 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 8.6 liters per 100 km. From the very beginning, customers were offered cars not only with a manual transmission, but also with an "automatic".

In the fall of 1975, the VW Golf GTI was presented to visitors to the Frankfurt Salon. The sports version of the model, combining the cost of a subcompact and the dynamics of a sports coupe. The GTI version was distinguished by black window frames, sports seats and a steering wheel, wheel frames extended with plastic linings and a number of other details. The main driving force was the 1.6-liter engine with the K-Jetronic fuel injection system. The motor had a power of 110 horsepower at 6100 rpm. This made it possible to develop a speed of 100 km / h in 9 seconds, and its maximum speed was 183 km / h.

Cars with the GTI badge began to be in special demand on the market, therefore, already in 1976, the Golf Diesel GTI appeared, equipped with a 1.5-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 50 hp.

In 1979 Volkswagen presents the new Golf convertible with a folding soft top. The body was made by the renowned Karmann atelier from Osnabrück. The production of the Golf I convertible stretched from 1980 to 1993, until the Golf III was introduced. This was due to the fact that during the period when the production of the Golf I had already been stopped and replaced by the Golf II, the convertible version of the Golf II did not appear.

The Golf I was discontinued in 1983. During the production of the first model in Germany, about 5,625,000 vehicles were produced, including about 450,000 in the GTI version. In the USA and Canada it was produced under the Volkswagen Rabbit trademark, and in Latin America - Volkswagen Caribe.

The second generation Golf was released in August 1983. The car has become larger. The length has increased by 300 mm, the width by 55 mm, the interior has become more spacious and comfortable. A more perfect body shape reduced the air resistance coefficient from 0.42 for the previous model to 0.34. The main features of the car were retained by Volkswagen specialists, but at the same time they were supplemented and improved. A set of gasoline and diesel engines from 1.1 to 1.8 liters with a capacity of 50 to 90 hp was offered, gearboxes are manual and automatic.

The Generation Golf II has proven generous with modifications. 1984 saw the introduction of the GTI with an 8-valve 112 hp engine. Maximum speed up to 186 km / h and acceleration to 100 km / h in 9.7 s. In 1985 the legendary GTI 16V (139 hp) expands the range. Sales of the Golf GTI II surpassed sales of the first generation GTI to 17,193 vehicles in 1989.

The all-wheel drive Golf Syncro appeared in 1986.

But the most striking addition to the family was the appearance in 1989 of the all-wheel drive version of the Golf II Country. The body and units of the Golf Syncro are installed here on the frame, which gives the car an impressive ground clearance, while, like the Syncro, the Country has a viscous clutch in the rear axle drive, which ensures automatic connection of the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. This modification was assembled at the Steyr plant in Graz (Austria). Due to the high price, the model did not find wide demand, only a little more than 7000 units were produced.

In the late 80s VW experimented with mechanical supercharging. The result is a "charged" Volkswagen Golf G60 equipped with a 160-horsepower 1.8-liter engine.

Golf II was produced not only in factories in Germany, but also in France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Japan and the USA. Volkswagen continued to produce the Golf II until 1992. 6.3 million copies rolled off the assembly line.

The debut of the third generation Golf took place in August 1991 at the Geneva Motor Show. Body choices included a three-door and five-door hatchback, a Golf Variant station wagon, and a convertible. The luggage compartment of the station wagon with the rear seats folded back was 1425 liters.

The Golf III received a unique design and a much more spacious interior. Additional equipment includes the ABS system, electric seat heating, air conditioning, electric seat backrest angle adjustment, centralized lock control, electric adjustment of the exterior mirrors, engine preheating system in cold weather, and much more.

The range of engines included seven gasoline engines (from a 60-horsepower 1.4 liters, to a powerful VR6 12V volume of 2.9 liters / 190 hp) and three diesel engines (two atmospheric 64 and 75 hp and one turbocharged 90 hp). All gasoline engines were equipped with neutralizers. The most "modest" engine had a volume of 1.4 liters, and the most powerful one - 2.8 liters (with such a car it developed a speed of 225 km / h, and gained a "hundred" from a standstill in 7.6 seconds). The most powerful versions received a four-speed automatic transmission with an electrohydraulic drive, equipped with two programs - for economical and sporty driving styles, as well as disc brakes on all wheels (front - ventilated). All cars were equipped with power steering and brakes.

In 1995, a unique VW Golf appears with a 2.8-liter VR6 engine under the hood. The VR6 concept was to take a regular V6 and change the angle between the two cylinders by 15 degrees so that all the pistons fit under one cylinder head. The 2.8-liter VR6 put out 172 hp.

The developers paid special attention to safety - there were easily crushed volumes on impact, a reinforced frame, amplifiers built into the doors. The Golf III also featured airbags for the driver and front passenger, a 170mm deformable steering column, a foam-covered instrument cluster and steel rear seat backs. Plus, the developers of the Golf III gave their customers a 12-year corrosion protection guarantee.

Golf III sold 4.8 mil. copies and production ceased in 1997.

The "fourth" Golf, which began production in 1997, has become a more comfortable and expensive car with a rich list of options.

Without major changes, the designers managed to give the car a modern look. First of all, unusual lighting devices attract attention. Under the common glass cover are hidden two large headlights for low and high beam, as well as two small rounds for the direction indicator and fog lamp. The rear of the car has noticeably changed, the characteristic element of which is now the curved rear roof pillar, which passes into the wing. New sound-absorbing materials and new engine and exhaust system mounts were used. The Golf IV has four equipment levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and GTI.

Maintaining the overall proportions, the Golf IV is larger. Its length has increased to 4149 mm (+131 mm), width - up to 1735 mm (+30 mm), and the base - up to 2511 mm (+39 mm).

An impressive list of standard equipment: ABS, front airbags for the driver and passenger, two side airbags in the backrests of the front seats, disc brakes on all wheels (front ventilated), power steering with variable transmission ratio and steering effort, height-adjustable seat driver, air vent dust filter, rear head restraints, body-colored bumpers, radiator grille and exterior mirrors.

On request, the customer can install a navigation system with an LCD display on the center console. There are things that were not previously installed on cars of this class. For example, a rain sensor monitors the intensity of the wipers.

The range of engines includes six petrol and three diesel engines from 68 to 180 hp.

The fifth generation Golf was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2003. The car is built on the latest platform, which also formed the basis for the second generation Audi A3 and VW Touran. Together with it, the car received a multi-link rear suspension, and in addition - a new body, the rigidity of which increased by 80%.

The Golf V is 57 mm (4204 mm) longer, 24 mm wider (1759 mm) and 39 mm (1483 mm) higher. The rear passengers will be the first to feel the increase in space: legroom has increased by 65 mm, and the ceiling has been raised by 24 mm. Trunk volume increased to 347 liters.

The silhouette of the model is defined by five main elements: a belt line running under the side windows and noticeably rising up, a clear graphics of the side windows that form a single whole, embossed sidewalls in the area of the rear doors and pillars, the characteristic shape of the C-pillar, curved at an angle, and a swift roofline ... Completely redesigned front end with improved aerodynamics. The twin round headlights with laterally positioned direction indicators, like the Phaeton, are characterized by a characteristic “sharpening” towards the center of the front end. The raised surfaces of the fenders rise above the headlights. As an extension of the bonnet, together with the radiator grill, they form a V-shape.

The interior of the car is German-style, functional and very ergonomic: all functional levels are clearly separated, all buttons and switches are in place. Every detail has been refined and improved in comparison with the previous model. For example, the center console with the devices located on it: here the controls for the audio / navigation system and ventilation / air conditioning are located higher, so they are better visible and easier to operate.

The front seats have been completely redesigned for maximum comfort. The Golf V is the first car in its segment to offer an optionally available seat with an electrically adjustable four-mode lumbar support (integrated in the seat) or with an independent heater. In addition to the standard rear seat with a 60:40 split-fold backrest, an optional front passenger seat with a forward-foldable backrest extends the cargo area and allows the transport of long items.

Several engine and gearbox options are available for the Golf V. The diesel line is represented by two units: 2.0 l / 140 hp. and 1.9 / 105 hp. The choice of petrol engines is much larger: 1.6 l / 102 hp, 1.4 l / 75 hp, 1.6 l / 115 hp. The car can also be equipped with 1.4TSI units (three versions - 122, 140 and 170 hp), 2.0 FSI (two versions - 150 and 200 hp).

The Golf V will be offered in 3 basic equipment versions: Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline, differing in some trim details. Each of them already includes 6 airbags, ABS with brake assist and ESP.

In the summer of 2009, the presentation of the sixth generation of the car took place. The Golf VI measures 4,199 mm in length, which is 5 mm less than the previous model. On the other hand, the car is 20 mm wider at the same height. The entire appearance of the Golf VI speaks of its sporty character. The front end of the body attracts attention with a radiator grille and an elegant shape of the headlights. A pronounced line running from the headlights to the rear lights visually stretches the body and makes the car look lower.

In the interior, high-quality design elements delight the eye, including chrome appliqués, numerous decorative inserts in the dashboard and door trim. The white illumination of the devices that have received a new design is also pleasing to the eye. Climatic air conditioning system is included as standard.

The new Golf is equipped with a host of safety systems: next-generation ESP, anti-skid system, ABS with brake assist, MSR, trailer stabilization and ASR traction control. The manufacturer took care of the safety of both the driver and all passengers and installed seven airbags, one of which protects the driver's knees.

The power units of the car remained the same. The basis is a 1.6 liter engine that runs on gasoline and has a power of 102 horses. There is also a 1.39 liter turbo unit with 122 or 160 horsepower. And also the manufacturers took care of diesel engines with a 2.0-liter turbo unit, which develops a power of 110 or 140 hp. Power units traditionally for Volkswagen are characterized by low fuel consumption and develop excellent power. The new 7-speed DSG transmission provides comfortable gear changes without interrupting the power flow.

The sporty version of the Golf GTI is especially worth highlighting. Its 2.0 TSI engine develops 155 kW (210 hp), accelerating the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds (top speed 240 km / h). With such indicators, fuel consumption remains acceptable - 7.3-7.4 l / 100 km. The choice is also an automatic 6-speed DSG, or traditional mechanics.

The seventh generation Volkswagen Golf was officially unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The new generation, as usual, has become more spacious, lighter and more economical. Contrary to expectations, the chief designer of the concern Walter da Silva, known for his daring works, did not dare to radically change the design of the model. But even minor modifications were enough for the Golf VII to acquire modern features, become more attractive and dynamic.

Having retained the main features of the style by which this brand is recognized, the seventh Golf nevertheless changed its geometric dimensions. The car is 56 mm longer (4255 mm), 13 mm wider (1799 mm) and 28 mm lower (1452 mm) than its predecessor. The wheelbase was lengthened by 59 mm (up to 2637 mm), which made it possible to "stretch" the cabin by 14 mm and the legroom of the rear passengers by 15 mm. It has become more spacious in the shoulders: at this level, the interior has expanded by 30 mm. The seating position of the driver is lowered by 2 cm, the gas and brake pedals are moved apart by 16 mm and the steering angles are increased. The extended luggage compartment has added 30 liters (up to 380 liters), and its loading height has decreased by 17 mm.

The continuity of generations in the VW Golf family is a non-negotiable concept, but on the G7 you will not find a single common body panel with the sixth generation car. This car is really completely new. It has a more dynamic silhouette due to the reduced body height and slightly lengthened roof. It has more sharp edges, and the headlights with LED sections now look out from under the shifted "eyebrows" of the edge of the hood. The lowered roof not only gave the car a dynamic look, but also improved aerodynamic performance. Despite the increased body width, the drag coefficient is lower.

Thanks to the use of the latest modular MQB platform, Volkswagen designers managed to reduce the vehicle weight by 100 kg. The body was lightened by 23 kg, the engines and new seats became lighter, 3 kg were gained due to the changed wiring, and the suspension dropped another 26 kg of weight. German engineers fought for every gram, realizing that reducing the weight of the car would reduce fuel consumption.

Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Management Board of Volkswagen AG, challenged his employees to radically improve the model's fuel efficiency. As a result of this work, the car consumes 23% less fuel, and the Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI BlueMotion became the apotheosis of the struggle for fuel efficiency. This turbocharged diesel engine produces 110 hp. and a torque of 250 N * m with a five-speed manual gearbox consumes only 3.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. This result was achieved with the help of a start-stop system, installation of tires with reduced rolling resistance, and a braking energy recovery system. The height of the BlueMotion suspension has been reduced by 15 mm, and additional aerodynamic elements have been installed on the body to improve engine cooling and reduce drag. By the way, the drag coefficient of the VW Golf BlueMotion is only 0.27.

In addition to this power unit, the line of diesel engines is represented by motors with a capacity of 90, 150 and 180 horsepower. The TSI petrol family includes: 1.2-liter (105 hp), 1.4-liter (122 hp) and 1.4-liter (140 hp). A more powerful version of the model with the GTI prefix received a 2.0-liter gasoline turbocharged unit with a capacity of 220 horsepower. Transmission to choose from - 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed "automatic" DSG.

As for the suspension, the Volkswagen Golf of the seventh generation "McPherson" has two types of rear suspension in front: for modifications with engines weaker than 125 horsepower, a semi-independent beam is provided (it is more compact, lighter and cheaper), and for all other versions - a multi-link.

A lot of new electronic systems appeared in the car. The equipment will include adaptive cruise control with an automatic braking function, a circular video surveillance system, a lane tracking system, as well as a road sign recognizer and a driver fatigue detector. The classic "handbrake" will give way to electronic, and the steering will receive five modes of operation (Eco, Sport, Normal, Individual and Comfort). The list of options also includes an adaptive suspension. Whether an adaptive suspension will appear in Russia is not yet clear. But it is known that for our Golf market another "adaptation" will take place: the ground clearance will increase, and the settings of the elastic elements will also be revised.

The eighth generation Volkswagen Golf is presented on October 24, 2019 at the Wolfsburg Motor Show - the place of invention. The fans clearly did not expect such an update, because a lot of electricity appeared, including motors, and the level of equipment does not at all match with a relatively inexpensive car.

It is this machine that makes a major step towards digital technology and an electric future, the prospects of which have been constantly debated. Now it is useless to argue, since one of the most popular cars goes in this direction.

Electric exterior style

Cars equipped with electric motors have always tried to stand out in appearance. Here the manufacturer went for the same price, but it is not a fact that it was successful. A lot of controversy was caused by LED head optics, in the top equipped with iQ-Light matrix headlights with 22 LEDs. Its slender shape with convex shapes at the bottom looks cold.

The bumper of the new Golf 2019-2020 looks interesting, especially its lower black wide part with three horizontal lines. The edges of the upper two are painted in body color. This part will be slightly different in electrical versions. While fashionable aggression is supported by the side lines of the hood.

The architecture is guessed from the side. There is more detail, in addition to the classic strip dividing the door handles, the eye is drawn to the exit line from the bottom of the window frame. Swollen arches, a deep lower notch - everything is preserved.

The roof slope at the rear is clearly visible from behind. It ends with a spoiler integrated into the rounded trunk lid. L-shaped LED taillights lend the rigor that the name under the German manufacturer's logo maintains. A detailed inspection of the bumper attracts with the new design of the recess for the license plate, which creates a thin boot sill of the Golf mk8. At the bottom there is a plastic trim, into which the exhaust system is integrated with nozzles for a 4-barrel system.

Changed dimensions of the hatchback:

  • length - 4284 mm;
  • width - 1789 mm;
  • height - 1456 mm;
  • wheelbase - 2636 mm.

From an engineering point of view, the design has become better, with the drag coefficient being reduced to 0.275 Cx.

Down with mechanical buttons - interior

Yes, it will be difficult to get used to, because the usual mechanical buttons remained only on the 3-spoke steering wheel, which is correct - do not turn on something accidentally. And of course the mechanical alarm. Everything else, even the headlight control is touch-sensitive.

The main change in the interior is focused on the dashboard, which itself is stylishly shaped. There are two displays here: a 10.25-inch instrument panel display and a central multimedia display. The size of the second in the base (Discover Media) is 8.25 inches, the Discover Pro is optionally placed 2 inches wider.

The screen images of the dashboard of the eighth Volkswagen Golf are customizable, you can display analog gauges in different imitation styles there, or you can transfer the navigation map. The projection is optionally installed. Through the second screen, everything is configured, including the climate control installed in the base (optional 3-zone). The decision to abandon the usual buttons and move the climate to the screen is risky, let's see how convenient it will be, because before the car was a triumph of ergonomics. Perhaps the situation will be corrected by voice control from Amazon.

Coziness in the cabin is created by the contour suspension, which has from 10 to 32 colors (depending on the configuration). The presence of a large sliding panoramic roof is surprising. Music lovers will appreciate the optional Harman / Kardon system.

We changed the architecture of the Volkswagen Golf 2019-2020 seats, they became more comfortable, they received 2 positions of the memory of electric adjustments. There is little free space, which is to blame for the size of the car. All settings, even a music playlist, can be saved and transferred through Personalization 2.0 to your other Volkswagen car.

They changed the style of the central tunnel, but its main innovation is the Porsche-style joystick for controlling the modes of the gear button. The trunk has a pleasant 380-liter volume, there is an outlet, and folding the sofa 60/40 turns out to be 1237 liters.

Car2X, iQ.Drive and safety

Car2X is a data exchange system with cars and traffic lights connected to the same system. Within a radius of up to 800 meters, the car exchanges data on the traffic situation. If there is a traffic jam along the highway, then in the Travel Assist adaptive cryose control mode, the Golf VIII hatchback will automatically slow down and follow the flow.

Something similar is used by Mercedes-Benz.

iQ.Drive is a future autopilot system consisting of many sensors:

  • lane control;
  • blind spot analysis;
  • control of road signs and other sensors.

The car itself drives along the lanes, analyzes the situation through Car2X, but it forbids taking your hands off the steering wheel for more than 15 seconds.

The safety of the car has not yet been assessed. Obviously, all + 8 airbag systems will provide it with 5 stars.

A lot of electricity - characteristics

Naturally, the manufacturer has not completely switched to electricity, while it is only a hybrid. Electricity is the Volkswagen ID series. The base is equipped with simple TSI E211 Evo motors:

  • liter version with a version of 90 or 110 horsepower;
  • 1.5-liter unit with 130 or 150 horsepower.

It is optionally equipped with eTSI mild hybrid technology with a 48-volt starter-generator to help crank the engine and start. This provided a 10% reduction in fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle, and in theory will add reliability to the engine.

The list of diesel engines of the new Volkswagen Golf 2019-2020 consists of a 2-liter version with 115 or 150 horsepower. The full plug-in hybrid gets a 13 kW battery and electric motor. The main engine of the hybrid versions is the 1.4-liter TSI, producing 204 horsepower in the regular version, while the GTE model will receive 245 horses.

A pair of motors is a 6-speed BVM6 mechanics, or a 7-speed DSG robot. ETSI motors are only equipped with a robot. Front-wheel drive cars, top-end diesel can be taken on all-wheel drive. In the future, there will be sports versions of the R and GTI.

We built a novelty on the modernized MQB platform. The front suspension will always be on independent MacPherson struts, while the rear axle suspension will depend on equipment. Basic models will receive a torsion beam, and a 4-link independent structure will be installed in the top. Optionally, the hatchback will be equipped with adaptive DCC shock absorbers with three stiffness modes.

According to the available information, the Russian market will be heavily limited to motors. Volkswagen Golf received two engines of the previous generation - 1.4 TSI and 1.6 MPI. Perhaps the manufacturer is confident in the disastrous sales of the hybrid here.

Price

Car sales will begin at the end of 2019. Base pricing is expected to start at 22,000 euros (1.5 million rubles)... The name of the complete sets will change, and the equipment for such a price tag is surprising:

  • LED optics;
  • 16-inch wheels;
  • lane control;
  • automatic braking system;
  • two displays in the cabin;
  • interior fabric upholstery;
  • mechanical seat adjustment;
  • heated front seats;
  • Cruise control;
  • parking sensors;
  • driver fatigue sensors;
  • 2-zone climate control.

Conclusion: This is a truly global update that impresses with its equipment. We had to wait for the start of sales, only the changed technical filling for Russia is upsetting. And it is completely sad to realize that technical progress is not only the Volkswagen Golf mk8 that takes root for a long time, after which it is not imported by innovators. In Europe, the novelty will definitely become a sales leader.

Video

The Volkswagen Golf has become one of the most successful and best-selling cars of the German brand. The progenitor of the golf class got its name in honor of the warm Gulf Stream, in accordance with the brand's tradition of calling models either the names of winds or sea currents.

On this page you can see an overview of the Golf of the last few generations.

The WW Golf has been around since 1974 and has gone through seven generations since then. The release of the first Volkswagen Golf car was carried out in the USA and Canada under the Volkswagen Rabbit trademark, and in Latin America - Volkswagen Caribe. Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro worked on the design of the novelty. The Golf was available as a standard hatchback and convertible. Convertibles were produced between 1980 and 1993 until the third generation of the model appeared. The GTI version of the VW Golf was released in 1976, and the international magazine Sports Car Internawonal ranked this car as the third best car of the 80s.

The appearance of the second generation of Golf cars dates back to 1983. During its existence, more than six million cars in various modifications came off the assembly line of the German company. The SUV - Golf Country grade - has been produced in over seven thousand models. Volkswagen Golf II was produced not only in Germany, but also at factories in France, Great Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Japan and the USA until 1991.

In 1991, a new generation of Volkswagen Golf (second generation car) came out. This model was produced in Germany for six years in bodies such as a hatchback (three- and five-door), station wagon and convertible. First presented to the world public at the Geneva Motor Show, VW Golf began to be sold in Russia and the CIS countries since 1992, although its sales were not very large-scale. At the beginning of the new millennium, several tens of thousands of Volkswagen Golf cars were imported to us used from such European countries as Belgium, France, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden. The fourth generation VW Golf was produced in Germany from 1997 to 2004. At that time, more than four million Golf IVs were produced in body versions of three- and five-door hatchbacks, station wagons and convertibles. The model was driven by fours of 68 and 150 horsepower, fueled by diesel and gasoline. Not only the basic Golf equipment was available, but also four more variants - Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, GTI. The most interesting equipment of the Golf GTI was equipped with a turbo engine with a working volume of 1.8 liters, the Highline version - a V-shaped 2.3-liter five. In 1998, an all-wheel drive version of the 4Mowon was released with a V-six with a capacity of 204 horsepower and a volume of 2.8 liters, as well as a gearbox with all-wheel drive. While maintaining the general proportions of the Golf family, the car has become larger: the body has grown by 131 mm in length and 30 mm in width. The wheelbase of the VW Golf has also lengthened by 39 mm. It was then that a body made entirely of galvanized steel was first used.

The fifth generation Volkswagen Golf was created on the VW Group A5 (PQ35) platform. The VW Golf V V was first shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The sixth generation of the car was built on the basis of the VW Group A5 (PQ35) plaõorm, like its predecessor. The Germans showed this car in Paris in October 2008.

The latest generation VW Golf VII was also presented in Paris at the end of 2012. Now the VW Golf car (price from six hundred thousand rubles) is freely available from official Russian dealers. In the description of the models, you can see the cost of each Golf configuration. Of course, the price of the five-door Volkswagen Golf is slightly different from the cost of the three-door version.
