Test drive Opel Insignia. Ford Mondeo VS Opel Insignia: a million is not enough.

Test drive Opel Insignia. Ford Mondeo VS Opel Insignia: a million is not enough
Kolesa.Ru compared two well-equipped D-class sedans worth about 1,100,000 rubles, were surprised by the dynamics of one and the useful space of the other. At the same time, we looked at competitors from other classes.

Opel Insignia in Cosmo configuration with a 2.0 220-horsepower engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission costs 1,162,300 rubles. Ford Mondeo (pre-styling) in the Titanium Black configuration with a 2.0-liter 203-horsepower engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission will cost a little less - 1,071,500 rubles.

The configurations of the cars are similar, in Opel there is cruise control and a large color screen with the ability to display satellite navigation, while in Mondeo the display is not on the center console, but between the speedometer and tachometer, and the set speed control is not in the list of standard equipment. But in Ford, an electrically adjustable driver's seat is available, and in Opel they are offered as an option.

The showrooms of the Insignia and Mondeo are equally impressive, despite the fact that one car is, in fact, a relatively new model, and the other has been on the market for three years. However, the space inside Opel is organized in such a way that it seems as if the car envelops the driver more densely, but more comfortably, surrounded by the necessary tools. In Opel, the steering wheel is puffier with the correct nubs, and even flattened at the bottom, like in sports cars.

Ford ground clearance: 130mm
Opel ground clearance: 160 mm

As for the basic tools - radio and climate control, in Opel it is more difficult to see the right key and "isolate" it from the gray mass. In "Mondeo" on the contrary - the climate control buttons and the number-buttons on the radio are made of silver plastic, and they are much easier to recognize on a black background. Another thing is that on the radio itself, some keys are made small, and the inscriptions on them are read more than once.

I was pleased that both cars had audio control buttons on the steering wheel. In Opel, you can also control the cruise control from the steering wheel, and the on-board computer is controlled on the Mondeo steering wheel.

The engines of each of the sedans are much more powerful than a motorist who drives around the city every day and sometimes on the roundabout might wish. Two-liter turbo engines are rapidly taking sedans forward, but Opel does it, requiring literally a millimeter push on the gas. Insignia 20 hp motor more powerful than a Ford turbo engine, but it feels like the difference is 40-50 forces. However, in the updated range of Mondeo engines, the two-liter unit no longer produces 200, but 240 hp! Therefore, we advise horse hunters not to jump to conclusions ...

Acceleration to 100 km / h Ford: 7.9 s
Acceleration to 100 km / h Opel: 7.8 s

The Mondeo, in the version we chose, had a choice of suspension modes: "comfortable", "normal" and "sporty". Therefore, depending on the quality of the road surface and the degree of driving nervousness, the driver could choose what was more important to him: comfort, handling, or all equally. An interesting toy! And the test Insignia did not have the FlexRide system, which allows you to make similar adjustments to the Opel chassis. As a result, the "Insignia" steering left a double impression: on the one hand, the 17-inch wheels with a low profile harshly met the asphalt joints and other minor irregularities, on the other hand, and sports handling could not be called because of the noticeable rolls that appeared, as it seems, due to the increased travel of the suspensions - Russian cars have increased ground clearance.

Therefore, we recommend that potential Opel sedan owners install wheels with a higher profile and enjoy a smoother ride, or order cars with "European" ground clearance, if possible.

As for the Mondeo, its handling left a more pleasant impression. You can only blame the excessive sensitivity to ruts, being in which Ford now and then strove to dash to the side.

I liked the Opelev chairs a little more - in particular, thanks to the retractable knee support. And the lateral support of the back is quite pronounced here to keep drivers of different sizes. However, Ford is not inferior in terms of seating comfort, and thanks to the electric adjustments, it also provides a more convenient seat adjustment.

Mondeo welcomes back row passengers much more cordially. There is more room here than in the Insignia for both knees and head. In addition, the Mondeo has a much more spacious "glove compartment", and besides - with cooling. It is a pity that now is not the time of the year to appreciate this.

The view from the two cars is about the same, but the Mondeo side mirrors show a little more.

Ford Trunk Volume: 550 L
Opel trunk volume: 500 l

You can be sure that both top versions will not be the best-selling in the brand lines, largely due to the price - more than a million hundred thousand rubles for a D-class sedan - this is too much for wide-scale success. For this money, you can take not only almost any crossover in a good configuration, but also sedans of a higher class, such as the 1.8-liter turbocharged Skoda Superb or Nissan Teana with a Toyota Camry, assembled in Russia. True, the more modest dimensions of the D-class can be a trump card here: someone can refuse additional cubic meters / kilograms, which require increased energy consumption and additional parking space.

As for the choice of two test cars, the Ford Mondeo seems a little more attractive: it seemed a little better balanced in terms of comfort-handling and offers more space inside. Although Opel accelerates noticeably better and holds a straight line a little better. Insignia is the choice of the emotional person, while Mondeo is preferred by the pragmatists.

The vehicles were provided by the Russian representative office of Ford Motor Company and by Laura-Ozerki, an official dealer of Opel.

The official debut of Opel Insignia took place in 2008. This model came to replace the Opel Vectra, but compared to its predecessor, this car has become a little more spacious. In 2009, the Insignia was named European Car of the Year.
In Russia, official sales began in February 2009. The standard Insignia offered three trim levels: Cosmo, Essentia and Elegance, and five petrol engines to choose from, ranging from 1.6 to 2 liters and 115 to 220 hp.
In March 2010, a charged version of Insignia - OPC was officially presented to the Russian consumer. As well as the base model, the OPC was presented in three body styles - hatchback, sedan and station wagon with the same power plant for all three variants - a 2.8-liter gasoline V6 turbocharged with a power of 325 hp.

Opel Insignia 2013 is a confident continuation of the traditions of its predecessor on the Opel Vectra platform.
The interior of the new Insignia uses leather upholstery, and as for the exterior of this model, there are different colors for all body options. The strong and clean lines of the Opel Insignia attract attention at first glance. The sculptural precision of Opel's design language is brought to a new level in this model, while high-quality materials, thoughtful ergonomics and attention to detail create an atmosphere of well-being. Photos of the model are presented in the catalog of models on the website auto.dmir.ru.
Specifications Opel Insignia 2013 have also undergone changes. The main advantage of this car is a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 140 hp, which consumes 5.7 liters of gasoline, and at the same time saves consumption of about 2.0 liters for every 100 km / h.
This model also provides a more powerful 250-horsepower 2-liter turbocharged engine, and the package can include both an automatic and a manual transmission.

The standard equipment of the new Opel Insignia has electric front windows and heated mirrors, fog lights, air conditioning, on-board computer, Hot Shot system, CD audio system, 6 airbags, ESP, ABS. Additional equipment of the Edition modification includes 17-inch wheels, leather multifunction steering wheel, rear power lifts, cruise and climate control. For the Sport variation, there are sports steering wheel and seats, pedal pads, FlexRide, as well as alloy wheels and tires 245/45 R18. The Cosmo package includes an automatically dimming rear-view mirror, light and rain sensors, 2-zone climate control, and luxurious wood inserts are used in the interior design.

In the car club of the Opel brand on the website auto.dmir.ru you can find a lot of useful information regarding the maintenance and repair of Opel Insignia and other cars of the German manufacturer, and you can also leave your feedback and participate in interesting discussions by registering on the forum.

Replacing the Vectra in 2008, Insignia is already writing its own history: the 2013 restyling is not only a visible touch-up, but also a change in the line of motors. And also - the emergence of a version of the all-wheel drive station wagon with an increased clearance of 175 mm Insignia Country Tourer in the "meadow", where Volvo XC70, Subaru Outback and the like have been successfully "grazing" for a long time.

The application, I must say, is serious, at least in terms of price: starting from 1,741,000 rubles. - a small dirty trick to many direct competitors, given that there is no alternative (“mechanics”) to a 6-speed “automatic” in this case. For this money there will be a 2-liter turbodiesel (160 hp), slightly more expensive (1,806,000 rubles) - a 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine (170 hp), however, front-wheel drive.

4x4 versions - only with 2-liter engines: the same turbodiesel or its boosted to 195 hp. option, or with the most powerful gasoline 249-horsepower 2-liter unit.

The latter, respectively, is the most expensive - 1,976,000 rubles. without options (195-horsepower turbodiesel is 20,000 rubles cheaper). The standard equipment of the top-end configuration includes a rear electronically controlled limited slip differential, designed to increase directional stability on the highway and improve off-road ability.

For its segment, the interior is obscenely sporty and rich. Its front design resembles the cockpit of a racing boat. And the quality of the materials is quite premium

In my opinion...

Opelevsky Country Tourer should not be set in three quarters, as here in the photographs, but strictly in profile. Sit on the bench opposite and get aesthetic pleasure. Impossible to be handsome! Beak, swift - a sedan and no hold of a candle. And besides, if you lift the tailgate, it damnably reminds you of the Saab 900 so dear to your heart. By the way, the driving habits of this station wagon also revived in the memory the clan of Swedish "rocket cars" of the last generations before bankruptcy. The steering wheel with a thickened rim lying in the hand is superbly comfortable, the "thoroughbred" dense chassis, clear brakes without a shadow of lethargy ... And how energetic the turbo engine is when accelerating a heavy car!

In my opinion...

A body kit made of black matte plastic, encircling the car, means readiness for off-road sorties, or at least a primer. But the Insignia Country Tourer's claimed ground clearance is 175mm. That's just 15mm more than the regular Insignia Sports Tourer. However, even this modest figure is hard to believe - except to tear off the skirt under the front bumper. But, I suppose, this will happen at the very first exit from the asphalt, because with a car length of almost 5 m and with such overhangs, you can forget about geometric cross-country ability. Volvo XC70 and Subaru Outback with a clearance of 210 and 200 mm, respectively, are much preferable for owners of a summer cottage in a godforsaken outback. The main trump card of the "lifted" Insignia is four-wheel drive. Together with excellent handling, it fully reveals the character of the car in the rain or on a winter road. True, the difference in the operation of the shock absorbers in the Sport and Tour modes is almost not felt - apparently, the considerable weight of the car affects. As a result, this is just a convenient practical station wagon that is pleasant to drive. Only one drive for opening the trunk to different heights is worth something! Although it's a shame that in the city it is not possible to hang the front bumper over any curb.

In my opinion...

In the kaleidoscope of test cars, few leave a truly vivid impression. So, Insignia Country Tourer did it. Despite the fact that I am not a fan of Opel, I did not find any obvious flaws in behavior on the road or equipment within the framework of the price and purpose of this model. Everything is more than worthy: it looks and rides richer than you expect. And the ergonomic progress in comparison with the pre-styling Insignia is obvious. There, I was annoyed to a large extent by the center console with a huge number of small buttons that were difficult to hit blindly. Apparently, I'm not the only one so finicky, and now the Insignia has quite sane climate and multimedia control panels. But the main thing, perhaps, is not this. The wide range of adjustments of the driver's seat, its shape and density of padding make it really comfortable to sit behind the wheel for a long time, which is important in long-distance autotravels.

With regard to driving performance, everything is very balanced here. Quite rather big car unexpectedly easily follows the informative gas pedal, as if it "writes" the trajectory set by the steering wheel on the high-speed arc, but at the same time it practically does not make the driver "sweat" when driving. The driving process happens as if by itself, and even road irregularities, thanks to the comfortable energy-intensive suspension, remain in a different, outside the cabin, reality. So is everything perfect? Of course not. There would be a car, but there is always something to complain about. In this case, I don't want to do this. In general, I liked this car the way it is, and I forgive her little things ...

Outcome

The heirs of Adam Opel do not eat their bread in vain and honor the precepts of the founder of the brand. Opel Insignia Country Tourer is another vivid proof of this - this car is made with care for the driver and passengers. And this, perhaps, is more important than the super-prestige of the brand, expensive "show-off" and the desire of the manufacturer to make it the coolest. In this case, the key word is "balance". These are very decent driving characteristics, comfort, design, equipment level and materials. The price and that, against the background of competitors, is sane, although there is no need to talk about wide availability.

The Insignia replaced the Vectra in the mid-range and outperformed its predecessor in all respects. Insignia is a completely new level of quality, design and technology. Initially, the car was offered only with a sedan body, a little later a hatchback and a station wagon appeared.

The car looks solid and at the same time swift and aggressive. Smooth curves, harmonious lines and a sloping roofline emphasize the dynamic appearance of the car. The protruding wheel arches give the vehicle a muscular yet graceful look. Expressive headlights and a robust radiator grille form a single dynamic structure that emphasizes the uniqueness of the body shape. The developers of Opel Insignia have made a lot of efforts to reduce aerodynamic drag (the coefficient is Cd = 0.27) and the level of noise from air currents when the car is moving. The sophisticated cascading design of the bonnet creates a unique play of light and shadow and emphasizes the dynamism and emotionality of the body. And the distinctive wing-shaped headlights make this car unique in its own way.

In addition to the sporty body design, the car has a class-leading interior. The car is offered in three finishes. The interior of the Elegance trim level is trimmed with dark brown plastic with titanium-like overlays with a spectacular mesh texture. The Sport version has received black plastic and seats upholstered with "non-slip" fabric in a large rib. In addition, this complete set is distinguished by the lining, painted under the piano lacquer. The top-of-the-line Cosmo can be recognized by the wood inlays and the leather / fabric combination.

The excellent basic equipment can be supplemented with a large number of new systems: the Opel Eye electronic assistant, as well as the Adaptive Forward Lightning (headlight turning radius - 15 degrees, additional lights - 90 degrees). The Insignia does wonders with its headlights. They can shine both as a low beam, and as a distant one, and in seven different modes. In order not to blind oncoming drivers, to better see the side of a country road, to illuminate a turn or switch to city mode, the driver does not need to do anything. Several sensors and a small video camera suspended from the rear-view mirror will transmit the necessary data to the powerful processor, and the computer will select the required operating mode for the xenon headlights. The same camera constantly transmits the image of the road and the traffic situation to the computer, which, by processing the video image, is able to isolate from it clean and well-read traffic signs and road markings. The car will inform the driver about the recognized signs with pictograms on the dashboard, and if the driver violates the instructions, the Insignia will remind the driver of the error with a sound signal.

The standard modification is completed with a 1.6-liter petrol "four" with a capacity of 115 hp. The next stage is the 1.8 l / 140 hp engine. Then there are two turbo engines - 1.6 l / 180 hp. and 2.0 l / 220 hp. The top-of-the-line for the Insignia is the 2.8-liter V8 Turbo with 260 hp Presented in the line of power units and diesels: 2.0 l / 110 hp, 2.0 l / 130 hp. and 2.0 l. / 160 hp. All engines comply with Euro 5 standards. In the basic version, the model is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Six-speed "automatic" - an option.

The Insignia also has an all-wheel drive version (the basic version comes with front-wheel drive), where the torque is transmitted to the rear axle by the Haldex4 system. On all-wheel-drive versions, the chassis integrates FlexRide with Dynamic Stability (AST), which forces the car to adapt to changing driving conditions and allows the driver to adjust the characteristics of the suspension and other systems from hard sport settings to soft comfort settings.

Opel Insignia scored the maximum number of points during the tests and received the title of the safest car in the annual EuroNCAP crash tests.

The official display of the updated Opel Insignia took place at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car is presented in three versions - a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback and the Insignia Sports Tourer station wagon. German designers have meticulously restyled, giving the car a more modern, solid and stylish look.

There were no cardinal changes in the model's appearance. The headlights with LED filling have narrowed - the stylish and complex geometric pattern in the bowels of the headlights looks original. The radiator grille has become wider and has lost the chrome strips - now they are glossy black. The front bumper, having become larger, acquired round foglights on black inserts with exquisite chrome corners, a solid aerodynamic body kit. Opel designers claim that the minimum drag coefficient they managed to achieve in the updated car is an impressive 0.25.

The stern of the updated Insignia has got a new massive bumper and original lampshades for dimensional lighting with LED lamps and a branded chrome trim. The rear lights of the station wagon, despite their simplicity and compactness, look stylish. And here is the sedan's aft lighting equipment, supplemented by a chrome strip.

The facelift did not affect the overall dimensions of the body. For the sedan and hatchback, the dimensions are 4830 mm long, 1856 mm (with exterior mirrors 2084 mm) wide, 1498 mm high, 2737 mm wheelbase. The 2014 Insignia Sports Tourer station wagon is larger: 4908 mm long, 1856 mm wide, 1520 mm high, with a 2737 mm wheelbase. The ground clearance (clearance) of the Insignia versions for the Russian market is 160 mm.

For painting the body of the Opel Insignia in 2014, twelve enamel options are offered: basic - Summit White (white) and Royal Blue (blue), metallics - Sovereign Silver (light silver), Silver Lake (dark silver), Magnetic Silver (silver), Luxor (dark blue), Mahogany (dark brown), Carbon Flash (black), Power Red (red diamond), mother of pearl - Waterworld (dark blue), Asteroid Gray (gray asteroid), Mercure Red (violet red) ...

Depending on the configuration, the car is equipped with tires ranging from modest 215/60 R16 or 225/55 R17 on steel wheels of 16-17 radius, to low-profile 245/45 R18 and 245/40 R19 on light alloy wheels of size 18-19. The charged version of the Opel Insignia OPC rests on the ground with 245/35 R20 wheels with R20 light-alloy forged wheels.

The lineup has a cross-country wagon called the Country Tourer. This modification differs from the usual Insignia in the ground clearance increased by 20 mm to 180 mm and all-wheel drive, the paintwork in a circle is protected by lining made of black plastic, which, moreover, give the car a more "all-terrain" look.

The interior of the updated Opel Insignia has also changed quite significantly, mainly this fact concerns the front of the cabin. The car is equipped with a new multifunctional steering wheel with a rim cut from below, the dashboard and front panels have been completely redrawn, the configuration of the center console has changed. If earlier many complained about the pile-up of elements, then Insignia 2014 no longer has this drawback: all the elements are located so that the devices are in sight, and there is no feeling of space compression.

The abundance of buttons was replaced by two 8-inch color touch monitors. The first is installed in the instrument cluster and provides an excellent picture; a huge amount of information is displayed on the display, ranging from the radii of the speedometer and tachometer, to the information of the bot computer, settings of auxiliary functions and pictures of the navigator.

By the way, the navigation system has changed and is now included in the basic package. The picture has become more informative, there is a display of the traffic lane and division into lanes, the exit signs have become clearer.

The second touchscreen is located on the center console. He is responsible for the settings of the multimedia system with voice control, air conditioning, displaying navigator maps and pictures from the rear view camera. The climate control unit is distinguished by minimalism of buttons and ease of control.

The only pity is that such a dashboard and center console are available only in the richest trim levels. The basic version offers the classic three "wells", in the mid-range versions a 4.2-inch on-board computer display is installed.

Now it is possible to order as an option a system for recognizing road signs, tracking blind spots (with its help, it was possible to minimize the problem of poor visibility in small side mirrors) and keeping a lane. The new cruise control, which operates at speeds of up to 180 km / h, is able to completely stop and then accelerate the car. The picture is completed by a rear-view camera, which was not previously included in any configuration.

The luggage compartment of the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer station wagon can hold from 540 to 1530 liters of cargo, depending on the position of the second row seats. The five-door Opel Insignia Hatchback is capable of taking on board from 530 to 1470 liters. The trunk of the sedan has the most modest capacity from 500 to 1015 liters.

The suspension was improved, new levers and springs were installed and the shock absorbers were reconfigured. In versions with FlexRide adaptive suspension, the control program has been modified. The handling of the car has significantly improved, the steering has become more informative - there is still a hydraulic booster, but the steering column and rack have been improved.

New diesel and gasoline engines have appeared under the hood. The new Opel Insignia 2.0 CDTI diesel engine, depending on the degree of boost, produces 120 or 140 hp, the engine is equipped with a start-stop system and, when paired with a 6 manual transmission, consumes only 3.7 liters of fuel when driving in mixed mode. A 2.0-liter unit with a capacity of 163 hp is also supplied to the Russian market. The top diesel is now 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI (195 hp and 400 Nm of torque).

The new 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine produces 170 hp. at 260 Nm. The 2.0-liter petrol engine, after revision, became 30 hp. more powerful - 250 liters. with. and 400 Nm of torque. The engines are equipped with a start-stop system and are paired with 6 manual transmissions or automatic 6 automatic transmissions. We hasten to clarify that the most powerful gasoline engine for the Opel Insignia OPC 2.8 V6 Turbo (325 hp) will remain in the production program.

The basic equipment of the Opel Insignia 2014 is equipped with an air conditioning system, an audio system with a color LCD screen and a USB interface, a headlight washer system, and heated seats. This car also has other advantages: adjustable rear-view mirrors, stabilization system and crankcase protection. If we talk about the more expensive Cosmo equipment, then it is complemented by a parking assist system, a rear view camera and an IntelliLink multimedia system.
