The compact first-generation Audi Q5 crossover has been produced in five factories around the world since 2008. Nine years is more than a respectable age for a model by today's standards. Need a replacement. And at the end of September 2016 at the International Motor Show in Paris, the Germans presented a completely new Q5 2018-2019. In the markets of the EU countries, it became available early next year, and the Russians were asked to wait until April. This is due to the need for separate certification, including the installation and adaptation of the Era-GLONASS system, which is now mandatory - otherwise it would simply not be allowed for sale.


From now on, the model is completely finished with the "German registration" of the model - the new product is no longer produced in Germany, but in Mexico, 200 kilometers from Mexico City, where the construction of a completely new plant has recently been completed. Of course, Audi swears that build quality won't drop. It seems to be true - there is absolutely nothing to complain about, even with careful study.

Appearance

As practice shows, cars with a revolutionary design do not appear under the Audi brand. After all, a marketer's mistake can cost billions of euros, or even more. Therefore, the brand is being led in a different way. The corporate "face" is there, and it is quite clearly guessed. True, the flip side of the coin is that all models are similar to each other - starting from the tiny one.


A large panel of a false radiator grille with a chrome edging, the headlights are "blown out" - but this is actually a reduced copy of the "big sister" - a large crossover. The stern of the Audi Q5 2018-2019 is also very similar. The lights are made at the same time as the fifth door, but there are additional "lights" in the bumper - this is a mandatory requirement of the law so that the car could be seen in the dark, even if the back door is open. True, the place for a license plate in the front bumper spoils the look a little, but we are not in America, where you can drive without it.

The salon can be described, perhaps, in three words - strictly, stylishly, functional. There are several colors and materials to choose from for the seats, as well as the top and bottom of the front panel.

Not a hint of dullness and boringness, although, no non-standard solutions were also noticed - everything is at hand exactly where you expect to find it. You can even find references to - especially if you order the S-line "sports" package.


The instrument panel can be either conventional or virtual (in the form of a display). In any case, the graphics are verified and perfectly readable.

At the top of the front panel is a large multimedia screen. It is made in the form of a separate "blotch", as if the tablet was simply attached separately. It seems that they really decided to add this element at the last minute, when the design had already been approved, and it was too late to change the plastic parts for others, negotiating with the subcontractors. Control is carried out by pressing directly on the display, or using a small touch panel on the central tunnel.


The climate keys of the 2018-2019 Audi Q5 are ordinary, with a pleasant pressing response. But near the armrest there is a place for induction (contactless) charging of smartphones. This is an increasingly common "feature" now.

There is plenty of room for the head and legs of all three riders. However, the average passenger will not be very comfortable - he is hampered by the protruding central tunnel, so he has to spread his legs wide. But for those two who sit at the edges - great, because the molding for them is close to ideal. The sofa can be equipped with a lot of adjustments, both cushions and backs.

The volume cannot be called gigantic. 550 liters if the second row of seats is pushed all the way back, or 610 - maximum forward. This is 10 liters more than its predecessor. There is no choice for buyers yet. Only 2.0 TFSI petrol engine with direct fuel injection. Its power is 249 hp. This value for Russia was specially reduced by 3 forces in comparison with European counterparts in order to reduce the amount of transport tax that the owner will pay annually.

The gearbox is an uncontested seven-speed "robot" S-Tronic with two clutches ("mechanics" in this segment are of little use to us, although it is still present in the price lists for the EU).


The drive in the Audi Q5 is only full. This is a new ultra system with a mass of electronics, which saves 0.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

Other engines are also available in Europe - these are two turbodiesels - 2.0 TDI (150, 163 and 190 hp) and 3.0 TDI (286 hp). Moreover, the car with the most modest diesel engine in the "base" is front-wheel drive. But for Russia, only the 190-strong modification was left, and even then, its entry into the market is somewhat postponed.

At the top of the gamut is the V6 3.0 TFSI version (354 hp), but it is already called the SQ5.

Options and prices


The Russian price tag starts at almost 3 million rubles. For this money, a car is offered in black or white (for metallic they ask to pay 63 thousand, and for mother-of-pearl - almost 180 thousand rubles).

The basic configuration of the Audi Ku 5 2018-2019 is present:

  • if there is another 50 thousand, then the climate control can be made three-zone;
  • matrix headlights are very fashionable now. Moreover, dynamic ("running") can become, as only the rear, and all 4 "turn signals" - the price of this changes significantly (84 and 134 thousand rubles, respectively).

And also - several types of car parking systems, a head-up display, various electronic "assistants", more solid "music" with the logo of the famous Danish company Bang & Olufsen, a heated steering wheel, and much more. According to biologists, a cloned organism is not an absolutely exact copy of a donor of genetic information. Indeed, look at the lean Audi Q3 - it would seem, where is the Volkswagen Tiguan? Rather, it's a miniature Audi Q5!

So whose genes are dominant here - and will the cloned Q3 be a long-liver?

You look at the Q3 from behind - and you see the Q5. Down to the smallest detail, including the shape of the stylish LED turn signals in the tail lights. But from the front ... "Ku-treshka" has a deliberately serious look and abundant eyeliner, like a schoolgirl going to a modeling agency for the first time - little in common with the confident indifference of a mature woman in the face of Q5.

And if we compare the Q3 with the Tiguan, then Audi is more fit - primarily due to the short overhangs. Because of this, the trunk became 56 mm shorter, and together with the dashing slope of the roof (people from Audi stubbornly remember the coupe style), this reduced the volume for luggage with the rear seats folded down from 1510 to 1365 liters. And if Tiguan's asymmetrical "halves" of the rear sofa have longitudinal adjustment, then Audi no longer has it, and the folded backs do not form a flat platform. For passengers, the losses are not so significant: minus folding tables on the backs of the front seats and 22 mm less headroom.


In terms of the chassis, the Audi Q3 differs from the Tiguan much less than the Skoda Yeti: if the Audi and Volkswagen McPherson front suspension arms are aluminum, then the Skoda ones are stamped from steel. The rear multi-link is identical for all three cars: only the characteristics of the springs, shock absorbers and silent blocks differ


The "naked" body weighs 301 kg. Most of it (74%) is made of high-strength steel (highlighted in pink), and 13% of the parts (reinforcements for the bottom, engine shield, center tunnel and sidewalls) are made of various grades of ultra-high-strength steel (red, orange and brown parts). But the driver is in the center of the universe. You sit like a glove in any of the standard or optional chairs! Ergonomics are standard: I would only like to raise the climate control panel higher.

The real highlight of the interior is the fold-out multimedia display, like the old BMW X3 and Z4. Let it be devoid of an electric drive, but it is large enough (seven inches) and contrasting (resolution - 800x400), and when folded, it visually lightens the interior. There is much more "air" here than in Tiguan! A less massive front panel also improves visibility, especially for short people. By the way, the front pillars in Audi are thinner, and the side mirrors are much larger than Tiguan ones - one can only complain about the tiny embrasure of the fifth door window.


The interior of the Q3 is a fusion of the solidity of the Q5 and the simplicity of the A1. Emotionally, it is lighter than a Volkswagen, and the feeling of quality is better, although on closer examination of the soft plastic there is no more


The optional MMI infotainment system on the Q3 is exactly the same as on the Audi A1: a 6.5-inch or 7-inch flip-up display, two SD card slots, a 60 GB hard drive, of which a third is reserved for music, and connectors in the armrest for connecting an audio player and a smartphone

The body of the Tiguan has excellent strength and rigidity (torsional - 34 thousand newton meters per degree!), But still heavy. And in the Audi Q3, the body is not only 141 mm shorter and 70 mm lower - due to the aluminum hood and trunk lid (compared to steel, this gave a gain of about 10 kg) and thanks to the wider use of ultra-high-strength steel, it was possible to lose 74 kg! At the same time, all five doors, like those of Volkswagen, can be easily opened and closed when hung diagonally.

From the Tiguan line of engines, the Q3 now lacks only a 1.4-liter gasoline engine - according to Audi minders, it does not have enough traction for a premium crossover. Under the hood, there can still be one of a sweet couple of two-liter turbo engines in two boost options: either a gasoline TFSI (170 and 211 hp), or a diesel TDI (140 and 177 hp). What is noteworthy, less powerful options are aggregated exclusively with a six-speed "mechanics" (the drive can be either front or full), and more powerful ones - only with a seven-speed "robot" S tronic and all-wheel drive. A multi-plate electro-hydraulic clutch that transmits torque to the rear wheels - Haldex of the fourth generation, S tronic gearbox - seven-speed DSG with wet clutches: everything like Tiguan.


Regardless of the modification, the Q3 is absolutely passionless when cornering

I started my acquaintance with the version that is predicted to be the most popular in Russia: four-wheel drive, S tronic and a gasoline engine with a capacity of 211 hp. Quick start, energetic acceleration, quick and imperceptible transition to the second, third ... And that's all. You cannot drive faster than 120 km / h in Switzerland, even on the autobahns, and on rural roads - a maximum of 80 km / h.


The Audi drive select system now changes not only the resistance of the electronically controlled shock absorbers, the degree of assistance of the electric power steering, the shift strategy of the preselective gearbox and the response to the gas pedal, but also the climate control algorithm and the angle of rotation of the adaptive headlights. The choice between the four modes is carried out either by the drive select button on the center console or via the MMI menu

The engine start button is literally at hand - on the left under the climate control unit. There is no spring-loaded key slot that duplicates its functions.

The Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI cracks down on these limitations quickly and unceremoniously like a good drill from a professional electric drill with a brick. The soundtrack is similar. I quickly got tired of “drilling” in Drive mode: I was annoyed by both the damping of the accelerator and the manic craving of the “robot” for higher gears. The Sport mode for a ragged rhythm is much better suited: reactions to the gas are faster, and the box stops playing in super economy. But it is better to walk calmly in a Swiss style in the Efficiency mode. It is activated either by pressing the drive select button in succession or via the MMI infotainment system menu. And it's not even that the electronics are activating a lean strategy for using the A / C compressor. The highlight of "efficiency" - in coasting with full throttle closure: both clutches open. Audi engineers calculated that this saves a little more fuel than in engine braking, that is, forced idle - less loss of speed, which requires a shorter acceleration later.


None of the presentation cars had a folding front seat - unlike the Tiguan, this is an option for the Q3

Moreover, when coasting, lightly touch the brake pedal, and the box will immediately engage a gear - and one at which the engine speed will fall into the zone from 2500 to 3000 rpm, and engine braking will continue, even if you remove your foot from the brake. Therefore, there is no separation from the car, as well as the fear of being left without gear on the descent. A very intelligent algorithm!

It failed only once: I was coasting ... uphill. When the car almost stopped, the "robot" tucked in the first gear - nervously, with a jerk. But the preselective boxes of the Volkswagen-Audi concern did not like the combination of snail speed and high load before.



The Q3 can have the same optional self-parking system as the Tiguan with the Yeti. The car is able to stand in a row both perpendicularly and parallel (the pocket should be only 80 cm longer than the car). But in two of the four cars tested in Switzerland, the car parker worked inadequately: every now and then he taxied right into the parked cars!

For passengers, the Q3 is only slightly less spacious than the Tiguan.

And now, after five minutes of off-road exercises, a soft amber of superheated ATF fluid and a prickly aroma of burnt friction linings appeared. Audi is already accustomed to dismissing reproaches: “Our customers hardly ever drive on difficult terrain”. Is this why the ground clearance in comparison with the Tiguan was reduced from 200 to 170 mm? This passport value, by the way, is 15 mm less than the actual clearance of the BMW X1. Maybe Q3 handles as much better as it is lower?


The Tiguan became the benchmark for driving behavior four years ago. Nimble, sensitive, understandable. Even the creators of the BMW X1 admitted that they tuned the chassis with an eye on Volkswagen.

Ingolstadt decided to revise the characteristics of all elements of the Tiguan's suspension, including silent blocks, - "so that the Q3 has the character of a real Audi." What happened?

All cars, with the exception of one, pre-production (more on it later), in Switzerland were with optional electronically controlled shock absorbers. Four modes of the Audi drive select system, in which not only their characteristics change, but also the settings for the electric power steering: Efficiency, Comfort, Auto and Dynamic. On the straight line - no problem in any of them. But as soon as gentle turns appear, Comfort and Auto begin to alarm: the steering wheel is treacherously light! And if the bends happen abruptly, the desire to “ignite” and disappears altogether: laziness is added to the power disunity “on the steering wheel”. Yes, yes, the Q3 is in no hurry to drive into slow corners!

In the Efficiency and Dynamic modes, the steering wheel is pleasantly heavy, but the reactions do not become more lively. How so? Wheels - 18-inch, tires - pure asphalt Pirelli Scorpion Verde, rolls - small, chassis - "neutral". But the character is persistent, Nordic.

The gear ratio of the electric power steering on the "rail" is 16.4: 1 for Audi and 15.4: 1 for Volkswagen. This makes the Q3 less responsive to the steering wheel than the Tiguan.


This seven-speed wet clutch preselective gearbox debuted on the Tiguan's Euro version last year. To save fuel, Audi engineers taught it to open both clutches in certain driving modes. But, unfortunately, they have not yet cured the "preselective" from the main ailment - overheating of the clutches on the road.

The key lies in the steering mechanism. If the Tiguan has a gear ratio of 15.4: 1, then the Q3 has it increased to 16.4: 1. Acute reactions not in line with the character of Audi? Or a third of the target audience of Q3 are not men under the age of 35, but still the beautiful half of humanity?

Ride smoothness, like handling, has not four, but two gradations. Efficiency and Dynamic are actually "Tiguan" mode: the suspension is energy intensive, resilient, but not uncomfortable. And Comfort and Auto are "Yeti": microroughnesses are smoothed out much better, and medium and large potholes are transmitted to the body just a little softer.

With the "mechanics" and the engine derated to 170 hp, the Q3 drives just as impassively. Acceleration is only slightly slower, the gears are shifted easily and clearly. But "mechanics" and "turbo" are like a dolphin and a mermaid: to be honest, they are not a couple. “You never know what the return will be,” I want to repeat after Walter Röhrl.

The trunk of the Audi is also almost like that of the Tiguan. There is no place for a stowaway in Euro versions: under the cover either underground, or an organizer with a subwoofer. But they promise to put a spare tire in cars for Russia

Diesel 140 hp caused the same emotions, multiplied by a lower recoil and a narrower operating range: it starts to "drive" only at 1700 rpm, and finishes - after only "two hours" on the tachometer dial. The same engine, but boosted to 177 hp, has the same grumpy character. But paired with a briskly changing gear "preselective" leaves a completely different aftertaste. The car is perceived to be no less alive than the most powerful petrol one! And given the fact that in terms of acoustic comfort, all versions of the Q3 are hardly distinguishable (turbodiesels do not pester with a roar at high revs, and Volkswagen Otto engines rattle at idle no less than diesels), I would prefer heavy fuel.

Also because the integral character of the Q3 does not change, in contrast to the Skoda Yeti soplatform, which in the diesel incarnation is much tougher. It is also curious that the S line sports suspension lowered by 20 mm with stiffer springs and shock absorbers also does not make significant adjustments. A little more solidity, a little more liveliness, but still not a Tiguan bully.

The only version that can put Volkswagen on both paddles is the Q3 2.5 TFSI! Its release is scheduled only for next year, but for now it is a pre-production car. Under the hood - deformed to 310 hp. "Turbo five" W28 from Audi RS3 and reinforced S Tronic. Suspension - with normal shock absorbers without magnetorheological sludge. It is, of course, tougher than the S line, but here it is in the suit! Fiery acceleration, "dead" brakes and a monolithic chassis that instantly fulfills your commands.

Other versions can be safely recommended to the remaining two-thirds of the target audience: married couples with grown children (over 10 years old) and those over 50. But it seems to me that this will be the circle of Q3 buyers only in the main market, in Germany. By the way, there the initial front-wheel drive diesel version costs 29,900 euros, only 275 euros more expensive than a similar 140-horsepower Tiguan. And in China, and even more so in Russia (China and I, by the way, share the second place in Audi's priority list), the audience will be different. We even have a women's car label stuck to the BMW X1.

Orders with execution in October are already accepted now, but we will have diesel Q3 only next year. Russian prices start from 1 million 279 thousand rubles for front-wheel drive, "mechanics" and a 170 hp engine, which is only 25 thousand more expensive than the 150-horsepower rear-wheel drive BMW X1 sDrive18i. And the all-wheel drive Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI (211 hp) with a "robot" will cost no less than 1 million 525 thousand. Overpayments in comparison with the Russian top version of the Tiguan, it is definitely worth it. Curl your fingers: image, design, quality of materials, visibility, dynamics ...

And chances are that the Tiguan clone will live longer. In genetics, the opposite is usually the case. Remember the first cloned sheep, Dolly, who passed away at just over five years old, while ordinary sheep live for 14-16 years? As it turned out, the cloned organism carries the burden of the donor's genetic mutations, which means both his diseases and signs of aging.

But, for example, the Audi A3 has already outlived its donor, the fifth generation Golf, by three years. The same fate awaits Q3. Three years later, the Tiguan of the second generation will appear, and the life cycle of Q3 at this moment will be at its peak!

Visually, it may seem that the Audi Q3 can be closely related to the sibling A3. In fact, the model is built on the PQ35 platform, which formed the basis for the rather spacious Volkswagen Tiguan.

A crossover from Ingolstadt, despite the fact that it has the same wheelbase and is 2 cm wider - shorter by 4 cm and lower by 8 cm. The result? It is in vain to look for the vastness of Tiguan. The rear sofa offers much less legroom. In addition, traveling in the second row can be uncomfortable for tall passengers. Even if they do not rest their knees on the front seats, the crown of the head will surely catch on the ledge on the ceiling. Not the most comfortable and rear seat landing due to the small doorway.

The boot capacity of the Q3 is also slightly less than in the Tiguan, by some 10 liters. The total capacity is about 460 liters. Surprisingly, there is a budget rigid shelf resting on supports. In the premium segment, you would rather expect a curtain that rolls into a roll.


The Audi Q3 is stylistically similar to the older Q5. Particularly attractive is the powerful grill, paired with nearly rectangular headlights flanked by LED line lights. The model stands out with a large angle of inclination of the rear window.

In the tested model, off-road accents are emphasized by the "Offroad Audi Exclusive" exterior package. It contrasts with the typically sporty 255/40 R19 tires on attractive alloy wheels.

The interior of the small SUV is not as impressive as the rather massive and short body. You can even venture to say that, unlike other models and competitors' offerings, it is a little modest. Although the quality of the finishing materials is simply impeccable.


A very clear division into zones responsible for climate (by the way, very convenient to use) and multimedia is striking. There is no large and comfortable MMI knob well known from other Audi models. Instead, a tiny "spinner" is used on the center panel. Information is displayed on a small but easy to read foldable display. A big plus for an excellently playing BOSE audio system, a minus for the manufacturer's persistent refusal to place a USB connector on board its cars. Instead, we get a hard drive. One of the most attractive elements of the interior is the fully adjustable heated seats in Fienappa leather.
