The history of the creation of GAZ-3308

The first production copies were assembled in 1997. The truck was supposed to replace the GAZ-66, which could not withstand the competition of modern transport. In the new car, engineers have tried to preserve the best qualities of the previous generation.

The 3308 was first talked about in the late 1980s. Then they wanted to seriously modernize the 66th model. In the 90th year, the Gorky Automobile Plant presented the GAZ-3301, which was intended for military purposes and worked on a new diesel engine. The collapse of the Soviet Union prevented mass production; the old model remained on the assembly line.

After the collapse of the USSR, the development of GAZ-3308 Sadko continued. The new military vehicle was required to increase its strength and improve all technical characteristics. The main change was the design of the cab: the designers abandoned the cabover structure, as this reduced the level of comfort and made the car less safe. Some elements of the new cockpit were taken from the 3309th version.

In 1995, a prototype of the GAZ-3309P was presented. After some modifications and re-passing the tests, the commercial production of 3308 was launched in 1997. After equipping the Russian army, the machines began to be supplied to the CIS countries.

The truck is shipped to several countries:

  • Syria - In 2005 received 114 copies for testing. In 2007, the transport was adopted by the local army;
  • Armenia - several small parties are in military service;
  • Ukraine - since 2014, vehicles have been performing various tasks of territorial defense battalions;
  • Belarus - used for military purposes in the early 00s;
  • Kazakhstan - regularly used by the National Guard.

The first update was released in 2003. The changes were minimal, both externally and technically. The line of engines has been replenished with a new D-245.7 turbodiesel. In 2013, they began to produce cars with a YaMZ-53442 power plant, which met Euro-4 standards. In the 14th year, the world was presented with "Sadko Next" - a modernized model capable of carrying 3 tons.

Technical characteristics of GAZ-3308

The GAZ-3308 car meets modern technical requirements. He is able to move off-road and overcome obstacles of different sizes. In recent years, the enterprise has been producing the GAZ-3308 chassis, which makes it possible to install various modules on it.

For equipping, three types of power units are used. 117-horsepower diesel engines from the Minsk or Yaroslavl factories or a gasoline engine from the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant. The most popular is the gasoline option.

The gasoline model is made on the carburetor type, has eight cylinders arranged in a V-shape. Power - 122 horsepower. Many owners complain that it is not able to lift vehicles uphill when fully loaded. Diesel power plants deliver even less power. If the truck is not loaded to the maximum, with any engine it moves acceptable. For comfortable control, a power steering was added to the design.

The downdraft carburetor has two chambers. The liquid heater maintains the required temperature of the working mixture. The dry type filter works thanks to the regulated air supply. Forced air circulation is carried out in a closed liquid cooling system.

The dry clutch is of the friction type. Equipped with a hydraulic drive. For gasoline versions, a peripheral spring is installed, for diesel models - a diaphragm spring. All examples have a five-speed gearbox. All are synchronized except for first and reverse gears. The cabin has a lever for engaging an overdrive. The mechanical transfer case has a drive to the front and rear axles, there are direct and lower stages.

The service brake system is double-circuit, supplemented by a pneumohydraulic drive. Braking is carried out on different axles. The locking system is automatic; the design includes a modulator and a pneumatic amplifier. There are brake cylinders in each channel. The spare brake is provided by both circuits. The parking brake is mechanically operated.

The drive acts on both axes. The diesel version weighs 6.3 tons, the gasoline version - 5.95 tons. According to experts, for its class GAZ-3308 Sadko has a lot of weight.

The special structure of the suspension, the basis of which was taken from the 66th version, allows you to quickly overcome road sections with soft soil and mud. A big disadvantage for the car is the ground clearance (31.5 centimeters), because of it, it often gets stuck. The length of the car is 6.25 meters. The driver has the ability to overcome climbs up to 31 degrees, water obstacles up to 1 meter deep and carry cargo with a mass of no more than 2,000 kg.

GAZ-3308 modifications

The cabin is made using all-metal technology, has two doors and is designed for two people. The number of chassis add-ons exceeds 100 pieces. The most common are tanks, equipment for rescue services, gas and oil tanks.

The platform is made using all-metal or wood-metal methods. The set includes a structure for installing an awning; additional grilles can be installed on the sides. The audible alarm is used to contact the body and the passenger compartment.

The "Huntsman" configuration differs from the basic cabin capacity - up to 5 people. Due to the increase in its length, the length of the body was reduced, which is used to transport people and goods of various types. Such a complete set is used to equip a residential module if it is used by repair crews. Short body versions can transport loads up to 1 ton.

The onboard modification provides passengers with a high level of safety. Above the sides, seat belts are fastened with which passengers can fasten. Benches for people are attached to the side walls and can be folded. For lighting, a small lamp is used, mounted on one of the arches of the awning structure.

The frame of the truck is stamped, equipped with front side member extensions. Disc wheels have single tires. The device has an automatic tire pressure monitoring system.

In 2014, the plant presented the GAZ-3308 Taiga-VIP. The transport capacity has been improved and the capacity has been expanded to 7 people. Such a cabin allows you to use a car with modules of various farms that contain the necessary equipment and tools.

Instances of the last years of release have a built-in ladder for moving to the roof. A roof rack can be installed there to transport large, but not heavy items. The package includes two winches. "Taiga" is equipped with wiring, so there are separate lighting and sockets in the cabin and in the van. They are powered by a diesel generator. There is a dump truck. Loading and unloading can be carried out from three sides. The mass of the transport is slightly more than 8 tons, and the carrying capacity is 4.5 tons. The GAZ-3308 engine of this type has 122 forces, runs on diesel fuel and is equipped with four cylinders. Average fuel consumption is 22 liters per 100 km.

The latest generation motors are environmentally friendly and comply with Euro-4 standards. They pass up to 500 thousand kilometers without major repairs. Story

In the late 1980s, due to the replacement of the GAZ-66, there were attempts to unify the production of an existing car again. So, in 1990, the GAZ-3301 model appeared, built taking into account the requirements of the military. Also, a distinctive feature of this car was the presence of a diesel engine. However, the collapse of the USSR and the decline in state purchases put an end to the promising machine. In view of this, the production of "shishiga" (GAZ-66) was continued.
Nevertheless, the development of the new machine continued. Taking into account the softened requirements of the military, and also in view of the practical experience of using a cab above the engine on the GAZ-66 with all its inherent disadvantages (high danger for the crew when blown up by a mine, the great complexity of engine repair, a low level of comfort and poor ergonomics in general), and most importantly, a sharp reduction in government purchases for the army and the national economy, the management of the plant returned to the bonnet layout, but the design of the all-wheel drive chassis remained consistent.

The first prototype of a new all-wheel drive truck was created by the Gorky Automobile Plant in 1995 under the GAZ-3309P index. Serial production of the model, which received the industry index GAZ-3308 and its own name "Sadko", began in December 1997.

In the Russian army, the 2.3-ton GAZ-3308 truck replaced the GAZ-66-40 model with a cab above the engine. The GAZ-3308 uses a modified (other fenders with enlarged wheel arches) cab from the GAZ-3309, as well as drive axles and a transmission similar to those used on the GAZ-66-40.

In September 2000, GAZ-3308 was offered for export to the armed forces of Ukraine.

Since 2003, Sadko has been mainly equipped with the MMZ D-245.7 turbodiesel (since 2005, the Euro-2 ecological class, since 2013, the D-245.7E4, the Euro-4 ecological class).

In February 2013, a version of GAZ-33088 "Sadko" with a YMZ-53442 Euro-4 turbodiesel appeared.

In June 2014, GAZ presented a new version with the unofficial name Sadko-Next with a carrying capacity of 3 tons, together with a new version of the GAZ-3309.

The GAZ-3308 truck, equipped with an all-wheel drive, replaced the GAZ-66. The Gorky Automobile Plant assembled several modifications of the car, differing in the power unit and the cab, and also supplied the chassis for mounting various equipment.

Design and specifications

The car is built according to the bonnet scheme, equipped with a 124-horsepower V-shaped gasoline engine or in-line 4-cylinder compression ignition engines, which develop 117-149 hp. The performance characteristics of diesel engines depend on the modification of the installed turbocharger and fuel equipment. All units have a liquid cooling system with forced circulation and temperature control by means of a thermostat. The electrical circuit of the machines is built on a 1-wire principle, the operating voltage is 12V (for petrol versions) or 24V (for diesel engines).


For fastening the leaf spring suspension and units, a frame consisting of spars and connecting crossbars is used. The machines are equipped with 1 or 2 fuel tanks connected into a single system. The filling volume is 105 liters of liquid in each tank.

Only a manual 5-speed gearbox is used, working in conjunction with a 2-speed gearbox that distributes torque between the axles. The design of the driving axles includes bevel differentials, the front axle is equipped with steering knuckles with hinges of equal angular speeds. Chassis modifications designed for the manufacture of dump trucks and fire trucks are equipped with a separate gearbox for driving attachments.

On the basis of the truck, small-scale cars are being built with increased comfort and improved technical characteristics. An example is the GAZ-3308 Taiga, equipped with a 7-seater cab and a special van that can be used as a mobile workshop.

A prototype Sadko 6x6, designated Borulan, was built on the basis of a vehicle with 2 axles. The machine is equipped with a 156-horsepower MMZ diesel engine, the rear wheels are mounted on semi-elliptical springs mounted inside the frame. The middle axle is not a through axle, therefore, 2 propeller shafts are installed to drive the rear wheels.

Sadko

The GAZ-3308 Sadko chassis served as the basis for the construction of several small-batch models of shift buses. The KaVZ plant built 19-seater cars with an original body that combined the driver's cab and the passenger compartment. Other enterprises mounted separate superstructures on the chassis, isolated from the driver's cabin. A separate modification is an army van of the KUNG type, designed for the transport of military personnel and the installation of various equipment.

The GAZ-33088 Sadko modification is distinguished by the installation of the YaMZ-534 diesel engine, which provides improved traction and dynamic characteristics. The plant offers trucks of a standard size, as well as a version extended by 1100 mm. The standard equipment includes a centralized tire pressure regulation system.

Countryman

The GAZ-33086 Countryman onboard truck has been produced since 2005. A 122-horsepower diesel engine MMZ D-245, which complies with Euro-4 standards, was offered as a power unit. In early releases, there was a 117-horsepower engine that met the Euro-2 requirements. The use of engines running on heavy fuel has reduced fuel consumption to 14 liters per 100 km of track (at a speed of 40 km / h).


The machine, supplied in the form of a chassis, has a carrying capacity of 4410 kg, a flatbed truck can carry 4000 kg of cargo. The braking system includes drum mechanisms with a hydraulic drive divided along the axes. An anti-lock braking system is installed on part of the GAZ-33086 Countryman trucks. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster, which allowed to increase the speed of movement on unpaved roads. When driving on the highway, the flatbed truck accelerates to 90 km / h at full load.

Huntsman

GAZ-3308 Huntsman is distinguished by the use of a 2-row cab with additional hinged doors, designed to carry 5 passengers. The cab has an increased length of 1150 mm, which has led to a reduction in platform dimensions. The car was equipped with a gasoline engine, developed by the Technospas company from Nizhny Novgorod.


Later, a modification of the GAZ-33088 Huntsman-2 appeared, created by the specialists of the Chaika Service company. The difference was the use of a YaMZ-534 diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger. With a working volume of 4 cylinders of 4.43 liters, the unit develops a power of 135 hp.

Boar

The Vepr truck, created by order of the army, is based on the Sadko chassis, shortened by 400 mm. The machine uses an all-metal body equipped with 3 or 5 hinged doors. The design feature is the absence of a partition between the driver's cab and the rear of the passenger compartment.


Passenger seats are installed along the sidewalls of the body, the central part of the cabin is used to carry cargo or install a table. When using a 3-door body, passengers are embarked and disembarked through the aft door; a handrail is installed on the outside. The passenger version of the car has a capacity of 12 people. When used as a cargo-passenger all-terrain vehicle, the cabin has space for 5 people and cargo weighing up to 1500 kg.

BKM based on GAZ is used for drilling wells with a diameter of 150-800 mm and a depth of up to 10 m in soils of any category. Small overall dimensions of the unit allow maneuvering in tight passages. The equipment is installed on machines with different cab models for 3 or 5 people.


The crane-boring machine is equipped with a mechanical lifting mechanism designed to move loads weighing 1.25-3.5 tons. The design allows lifting various loads to a height of up to 15.5 m. The machines use outriggers with a hydraulic drive. The drilling rig based on GAZ-3308 is equipped with a gear pump driven by a transmission and spool valves that control the operation of additional equipment.

Operation and repair manual

The operating instructions contain the following recommendations:

  1. Use diesel fuel suitable for the ambient temperature.
  2. The duration of 1 cycle of the starter should not exceed 20 s.
  3. It is forbidden to use the starter to move the vehicle.
  4. It is not recommended to start a carburetor machine equipped with a catalytic converter by towing.
  5. A diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger must run for at least 3 minutes before stopping.
  6. The inclusion of emergency indicators on the instrument panel or the buzzer sounding indicates a malfunction of the all-terrain vehicle.
  7. It is not allowed to operate an autonomous heater with drained coolant and a closed tap of the main heater.
  8. When towing a faulty vehicle, place the transmission levers in neutral.


The repair manual for GAZ-3308 includes a number of items related to maintenance:

  1. Carry out a daily inspection of the car, which allows you to detect damage to components and assemblies.
  2. Routine maintenance is carried out in accordance with the recommendations after 5 and 20 thousand km (TO1 and TO2, respectively). If the all-terrain vehicle is operated on dirt roads, then work is carried out every 3 and 12 thousand km.
  3. In spring and autumn, an extraordinary service is performed, combined with TO1 or TO2, aimed at replacing fluids.

  5. The supply of fresh grease is carried out using an injection syringe until the substance appears from the joints of the lubricated unit.
  6. When switching to another brand of engine oil, it is recommended to flush the crankcase with a special fluid. Mixing and adding oils from different manufacturers is not allowed.

Attempts to start work on a car, which was later named 3308 gas, were back in the late 80s of the last century. The fact is that the famous one had been produced by that time for about 30 years and, with all its advantages, had time to become pretty outdated. The Armed Forces have significantly reduced the volume of purchases of equipment, and had to focus on the civilian consumer. The design was complicated by the poor and turbulent 90s. The plant almost went bankrupt at all, but was able to stay afloat. In 1995, GAZ presented the first prototype of a new car under the index. Two years later, the serial (or rather, small-scale) production of the new item started.

The designation was brought in line with the standard, and in addition, the car received the name Sadko, which later took root among the people. Thanks primarily to the impressive ground clearance, the car looks impressive. Engine and transmission

The basic version still received an eight-cylinder V-shaped, like the one that was equipped with its predecessor. The manufacturer also did not change - the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant remained it. But the index of the unit is ZMZ-5231.10, and not ZMZ-66-06. The working volume increased from 4.25 to 4.67 liters, and the power was raised by 10 horsepower - up to 130. But the truck needed it - after all, the gasoline engine is very voracious.

For the army, this is not a problem, but civilian buyers were forced to "get out" by installing gas equipment. And the diesel engine pulls much better, because 130 "petrol" forces are still not enough for a car with a maximum gross weight of almost 6.5 tons.

Of course, you can install the desired power unit with your own hands (and there were many such options), but the GAZ plant itself established mass production of 3308 trucks with a heavy fuel engine only in 2003. The Minsk turbodiesel MMZ D-245.7 with a working volume of 4.75 liters and a capacity of 112 horsepower was “registered” under the hood. It is also called "tractor", because it was originally intended for the tractor Belarus. But in the absence of other suitable alternatives for the requirements, it was this MMZ that also chose the ZIL for its Goby.


The engine turned out to be very successful, reliable, unpretentious, inexpensive. Imported motors of this class are much more expensive, and cars with them cannot be supplied to the army. There was, however, an attempt by GAZ to attach Steyr to all of its cars, but it absolutely turned out to be too complicated, and its price is much higher than that of the "tractor".

Later (in 2005 and 2013, respectively), the Minsk unit was modified to comply with the environmental standards Euro-2, and then Euro-4, otherwise the production of cars with it would have been banned in Russia according to the then changes in the legislation.

Since that time, as the modification with a diesel engine went into mass production, it became the main one in the 3308 Sadko range. Its declared fuel consumption in "ideal" conditions is 16.8 l / 100 km.

On real roads, the car consumes more, but, all the same, it is quite economical, taking into account the volume of the fuel tank of 105 liters, and "long-range". Those who lack such a supply of fuel install additional containers, fortunately, there is space for them on the frame.
Compared to the petrol version, the diesel service intervals are shorter and the costs are significantly lower.

In 2013, a version with another Russian-made turbodiesel was presented - this is the YaMZ-534. The fact is that the Yaroslavl plant is a part of the GAZ Group, so there is no longer a need to buy engines “on the side”. A lot of money, as well as time and effort were invested in the development of the engine. For this, Austrian partners from AVL List GmbH were invited.

The in-line 4-cylinder unit already in the "base" meets the Euro-4 standards by using the exhaust gas recirculation system EGR (without adding urea), but the design provides for the possibility of simple modernization for Euro-5 and even Euro-6. Power - 135 hp, but this figure can be changed, including software.

GAZ-33081 is a diesel version of the popular domestic car GAZ-3308 "Sadko", a long-term leader in the class of medium-tonnage all-wheel drive trucks on the market of Russia and the former Soviet republics. The design of the GAZ-33081 cab and body practically does not differ from the basic model of the Sadko family, and from the basic GAZ-3307 platform, too. Its main feature is a diesel engine, not a gasoline engine. In fact, GAZ-33081 became the direct heir to the legendary military off-road truck GAZ-66.

Scope and versions of GAZ-33081

Nevertheless, the possibilities of using the “66th” descendant are much wider than purely army ones. GAZ-33081 is suitable for use in a wide variety of areas of the national economy. Its element is off-road. He is able to work effectively in the harsh climatic conditions of the Far North and Siberia; in rugged desert, forest and mountainous areas.

This is why this relatively cheap and unpretentious truck is widely used in the oil and gas industry; in geological expeditions; modern agricultural enterprises; in hunting and forestry; medical, fire and rescue services; in various structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Penitentiary Service of Russia.

To date, more than a hundred types of special superstructures have been developed for the GAZ-33081 car, among which are tank trucks, hydraulic lifts and vans for various purposes. Some of the most popular are shift buses and gaiters, mobile repair shops.


From the very beginning of its serial production, at the very end of the 90s, on the basis of diesel "Sadko" they began to produce not only flatbed and curtainsider trucks, but also cars with conventional and isothermal vans, simple and telescopic hydraulic lifts, hook loaders, drilling and crane machines , evacuators, loader cranes, vans for transporting prisoners, mobile laboratories and other special equipment. By the way, the complete list of which in the manufacturer's price list is simply amazing.

A successful version of the GAZ-33081 truck was its modification "Huntsman-II" - with a two-row five-seater cab, developed by the production enterprise "Chaika-Service". In this four-door, "cargo-passenger" version, the rear row of seats can be replaced with two berths if necessary. That allows you to use the truck for long-distance cargo transportation, or for the delivery of repair teams and their subsequent work in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

The modification of the GAZ-330811-10 Vepr, which is a shortened version of the GAZ-33081 truck with a modular all-metal body, in a passenger or cargo-passenger version, also received some fame.

About the history of the GAZ-33081 model

Despite the many years of successful use of a brutal all-terrain truck in the Soviet Army, it was replaced in the eighties of the twentieth century at the Gorky Automobile Plant, the development of a new all-wheel drive vehicle started.

Its result was the launch into mass production of a car, which was freed from the main drawbacks of the 66th: inconvenient access to the engine for repair; more than harsh conditions for the driver, in a cab with bad, moreover, the ergonomics of the workplace and controls.

The platform of the fourth generation rear-wheel drive trucks of the Gorky Automobile Plant was taken as a basis -. This family, which replaced and, was developed during 1982-1986 and entered the assembly line in 1989.

However, the destruction of the USSR and the subsequent upheavals of the 90s in Russia contributed to the fact that these promising developments reached serial production only in December 1997.

In the 2000s, the market situation developed in such a way that the economic feasibility of using gasoline engines on medium-duty trucks steadily declined and, as a result, practically disappeared. And here are the trucks running on liquefied gas; on diesel fuel turned out to be very viable in the new conditions. This predetermined the success and distribution of GAZ-33081 in the market of Russia and the former Soviet republics.

In a simplified sense, the GAZ-33081 car can be called a constructive mixture of the basic models GAZ-3307 and GAZ-66. At the same time, the frame, chassis and reinforcement were taken from the good old 66th, and the cab and body were taken from the 3307th. The engine is equipped with liquid cooling, direct fuel injection and turbocharging with intercooling of charge air. The option of optional installation of a pre-heater is possible, which will simplify engine starting at extremely low temperatures.
