Diagnosis of clutch malfunctions

Lada Kalina is equipped with a "dry" clutch with one disc and a central pressure spring. The disc is connected to the clutch pedal (PS) using a cable. Interaction is carried out using a cable, which is weak point in the node. Adjustment is carried out using a ratchet mechanism, which is a threaded rod and a control nut.

Over time, the linings wear out, on the disc, they become thinner. Much wear depends on the driver's driving style. Those who like to tear from their place, the node will not last long and will need to be repaired. The ratchet mechanism removes the insufficient thickness of the pad by tightening the cable. This happens by turning the release fork, it forces the spring located in the bushing to compress. The spring acts on the lug locks, releases it and thus tightens the cable.

Thanks to ratchet mechanism the length of the cable is automatically adjusted. But, despite this, sometimes it is necessary to adjust manually.

Exist clear signs, by which you can diagnose whether it is necessary to adjust the clutch assembly, namely:

  • problems when shifting gears;
  • extraneous sounds when squeezing out the PS: creak, friction, clicks;
  • the clutch is not disengaged / not fully engaged;
  • poor cravings;
  • jamming when the vehicle is moving.

In the video by Sergei Tsapyuk, the reason for the taut pedal release and how to troubleshoot the problem are analyzed.

With the help of simple actions, you can identify other signs indicating that you need to adjust the clutch on the Lada Kalina:

If the above symptoms are found, then it is necessary to either adjust the clutch or replace it.

During the operation of the car, the driver is faced with a number of problems that indicate that it is necessary to adjust the clutch on Kalina. Due to the peculiarities of the mechanism installed on these VAZs, even with wear of the clutch disc linings, the clutch release drive cable automatically lengthens.

This allows the motorist to adjust the pedal travel only occasionally, in the event of a malfunction. But even in these cases, it is possible to get by on your own, without resorting to the services of a car service.

The device and operation of the Kalina clutch

The unit belongs to dry-type mechanisms, single-disk, with a central pressure spring. Switching off by pressing the pedal is carried out by a cable equipped with a ratchet. This part allows the cable to automatically change its length depending on the wear of the disc pads and ensures a constant, backlash-free fit of the clutch with the release bearing to the basket.

The pressure plate together with the diaphragm spring are enclosed in a casing. All together, it is customary to call the clutch basket. A driven disc is located between this mechanism and the flywheel. Its hub is connected to the input shaft of the gearbox.

When you act on the pedal, the cable is stretched by turning the fork. Its lower sleeve is pressed into the clutch housing, the upper one is removable. The force when turning the fork through the clutch and clutch release bearing is transmitted to the pressure spring and pressure plate, disengaging the mechanism.

When the pedal is released, the clutch must fully transmit engine torque to the transmission. The depressed pedal normally completely disconnects it from the engine. Signs of the need to adjust the clutch on Kalina can be considered:

  • excess full speed pedals (normally - 146 mm from the lowered position to the stop on the floor) - adjustment of the clutch cable is necessary;
  • when the pedal is depressed, the gear is engaged with a grinding or crackling sound - the clutch does not turn off completely;
  • when the engine is started, a howling in the crankcase is heard - wear release bearing;
  • jerks at the beginning of the movement indicate insufficient smoothness of the clutch engagement;
  • when driving in 3-4 gears, when you press the gas, the engine speed rises quickly, and the acceleration slows down - the discs slip, possibly due to wear of the linings or insufficient cable length.

As a rule, it is necessary to correct the operation of the clutch after its repair in order to bring the automatic adjustment mechanism into working condition.

This operation may also be required if the Kalina has not been used for a long time or worked in the winter.

In such cases, the wear compensator may lose some of its functions and cannot cope with adjusting the cable length.

Correction of the mechanism

When various extraneous sounds when disengaging the clutch while the vehicle is in operation, check the clearance on the drive fork and, if necessary, correct it. Adjust the clutch cable in the following order:

  1. Remove the air filter and pull the cable out to the maximum length by the tip.
  2. Using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the tip and the fork. Normally, this distance should not deviate from the value of 2.7 mm.
  3. If any discrepancies are found, turn the leash on the thread until the desired value is established. Release the end of the cable: at the same time, it should press firmly against the fork.
  4. Press the clutch pedal 3-4 times to activate the automatic cable length correction, measure again.

Repeated measurement may show a deviation from 2.7 mm again. In this case, you need to repeat the steps described in order to adjust the length of the cable.

The clutch on Kalina can make squeaks and noises even after adjustment. They can be caused by rubbing of the tip leash against the fork. In this case, noise comes from the engine side and is eliminated by applying grease to the point of contact of the cable end nut and the fork. Others possible reasons- the creak of the pedal, the grinding of the cable when rubbing against the casing - are eliminated by applying grease. In some cases, the clutch pedal sensor may be the source of the noise.

Troubleshooting Sensor Problems

This mechanism is installed only on the Lada Kalina clutch with electronic pedal gas. Its function is to control the engine modes when changing gears, starting movement, etc. Sensor malfunctions are reflected on the engine controller with the designation "error 0830", while the Check Engine lamp comes on.

Physically, malfunctions are felt as jerks of the car when changing gear, when the engine is running at low speeds, or a sudden increase or decrease in engine speed if you press the pedal. It is impossible to adjust the clutch sensor on Kalina, it will have to be completely replaced.

This part is located above the pedal, under the steering column. When buying a new one, you should choose the sensor 1118-3720015 (for Kalina, Priora, Grants). Replacing it is a little complicated by the inaccessibility of 2 self-tapping screws, on which it is attached to the pedal bracket.

To remove the sensor, you need to pull out the wiring block holder from the hole on the pedal bracket. Then disconnect it from the wiring harness dashboard... Using a screwdriver, remove the spring hook from the holder and unscrew the sensor mount on the pedal bracket (self-tapping screws).

The clutch sensor is removed with its holder, released and replaced. Assemble in reverse order, starting with the sensor fixing on the holder rods.

It is not very difficult to adjust the Lada Kalina clutch or replace the sensor. When carrying out work, the engine must be turned off. If after adjustment measures extraneous noise and other malfunctions have not disappeared, you should contact a car service for diagnostics and possible repair with the replacement of clutch discs.

To be more precise, we will talk about clutch cable adjustment on Lada Kalina. The Kalinovsky cable is much easier to adjust than the same cable on the 9th, 10th, 15th. All because of the installed auto-compensator, which does the job for you. So if the auto-compensator does everything by itself, then why go there at all? Let's figure it out.

The fact is that for the correct operation of this machine, it is necessary to correctly install the clutch cable. The correct setting is determined by measuring and correcting several distances. The first is between the clutch fork and the plastic cable end. We pull the cable as far as possible, holding on to this plastic tip and measure the gap with a caliper - it should be 27 mm (like in a book). To get to the plug, you need to remove the air filter. If the distance is not the same, we adjust it to the norm using the same plastic tip.

The second thing you need to pay attention to is the cable rod from the side of the passenger compartment. The distance of its end to the plastic "frame" should not exceed 3 mm, but at the same time some gap should remain. It is located on the clutch pedal itself.

You can install the gaps either from the side of the hood or from the passenger compartment, where it is more convenient for you. Having set one gap, the second should turn out automatically.

What does the incorrect adjustment of the Kalina clutch lead to?

If the clearances are not set correctly, then the autocompensator may not work correctly, it may not work at all if the gap under the hood is too low (10mm and below). The release bearing can also howl.

For example, I had a clutch release bearing buzzing in 4th, 5th gears. After the correct clutch cable adjustment the hum was gone. There are also many questions about what the clutch takes at the very end. This is, in principle, normal. Structurally, the grip on Kalina begins to seize in the second half of the stroke. Therefore, setting it up at the beginning of the move means making constructive changes to its work, which is not desirable.

The vehicle is equipped with a dry single-plate clutch with a central pressure spring. Clutch release drive - cable, backlash-free, with automatic cable length adjustment mechanism.

The clutch consists of a basket (pressure plate assembly) and a driven plate. The basket is a steel casing in which a pressure spring and a pressure plate are installed. The pressure plate is fixed in the casing on three pairs of elastic plates. From the side of the casing, the disc is pressed by a diaphragm-type pressure spring. The clutch basket is six bolted to the flywheel and covered by an aluminum crankcase. A driven disc is installed between the pressure plate and the flywheel.

Friction linings are riveted to both sides of the driven disc. To damp torsional vibrations at the moment of engaging the clutch, a damper with six cylindrical springs is integrated into the driven disc. The hub of the driven disc splines with the input shaft of the gearbox.

The clutch pedal is suspended from an axle and is attached to the body through a bracket. The upper part of the clutch pedal is designed as a two-armed lever. A finger is made at the end of the lever, to which the clutch release drive cable is connected. The connection is made through a special ratchet mechanism that adjusts the length of the cable (see below). Therefore, during the operation of the car, it is not necessary to regularly check and adjust the travel of the clutch pedal. This mechanism also ensures that there is no play in the clutch release actuator.

Clutch release cable: 1 - spring fixing bracket; 2 - automatic cable length adjustment mechanism; 3 - bracket for the shell of the body; 4 - rubber cover; 5 - cable sheath; 6 - corrugated cover of the lower end of the cable; 7 - threaded (bottom) cable end

The cable is laid in a metal sheath with a polyethylene coating. The upper end of the shell has a bracket that is attached to the pedal assembly. The vertical surface of the bracket also serves as a limiter for the clutch pedal travel. A rubber plate is installed on top of it. The lower end of the cable sheath is fixed in a bracket mounted on the gearbox housing. The lower end of the cable is covered with a rubber bellows. The cable is connected to the clutch release fork lever through a plastic leash screwed onto the threaded cable end.

The clutch release fork pivots in two bushings. The upper sleeve is plastic, removable, and the lower one is bronze, pressed into the clutch housing. When the fork turns, the force is transmitted to the petals of the compression spring through an angular contact ball bearing (release bearing). The bearing is put on the clutch release clutch, through which it contacts the fork of the clutch release drive. The constant engagement of the fork and clutch is ensured by a U-shaped spring. Due to the absence of a gap in the clutch release drive, the clutch is constantly pressed against the pressure spring petals, while the release bearing operates continuously. The bearing is lubricated for its entire service life. The clutch release clutch moves along a guide sleeve that is put on the input shaft of the gearbox and is attached to the clutch housing with three bolts.

During operation, the lining of the driven disk will wear out. To compensate for this wear, an automatic cable length adjustment mechanism is built into the clutch release drive. As the pads wear, the clutch release fork pulls the cable by turning. This compresses the spring located in the bushing of the adjustment mechanism and pressing the clamps of the toothed cable end. The retainers release the tip, as a result of which it is freely pulled out of the cable driver, compensating for the wear of the disc pads. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the upper link moves up. In this case, the clamps squeeze the toothed tip of the cable, preventing it from moving out of the body of the adjustment mechanism.

Cable length adjustment mechanism:

1 - bushing; 2 - leash; 3 - toothed (upper) tip of the rope; 4 - cable end clamps; 5 bracket (with clutch pedal travel stop)

Note. On cars of the first releases, a spring was installed inside the leash.

The design of the clutch unit in the Lada Kalina model needs adjustment over time cable drive... This need is dictated by the fact of natural abrasion of the linings on the driven disc and by the design features the mechanism we are considering. During operation, the cable stretches, which also implies the need for adjustment. And many car owners are wondering: how to adjust the clutch?

The adjustment procedure itself is not a complicated action, therefore it is available to most owners of Lada Kalina. In this article, we will show you how to adjust the clutch.

Clutch device and functionality

The node belongs to a cohort of mechanisms based on dry friction. The clutch mechanism in this model is single-disc and assumes the presence of a pressure spring, which is structurally made in the form of an integral part of the basket. The cable is used to disengage the clutch. This action is activated by pressing the advised pedal assembly. The cable transmission has a ratchet device that allows it to change its length in autonomous mode in accordance with the level of wear of the driven disc linings. This decision allows you to ensure a tight fit of the release bearing to the spring petals. A driven disc is located inside the basket, through which rotation is directly transmitted from the flywheel to the input shaft of the transmission unit.

Pressing the designated pedal forces the cable to stretch, causing the special fork to rotate. Its lower bushing is integrated into the clutch housing. The upper element of the part, which is also presented in the form of a sleeve, is removable. During the rotation, the fork, through the clutch and release bearing, acts directly on the petals of the pressure spring, which in turn opens the driven disc with the flywheel. Thus, the process of disengaging the clutch is realized, which is necessary to ensure the ability to change gear in a mechanical transmission unit.

When the pedal is fully released, the disk, which is firmly attached to the flywheel, transmits full torque to the primary transmission shaft.

In some cases, deviations from the correct functioning of the clutch assembly are observed. Among the signs that characterize this negative phenomenon, there are such moments:

  1. Increase in pedal travel when its value exceeds the regulated 146 mm.
  2. Engaging the gearbox when the clutch pedal is fully depressed is accompanied by characteristic grinding of shafts in the transmission, which indicates that the clutch is not fully disengaged.
  3. The launch and subsequent operation of the Lada Kalina engine is accompanied by a howl coming from the clutch housing (wear of the release bearing).
  4. The beginning of the movement is characterized by jerks and insufficient clarity of switching steps.
  5. Moving at 3-4 speeds, the owner presses the accelerator and observes the following picture: revolutions power plant rise cheerfully, and acceleration is accompanied by lethargy. This indicates "slipping" of the clutch, that is, a loose fit of the disc to the flywheel, caused by increased wear of the linings or excessive tension in the cable.

All these signs overwhelmingly hint to the owner of the need to adjust the cable drive. How do I adjust the clutch? You should also lean towards such a procedure after replacing the clutch mechanism, losing its functionality by the compensator (lack of the ability to autonomously adjust the length) or long downtime of the Lada Kalina car.

Correcting the operation of the mechanism

All of these factors that cause deviations in the effective operation of the clutch mechanism require an immediate adjustment of the position of the cable drive in the Lada Kalina 2. Adjusting the clutch involves performing such a series of manipulations.

  1. We dismantle the case air filter to provide access to the adjustment mechanism.
  2. Grasping the tip, we pull out the cable to the maximum possible length.
  3. We use a vernier caliper to measure the distance present between the tip and the previously marked fork. The norm assumes a value of 27 mm.
  4. If a discrepancy is found with the indicated gap value, then we proceed as follows: we turn the leash along the thread until the previously indicated distance value is reached.
  5. We release the cable end and make sure that it is firmly pressed against the fork.
  6. Press the clutch pedal several times to activate the automatic length adjustment unit.
  7. Now we resort to measuring the indicated gap. If a deviation is found again, then we do the indicated manipulations again. This completes the clutch cable adjustment.

When the clutch adjustment is completed, the clutch unit in the Lada Kalina is sometimes able to remind of itself with squeaks or noises. This can be caused by rubbing the leash against the surface of the fork. To eliminate the annoying sound effect, grease will help, which should be applied to the contact of the cable end nut and the fork. Among other reasons, there may be a creak of the pedal hub bushing, as well as the deterioration of the sensor located there.

If the sensor is faulty?

This component can only be installed with the electronic version of the accelerator pedal. The main function of the sensor is to control the operating modes of the Lada Kalina motor during gear shifting in the transmission or when starting the movement.

If the sensor is faulty, then the owner of Lada Kalina 2 will inform the ECU of this fact by highlighting the "Check" symbol. In this case, the error code is "0830". The presence of a sensor breakage in physical terms is felt by the following signs:

  • jerks of the Lada Kalina 2 car at the time of switching the gearbox stages;
  • a sudden increase in speed (the motor works in the mode idle move) when pressing the clutch pedal assembly.

The designated element cannot be adjusted, therefore, if functionality is lost, it must be replaced. The sensor is located above the pedal, or rather, under the steering shaft column. For replacement, you should select an analogue with the code "1118-3720015" (also suitable for Priore and Grant).

The replacement procedure is characterized by inconvenience due to the inaccessibility of two self-tapping screws, by means of which the component is fixed on the pedal bracket.

  1. Dismantling involves removing the cable strip holder and the corresponding hole present on the pedal bracket.
  2. We also disconnect the block from the wiring harness under the dashboard.
  3. You will need a screwdriver to remove the spring hook from the holder.
  4. Now we unscrew the previously indicated hard-to-reach screws.
  5. We remove the sensor with the holder and then install a new element.

The assembly activity is carried out in the reverse algorithm.

Let's summarize

We have made sure that clutch adjustment is not difficult. Adjusting the clutch cable involves carrying out all work on a muffled Lada Kalina 2. When, after completing the entire list of manipulations, there are still extraneous effects (noise, etc.), then you should go to the service for a more in-depth diagnosis and elimination of the causes and factors that violate the correct clutch functionality.
