- On your own is a more time-consuming method.

Most manufacturers indicate the factory color code of the car on the same number plate where the VIN code is stamped. But there is a small snag - if you are not a specialist, it is unlikely that you will be able to find it, since it often does not have identification marks (just a number is indicated). This information may be corrupted or missing altogether. This happens very rarely, but it does happen.
You can also look at the data sheet - it also often reflects this information. But again, it’s not a fact that exactly the numeric and alphabetic code will be indicated, and not just the name of the color.
If the above methods did not work, find out the car's paint number by VIN code - using our service, this can be done in a matter of minutes from any device with Internet access.
What is a VIN and where can I find it?
The VIN is a unique vehicle identification number. As a rule, it consists of 17 characters (Latin letters and Arabic numerals). It is encrypted full information about the vehicle, including the paint number.
To find out the factory color of the car by the VIN code, you need to know where the plate (nameplate) with the identification number is located. Traditionally, automakers mount it in such places:
- B-pillar on the driver's side;
- under the passenger or driver's seat;
- in a special window at the bottom of the windshield (left corner);
- at the bottom of the trunk.
Finding out the paint code of a car by the VIN code is necessary not only to restore damaged body elements. This is important for one more reason - stolen vehicles are often repainted and in this case the actual color will not match the factory one, which is registered in the VIN number. This is especially useful for buyers of used cars.

Perhaps, many motorists are familiar with the feeling of disappointment when a scratch or chip is suddenly found on a brand new car. Moreover, no matter what the size of the damage - appearance car for a particularly picky owner seems hopelessly damaged. Fortunately, today there are many ways to restore original form paintwork (LKP) of the car body, among which local and general painting of a damaged element is very popular.
Suppose such a misfortune touched the body of your " iron horse". You should not despair, but first of all, you should find a suitable car painting company. Depending on the degree of damage to the paintwork, the specialist will offer to carry out local (that is, in place) or full painting element. The author himself has repeatedly encountered such problems, and from the experience of communicating with car painters, I will say that they prefer to completely paint an element (for example, a door), convincing that local painting is not always suitable due to the fact that you can simply miss the color. And on a large surface, it supposedly happens better. I note that this statement is not always true and in many cases the painter persuades to paint the element completely simply because this procedure is more expensive than local repair of the paintwork. Almost the most important point in this operation is the correct selection of the paint color. It is no secret that many, especially foreign automotive manufacturers paint their models with paints that are rarely found in a car workshop in Russia. In addition, the age and condition of the car's paintwork should be taken into account - the paint loses its original color over time. That is why it is so important to “get into” the common color scheme car. Therefore, the quality result of the repair depends on the ability of the painter to mix paints.
Suppose you have agreed with the painter on the type of repair, but the cost Supplies, the same paint, seems overpriced. You can negotiate with the painter and purchase the paint yourself, while, as a rule, the paint company does not take the liberty of guaranteeing a 100% positive result of such a repair. Auto painters explain their position simply: the paint was not bought from them, its quality is doubtful for them. Therefore, the car owner must decide whether it is worth saving on paint and purchasing it "on the side." If you still decide to buy paint yourself, then, first of all, you need to find out the color code of the car .
To do this, you need to find out where your car has a plate with a VIN number. This is a kind of car passport, in a combination of letters and numbers of which information about the date and country of manufacture of the car is encrypted, as well as (but not always) about the paint code that the body is painted with. Most often, such plates are located in the engine compartment or in the front door opening - when the driver's, and when - the passenger.
The fact is that there is no strictly regulated location for the wine code plate, so the manufacturer puts it where it is convenient for him.
By car domestic production data on the paint that covered the car body was placed on a special piece of paper, which was attached with inside trunk or hood.
Suppose you found a plate with a VIN code, and found numbers on it, the meaning of which you do not know. A hint that you have a car color code in front of you can give the inscription Color. If it is not there, then it is difficult to understand the meaning of the numbers. You can rewrite them and bring them to the colorists who will select the paint for the repair - they can determine the paint from various catalogs (Duxon, Mobihell, Spies Hecker and others). But even better, contact official dealer, from whom you bought a car, he will definitely tell you the color code of your car.
If the car was not bought in the salon, but on the plate with the VIN code in the car, for some reason there is no information about the color code, you should not despair. There are special resources on the Internet where you can determine the desired paint code by the wine code. The most accurate and popular are www.autocoms.ru/help/58, www.paint scratch.com, but their drawback is that not all brands of cars that exist today are indicated. Therefore, again, you will have to contact the official dealer of the brand: even if you didn’t buy the car, and it was purchased several years ago, the dealer’s database contains information about it, and he will definitely be able to suggest the color code of your vehicle.
After the color code of the car is determined, it remains only to purchase this paint. This can be done in several ways. The most common ones are from official representatives of the brand to which your car belongs, or through independent sites, for example, exist.ru. Having paid and received the paint, you need to bring it to the specialists of the paint shop where you are going to repair the paintwork, so that they can carry out a test fit - the procedure for selecting the mixture that will be used for coloring, which is optimal in color, composition and weight ratio of pigments. Feel free to ask to be present at this procedure - this is your legal right. Having chosen the optimal shade, experts will restore the paintwork of your car.

It is called the VIN number, VIN code, or just the body number, but they are all the same. A VIN can be compared to a car's fingerprint. The VIN code can indicate the manufacturer of the car, model, year and place of production, all its parameters and.
Why is it needed
VIN (abbreviation for "Vehicle Identification Number") is a unique code used by the automotive industry to identify each car, bus, truck, motorcycle, or even trailer.
The specific and highly complex structure of the VIN code should, in theory, ensure that every vehicle manufactured since 1981 has a unique identification number. Thus, it is almost impossible to find two cars with the same VIN. This allows you to assign a code to a specific vehicle and track its history.
What do the VIN symbols mean?
The first three characters are called the Worldwide Manufacturer Index (WMI). The first one says what country the car was made in or where the manufacturer's headquarters is located. The 2nd and 3rd characters indicate the manufacturer of the machine.
For example, if the first characters of the VIN code are 1VW, then this is a Volkswagen made in the USA. If the first character was W, it would mean that this Volkswagen was . By the way, if a manufacturer produces a small number of cars (for example, in the European Union this means 500 or fewer cars per year), it always uses the number 9 as the third character of the VIN.
The middle part (4-9 characters) is the section of the vehicle descriptor (VDS) that describes its type. Due to local regulations and other reasons, each manufacturer has developed its own unique system for VDS. Usually information is provided here about the model, body type, type of engine used car platform, number of doors, etc.
The last group of characters (10-17) is used as the Vehicle Identifier (VIS) section. This is a unique serial number by which the manufacturer can accurately identify the vehicle. So, VIS reveals everything: from the year of manufacture to the original equipment of the car.
Where is the VIN number on the car
Why is it so useful?
The VIN is used to identify the machine. All "life events" of a particular car, such as production, registration, maintenance, accidents, warranty claims, theft, insurance coverage, purchase, etc., are recorded in various registries and databases using VIN numbers. Therefore, with the help of software, you can find all this data and generate a report on the history of a particular car.
Just by having the vehicle's VIN number, you can find out not only basic information about the car (year of manufacture, engine power, type of fuel or transmission, etc.), but also more specific and useful data. It also includes an archive of photographs in different time if there were any accidents, if it was stolen, how many owners it had and so on. When you have different data for different dates, you can compare them and detect mileage fraud or hidden accidents.
How to find out the paint color of a car by VIN code
Let's see how you can find out the color of a car from the VIN:
- Open the driver's door. Like other information posted on your vehicle, paint code information is usually found inside the driver's door on the jamb. Two types of codes are specified - one for the exterior paint, the other for the interior color. Write down the paint code and call your supplier's support to have them decipher it for you.
- Scroll through the instructions. If you can't figure out the paint color from the code, check your vehicle's owner's manual as this book can determine where the correct code plates were placed. Carefully inspect each door jamb and under the top of the hood.
- Write down your VIN. Each passenger vehicle has an identification number, a 17-digit serial code unique to your vehicle. Sometimes it is located on windshield in the corner or directly under the bonnet, on the inside on one of the corners.
Be careful when using the internet to decipher a car's paint color from the VIN. There are many websites that match paint color codes with their names, but this information may not be correct. Among the features of searching for a code in domestic cars, only simplicity can be distinguished - all information plates are located under the hood or on the trunk lid.
How to find the paint code
Examples of placing paint code plates on foreign cars of the most popular models:
- Acura/Honda. The identification plate with codes is located directly on the door jamb on the driver's side. standard format color code: NH-583M; stands for Vogue Silver Metallic Clearcoat. This color can also stand for Silver Clearcoat, Light Silver Clearcoat, etc., depending on how the marketing department decides to call it.
- Audi Codes usually hard to find. In most cases, they are located somewhere near the spare wheel. Printed on an identification paper tag that is guaranteed to fall out and be lost over time.
Standard color code format: LY9H or P1. As a rule, most Audis are marked LY9H, but P1 is also sometimes found. LY9H matches the "Polar White Clearcoat" exterior color, P1 is also used on some Audis for the same color. The code "LY9H" corresponds to the color "White Clearcoat", although another name may be used, such as "Moonstone Clearcoat", etc. - bmw. The code is usually located under the hood at the roof pillars, although sometimes it can be on the engine cover, on the radiator frame, on the door frame, or in the trunk. The standard code format is 300, which corresponds to the color "Alpine White III Clearcoat". Be careful as the code "300" can also be called "White Clearcoat", "Premium White Clearcoat", etc.
- Chrysler (AMC, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Plymouth). The codes are hard to find. Initially, manufacturers placed the codes on top of the radiator support, making it impossible to identify them due to engine lubrication and the oil they were hiding under. In later models, designers began to place them in the driver's door jamb. Code format: BS / GBS, where the code itself is only "BS". The first letter is the mysterious "Year Code" which, no matter what was intended, just creates confusion. BS corresponds to the color "Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat". The "G" in "GBS" is not part of the color code.
- Ford (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury). Always on the driver's door jamb, but often they will have the color code above where it says "Exterior Paint Code". As a rule, it is not correct. Also, on the color plate you can see CC Met, which stands for "Clearcoat Metallic" and is not part of the color code. Sometimes they put a color code right in the middle of the sticker. The important thing here is to first look at the color palette, make an educated guess as to which color is the correct one, and then find that code on the color plate. Code format: PM/M6599 which corresponds to "Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat". Compare carefully as "PM/M6599" can also be found as "Bright Green Clearcoat", "Speed Green Clearcoat", etc.
- GM (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Geo, GMC, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn). It has a rather confusing coding system. For example, the color code 96/WA8867 on your vehicle might appear as: 96U 96L 8867 WA8867 8867L 8867U. First of all, you need to check the glove compartment and the spare tire compartment.
The standard color code format is 51/WA316N which corresponds to "Gold Mist Metallic Clearcoat" and is usually preceded by BC/CC. So the color of the car will be BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N. In addition, there are indeed two or more codes in each color value. The value "51" can correspond to eighteen different codes, so the value "316N" will also have to be used to accurately match the color. In addition, these codes may be preceded by the characters "U" or "L", which correspond to the top and bottom colors. Be careful as the code "316N" can also be called "Gold Clearcoat", "Inca Metallic Clearcoat", etc. - Find out the color number Hyundai relatively easy as the codes are usually found on the driver's door jamb. Some models hide them in engine compartment, so if they're not on the driver's door frame, look there. The standard color code format is 3E, which corresponds to "Blue Onyx Metallic Clearcoat". Later Hyundai models use a three-character code. 3E can also be called "Blue Clearcoat", "Ocean Blue Clearcoat", etc. Always found in the driver's doorway. The standard color code format is AX6, corresponding to Redline Clearcoat. It can also be called "Red Clearcoat", "High Performance Clearcoat", etc.
- Jaguar. Jaguar codes are usually found in the driver's doorway. On older Jaguar models, the color code can be anywhere - under the hood, in the trunk, etc. Standard color code format: 1957/HGZ - "Racing Green Pearl", "Racing Clearcoat", "Green Performance Clearcoat", etc. .
- Kia. The codes are always on the driver's door frame. The standard color code format is B3, which corresponds to "Mica Blue Metallic Clearcoat" or "Blue Clearcoat", "Light Mist Clearcoat", etc.
- Land Rover. On newer models, the codes are located on the driver's door jamb. In older ones - under the hood on the radiator support. Code Format: LRC961/HAF corresponding to Epsom Green Clearcoat, or Freen Clearcoat, Light Mist Clearcoat.
In general, a 17-digit code can be a magic wand in the hands of a car buyer if he knows how to read it correctly. Codes can reveal much more facts from than the seller wants to tell. Having all the information about a car can help you in many ways. Perhaps you will negotiate a lower price, try to get some kind of bonus, or even decide not to buy a car because of its condition.
When locally repairing a car's paintwork after an accident or due to other mechanical influences that can lead to rust in the future, it is often necessary to accurately guess the color of the factory paint that is applied to your car. This is done in order to avoid visual differences between the treated area and the rest of the body surface. At the factory, when applying a paintwork for enamel, a number is assigned, which is the car paint code. This number indicates the weight ratio of pigments that are added to obtain the desired tone.
For marketing sales, intricate names for the car body color are often used, and when you need to determine the really right tone for a local repair, then you need to rely on the car paint code. Indeed, for the same model of car, depending on the year of manufacture, this number may differ and you need to clearly recognize it specifically for your car.
Technology for selecting the color of car paint by VIN code
VIN code is a value of 17 characters. These symbols contain information about the configuration and technical warehouse of the car. It is worth noting that you will not be able to directly find out the car paint code by the VIN code, since it does not give you such information. Here the approach is slightly different. You can accurately find out the model, year of manufacture and equipment of the vehicle. With this data on hand, you can use the manufacturer's catalog or specialized websites to determine a list of all paint codes that were used for this model in those years of production. But even here there is a problem, if, for example, you have a yellow car, then the probability of finding the exact code is high, but if the car is gray, then there are often many variations and you won’t be able to find out exactly what color of paint you have. In this case, you need to go to the colorist at the service station and use computer selection to determine the desired tone.
How to find out the paint code of a car?
The search in foreign cars should be started from the door pillars, they often place a plate with these data. In addition, depending on the model and brand of car, it can be under the hood. Also another place where you can look is the trunk. Place information about the color of the enamel is usually on the same plate with the VIN code. Sometimes the keywords "COLOR" or "PAINT" are indicated near the number, so that it is clear what kind of designation it is.
Where can I find this number domestic cars? In most cases, under the hood or in the area luggage compartment or in service book, but this is provided that the car is not older than 5 - 7 years. If the car is older, then it is better to contact a specialist for the selection of paint.
After rewriting this number, you can turn to a colorist who can mix the tones in the right proportion and get what you need. Please note that if the car is stored on the street for 5-10 years, then the body color is likely to burn out and the paint code will no longer match, it will be brighter, in which case a computer selection should be made.
Here is a table of commonly used codes for various colors.
