How to replace the timing belt VAZ 2110 8 valve. Belt problems

home / Repair and maintenance

Replacing the timing belt is not at all difficult and you will perfectly cope with this matter yourself, without the help of auto repair shops, thereby saving money from your budget. In addition, you will gain invaluable experience that will be useful for you in the future.

The timing belt is a closed rubber ring, the size of which depends on the type, as well as the model of the engine. On the inside of the belt there are notches around the entire perimeter.

The belt must be replaced according to the documentation through:
- 75 t.km on an 8kl engine
- 45 t.km on a 16kl engine

Rapid belt wear usually means there is a problem with the timing system. The reasons for the influence must be identified and eliminated.

Timing Belt Damage Analysis

1. When the timing belt is slightly damaged or completely torn and at the same time the cord is frayed, then most likely the reason for this is over-tension.

2. When one of the teeth is missing, it is a sign of poor belt tension.

3. Lack or high wear of the teeth on the belt, in turn, indicates an incorrect tension.

4. A cracked timing belt indicates severe overheating or hypothermia.

5. When wear is visible between the teeth, the belt is most likely not tensioned correctly. (weak or strong).

It is possible that if the belt is loosely tensioned, the belt will jump over the tooth, in this case "CHECK" lights up and immediately goes out. This is the camshaft position sensor signaling.

6. An oily timing belt indicates that oil is leaking from the engine in some place. In this case, you need to replace the belt and look for leaks.

7. Noticeable end wear indicates angular or parallel belt misalignment.

8. Excessive noise indicates over-tensioning or under-tensioning of the belt. This problem should be corrected immediately so that the teeth do not shear or the belt breaks.

Replacing the timing belt with a VAZ 2114 2110 8 valves

You will need:

1. Spanner key on "17".
2. The key is at "15".
3. Retaining ring remover.
4. Powerful screwdriver or pry bar.
5. Key to adjust the tension roller
Use gloves when carrying out work.

This video shows the replacement of the timing belt with a VAZ 2114

1. Disconnect the negative lead from the battery.

4. Using a “15” wrench, unscrew the roller mounting bolt, then just slightly turn tension roller to reduce the timing belt tension.

5. Straighten (remove) the belt from the pulleys: camshaft, idler pulley, and water pump toothed pulley.

6. Fix the crankshaft (with a pry bar or screwdriver) and unscrew the bolt securing the alternator drive pulley. This action is best done with an assistant. The first one holds the crankshaft by the flywheel ring teeth using a pry bar, the second one removes the plug from the clutch housing and unscrews the pulley mounting bolt.

7. Using a spanner wrench on "17", unscrew the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley, then remove it together with the washer.

8. Then remove the alternator drive pulley from the crankshaft.

9. Remove the timing belt drive washer from the pulley, then you can remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.

Installing the timing belt

Everything is done in the reverse order.

1. It is almost impossible to make a mistake when installing the generator drive pulley, it has a recess, if it does not coincide with which it will not snap into place.

2. When installing the belt, observe the tension on the drive strand.

3. After installing the belt, it should be tightened to normal

The timing belt is tensioned as follows:
By installing a special key in the holes on outside roller - turn counterclockwise until the notch on the outer disc aligns with the rectangular tab on the inner roller hub.

It is normal if in the middle of the belt it can be twisted almost 90 degrees. If it is overtightened, then you cannot turn it by hand to this angle. If the belt does not reach, then it will beat about protective cover(cover) and hang out.

4. With a key to "15", you need to tighten the tension roller fixing bolt.

5. If, after replacing the timing belt while the engine is running, there is an increased noise, then it is likely that the roller bearing is defective.

6. To check, remove the roller, and then slowly, rotating it, check if there is no play or jamming.

7. If you find a backlash at the tension roller or it slows down during free rotation, or is physically damaged, replace the roller.

Dear friends, today we will tell you the basics of timing marks on the example of VAZ 16 valve engine... It's no secret that correctly positioned timing marks are the key to proper engine operation. If the labels are set incorrectly, then the normal operation of the engine is excluded. It is also important to correctly tighten the belt, this greatly affects its durability. So, when do we have to deal with the timing procedure by tags? When, according to the regulations, we need to replace the timing belt at the next MOT, by the way, the rollers also necessarily change along with the belt in this case. Also, if our pump is "covered" - the timing belt will have to be removed, since it is he who drives our "water pump". Well, and if (the worst option) - our belt broke. Here, if the engine is "plug-in", then this is a huge nuisance, pistons meet with valves, and at least removal of the block head with replacement of valves is guaranteed to us. So, what are timing marks and where are they applied. The first is the marks on the camshaft pulleys, both on the intake and exhaust:

They should coincide with the mark on the crankshaft, and here there are already several methods for calculating this mark. Quite complicated, remove the alternator belt pulley (it does not allow you to see the mark) and see the coincidence of the marks on the street.

With this coincidence, the piston marks are at TDC (Top Dead Center)

And finally, the third option for setting the position of the crankshaft is the marks on the flywheel, they can be seen if you remove the rubber plug at the checkpoint:

These are the options for comparing timing marks, we offer you using the example of 1.5 16V engines installed on the VAZ-2110, VAZ-2112 and VAZ-2111. If you still have questions regarding timing marks on your specific engine - ask them on our forum, in the appropriate section.

The timing belt, despite its simplicity, plays a very important role and if it breaks, the consequences can be simply catastrophic. According to the regulations, replacing the VAZ 2110 timing belt with 8 valves and 16 valves should take place every 50-60 thousand kilometers. And an inspection of his condition every 15,000 km.

Such measures are much easier than recovery in the event of a break and do not require special costs and time. The very same timing belt change on the unit 8 and 16 cl. it is quite possible to carry out on their own while saving on car service services. In order to change, you need to select the same as installed.

Timing Belt Function

The timing belt is designed to synchronize the rotation of the shafts power unit... This is important, since from the coordinated operation of these elements, the timing belt implements the main function - the inlet of the combustible mixture and the release of gases through the valves. The main purpose of the timing belt is to rotate the camshaft at half the speed of the crankshaft.

When should you change?

Immediate replacement of the timing belt is required in the following cases:

Replacement process

The process of replacing the timing belt on an 8 and 16 grade engine, according to motorists, is simple and can be done by hand, in an ordinary garage. This video shows how you can change and where the marks on the injector are located, as well as which drive is better to choose for installation.

Required set of tools

Stages of work

The timing drive is changing on a VAZ 2110 with an 8 valve unit in the following sequence for 16 practically the same, with some exceptions:

  1. It is necessary to de-energize the system by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. We unscrew the screws that secure the protective cover of the gas distribution mechanism drive.
  3. Remove the cover.
  4. Dismantle the right wheel in front.
  5. Remove the engine compartment mudguard.
  6. We remove the protection.
  7. We rotate in the clockwise direction, the generator pulley until the marks on the cover and the pulley coincide.
  8. At the checkpoint, remove the protective plug.
  9. Check through the hole to see if the reference marks match.
  10. Next, use a screwdriver or other object to lock the flywheel.
  11. Unscrew and remove the alternator pulley.
  12. It is necessary to loosen the nut securing the belt tension roller.
  13. After the old belt has loosened, it can be removed. You need to tighten it carefully. Even if it slips badly.
  14. Using white spirit, we clean the elements from grease.
  15. Wipe dry with a cloth. Everything can now be changed.
  16. Pull the new timing drive along the arrows. In their absence, the drive is stretched so that the inscription can be read.
  17. We spin the roller.
  18. To tension the timing drive, you need to turn the roller counterclockwise.
  19. Checking the tags.
  20. We check the tension.
  21. We start the engine and check if the belt is installed correctly.
  22. If everything functions normally and does not slip, reinstall the removed elements.

There is nothing complicated and after spending a couple of hours you can do this work yourself. If the drive slips and eats up, then you need to check the roller, most likely it needs to be changed. If you have any questions, watch the video.

Video "Correct Replacement"

4 years ago

Welcome!
The timing belt is an important part of the Gas Distribution mechanism, thanks to the belt, in fact, the engine works, at the moment the quality of the belts is different and the price does not depend on it at all, many have enough timing belts in different ways, but still inspection of the belt periodically it is necessary to carry out and look for any cracks on it, traces of what it has swung, if you pay little attention to the timing belt, you will always be confident in your car.

Note!
Changing the timing belt is not easy, especially 16 valve cars, but everything is doable and everything is possible, especially when you have at hand the right tool, and to replace the belt you will need: A screwdriver, a set of keys, a "5" hexagon and an assistant!

Summary:

Where is the timing belt?
To prevent dirt and moisture from getting into the belt, as well as into the sprockets, it is hidden under a protective cover that is in every car and which closes the timing system from this very dirt, this cover is usually bolted or still happens with screws, but with a wrench head, a vivid example are the cars of the Samara family and the tenth family, with a 2111 engine (This is an 8 valve, 1.5 injection engine), there are these screws, by the way, we want to warn you right away, in this article there will be nothing about 8 valve engines, so if you need to study the principle of replacing the belt with them, go to the article: "Replacing the timing belt on the 2111 engine ", In which everything is painted.

Note!
If you change the belt, immediately remove the cover, it is attached to five bolts, but they have hex heads, so picking up a special. wrench for this (Hexagon "5"), unscrew the bolts and remove them (The location of the bolts is indicated by the arrows in the small photo above) and then remove top cover and just below there will be another (Lower) one, it is already only fixed on two bolts, also unscrew them and remove it completely from the car so that nothing gets in the way!

When do you need to change the timing belt?
60,000 thousand km it will be enough, if there is an opportunity, if you wish, you can do it a little more often, it will not be worse from this, only if you don’t get an underground belt, we generally do not recommend taking belts in the markets, in bazaars, in basements and the like places, take only in car dealerships, in high-quality car dealerships, where the belt will be in the box, then it will serve you not a short life and will not break from the slightest overloads.

The belt still needs to be changed if there are visible wear on it, namely: Tears on the belt, cracks, tears, all this can lead to the fact that the belt will break in the near future, such a belt needs to be changed and as soon as possible, if it is not yet possible ( Time), then we do not recommend operating the car with such damage to the belt, because it will cut off the belt wherever and you will get up and you will not know how much help (if it happened in the countryside, if the situation is much better in the city), well, if you still want to continue to drive, despite damage to the belt, then we will give a couple of tips:

1. Try to twist the engine as little as possible, because from this, large overloads go on the belt and it may eventually break.

2. And also try to switch speeds so that the engine gets into the speed of the car, so that there is no such thing, you drive at 4000 thousand rpm and turn on abruptly downshift and then the engine roars, the engine brakes, and again, there is a heavy load on the timing belt, which can also easily break it and you will not go anywhere further, so get into speed.

How to replace the timing belt on a VAZ 2110-VAZ 2112?

Withdrawal:
1) First you have to remove the wheel, then the wheel arch liner (All this with right side you need to do, in the direction of the car) and ultimately the crankshaft pulley (which is large, small does not need to be touched), how to do this, read the article: "Replacing the crankshaft oil seal with a VAZ", after the operation, it will remain on the crankshaft sit a small pulley, you will need to fasten it with the same large bolt that the large pulley was fastened, and then you will have to set the Gas Distribution Mechanism according to the marks, for this, screw the large bolt into place, turn on neutral gear, put the car on the handbrake and turn this bolt clockwise, if you do everything correctly, then when it is completely wrapped (and you will need to continue to turn it), the crankshaft pulley will start spinning, and therefore all the pulleys will move from their place (For the timing belt count) and you will need to set all the pulleys according to the marks, in more detail all the marks (and there are only six of them, three on the gears, two on the back cover of the mechanism and one mark poured on the oil pump housing) are shown in the photo below, they should all coincide with each other, until they coincide to work, and do not even overstep.

Note!
If it so happened that the belt broke, then you will not move the camshaft pulleys so easily, in this case you still need to do everything, you just need to turn the camshaft pulleys in the same way the bolts that secure them and tightening the bolts, turn the pulleys until everything is clear according to the marks)!

2) Now loosen the tension and guide roller, they are loosened due to their fastening nuts, after loosening, the rollers turn (if necessary, you turn them by hand as needed) and the timing belt can be removed from the pulleys from all, after removal, check in what condition the rollers are in, if necessary, replace these rollers with new ones.

Note!
Briefly about the condition of the roller, namely what they should be, in general, there are bearings inside the rollers (Both), they play the main role, but the bearings should be in good condition, i.e. the rollers should rotate freely, without backlash, they should not have jamming and noise in operation (Usually noise appears when the engine is running, i.e. when the belt is spinning, but it happens that by rotating it, the noise can also be heard, such a roller must be replaced immediately)!

Installation:
1. Installation of a new belt starts from the bottom, to be more precise, it is installed at the beginning on the crankshaft pulley (Before installation, be sure to check whether the pulley converges on the mark, if necessary, make it converge) and so it goes up to the top, after the pulley crankshaft as you already understood the belt on the pump from the outside to sit down, then with inside it enters under the tension roller, and its right branch at this time passes from the inside of the guide roller, to the top ( Camshafts) the belt is worn only at the very end and you need to try to put it on both shafts so that they do not stray from the marks (This is mandatory), for this, tools are usually used that lock both pulleys and they do not rotate anywhere, but if there are none, then take into account a certain fact, namely, when the belt is removed, the pulley that goes to the inlet under the action of the spring will turn one tooth clockwise, and the pulley that goes out, under the action of those springs, turns one tooth counterclockwise, your actions are as follows , take the key to turn the camshaft pulley (This is a normal "17" box wrench, you can use the knob if you have it in your arsenal) and turn the pulley with it, which goes to the inlet (It is with a disc, it is indicated in the photo above with the number 7) until the marks are aligned, then, having selected the sagging of the right branch, put the belt on the pulley (see photo 1) and most importantly, make sure that the pulley does not jump over the teeth, then carefully let the pulley return to its e starting position(He will turn about one tooth to the right), immediately then (Here it is already much more convenient with an assistant) with the same key, turn the other pulley (which goes to release) and set it in such a way that it stands like the other pulley (One tooth to the right was deflected from the mark), when this is done, put the timing belt on its upper part (see photo 2), while there should be no sagging between the camshaft pulleys and make sure that the pulley does not jump when you put the belt on it , now turning both pulleys, make sure that the right branch is stretched (during turning, the crankshaft pulley must be in place) and completely put the timing belt on all pulleys (see photo 3), and then check if all the marks match up properly, if that's right, start adjusting the belt, it is carried out due to the tension roller, i.e. special is taken. the key and it turns the roller (see photo 4), but in order to turn it, the roller mounting bolt must be slightly loosened, and after the belt is well tensioned, the bolt that secures the roller is turned all the way and the correct tension is checked, you will need a household one to check a steelyard (to determine the effort) and a caliper, after finding these tools, the steelyard will need to be hooked onto the handle of the socket wrench extension and it will need to be wrapped with tape, when the tool is ready, proceed to check, for this in the middle part (see photo 3) press the timing belt through an extension cord with a force of 10 kgf and measure how much the belt will bend, its deflection should be 5.4 mm, in order to determine such a deflection with millimeter accuracy, you will need a caliper and put the length of a screwdriver on the pulleys, everything is shown in great detail in photo 3, if the deflection does not fit into the norms, then adjust the belt tension again.

Note!
When working with a timing belt, it is advisable to have a special. tools that will lock both upper camshaft pulleys even before the belt is removed, it will be much easier to install the belt with them, since you just need to put it on and no extra brand (After dressing, the right branch should be tightened and a short section between the camshaft pulleys , there should not be any sagging), by the way, if something is not clear to you about how the belt should sit correctly, you can at any time see the diagram that we have already given earlier (It was in the form of a photograph, it shows how the belt should be correctly installed)!

2. When all operations are complete, scroll crankshaft for two full turns, the last turn when you do, make sure that all the marks come together, if everything converges, then the belt is installed correctly and you can install the remaining parts in their places, if necessary, remove and reinstall the belt.

Additional video clip:
An illustrative video clip showing the process of replacing the timing belt is posted just below:

Every knot and part in a car wears out, and the timing belt is no exception. In order for the replacement to be carried out correctly, the car manufacturer indicated in the passport the wear periods for all elements vehicle... VAZ replacement of the timing belt 2110 and 2112 according to the passport should take place every 45 thousand km. Of course, the indicator is inaccurate, because it all depends on the driving style, operating conditions and climate. Experts recommend checking the belt every 10 thousand kilometers.

In this article, we will consider the following issues:

  1. How is the work of the timing and its elements;
  2. Timing failure signs;
  3. Replacement with 8- and 16-valve motor.

Helpful advice! If, after 45 thousand, you replaced the belt, but at the same time it remained in working order, then you should not immediately throw it away. We recommend that you put it in the trunk or in the passenger compartment, because no one knows what may happen to the car on the way.

Belt principle and location

This element is a rubber-metal belt or a metal chain. Fuel-air mixture inlet and outlet exhaust gases- this is what the timing is about. Broken element can be costly renovation works, in which even the pistons may need to be replaced. In other words, the timing belt is the link between the crankshaft and the camshaft.

When a VAZ 2110 or 2112 timing belt is to be replaced, the driver is primarily interested in the location of this element. Opening the bonnet reveals a toothed belt immediately. Its main difference from other similar elements is that the belt spans several pulleys.

When to change the timing belt

First, it is worth considering the signs that can be felt or identified visually:

  • from engine compartment extraneous noises are heard;
  • the exhaust turned black;
  • difficulties when starting the engine;
  • when the motor is running, perceptible vibrations appear.

These signs do not always indicate a malfunction or damage to the timing belt, but when they occur, you first need to pay attention to this element. To check the element, it must be dismantled: the negative wire from the battery is disconnected, the plug is removed, then the alternator belt and six bolts securing the protective cover are removed. After that, you can assess the condition of the item.

Replacing the timing belt VAZ 2110 or 2112 is required if you find the following damage:

  • delamination of rubber;
  • there are oil smudges;
  • the presence of scuffs, cracks and folds;
  • bulges, cuts;
  • the presence of broken threads.

Replacement process - detailed instructions

We will analyze the options with 8- and 16-valve motors, which are present in the VAZ 2112 and 2110 models. Regardless of the number of valves, the same set of tools is required for replacement. The list includes standard tools that can be found in almost every driver's garage.

In addition to the timing belt itself and the roller for the VAZ 2110 or 2112, you will need in the work:

  • a special key that regulates the degree of roller tension;
  • spanner key for "17";
  • key to "15";
  • key to "10";
  • assembly, as an alternative - a powerful screwdriver.

Replacement on an 8-valve engine

Replacing the timing belt VAZ 2110 8 valves is as follows:

  1. The first step is to de-energize the battery - for this you need to get the negative wire;
  2. We unscrew the bolts that hold the timing protection cover, and then remove the cover;
  3. On the passenger side, it is necessary to dismantle the engine compartment mudguard together with the protective element and the right wheel;
  4. Our task is to achieve coincidence of the marks on the cover and, accordingly, on the pulley, as indicated in all diagrams. To do this, you need to twist the part clockwise;
  5. Go to the checkpoint and remove the plug from it;
  6. We need to check the coincidence of the marks in this hole;
  7. We block the flywheel - for this you can use a mounting or a powerful screwdriver;
  8. Now you can remove the timing generator pulley;
  9. We got to the nut that holds the timing roller - it must be loosened, but not unscrewed;
  10. So we got to the desired element of the VAZ 2110 or 2112 timing belt. Now it can be removed. All parts that he covered must be cleaned with detergent. After removing the dirt, wipe the area with a clean cloth;
  11. Next, a new timing belt and tensioner roller are installed - observe the direction indicated by the arrow. Sometimes it happens that the manufacturer does not indicate the arrows, in this case, you need to put the element so that the inscription reads from left to right;
  12. To tension it is necessary to turn the roller counterclockwise
  13. The next step is to test the timing belt and its tension. You need to check the element with a cold engine, while the temperature in the garage or box should be within + 15- + 30C. We start the engine and inspect the timing belt.

If there are no unnecessary sounds, vibrations, then all the elements can be installed back - this is a wheel, a casing and a mudguard.

Replacement on a 16-valve engine

Despite the fact that there are more valves here, replacing the timing belt is no more difficult than on the version with 8 valves. So, replacing the VAZ 2110 16 valve timing belt is performed as follows:

  1. As in the case of the VAZ 2110 or 2112, where there are 8 valves, we need to dismantle the belt guard. Hold it with 6 bolts.
  2. Next, you need to remove the chip from the crankshaft sensor - unscrew the mount and take out the sensor itself. For clarity, you can study the photo.
  3. If you are dismantling the gas distribution mechanism yourself, then you probably noticed the absence of one tooth. This is done so that the sensor can independently find the dead center. Also, using this feature, you can block the crankshaft.
  4. Locking can be done when a tube is placed in the hole under the sensor. suitable size... The pulley is now locked and can be safely removed as a result.
  5. Further, the scheme of work practically does not differ from removing the 8-valve timing mechanism with your own hands - we loosen the roller fastening and take out a faulty or worn out belt.
  6. Put new item there are two ways: remove the tension roller and then install the belt with it, or do it by scrolling the camshaft.
  7. When the new element is installed, you can return everything to its original position. It is worth starting with fastening the pulley - we tighten the bolt and align the gear - the marks on the oil pump will help in this. If they are absent, then you can make a mark yourself.
  8. It is necessary to combine the parts carefully, since the gear of the distribution mechanism should not go astray.
  9. Using a special key, we have to tighten the belt. Not everyone has such a key, but as an alternative, you can always take a powerful screwdriver and two nails. It is also worth remembering the nut, which must be tightened firmly.
  10. We check the tension, the rubber should move away from the gears, but there should be no folds.
  11. It remains to turn the crankshaft 2 times and make sure that the marks remain in the same place - the work is completed

As you can see, replacing the VAZ 2112 timing belt is quite simple. The main thing is to allocate time for this. Check the gas distribution mechanism every 10 thousand kilometers, and then you will not have to spend money on expensive repairs.
