Why do you need valve adjustment and how to get rid of it? Reasons for knocking valves of cars VAZ Valve clearances VAZ 2114

home / Machine Reviews

If the valves on the VAZ-2114 are 1.5 or 1.6 on eight valves, this indicates that the components need to be adjusted as soon as possible. Unfortunately, not all car owners immediately begin to eliminate such a malfunction, which leads to more serious consequences. After all, if timely adjustment is not made, then the engine power will significantly decrease, the valve will burn out, and the camshaft may become unbalanced altogether. Do not know how to properly adjust the valve clearances on the VAZ-2114 8 valves? Then we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the information that will be further stated.

The size of the gap is measured

Adjusting the valves yourself can be quite simple if you follow the instructions exactly and perform the work in stages. Before starting, you should check the dimensions of the gap, and if they do not correspond to the approved value, and a kind of knocking will be heard with the working engine, then the valves must be adjusted. To accurately check the size of the gap, you must wait until the engine has completely cooled down.

It should be remembered that if the measuring device is installed on a hot metal surface, it will not be possible to determine the exact size of the gap due to the error that occurs when the metal expands.

The size of the gap for both gas and gasoline must correspond to the following indicators:

  • inlet valve - from 0.05 to 0.2 mm;
  • outlet valve - from 0.05 to 0.35 mm

To work, you will need the following tools:

  • open-end and candle keys, it is better to have a set of such keys at hand;
  • a tool that helps to sink the valve pusher, its cost does not exceed 150 rubles;
  • set of special probes;
  • washers for adjustment from 3 to 4.5 mm thick;
  • a device called a micrometer.

Step-by-step adjustment

Checking and adjusting valves is a simple job that everyone, without exception, can handle if they follow the instructions exactly:

  • pushers are recessed and fixed at the lowest point;
  • the washer for adjusting the gap is removed and its thickness is measured using a micrometer;
  • Having decided on the required washer thickness, you need to take a suitable element from the kit and install it in the pusher. In this case, it is important to ensure that the washer enters the pusher with the side on which its thickness is indicated;
  • the gap dimensions are re-checked.
  1. The rest of the valves are regulated according to the same scheme, while each time you need to turn the crankshaft half a turn, and the sequence of adjustment should occur in this order:
  • 2nd inlet and 5th outlet;
  • 6th inlet and 8th outlet;
  • 7th intake and 4th exhaust.

1 - cylinder head
2 - valve
3 - pusher
4 - camshaft bearing housing
5 - a camshaft
6 - an adjusting washer
7 - slinger cap

A- the gap between the cam and the adjusting washer

Gap A between the camshaft cams and shims on a cold engine, there should be 0.2 ± 0.05 mm for intake valves and 0.35 ± 0.05 mm for exhaust valves.

The clearance is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the adjusting washer 6 for each valve.
Washer thickness is marked on its surface.
Shims are available with a thickness of 3 to 4.5 mm with an interval of every 0.05 mm.

Adjustment procedure

1. Remove the front toothed belt guard and valve cover;

2. Remove the spark plugs

3. Inspect the surface of the camshaft cams: they should be free of scoring, pits, wear and deep scratches;

4. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position. To do this, turn crankshaft until alignment of the timing marks on the pulley and the rear toothed belt cover and turn it another 40-50 ° (2.5-3 teeth on the camshaft pulley)

1 - crankshaft toothed pulley;
2 - toothed pulley of the coolant pump;
3 - tension roller;
4 - rear cover of the timing drive;
5 - toothed pulley of the camshaft;
6 - toothed belt;
A - locating protrusion on the rear cover of the timing drive;
B - mark on the camshaft pulley;
C - mark on the cover of the oil pump;
D - mark on the crankshaft pulley.

5. Install the tool (part number 67.7800.9503) on the pins of the cylinder head cover fastening to recess the valve tappets;

1 - special tool 67.7800.9503
2 - pusher

6. Check the clearances at the 1st and 3rd camshaft cams

If the gap differs from the norm, then with the above tool 67.7800.9503, sink the pusher and fix it in the lower position by placing it between the edge of the pusher and camshaft retainer 67.7800.9504

1 - retainer 67.7800.9504
2 - an adjusting washer

7. Using the tool 67.7800.9505, remove the adjusting washer and measure its thickness with a micrometer;

Determine the thickness of the new washer using the formula:
H = B + (A-C),
where A is the measured gap, mm;
B - thickness of the removed washer, mm;
C - nominal clearance, mm;
H is the thickness of the new washer, mm.

8. Install a new adjusting washer in the valve tappet with the marking towards the tappet, remove the retainer 67.7800.9504 and check the clearance again.

If the gap is adjusted correctly, then the 0.2 or 0.35 mm thick stylus should enter with a slight pinching;

8. Sequentially turning the crankshaft half a turn, which corresponds to the rotation of the mark on the camshaft pulley by 90 °, adjust the clearances of the remaining valves, observing the sequence shown in the table:

Assemble all covers after adjustment.

The valve adjustment procedure involves adjusting the clearance between the camshaft cam and the lateral face of the valve stem. Moreover, each manufacturer of one or another Vehicle determines its required value, which is called the "thermal gap" and is designed to ensure that the valves close tightly at any temperature of the engine.

In this article, we will consider the "thermal gap" of valves on the VAZ 2114, or rather the technology of their adjustment.

Tools needed to adjust the valves.

  • A set of shims.
  • A set of probes for measuring valve clearances.
  • Micrometer.
  • Clamp for pusher springs.
  • Specialist. tool: heads and keys 8-13 mm in size.

Adjustment instructions.

1. First of all, disassemble the air filter all the way down to the case.

2. Disconnect the pipes between the valve cover and the filter and the crankcase exhaust pipe.

3. Remove the valve cover of the cylinder head.

4. Remove the front timing belt cover, behind which is the camshaft gear, and on it the timing belt.

6. Then, for the mounting bolt of the alternator pulley, turn the crankshaft in the clockwise direction - so that the marks on the back cover of the toothed belt and the pulley coincide. And then a little more, about 3 teeth of the camshaft gear.

7. Using a set of feelers, check the clearances between the tappet of the first inlet and third outlet valves (counting from the drive pulley) and their ends. The first should be about 0.2 mm (+/- 0.05 mm, no more), the second - 0.35 (the error is the same).

8. In the case when the actual size of the gap does not coincide with the named values, it must be adjusted. To do this, drown the pusher, fix it in the lower position, and then remove the adjusting washer from there and replace it with a suitable one.

9. Further sequentially scrolling the crankshaft half a turn, alternately measure and, if necessary, adjust the clearances of the fifth exhaust and second exhaust, eighth exhaust and sixth exhaust, fourth exhaust and seventh exhaust valves.

10. At the end of the VAZ 2114 valve adjustment, install the removed parts in the required places in the reverse order.

These days, anyone modern car, in addition to electric, has an engine internal combustion with a gas distribution mechanism. A lot of parameters depend on the correct operation of this system. And they include fuel consumption, engine throttle response, environmental performance and other equally important indicators. The normal function of the gas distribution mechanism is provided by correct adjustment clearances between the valve and its pusher.

If the gap is too large, the camshaft cam will forcefully hit the pusher plate, and all this will lead to serious damage to engine components and mechanisms. In addition, the valve will not fully open when needed, thereby blocking movement. exhaust gases or a fuel-air mixture, depending on the type of valve. Intake - responsible for the fuel supply, exhaust - for the exhaust gases directed to the exhaust manifold.

The principle of operation of the valve train

On the contrary, if the valve is tightly clamped, then the mechanical damage to the motor parts will be less than with too much large gap... But the engine operation itself will be much worse. It is for good engine operation that it is necessary to carefully adjust the valves on VAZ cars. This procedure is carried out in several ways. First, the pusher is moved under the influence of the nut on the rod. The second is the selection of washers of spacers of the required thickness. The third is automatic, regulated under pressure engine oil in hydraulic expansion joints.

We expose the gap on the VAZ 2114

In our case, on a VAZ 2114 car, this procedure is performed in the second way, using adjusting washers and a special tool.

Firstly, you need to understand that the correct adjustment on the VAZ 2114 can only be performed at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, when the metal is at rest and is not subject to thermal expansion as on a warm engine.

Secondly, for each specific car there is a table with the dimensions of the clearances when the camshafts are raised.

For the fourteenth model, the following dimensions are used:

  • For inlet valves - 0.2 mm with a reading error of 0.05 mm;
  • For exhaust valves - 0.35 mm with a reading error of 0.05 mm.

Cool the space under the hood before adjusting, you can use a regular fan. After that, dismantle the valve cover, branch pipes, fastening clamps, side protective cover timing belt. After unscrewing the nut securing the accelerator pedal cable, carefully disconnect it. For ease of work, remove the cover air filter assembled. Before dismantling, be sure to place chocks under the wheels and turn on neutral gear... Manual parking brake must also be enabled.

The order of the valves VAZ 2114

When adjusting, take into account which valve is inlet and which outlet.The procedure is as follows:

5 - outlet and 2 - inlet; 8 - outlet and 6 - inlet; 4 - outlet and 7 - inlet.

Moving from the camshaft pulley, we measure the gaps between the pusher and the shaft cam. In places where the gap is correct, we leave everything unchanged. At the place where the probe of the appropriate size is easily pushed into the slot, press the plate down with the device for lowering the pusher and insert the flag to fix the pusher. Then we take out the adjusting washer with special tweezers and look at its markings. If necessary, measure the thickness with a micrometer. Next, we select a thicker washer, put it in its place and first check the gap with the necessary probe.

Valve clearances

If it does not fit, then we take a probe of a smaller thickness, and so on until the probe fits. Based on the difference between the nominal size and the size of the probe, which can be easily placed, we calculate the required thickness of the adjusting washer. We repeat the procedure until the probe starts to insert with a slight pinching.

If none of the test leads fit, then the valve is overtightened !! According to the above operation, remove the adjusting washer and change it to a smaller size.

Valve adjustment on an 8 valve engine VAZ 2114

A VAZ 2114 car uses a 4-cylinder in-line power point, the power supply system is an injector. The location of the gas distribution mechanism is upper, that is, not only the valves of the mechanism are located in the block head, but also the camshaft.
The VAZ 2114 uses an adjustable gas distribution mechanism, that is, the thermal gap is not independently regulated, as is done in a timing belt with hydraulic compensators, but is a strictly fixed value that must be periodically checked and adjusted.

On this car, since the timing is adjustable, the thermal gap is fixed, it should be 0.2 mm at the inlet valve, and 0.35 mm at the exhaust valve. A small error is also allowed - 0.05 mm.

The exact value on the VAZ 2114 engine is ensured by using shims of a certain thickness. These washers are placed between the camshaft cam and the valve tappet.

Valve clearance measurement

During engine operation, wear occurs due to friction, as a result of which the thermal gap changes, therefore, periodic inspection and adjustment is required. If this is not done, then a change in its value will lead to a disruption in the operation of the timing and valve timing. In this case, the VAZ 2114 loses power, increases the consumption of gasoline, worsens starting the engine on "cold" or "hot".

How does valve adjustment begin?

Adjustment thermal gap is made after its measurement, and if it does not correspond to the required one, by selecting a washer of a certain thickness.

According to the regulations, it is necessary to check and adjust the thermal gap on the VAZ 2114 every 60 thousand kilometers, as well as when a knock of valves appears.

  • set of open-end wrenches;
  • candle key;
  • set of probes;
  • special device for squeezing valves;
  • a set of adjusting washers;
  • rags;

The set includes a set of washers with a thickness of 3.0 mm to 4.5 mm. The interval of the size of the thickness is 0.05 mm, which allows you to select the washer of the required thickness when performing work. This set is not cheap, but purchasing it will allow you to independently carry out all the work for a long time without contacting a service station.

Also, to complete the work, you will need a gasket. valve cover, since it is disposable and must be replaced when removing the cover.

Work order

Now the sequence of actions:

  1. We install the VAZ 2114 on a flat platform, the engine must cool completely so that there is no error during measurements due to the expansion of the metal;
  2. We remove the valve cover, as well as the side cover, under which the timing belt is located. Wipe off oil from the surface under the lid. You should also carefully inspect the timing shaft for scoring, pits and signs of significant wear. If any, the shaft will have to be replaced;
  3. We unscrew the candles so that in the future it will be much easier to scroll the crankshaft.
  4. We combine the mark on the camshaft drive gear with the protrusion on the block head, that is, we set the TDC on the first cylinder. This can be done using a wrench with which we rotate the crankshaft by the pulley bolt. But some motorists do a little differently - they blow it out on the left. front wheel, include 4th gear. Then the wheel is simply rotated, and since the gear is engaged, this rotation will be transmitted through the transmission to the engine;
  5. After aligning the marks on the camshaft gear, strictly opposite the existing mark, we make another one with chalk. This will somewhat simplify the work in the future.
  6. With a probe we measure the clearances on valves 1 and 3 (you need to count from the camshaft gear. The 1st is the exhaust, and the 3rd is the intake);
  7. The gap on 1 valve should be 0.35 mm, but an error is allowed. That is, we take a 0.35 mm thick dipstick and insert it between the shaft cam and the adjusting washer. If the dipstick moves with little effort, then the clearance is normal, but if the dipstick does not fit or is very free, then adjustment is required. We do the same check on valve 3, but the gap on it should be 0.2 mm.
  8. The adjustment of the valves is carried out as follows: we fix the device for pressing the valves onto the studs of the cover fastening. This device has a curved arm that we place between the cam and the washer. With the handle of the device we press on this lever, as a result of which it will press the pusher. This device comes with a special retainer, which we place between the camshaft and the pusher. After releasing the handle, the retainer will hold the valve in a depressed position, while the washer will not be clamped and can be removed with tweezers.
  9. Let's take an example, which washer will need to be installed in order for the gap to be correct. For example, when checking on the exhaust valve, it was found that it was not 0.35 mm, but 0.42 mm, that is, it was increased by 0.07 mm. Next, we remove the washer that was installed. There should be a mark on it indicating its thickness (for example, 3.65 mm), if there is no such mark, then you will have to measure the thickness with a micrometer. Now, to the thickness of the washer, we add the value by which the gap is increased, in our case - 0.07 mm, as a result, we get the value of the washer thickness for installation - 3.65 + 0.07 = 3.72 mm. But since there is no washer with such a thickness in the kit, we install a new washer with a thickness that is as close as possible to the obtained value, that is, 3.7 mm. It is for this that an error of 0.05 mm is allowed.
  10. We install the washer of the required thickness in place with the mark with the size down (to the pusher). Next, use the device lever to press the valve again and pull out the retainer. This completes the adjustment.
  11. Further, the remaining valves are adjusted, but for this you need to know the order. After checking valves 1 and 3, we turn the camshaft half a turn (for ease of installation, we pre-marked the gear) and check 2 (intake) and 5 (exhaust) valves. Then we turn it half a turn and adjust 6 (inlet) and 8 (outlet). To check the 4 (intake) and 7 (exhaust) valves, you still need to turn the camshaft half a turn.

After all the work, we install the removed covers in place and are content with the precise operation of the timing belt and the engine as a whole.

Valve adjustment VAZ 2114

all greetings.
in this post we will talk about adjusting the thermal gaps in the gas distribution mechanism, that is, adjusting the valves)
my engine is 11183 (viburnum) 1.6 8V.

I will say one thing right away, guys, I advise you to adjust the valves yourself, if you change the oil in the internal combustion engine yourself, then you can do it too.
I personally went to the service twice for adjustment, in one, as soon as I arrived, they began to drop the cover and adjust, in the other, without messing around in what position the cams of the shaft were adjusted. and at what they take money is not trivial, where 500r where and 1200r. tired, from now on I always do it myself. for the second time, with my own hands)))

a little more words, patience, we will soon move on to practice)))
I will say right away, I have allocated 2 days for this matter.
one day, having arrived from work, he threw off the valve cover and left the engine to cool down overnight.
in the morning of the second day, I began to regulate.

and so what we need from material and tool:
1) a device for adjusting the valves (rod, flag, handle for recessed pusher) 215r.
2) probes for checking gaps 75r.
3) syringe (for pumping oil out of the valve stem)
4) nippers (medical or manicure will do)
5) adjusting washers (buy after calculating the gaps)
6) valve gasket cover. 120r
7) pen, piece of paper
8) key for 10 and 8
9) screwdriver

a few more words about the gasket, for sure everyone who threw off the valve cover, the situation of oil snot from under it is familiar, so now, I had the same, I bought ordinary black gaskets, but then I came across information that there is a miracle gasket from Balakovo (BRT, RTI) red, silicone, I found it, bought it, and it’s true, I’ve been driving it for two days now and there’s no hint of smudges. I advise, here is a photo of her.

sequence of action:

1) take off the valve cover.
2) we reduce the pulley marks of the camshaft and the rear timing cover
3) the sequence for checking the clearances is as follows, I will write the valve number in the first digit, the second number of teeth that will need to be shifted clockwise relative to the camshaft and rear cover marks (photo example of checking the clearance of 1 and 3 valves):

1, 3 valve 3 teeth.
- 5, 2 valve 13 teeth
- 8, 6 valve 24 teeth
- 4, 7 valve 36 teeth
fists visually should look up and slightly at the face of the car

clearance standards: (DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE DOWN WHICH PROBE INCLUDED)

outlet valve: 0.35mm (i.e. the dipstick marked 35, should go into the 1st valve with a slight pinch)
inlet valve: 0.20mm (i.e. the dipstick marked 20 should fit into the 3rd valve with slight pinching)

Thus, we check all 8 valves with probes, a tolerance of 0.05 mm is allowed!
but I still recommend adjusting the exhaust valves if they are pinched by 0.05mm.
and another rule: It is better when the valve is loosened by 0.05 than overtightened.

1 clap. - 0.25 at normal (0.35)
3 - 0.20 (0.20)
5 - 0,40 (0.35)
2 - 0.20 (0.20)
8 - 0.35 (0.35)
6 - 0.20 (0.20)
4 - 0,30 (0.35)
7 - 0.15 (0.20)
total: 1, 5, 4, valves need to be adjusted. (5,4,7 optional)

((an example of a photo of the location of the flag and the rod on the 5th valve, because on the first one it is not visible due to the camshaft lining, the washer from the first valve))

and calculate the thickness of the new washer, which we need to supply, using the formula:
H = B + (A-C). mm.
H- thickness of the new washer
B - thickness of the removed washer
A - measured clearance with a feeler gauge
C - nominal clearance (norm)

example: H = 3.37+ (0.25 - 0.35) = 3.27 = 327

thus, we consider all the shaibs that need to be regulated.

Go to the store
-we buy new washers
-we put tweezers in the groove
-press the handle with a pusher on the bar
-remove the box holder
-check again with a probe
-turn the crankshaft and proceed to the next valve.

after adjusting all the valves, wipe the block in the place of the gasket from dirt and oil, wipe the groove of the valve cover in the place of the gasket, throw in a new gasket and put everything in place.

and to complete the ritual, a drop of blood on the engine, without it everything would be smarky 😀

The gas distribution mechanism of the engine on a VAZ-2115 car is an adjustable design, which means that periodically it is necessary to set the required valve clearance using adjusting washers. It is necessary to carry out this procedure at the slightest knock in the cylinder head or every 45 thousand kilometers.

The frequency of valve adjustment on the VAZ-2115

The manufacturer regulates to carry out these works every 45 thousand run.

But quite often it becomes necessary to adjust them much earlier, for many reasons.

This indicator is primarily due to the quality of domestic spare parts, which wear out rather quickly under ideal operating conditions.

Adjustment of valves

The appearance of a metallic knock at the top of a running engine, very similar to the sound sewing machine will mean an increased clearance between the camshaft cam and the valve tappet. This is caused by increased wear of the installed shim or camshaft cam.... If such a sound appears, it is necessary to adjust the valves as soon as possible, which will avoid big problems.

Much depends on engine oil quality , which has a significant effect on the degree of wear of the parts of the power unit.

The use of high-quality oil guarantees good lubricity of parts, which will significantly extend the life of the camshaft and other engine components.

In this case, the need to adjust the valves occurs when the mileage is 30-35 thousand kilometers, and it is quite possible that it will only be necessary to measure the values of the valve tappet clearances.

Why do you need to adjust the valve

Correct valve tappet clearance ensures stable work power unit on full power... The valves are divided into two types:

Conclusion

Many owners of a VAZ-2115 car do not show due attention to the state of the valve tappet clearances, as a result of which they are exposed to increased wear of internal parts, which, at a minimum, will lead to costly cylinder head repairs.

Timely adjustment will allow power unit work correctly and prolongs its service life.
