When to change the primary fuel filter. Where and when to change the fuel filter. What is required to replace the fuel filter

the main / Terms

The fuel line is in the form of a cartridge and contains a special filter paper. A fuel filter can be found in most internal combustion engines.

Why do you need a fuel filter?

If the fuel that is poured into the car is not of the best quality, then there is a high probability that it contains many all kinds of impurities. Paint, dirt and rust can cause rapid wear and damage to the fuel pump and injectors. It is the abrasive effect of these particles that is detrimental to the high-precision components of the injection system. The quality of the fuel used also affects how much fuel filters installed in the car. For instance, gasoline engines manufacturers usually equip one filter, while diesel ones - two.

Varieties of fuel filters depending on the type of engine

Before talking about how the fuel filter works, you need to figure out what type of engine is installed on your car.

  • The carburetor engine features low pressure in fuel system... The fuel flows through rubber hoses. The fuel filter in such engines is usually made of metal or plastic. On one side there is an inlet pipe, and on the other, an outlet. The hose is connected to the filter at both ends with round clamps.
  • The injection engine features electronic fuel injection into each of the cylinders. The fuel in this case is under high pressure. For this reason, the fuel lines are made of metal, and the fuel filter is made of steel or other light-alloy metals and, as a rule, is equipped with a threaded connection.
  • Diesel fuel should be cleaned from various impurities in the best possible way. Paraffins, which can become crystals and clog gaps between parts as small as 6 micrometers, are also dangerous. For this reason, along with the main fuel filter, it is recommended to install on diesel engine also additional. Such a tandem will make it possible to 100% clean the fuel from water and 96% from dirt.

How the fuel filter works

Some vehicles have two types of fuel filters installed at once. One of them is for rough cleaning the other is for the thin one.

  • The coarse filter has a mesh element, which consists of a reflector and a brass mesh that does not allow particles larger than 0.1 mm to pass through. This type of filter is intended for cleaning fuel from various large impurities. The filter element is placed inside the glass, which is fixed to the body by means of a pressure ring and bolts. The gap between the glass and the body is closed with a paronite gasket. At the very bottom of this glass, there is a special soothing device.
  • The fine filter is the second barrier for removing debris from the fuel. It can usually be found and fuel tank... As a rule, such a filter is wrapped in a nylon case, which immediately shows the degree of its contamination. This device is capable of retaining particles up to 15 micrometers in size, thanks to two parallel filter elements.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter:

  1. The car jerks when going uphill.
  2. The power has decreased markedly.
  3. The engine stalls.
  4. High fuel consumption.
  5. Auto twitches when driving.

Where is the fuel filter located?

If you plan to change the fuel filter yourself, then you need to know where it is. In modern cars, this part can be found in one of the following locations:

  1. under the bottom of the car,
  2. in the fuel tank,
  3. in the engine compartment.
The fuel filter can be changed without resorting to the services of professionals, however, if you doubt your capabilities, it is better to ask for help from more experienced drivers. Experts recommend changing the fuel filter every 30,000 kilometers. However, if you fill in low quality fuel, then you need to do this more often.

How do I change the fuel filter?

Before changing the fuel filter, you must prepare at least a minimum set of tools, such as:
  • lamp,
  • wrench,
  • screwdriver,
  • pliers,
  • socket wrench,
  • protective glasses,
  • disposable gloves.
In most cases, such a set of tools can be completely dispensed with, but there are cars, special tools are required in the fuel filter. For this reason, before the procedure, try to find as much information as possible on replacing the fuel filter in your particular car model. You will also need a new fuel filter. When buying it, inform the seller of the car, as well as the year of its production. Give preference to original parts. Fuel filter manufacturers such as ACDelco, Motorcraft and Fram are well established on the market today.
  • Change the fuel filter outdoors, as fuel vapors may accumulate indoors and may cause a fire.
  • Prepare a fire extinguisher before work, just in case.
  • Do not smoke or change the fuel filter near open flames.
  • If the pressure in the fuel system is high, then it must be reduced before replacing it.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid sparking.

Change the fuel filter to Lada Kalina

Fuel filters are not alike. For this reason, the algorithm for replacing them will also be different. As an example, we have chosen a fairly common car - Lada Kalina.

  1. First, it is necessary to reduce the pressure in the fuel system. To do this, remove the fuel pump fuse - near the gearbox lever, remove the plastic cover with a screwdriver, you only need to remove the central fuse block.
  2. We start the engine and wait until it stalls, it will take no more than a minute.
  3. Now we move to the rear wheel, where the fuel filter is. It can be found on the right, next to the fuel tank.
  4. We press on the clips and unfasten the fuel hoses.
  5. We take out the old filter.
  6. By setting new filter, make sure that the arrow on it coincides with the direction of fuel movement.
After installing the new fuel filter, screw on the fuse and start the car. The engine will not start the first time, you will need to wait until the pressure in the fuel system stabilizes.

The fuel filter is one of the most important units for any car. Experienced car enthusiasts need to know exactly where the filter is located to help improve the performance of the machine. Additional knowledge relates to the features of the operation of the unit, the need to replace it.

Renault Duster

Engines used for Renault Duster, are distinguished by an unpretentious attitude to the quality of the fuel used. The possibility of using gasoline and diesel fuel is envisaged. The offered filter is characterized by a high level of quality, due to which the possibility of its long-term operation is guaranteed. Most car enthusiasts successfully refuse the need to replace the filter, regardless of the type of fuel used.

Despite the high level of reliability, in some cases the filter still fails, and its replacement becomes mandatory. The installation of a new unit can be successfully handled by a motorist.

When wondering where the fuel filter on the Renault Duster is located, only one answer can be provided: in the gas pump. The filter is made in the form of a mesh. However, experienced Duster owners recommend taking care of installing a full-fledged fuel filter in the engine compartment, since a dummy is initially located in the right place.

Installation instructions for additional fuel filter

Installation takes place in two stages:

  1. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the clamps of the branch pipes, with a hexagon - fastening the part to the car body.
  2. At the next stage, the pipes are connected and the filter is removed. It is changed to a new one, which is installed in reverse order.

If you plan to install an engine located under the rear seat, it is recommended to initially fold the seat and remove the small hatch. Now you can see the terminal and the pipes responsible for supplying power and fuel to the filter. Before carrying out the work, it is recommended to reduce the pressure of the fuel system, otherwise the owner of the machine may face unnecessary risks under the influence of fuel injection. Only after preparatory measures, the filter housing is unscrewed and the element is dismantled. Then the fuel is drained and the unit is replaced with a new device.

Attention! After that, the vehicle is assembled with a further check of the tightness of the installation.

Reasons for clogging the fuel cleaning unit

Filter clogging can occur with any engine. In most cases, this situation occurs if low-quality or unsuitable fuel with foreign particles is used to refuel the car. Application of quality diesel fuel or gasoline reduces the risks associated with engine malfunction.

Signs of a clogged filter:

If there are unwanted problems with the Renault Duster, it is best to replace the filter parts. In addition, you can cope with the task on your own.

Renault Logan

An obligatory task is to understand where the fuel filter on Renault-Logan is located and the nuances of replacing it for the further successful use of cars.

Timeliness Maintenance- this is one of the most important tasks of the car owner. To keep the machine in good condition, it is recommended that you install a fuel filter regularly. However, where is the fuel filter on the Renault Logan? It all depends on the year of manufacture of the car.

  1. On the first generation Logan (2005-2006), you can find a filter near the gas tank at the place where the fuel pipes go out. For this reason, you need to focus on right side rear wheel area.
  2. On cars built after the third quarter of 2006, the fuel filter is located right in the gas tank where the pump can be found. This option guarantees the maximum level of reliability, as a result of which the car is ready to serve successfully and efficiently.

Understanding where the fuel filter on the Renault-Logan is located allows you to navigate the further replacement process.

Features of replacing the fuel filter

The first mandatory step is preparing for the installation of a new fuel filter. During the operation of any engine, the fuel is under constant pressure, which is maintained for two to three hours after the power unit stops. Replacement is best done only after a couple of hours have passed. If there is no possibility of waiting for a favorable moment, the pressure from the fuel line must be relieved.

How to lower unnecessarily high blood pressure:

  1. At the very beginning, the rear seat is raised and the wiring block on the gas pump is disconnected vehicle.
  2. Then they start the engine and wait for the remaining fuel to burn out.
  3. After the motor has stalled on its own, it is turned with a starter for several seconds. It is this stage that denotes a decrease in operating pressure.
  4. It is now allowed to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  5. After the pressure has been relieved, dismantling can be carried out.

To replace the fuel filter, work is carried out on both sides with fittings fixed with tips and red, green clips. The order in which the pipes are removed does not play any role, but it is best to be guided by the arrow located on the filter housing. The arrow indicates the direction of the fuel. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling.

After replacing all the components of the fuel wire and the terminals to the battery, the system is filled with fuel. To do this, turn on the ignition for a few seconds. During short-term operation of the pump, check the tightness of the filter, nozzles, clamps. Regular replacement of all units guarantees the possibility of successful and safe travel by car, because it is assumed that the reliability of the technical system will be maintained.

It is important to remember the tasks of the fuel filter. So, this device is required for the successful cleaning of gasoline or diesel from the following components:

  • deposits;
  • mud;
  • rust.

Taking into account the poor quality of the fuel used, it can be understood how important it becomes to use a properly functioning and functional filter. The manufacturer recommends performing replacement procedures every 120 thousand kilometers. However, if low-quality fuel is used, an event is recommended every 50-60 thousand kilometers.

Chevrolet cruze

Chevrolet cruze is one of the most popular cars. This particular machine has earned an ideal reputation thanks to high level reliability and optimal technical specifications... However, in order to celebrate all its benefits, it is imperative to keep the fuel system in top condition.

So where is the fuel filter on the Chevrolet Cruze and what approach is required to keep it in good working order? It is interesting to note that Chevrolet does not fit an element such as a fuel filter. A full-fledged unit in the Cruze is replaced with a conventional mesh responsible for filtering the fuel used. The mesh can be conventionally called a fuel filter.

Automotive manufacturer notes that the fuel pump is installed for the entire life of the vehicle. For this reason, its replacement is impractical. Despite this, the poor quality of diesel fuel and gasoline in Russia contributes to the need to know where the fuel filter is located and how to change it.

When to change the fuel filter mesh

  • lack of well-coordinated motor work;
  • loss of power of the power unit and a feeling of "failures" when pressing the gas pedal;
  • decrease in the dynamics of the machine;
  • jerking when you press the gas pedal sharply.

All four of the above signs are enough to start thinking about replacing the filter mesh. In most cases, the installation of a new grid is recommended after 60 thousand kilometers.

How to replace

Before holding an event on your own, it is recommended to carefully study the instructions in order to know not only where the fuel filter is located, but also to successfully cope with the replacement.

The first step is preparation. Only after appropriate preparatory measures can the procedure for replacing the filter (mesh) be carried out. It is best to use a Genuine Chevrolet product, but you can also choose domestic products... Given the different opinions, it can be understood that the choice depends only on the preferences of the motorist. Domestic filter nets are always produced taking into account the features Russian fuel therefore their service can be long and successful.

It is recommended to carry out the main work before relieving the pressure in the fuel system. To do this, turn off the ignition and dismantle the block fuse. After completing the task, you need to let the motor run for a while. Only after the car stalls can the pressure be released.

So, how to carry out further measures to replace the filter:

  1. There is no hatch for the Chevrolet Cruze fuel pump, so in order to get to it, you will have to dismantle the entire tank.
  2. Wires are connected to the pump using a harness, which must be carefully disconnected.
  3. Now it will be possible to see several nozzles through which fuel enters and leaves the pump. Detach the branch pipes with clamps with a flat screwdriver.
  4. In the next step, detach the fuel pump cover, acting extremely carefully and turning the fixing disc counterclockwise. Unscrew the fixing disc, and then the pump.
  5. There are connectors on the fuel pump that need to be disconnected. In addition, four latches are squeezed from the body.
  6. The top of the fuel pump should be removed without problems.
  7. If the engine problems are caused by the filter mesh, dirt may be noted. Cleaning the part will not help, so the mesh will have to be replaced and all parts reinstalled in reverse order.

Successful replacement of the filter mesh on the Chevrolet Cruze can even be done by yourself!

Kia rio

One of the most important questions is where is the fuel filter on the Kia Rio? This question is asked by many motorists, because Kia rio is comfortable and dignified modern car capable of pleasing with its dynamics. For the successful use of the engine, it is recommended to replace it every 2 years or every 60 thousand kilometers traveled. Checking the fuel filter is desirable once a year or every 30 thousand kilometers. If not advised, unwanted particles from the fuel will foul injectors and worsen technical specifications cars. In addition, the symptoms of a dirty fuel filter lead to a disruption in the functionality of the engine, which is forced to work for wear and tear.

Self-replacement capabilities

The event can be held independently or at a service station. In the first case, you will be able to save money, but in the second case you still have to pay for the procedure. It should be noted the compact size of the fuel filter and the efficiency of the procedure.

The first stage is to reduce the pressure of the fuel system:

  • engaging the gearbox in neutral and hand brake;
  • removing the pillow back seat, hatch covers from the fuel tank;
  • wringing out the latch to disconnect the block of wires;
  • starting the engine to generate fuel residues;
  • turning on the starter for a few seconds.

It is now allowed to remove the old fuel filter:

  • the clips are gently squeezed;
  • the pipelines are disconnected from the filter;
  • release the clamp;
  • pull out the filter.

Now you need to install a new filter, performing all the steps in reverse order.

If, nevertheless, cooperation with a service station becomes the preferred option, you need to count on a minimum price of 1,500 rubles. This cost is due to the ease and speed of work.

Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla is a car in which a fuel filter guarantees uninterrupted and long-term engine service. The design of the original device is different from other variations of the device. In this case, the performance features always depend on the Corolla modification.

It is possible to carry out replacement measures every 50-100 thousand kilometers.

So, what is the difference between the original fuel filters for Toyota Corolla?

  • the device is created on the basis of honeycombs, which guarantee successful fuel filtration
  • the plastic body of the fuel supply unit is the basis of the filter element (thus, being interested in where the fuel filter on the Toyota Corolla is located, it can be noted that its location is the fuel unit);
  • for fuel purification, traditional paper parts are used, as well as fiberglass with polyester.

Even modern and reliable use of the filter does not guarantee a long service life. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, replacement is recommended every 80 thousand kilometers, but this information is approximate.

In the domestic market, they can offer at least three types of fuel filters for Toyota Corolla. Products come from the original brand, Chinese and Korean manufacturers. In this case, you need to choose a fuel filter that is suitable for Toyota car Corolla, taking into account the type of model (before or after 2007). Until 2007, the mandatory replacement of the fuel pump with a filter is provided; since 2008, separate installation of filter parts is allowed.

Ford Focus III

IN Ford focus III fuel filter, a fuel pump is installed, which is located in the tank. This tricky arrangement immediately makes it difficult to replace the device yourself.

In this case, you need to know not only where the Ford Focus 3 fuel filter is located, but also the features of its design. The car has a non-separable fuel pump, therefore, it is planned to replace not only the filter mesh, but also the pump. Many car enthusiasts go against the American manufacturer, but such work is always risky and it is still better to focus on official recommendations.

So, knowing where the fuel filter is on the car, you can foresee the possibility of it self replacement and take care of a clear understanding of all the tips, each stage of the upcoming work. Only proper maintenance will keep the technical condition of any machine in perfect order.

The petrol filter is an integral part of the vehicle's fuel system. Today we will tell you where the element is located, how often the fuel filter is replaced, and what symptoms and signs indicate its failure.

Description

The purpose of the fuel filter (FF) is to filter out dust particles and contaminants, to prevent them from entering the engine fuel system. In the absence of a cleaning element in the system, dust and other harmful components clog and disable the fuel system.

Sectional fuel filter: 1 - filter element for injection cars, 2 - its body

The filtration process consists of two or more degrees of purification (depending on the structure of the filter and its production). The first degree is called coarse, because it manages to sift out large particles of dirt that have entered the gas tank along with the fuel. The second is a fine filter, which is located somewhere between the gas tank and the vehicle's engine (this “somewhere” may be in different places, depending on the car).

Filters differ in their design. They are set based on the type of fuel system. There are three types:

  • carburetor;
  • injection;
  • diesel.

Specificity diesel filters lies in the fact that the type of such a motor is very vulnerable, so the fuel for the systems must be purified as much as possible. In this case, the fuel of the car goes through three degrees of purification - in the gas tank, and then coarse and fine cleaning. The purpose is to prevent water from entering the combustion chamber. Considering these factors, it becomes clear why a high-quality TF for diesel car costs an order of magnitude more expensive than a cleaning element for gasoline engine.

Diesel TF: 1 - diesel, 2 - pump emulsion, 3 - dirt removal, 4 - clean fuel with condensate residues, 5 - hydrophobic material, 6 - moisture settler

By design, filters can be of two types: prefabricated and non-demountable. If a non-separable gasoline cleaning component is installed in the car, then in case of its unsuitability, complete replacement fuel filter. Prefabricated TFs do not require full shift- it is enough to replace the filter element.

Remember: a correctly selected TF specifically for the car model will save fuel and increase the frequency of its replacement. If a component is not replaced in a timely manner, the consequences for the fuel system can be dire.

If you do not know where the fuel filter is located and what is the frequency of its change, read the instruction manual. We can say that in most diesel and carburetor cars, the filter is located in the engine compartment. The components for cleaning gasoline in injection cars are located under the bottom of the car (if the filter is not collapsible), or under the rear seat. In this case, the TF is located directly in the fuel pump and its replacement consists in replacing the fuel pump mesh.

Injection fuel filters do not corrode as they are made of aluminum or plastic alloys.

Collapsible TF

How often do you need to change

If you do not know when to change the filter and how much a car will drive on it, then only the operating instructions or recommendations will help authorized dealer... In any case, it all depends solely on the transport and the conditions of its operation.

Given the dustiness of domestic roads and the far from the best quality of gasoline, at least 10 thousand km must be subtracted from the interval indicated in the manual. That is, if the frequency of replacing a clogged filter in the instructions for the car is every 40 thousand kilometers, then it needs to be changed every 30 thousand kilometers.

Masters at service stations advise changing the fuel filter every 20-25 thousand kilometers, no matter how much the manufacturer recommends.

If the frequency of changing the cleaning element was not observed or it is heavily clogged, then the engine may not start at all. Certain breakdown symptoms, manifested through a high mileage of a car on a clogged TF, may indicate a component failure.

The following are the symptoms and signs that gasoline is not passing through the fuel filter:

  • uneven operation of the engine ("troit" machine);
  • from time to time the car loses power during the period of movement;
  • when driving at low speeds, when the pedal is pressed, the car stalls, no matter how much it is "drowned" on the floor;
  • incorrect gear shifting (in the case of an automatic gearbox: incorrectly transmits engine commands to gear shifting and carries them out at the wrong time);
  • increased fuel consumption.

Symptoms indicate a filter failure process. If they do not appear, you will find out about the malfunction of the cleaning component when the car does not start in the morning.

Replacement process

Without the experience or knowledge of replacing a part, you will harm the auto system. Installing a fuel filter is a relatively simple process, following the steps in the instructions, a novice car enthusiast will also cope with it.

What to cook?

If the component is located under the bottom of the car, you will need to drive into the pit. Before removing it, prepare:

  • a new cleaning element (buy those filters that are made by the car manufacturer, or that it advises to install);
  • set of wrenches;
  • slotted and Phillips screwdriver;
  • rags.

Let's start replacing

The instructions describe the process of changing a non-separable fuel filter for any car. Depending on the design features transport, there may be some differences in the process. If an element is installed in the car with a fuel pump, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the recommendations from the manufacturer. Companies advise changing the filter along with the fuel pump.

  1. Decide on the location of the TF. In diesel and carburetor cars, the part is located in the engine compartment, either under the bottom or in a tank with a gasoline pump (in gasoline cars).
  2. Regardless of the location, remove the fuel pump fuse and wait until the car stalls. This is done to relieve pressure in the system.
  3. Now, to prevent fire during the replacement process, remove the negative terminal of the battery.
  4. Install the new component in the same position in which the old one was installed (the arrow on the filter will help, showing the direction of gasoline).
  5. Connect the gas line after checking the integrity of the pipe. If the tube is damaged, replace it.
  6. Now it remains to replace the fuel pump fuse and connect the battery terminals.
  7. Try to start the car. This may not work the first time because the pressure in the system has been released. Turn on the ignition for 30-60 seconds, then try to start.

Attention! Pay attention to safety! Do not smoke indoors when replacing the fuel filter. It is also advisable to ventilate the garage.

Self-replacement of a car fuel filter - video

The fuel filter has an important function in a car. Although it looks clear and clean, gasoline can be dissolved in a large amount of any dirt, which eventually settles on the bottom of the tank or on the fuel filter.

It is recommended to change the filter after 20-40 thousand kilometers. If you do not do this, then all the dirt can get into the fuel sediment, the carburetor, and settle on the walls of the liners and pistons. Accordingly, you will face a more complex and expensive process of repairing the fuel system and the entire engine.

Any car model goes detailed instructions where the location of the filter is indicated. It can be located either near the fuel tank or directly under the hood. Before removing a clogged filter, make sure that there is no pressure in the fuel system. For this you need:

  • remove the fuel pump fuse;
  • start the car and wait until it stops working;
  • remove the negative terminal of the battery.

After that, you can safely proceed to removing the old filter. It is usually secured with two clamps or special plastic clips. It is attached to the fuel pipes using fittings. Each model has its own mounting features, therefore, when removing the filter, remember how it stood and which tube was screwed to what.

The fuel filters have an arrow indicating which direction the fuel should flow. According to it, you need to install a new filter. Understand which tube goes from the tank, and which one leads to the gas pump and to the engine. IN modern models the auto filter will simply not fall into place if installed incorrectly.

The filter must be supplied with plastic clips or clamps. Feel free to throw away the old ones, because they weaken over time. Insert the fuel line fittings and tighten all nuts securely. When the filter is in place, insert the pump fuse back and reinstall the negative terminal.

If the engine does not start the first time, it does not matter, this is a common occurrence after the pressure in the fuel system is released. It will definitely start after several attempts. Check the integrity of the fasteners and for leaks. Do not forget to wipe everything well and remove all rags and gloves soaked in fuel.

If you are a car owner with experience, then you probably faced such a problem as the need to replace petrol filter... This element of the car's structure is responsible for screening out all debris, rust particles, dust, and also retains all dirt, preventing it from entering the fuel system line. Have component parts the filter has an extremely small cross-section, so the accumulated debris will sooner or later clog the filter, and, therefore, it will have to be replaced. You can do this with your own hands in the garage, without resorting to trips to car services.

Petrol filter malfunctions

Fuel filtration in a car takes place in two stages: rough cleaning, during which all more or less large particles are removed, followed by fine cleaning. It will be about fine filters, which are located between the fuel tank and the engine.

The vast majority of car manufacturers that produce products in modern market, claim that the fuel filter that is installed in their car will last for the entire period of operation of the car. But such a result can only be obtained under laboratory conditions. In practice, a completely different situation is observed. The condition of the gasoline filter is strongly affected by the quality of the fuel, as well as the amount and structure of the debris that enters the system. You can neglect this type of repair, but what is it fraught with?

The consequences are really serious, since the load on the filter increases due to the clogged filter, that is, the time of its operation is reduced. In addition, a clogged filter causes the engine to malfunction, as fuel is not supplied to the system as it should. That is, the car begins to triple, it may stall at any moment, or it may not start at all. There are also problems with gear shifting, since the automatic transmission in the automatic transmission incorrectly interprets the engine commands regarding gear shifting, therefore, either does not change gear at all, or does it at the wrong time.

It makes sense to list clear signs, thanks to which you can determine exactly whether the fuel filter is clogged or not:

1) The engine of the car runs unevenly, that is, the car "troit";

2) Periodically, while driving, the power of the car drops;

3) When moving at low speeds, the car stalls after pressing the pedal, even if you press it hard to the floor;

4) The speeds are switched incorrectly, that is, at the wrong time;

5) Increased fuel consumption.

These are the symptoms of a disease called "clogged gasoline filter". But even if this does not happen with your car, then be prepared for the fact that one morning the car may not start. The problem is that these signs in the early stages of the "disease" are very difficult to notice, and therefore there are sudden troubles.

It should be disassembled with one more question - what is the frequency of replacing the gasoline filter? The manual for your car will probably indicate a figure of 40 thousand km. So, at least 10 thousand km should be subtracted from this figure, since both the roads in our country and the quality of the supplied fuel leave much to be desired. Turns out that a new petrol filter must be installed after driving a car for a maximum of 30 - 35 thousand km. Service specialists generally perform this procedure after 20-25 thousand km, despite the manufacturer's recommendations.

Petrol Filter Replacement Tools

Basically, replacing a petrol filter is not a daunting task. It's all about patience and knowledge of the intricacies of this operation. First of all, you need to figure out which tools you need to prepare in order to make a replacement. If the filter is located under the bottom of the car, then you will have to drive the car to inspection pit... Before removing the element, you need to prepare the following materials:

1) A new gasoline filter, and you need to buy a product made by the manufacturer of your car, or the filter that, according to the recommendations of the same manufacturer, is suitable for your brand;

2) Spanners;

3) Phillips and slotted screwdrivers;

4) A piece of rags.

When buying a new gasoline filter, you need to check the compliance of the new element with the following parameters:

1) Filtration level. If this indicator is not met enough, then large particles will still enter the system along with the fuel, and this is fraught with rapid engine breakdown;

2) The area of the filtering surface, the presence of a rubber seal, which will block the inlet directly to the filter. If there is no insulation, then such a filter will be difficult to replace in the future.

In general, fine filters, depending on the fuel system, are:

1) Carburetor. Their permissible degree of cleaning is 15-20 microns, that is, smaller particles will enter the system, but they will not cause serious damage to the motor;

2) Injection. The degree of purification is 5 - 10 microns. In such a system, the requirements for the maximum acceptable size polluting particles above. It turns out that injectors can get clogged with larger particles, so the holes in the filters for them are made smaller.

Be sure to tell the consultant the make of your car, as well as the year of its production. This will help you choose the right filter. In principle, if a filter is not available for your particular car model, then you can find a suitable replacement.

It is imperative to follow all safety rules, since you have to work with combustible materials. Gasoline may leak during the process, so the area where you plan to work should be well ventilated. Before starting work, you must:

1) De-energize the car by removing all terminals from the battery;

2) Do not smoke or carry out the procedure near sources of fire;

3) You need to prepare a fire extinguisher in advance (just in case);

4) If gasoline gets on your skin, wash it off immediately with soapy water.

In addition, it is imperative to relieve the pressure in the gas line, since you have to work with the fuel system. In order to do this, you need to put the car on the handbrake and turn on the "neutral", after which it is necessary to remove or move back seat, open the hatch, which is located under the seat on the bottom of the car, disconnect the connector to turn off the fuel supply line. After that, start the engine and wait until all the gasoline is gone from the engine. The car should stall by itself. Try to start the car again to make sure that the fuel pressure has disappeared.

There is another way to release the pressure. Remove the "negative" wire from the battery, then remove the fuse F3 located in mounting block... This fuse is responsible for supplying power to the fuel pump. Start the engine to bleed off any fuel in the engine. After the pressure has been released, you will need to return the fuse to its place.

Features of replacing the gasoline filter

Replacing the fuel filter can be complicated because the fuel system is different cars designed in different ways. There are brands in which the filter is located so conveniently that you can replace it without using tools, but there are also such machines in which the filter is literally hidden. This element can be fixed with special clamps or spring clamps, that is, improvised means in this case will not help at all. Before getting started, take a good look at how your car's fuel system is designed.

The instructions described below are somewhat universal, but differences in the process may be due to the nature of the fuel system. If the manufacturer installed the filter together with the gas pump, then it would be better to replace the last element as well.

So, in order to remove the old fuel filter, you must:

1) Find out where the filter itself is located. If the car is carbureted, then the filter element is located under the hood or under the bottom, and in the case of a gasoline car, the filter will be in the tank with a fuel pump.

2) Regardless of where the filter is located, relieve the pressure in the fuel system in advance (as mentioned above).

3) De-energize the machine by removing the "-" terminal of the battery.

Removing the fuel filter:

1) Carefully inspect the fuel filter and determine exactly how it is attached to the gas line (mounts can be exhaust or intake). Retainers can be in the form of bolts or latches. It is very important to remember the sequence in which all the parts are located, so as not to get confused during installation. You can take a photo of the installation site, so that later it would be easier to restore the whole picture.

2) Take a pre-prepared piece of rags and wrap it around the filter, as a small amount of gasoline will come out of it. Use a wrench or Phillips screwdriver to disconnect the fuel filter and fasteners. After that, the element can be removed.

Installing a new filter:

1) Install the new filter in the position in which the old element was located (the arrow on the filter will help you, it shows the direction of gasoline movement).

2) Connect the gas line, do not forget to check the branch pipe for breaks before doing this. If it is damaged, then it will have to be replaced.

3) Reinstall the fuel pump fuse and connect the terminals on the battery.

4) Start your car. Most likely, this will not work on the first attempt due to the deflated pressure in the fuel system. Leave the ignition on for 30 - 60 seconds, then try to start the engine again.

As you can see, even an inexperienced car owner can replace the fuel filter. Follow the instructions above and you should be good to go.
