It is not clear: either the golden ratio has already been found in this segment, from which there is no point in retreating, or Toyota and Mazda engineers are creating their crossovers with an eye on each other. If we remove the stylistic nuances, then we get almost twins: similar sizes, similar design. Basic front-wheel drive, AWD AWD, manual or automatic transmission, 2 or 2.5 liter atmospheric engines... The only difference is in the nuances: Toyota also has versions with a variator, and Mazda motors- these are not ordinary aspirated ones, but the Skyactiv line with high degree compression 14: 1. And, of course, the prices are different.


Toyota's crossover does not shine with exquisite design, but many people like this style.

Toyota RAV4 can be either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. For her, two atmospheric gasoline engine volume of 2 and 2.5 liters (146 and 180 horsepower) and as many as three types of transmissions: 6-speed manual, variator or 6-range automatic. And six configurations to choose from.

Well, maybe there are only complaints about the glossy finish of the center console: we would have preferred something else so as not to admire our fingerprints.

The first thing you notice in a Toyota cabin is a radically different atmosphere. It is lighter here, the driver's seat can be lowered much lower, and in general there is more space around the driver - this will certainly be appreciated by large people. However, the design is as peculiar as the appearance - at first glance it is even impossible to remember this seemingly chaotic set of lines, edges, angles ...

However, this did not affect ergonomics - the fit is comfortable, the visibility is excellent. There are only questions about the key arrangement system: it would be logical to place all the control buttons for off-road functions in one place. But no, the center clutch is locked on the left under the steering wheel, the hill descent assistant is turned on on the right. And the buttons and keys themselves are made of assorted plastic, as if they were collected from the world on a string.


At the rear, the Mazda CX-5 is slightly tighter than the rival, but it has a more comfortable seat.

Hey, where's the backrest tilt adjustment? The price list of the Mazda CX-5 indicates that it is, but in fact ... Let's just say, in fact, it is vanishingly small: the backrest can be folded back literally by 2-3 cm. Mazda has a smaller trunk, but the curtain is very comfortable. You just don't notice it - it rises with the door. All three parts of the rear sofa can be folded straight out of the trunk - just pull the handle and part of the backrest folds forward by itself. Comfortable! But there are also disadvantages: there is no lining on the bumper, the lower edge is located noticeably higher, the opening is narrower. The volume is also smaller - 442 liters. Hmm, practicality is clearly not Mazda's strong point.

The Mazda CX-5's hobbyhorse is emotionality. The striking design is matched with equally flamboyant and thrilling handling that becomes especially brilliant in extreme conditions. And the "fault" is the proprietary system G-Vectoring Control, which, using the control of brakes and traction, helps to minimize the effect of understeer. On bends, which the driver clearly wants to pass at the limit of grip (holding the gas), G-Vectoring Control provides an effect similar to a steered rear axle - sometimes there is a feeling that the rear wheels are deflected a few degrees in the direction opposite to the turn.

Mazda CX-5 gives no less positive emotions in quiet modes. As promised in press releases before the release of the model, the Japanese engineers took into account all the wishes of the owners of the CX-5 and the new generation retained its excitement, but at the same time it became quieter and smoother. To eliminate the first drawback, literally the entire underbody of the car, including wheel arches, covered with a noise-insulating mat - and now aerodynamic noises and the sound of "sandblasting" are reduced to a minimum. Although the sound of the engine during active acceleration can still be called loud.

Here's what else you need to know to Toyota owner RAV4 before going off-road, so this is the exact value ground clearance... Since this data may surprise him greatly: in the 2.5-liter version, the exhaust system goes under the engine, leaving only about 160 mm to the ground! So be careful.

But in the sand, where there is no way to damage the exhaust, the RAV4 felt like the king of the off-road. Beautiful, expensive and gambling Mazda or practical, roomy and passable Toyota?

Despite all the similarities, the buyers of the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 are still different. By nature, Mazda is a windy beauty that can turn your head with its incredible design, almost premium interior and very reckless handling. But this will have to put up with a tighter trunk and limited off-road capabilities. Although who cares when emotions are raging?

But Toyota RAV4 - on the contrary, the choice of zealous and rational people. Designed over the years, spacious interior, large trunk balanced driving performance- only the design can confuse it. But if you don't care about it, but off-road qualities are at least minimally important, then definitely Toyota RAV4.
