The character is still the same

I don't know how the budget modification will go with mechanical box and rear-wheel drive, but the all-wheel drive coupe I got with an automatic is worthy of commendation. The suspension also shows its own character. Most powerful sports coupe do not indulge in comfort. Of course, the smooth ride of the two-door CTS is difficult to compare with family cars. But you can't call it uncompromisingly tough - on irregularities it behaves like a well-inflated ball: elastic, but without unpleasant blows and breakdowns.

Want it hotter?

Barely getting used to the usual coupe, I moved to more powerful version CTS-V. At first glance, sports attributes are visible: a different radiator grille, twin exhaust pipes and several new nameplates; inside - seats in the style of sports "buckets" and a steering wheel covered with suede. And from the second ... The car suppresses with a rolling roar from under the bottom and unrestrained traction of 564 "horses" of a 6.2-liter V8.

Choosing a powertrain is also simple - either you are an insane adrenaline maniac and get a 556-horsepower cross between a Cadillac and a Corvette, or be content with a pitiful 3.6-liter V 6. Our CTS is just in such a 311-horsepower modification. The box, of course, is "automatic", but only because our country did not supply six-cylinder options with "mechanics" that were available in other markets. Two-door Cadillac on the "handle"? This is the reality. Another unheard of thing for a coupe with a noble coat of arms on the radiator grille is the AWD all-wheel drive. What can you not do to get even with the “Germans”, who are densely settled in the premium.


Nevertheless, 311 forces and 371 Nm are decent indicators. The BMW 335i / E 92 and Mercedes-Benz E 350 / C 207 have similar characteristics. Nice cars, fast and light: even the Mercedes, which never particularly gravitates towards fitness, is lighter than the Cadillac by almost 200 kg, and the difference with the “Bavarian” is even greater. The six-speed "automatic" could be more jovial: hard pressing on gas causes a hitch, especially annoying when starting from a standstill. Thanks to the BorgWarner transfer case all-wheel drive, the CTS 3.6 AWD does not waste time slipping like the rear-wheel-drive cousin. Anyway, do not expect a gain in dynamics. The all-wheel drive transmission added another hundredweight to the already considerable mass, bringing the acceleration to 7.4 seconds. As a result, provoking the aforementioned "burghers" at a traffic light is more expensive for themselves - they can easily give a cocky-looking "Yankee" a second or two head start.


And to hell with them, with boyish entertainment. This is not a Cadillac case. The Americans made in a good sense an old-school large-capacity motor without any newfangled gadgets. And they did it. There is so much traction that Cadillac absolutely does not care at what speedometer mark to accelerate - at least from 80, at least from 150 km / h. Igor always chose cars only with his heart, and he fell in love with the CTS Coupe at first sight. Alas, the purchase at that time was irrelevant: Igor was already the owner of a two-year-old SRX of the second generation. But life has made its own adjustments. Repair

There were no serious problems with the Cadillac for four years of ownership, but the matter was not limited to only scheduled maintenance. With a run of 27,500 km, there was a knock in the steering wheel and a creak when reversing, and besides, the stove began to turn off on its own after 20 minutes of operation. Based on the results of the diagnostics, the steering shaft cardan was ordered, the front pads were replaced and the brakes were cleaned. With the stove, however, the situation did not become clear - they promised to figure it out at the next MOT. An unscheduled visit to the official service cost 17,000 rubles.


Before the end of the warranty, with a mileage of 48,000 km, there was another knock at the steering wheel, and when the right glass was lowered, a heartbreaking squeak began to be heard. The knock was cured by a new replacement of the steering shaft cardan. When disassembling, cleaning and lubricating the door (5,800 rubles), it turned out that it was necessary to change the window regulator mechanism, which was ordered under warranty.

Several times Igor took CTS to a dealer as part of a recall campaign. All the work was carried out free of charge, but Igor found out about their necessity on his own from the Internet - he did not receive any calls or invitations to the service from GM representatives in Russia.

Narrow gap rear window severely restricts the view back, and the rear view camera does not help out 100% of cases, especially at night and in slush, when the lens is quickly covered with dirt. The high sill line, in turn, limits visibility along the flanks.

Trunk volume of 298 liters, of course, is not a record figure, but we must not forget that this is a coupe. If you fold the back sofa, you get an almost flat floor, so the loading capabilities of the model are quite acceptable. Be that as it may, for the fantastic expressiveness of the design, the “American” can easily forgive ergonomic flaws.

Drive like a luxury

The days when Cadillac was associated with heavy, sluggish and lumpy cars are irrevocably gone. The CTS Coupe comes across as surprisingly docile and assembled machine... Directional stability is good at any speed and, in fact, on any road surface. On French highways and country roads of any quality, the car confidently kept its trajectory, despite the 19-inch wheels with low profile tires offered by default for rear wheel drive versions. However, 18-inch tires for Russian realities seem to be more the right choice... The suspension of the CTS Coupe does not like small and medium irregularities - the shiver from the abrasive asphalt is transmitted to the body, 18-inch wheels and a softer suspension option (basic for an all-wheel drive car) will make the ride more comfortable.

The sporty and civilian chassis settings in the CTS Coupe are cleverly balanced. On good trails, the car has excellent ride quality, but tends to have a slight, not too annoying vertical swing. The coupe's cornering behavior surprised me in a good way. No manifestation of what is commonly called "American" chassis settings. Rolls are minimized, a slight tendency to skid "stern" dampens ESP. It's a shame the steering settings don't quite match the sporty cornering behavior. Steering rack“Longish”, the reaction to turning the “steering wheel” is slightly inhibited, which is explained, again, by the priority of settings for a comfortable ride. At the same time, the steering wheel of the CTS Coupe is quite accurate, despite some lack of information in the near-zero zone, and is poured with effort at speeds above 100 km / h.
