Owning a Toyota Supra A70: like a Ferrari, only better. Dreams of Supra

home / Repair and maintenance

You know, it often happens with petrolheads (car enthusiasts) - I accidentally saw it in my childhood in a picture / on the street / on TV beautiful car and he immediately sunk into the soul for many years. I first met the "seventy" (third generation Supra) on the street next to the lyceum where I studied. I was in the 9th grade then. I remember as now that she was right-hand drive, in the back of a "coupe" (more precisely, a "three-door fastback") white and in pretty bad shape.

Unfortunately, the Supra was not my first car. I received the license immediately, as soon as I turned 18, but by that time I had not yet managed to accumulate the amount necessary to make my "dream" come true. This took me the next two years.

As a result, I found my Supra in one of the sleeping areas of Moscow. Judging by the description in the ad, the car was not in the best condition (the seller offered as an "option" new motor), and from the photographs it was safe to say that she also had an accident. It doesn't matter, I initially chose the car not as a collector, but as a person who is fond of tuning. That is, he was simply ready to replace 90% of the parts, the main thing is that the body is intact and not rusty.

The salesperson, a young guy in clothes dotted with the brand identity of a brand from Maranello, greeted me with the words:

- Hi, I'm Vova Ferrari. Ferrari is because I love Ferrari!

After a couple of unobtrusive questions, it became clear to me that Vova didn’t understand cars at all and that he treated Supra according to the principle of “throwing and throwing”.

- How did she get to you at all? - I asked a fan of the famous Italian brand.

- There was money, I walked around the Mytishchi car market, I saw - there is a car that looks like a Ferrari! - came the answer. - Well, I took it and bought it!

According to Vova, the Supra stopped starting. We opened the hood, found the oxidized terminals on the battery, cleaned them - and the two-liter in-line "six" of the 1G-GTE series immediately came to life, as soon as I turned the key in the lock. This machine suffered a lot at the hands of the previous owners, and I realized that I couldn't just take it and leave it. So I became the proud owner of a post-styled Toyota Supra in a wide-winged coupe, produced at a factory in Japan back in 1990.

Way home

Let me dot the i right away - I'm not some kind of "collective farmer", a lover of huge "towel dryers" and Sparco stickers on windshield... Airbrushing in the form of lightning on the sides and roof was inherited from Vova. And at the time of purchase, the car still had stickers and impenetrable tinting of everything and everyone. In this form and without any signs of state registration plates, even "transit" ones, Supra and I went to my house in the northern suburbs. But we had a kind of cover - a smoke screen created by a battered engine, two turbochargers of which mercilessly poured oil into the inlet and outlet.

The first adventures began already at the Moscow Ring Road. We are driving ourselves quietly in the second row on the left, we approach the traffic police post, and suddenly one of the servants of the law rushes through two rows and waves me a striped stick, inviting me to stop. Considering appearance own car, I was not even surprised at this situation. I pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the inspector to approach. But he was in no hurry to congratulate me on my purchase, so after a minute of waiting I had to get out of the car myself, fortunately, Supra's doors open very wide and there are handles on both front roof pillars for a more convenient landing and disembarkation. I went up to the traffic cop, stood next to him for half a minute and realized that he was not going to stop me at all. And he was not waving his wand to me, but to a wagon that was driving in the next lane just behind me.

Of course, such bright car like the Toyota Supra, law enforcement officers try to stop at every opportunity. But the most amazing thing is that in the first year of ownership of Supra, almost every traffic cop told me when they met:

- O! I had the same! What year is it?

However, not only employees traffic police, but ordinary people also show increased attention to Supra. Previously, I was often asked questions like: "Can I take a picture with this machine?" or "What model is this?" and, of course, almost everyone was interested in "How much can you buy this?" In the first week of owning the Supra, a curious incident happened to me. One evening, on the threshold of my apartment, I found a guy and a girl who unanimously asked if I was selling my "car with zippers." And they were surprised when I told them that I bought it myself just a couple of days ago. Apparently, one of the well-wishing neighbors decided to play a trick on me.

On the day of buying a car, after a funny meeting with a traffic cop and returning home, another, but not very funny story happened to me. Having parked the Supra under the window, I moved to my other car - then I still had a Mazda 323F, also "blind", like the Supra, and went to my friends. And when I returned home, I did not reach 15 meters in the literal sense - I had an accident! Woman on Nissan note I sharply backed up on the oncoming shoulder and did not notice my bright red Mazda crossing the same bumpy shoulder when turning left. I was lucky at least that "323rd" got off with a slight fright and that I could wait for the traffic cops at home, drinking tea with jam. The woman was eventually found guilty of the accident, and I was fully paid insurance for replacing the right front wing... Everything in our world is balanced. And the joy of buying one car can immediately overshadow the damage to another.

Then, 7 years ago, every step caused difficulties. For example, which motor to choose - 2JZ-GTE or 1UZ-FE? Simply put, turbocharged inline-six or naturally aspirated V8? I almost immediately abandoned plans to resurrect and refine the "native" 1G-GTE engine - it's too thankless to do this. And in the end he chose 2JZ - the legendary Toyota three-liter engine, the "native" insides of which (pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft) are capable of withstanding power up to 1,000 hp. And this despite the fact that the nominal power of the 2JZ-GTE is only 280-330 hp. depending on the specification. Not a single automaker has been producing motors with such a huge margin of safety for a long time.

The engine for my Supra, by the way, came from Vladivostok (however, it was without two solenoids for controlling turbochargers and with one cracked ignition coil, but these are trifles), and the five-speed mechanical box transmissions of the W58 series - from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Dreams of Supra

You know, it often happens when you think about something for a long time, then this thing will surely sooner or later enter your sleep. I often thought about Supra, but all dreams with her participation boiled down to only one thing: I drive it somewhere - on the road or on the race track, it doesn't matter - and my brakes fail all the time on the go! That the standard single-piston disc brakes on all four wheels of my Supra in the GA70 version are not at all effective, I realized almost immediately and without a dream prompt. At the same time, the stock brakes also overheated after only two or three intensive braking.

Of course, as soon as the opportunity turned up, I bought front ventilated discs and "large" (an option for the Supr fourth generation) four-piston calipers from the newer "eightieth" Supra and immediately sent them to the installation. After all, this is one of the most best options changes in the brakes of the "seventy" in terms of price / quality ratio.

Yes, before I did not ponder over my dreams and tried not to attach importance to them: "Well, the brakes fail, so what? You never know what stupidity can dream." But after I saw the old front brakes of my car, I became thoughtful. On the left brake disc there was a huge crack that could lead to its destruction and accident literally at any minute. And six months later, the brake master cylinder also "died" ...

Three services, or a story about how I was almost disappointed in people

I confess that I did not carry out all the modifications with my own hands. I disassembled the interior, lightened the car, changed the engine and gearbox, and then the lack of money began and the Supra had to stand for a long time in the garage, waiting for its owner to find a normal job. And when my finances finally bounced back, two other critical elements disappeared - time and enthusiasm. I confess that at times seditious thoughts about selling a car crept in, but Sasha, my girlfriend, always dissuaded me from this venture, for which she would like to thank her very much. It is now Supras in the back of the A70 periodically still creep out onto the roads common use and shine on the sites of car ads, but after 10 years they will not remain on sale at all.

As a result, the money and enthusiasm returned to me, but over time it was still tense. I had to take Supra to the service of my then friend Sergei Filatov, known in drifting circles under the nickname Filser. Sergey spliced wiring for several cars from the RDS championship, which gave him some hope and confidence in the professionalism of an electrician. But life once again decided to teach me a lesson. Sergei, despite the fact that we had known each other for a long time, and even taking into account the impressive sum of money, namely 30,000 rubles, which I gave him for the work done, fulfilled his obligations as a typical businessman, that is, for six months, almost nothing of the planned work did. Taking Supra, I barely drove it to my house, after which it flatly refused to start (this is Toyota, it will always make it to the house). On the phone, Sergei immediately reassured me and promised to come to my garage and fix everything next weekend. But after that call, I have never seen Sergei again in my life.

It so inappropriately coincided that almost at the same time when Supra returned (or rather, literally crawled) home, a friend of mine opened his own car service. He needed orders, and out of the kindness of my heart I decided to give him a chance to revive my car and fix everything that Seryozha had done to it. It all ended, as you already understood, again deplorably. Yes, the car started to start at the very least, got new brakes (I talked about them above) and wheels, but on the whole it was in the same sad state: Troilus, twitching convulsively and not falling sideways at all. And Supra again had to go home in a tow truck ...

When I learned that a specialized service dedicated to Supras had appeared in Moscow, hope rekindled in me. But before taking my long-suffering coupe to the guys from BM-Performance, I made a promise to myself that if they also fail, then I will never, never take any of my cars to any service. But the guys did it!

I will say more, it was damn nice to see Andrei Mykita - the owner of the service and part-time the same "supramaniac" like me, works with my car. He lovingly soldered every wire in the engine scythe, checked every ignition coil, swapped parts of my car with parts from other test subjects to pinpoint the exact cause of engine problems. And most importantly - almost every day I reported changes in the state of health of my beloved Supra. Andrey returned my faith that there are still people for whom their work is not just a way to quickly earn money for a living, but a debt and a matter of honor. Andrey, if you are reading these lines, thank you very much.

Friends are not bought or sold

Do you know what is most important? Supra helped me find new friends. Old sports cars generally attract only two types of people: cunning gopniks and real car enthusiasts. I think it won't be difficult for anyone to distinguish the first type from the second?

And of course, Supra itself became a real friend to me. Yes, it's time-worn and nearly impossible to drive on our damn roads due to the Cusco's brutal sports suspension, ultra-low-profile tires and an almost completely absent interior. And yes, she still needs tens of thousands of rubles, hundreds of man-hours of work and an immeasurable amount of enthusiasm. But if I just look out the window, take a quick glance at these crazy angular-rounded shapes from the 80s, which have not yet been influenced by modern requirements for passive safety and caring for suicidal pedestrians, and a smile immediately involuntarily appears on my face. And the ability to induce a smile, as you know, is the most important characteristic car.

Next time someone tells you Toyota can't do interesting cars, don't believe him. He just didn't drive such models as Celica, Mark II, Levin, MR-2, GT 86. Cars with a capital letter like Toyota Supra. And to hell with him, she really looks a bit like a Ferrari.

Sales market: Japan. Right hand drive

The first generation Toyota Supra was released in 1978, in response to the Datsun models Fairlady Z, at that time still modification Toyota Celica. Third generation Toyota The Supra (A70), which entered the market in 1986, became a completely separate model from Celica. The main features are a three-door rigid body, independent suspension, rear-wheel drive and in-line six-cylinder engine under the hood. It can be variations of the 2-liter 1G unit, naturally aspirated or turbocharged (twin turbo), or the 3.0-liter flagship 7M-GTEU turbo engine. For the 1986-1988 Supra, the suggested power range was 105 to 230 hp.

Developing a new generation of the car in the mid-80s, the Japanese tried to equip it not only with all the essentials, but also with advanced technologies at that time, like ABS systems and TEMS, and not at the expense of the price, which was very competitive. A characteristic feature top-end configurations steel leather interior, climate control and high-quality audio system, digital dashboard etc. The Supra shared the same platform with the JDM Toyota Soarer Z20, except that the Supra wheelbase noticeably shorter (by 75 mm), so the back is quite cramped, and the sofa is molded strictly for two. But on the other hand, the driver has the ability to customize the most comfortable fit, with tilt / reach adjustment of the steering wheel and many seat adjustments, including lumbar and lateral support, fully adjustable headrest, height and leg angle adjustment.

Toyota Supra A70 attracts attention with three types of 2-liter 1G engine (SOHC, DOHC, DOHC twin turbo). The greatest advantage of this generation of the model was the 3-liter 7M engine with DOHC and turbocharging. The basic unit was a 1G-EU - 12-valve 105-horsepower. More powerful modification 1G-GEU with four valves per cylinder and two camshafts developed 140 "forces". The turbo version of the base "six" - 1G-GTE - had a power reserve of 185 "horses". Top Supra models (as well as the Soarer) received a 3.0-liter 230-horsepower 7M-GTEU turbo engine, which, compared to its standard 200-horsepower naturally aspirated version of the 7M-GE from Crown, had a relatively small increase in "horses", but the maximum of the power and torque curve shifted 400-800 rpm lower. It can be noted that all of these motors are considered exemplary reliable.

The Supra A70 was equipped with double wishbone suspension at the front and rear. To reduce weight, some of the nodes were made of aluminum, and the rods were attached to subframes to minimize vibration in the cabin. The arsenal had a TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension) system - electronic system suspension control, which allows you to change the damping stiffness, improving the car's behavior depending on conditions, and in Sport mode, reducing lateral rolls body and "nose peck" when braking. The car was equipped with a power steering and fully disc brakes, while in more powerful versions, not only the front brakes, but also the rear ones were ventilated. In terms of body dimensions and other nuances, the car corresponded to the requests of the internal Japanese market... Its dimensions were 4620 x 1690 x 1310 mm (L x W x H), and the dimensions of the cabin were 1720 x 1400 x 1070 mm. Rear drive and a wheelbase of 2595 mm provided Toyota Supra with a minimum turning radius of 5.4 m. rear seats fold up in parts, increasing the volume to 315 liters, if necessary, allowing you to transport long items.

Toyota Supra has a body with increased rigidity that meets the safety requirements of its time. The car could be equipped with anti-lock braking system, which in the early years of the generation was an option. In 1987, a modification appeared with a removable roof (targa) between the front and rear struts - this car received additional body reinforcement; in Japan this modification was called Aero top, in other markets - Targa top and Sport roof.

The sports capabilities of Toyota Supra may be modest in comparison with the real combat "supercars" of those years, but in a charged state and in the presence of "mechanics" the car looks very dignified. In the 90s, it was imported relatively massively, although the owners' addiction to speed has decently reduced the population. Supra provides excellent tuning opportunities, and the problem of finding the main spare parts is solved by the relationship with numerous others. Toyota models... The body of the car is quite strong, but still requires a thorough check - such cars a priori are more likely to get into accidents.

Initially, the Supra lettering appeared on sporty toyota 2000GT, which was introduced in 1967. The Celica Supra entered the market in 1979. Both models with SUPRA attachments differed from their counterparts without the attachment in more powerful engines and richer equipment. Take a look at the photos of the first Supras. The first independent Toyota Supra was shown in May 1986. The car was created according to the classic FR layout, which stands for: Front Engine - front engine arrangement and Rear Wheels Drive - rear drive wheels. Modification 7M-GTEU with a 265 engine Horse power was the fastest Japanese car, before the release of R32. Toyota Supra in question in this review received an index - 70. The numbers 70 are preceded by letter designations - these can be: MA, GA, JZA. Letter designation indicates the engine is installed on this car(more on this in the section "Technical part and characteristics".

Appearance:

Toyota Supra 70 is offered in two body types: coupe and targa, which appeared in 1991. Targo is called a two-door body, with the upper part of the roof that can be removed, take a look at the photo. The headlights in the Supra are extended, which is generally in line with the automotive fashion of those years. In comparison with the previous model - Toyota Supra Celica, the seventy has become 41mm shorter, 25mm wider and 11mm lower. Post-styling cars (Restayl - 1988) are distinguished by altered turn signals, dimensions, as well as lower fog lights. On cars intended for the United States and for the domestic market in Japan, the rear lamp panel and the recess for the license plate have become a single element, but we are talking only about Japanese women and American women, because they have a square niche for the rear license plate. From the Toyota Supra 70 factory she put on 225/50 R16 tires.

Salon:

A modification with a 1JZ-GTE engine with a capacity of 276 horsepower was already equipped with a Recaro cabin from the factory. In 1991, a new steering wheel began to be installed on the Supras, and two years earlier, the rear seat received three-point seat belts. Our drivers will appreciate the Supra's boot with a full size spare wheel. The trunk of Toyota Supra holds 280 liters.

Technical part and characteristics of Supra 70

Most Toyota Supra 70 fans associate with turbo engines, but the base units do not give the car the agility that the wedge-shaped body hints at. The basic naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 1G-EU engine produces only 105 horsepower, in 1990 it was replaced by a 1G-FE engine with 135 horsepower and 180 N.M of torque. The more powerful 1G-GTEU produces 185 horsepower and 245 Newtons of torque, but the turbocharged engines 3.0 and 2.5 liters are considered the most legendary. The 7M-GE inline three-liter six produces 204bhp, while the turbocharged version of the same engine, the 7M-GTE, delivers 235bhp and 334NM of thrust. Turbo Supra 3.0t gains one hundred kilometers per hour in 6.2s, and it takes 14.7s to cover a distance of 402 meters. Legendary motor 1JZ-GTE with a capacity of 276hp and a torque of 363N.M allows you to accelerate to a hundred in less than 6 seconds, it will take 13.8s to travel 402 meters of the Supra with a 1JZ-GTE. The 1JZ-GTE has a volume of 2.5 liters and is equipped with two turbochargers. Let us emphasize that Yamaha specialists helped Toyota during the development of the cylinder head for the 1JZ-GTE. There was a modification of the 7M-GTEU with a capacity of 263hp, it differed from the three-liter turbo 7M-GTE with an enlarged intercooler and an oil cooling system in the engine. A total of 500 Supras were assembled with the 7M-GTEU engine. Supras were equipped with five and six-speed manual transmissions, as well as four-speed automatic transmissions. Since most of these cars were sold in the United States, the share of the Toyota Supra 70 with automatic is quite significant.

Let's pay attention technical specifications Toyota Supra 70 with 2.5 twinturbo, manual transmission. It should be understood that cars with 1JZ were not officially supplied either to the USA or to Europe, therefore, initially all Supras with 1JZ are right-hand drive.

Price

The price of a Toyota Supra 70 can vary a lot, from nothing for a fully rolled copy to a very impressive cost. The price of a well-kept Toyota Supra 70 will hardly be below $ 10,000.

Some car enthusiasts who really don't own these cars think Skyline gtr a more iconic name than Supra.
The same people who had the experience of communicating with both the first and the second car will hardly be able to agree with this. Let Supra not all-wheel drive but her powerful, turbocharged JZs have made her a legend. The Seventieth Supra at the time of its appearance was the most fast car Japan.

Take a look at the photo of the Supra 70. It was created in the spirit of its time: in 1986, when it first entered the assembly line, the rising headlights were very popular, you must admit that even today such machines look very impressive. The "targa" looks even cooler, this is the name of a car with a removable top.

The Supra 70 is equipped with a full-size spare wheel, which means that this is not just a racing equipment, but a very comfortable car, perhaps even for every day. In 1989, the rear seats began to be equipped with three-point belts, but it is possible that the belts will already be changed on the car you like.

You can buy Toyota Supra 70 today for $ 7,000. But here everything very much depends on the work done on the car, some - the killed copies can be cheaper, and some much more expensive.

Specifications Toyota Supra 70

Supras are often found with naturally aspirated engines, but the turbocharged JZ-GTE with a volume of 2.5 liters enjoys the greatest respect. Such an engine, thanks to two turbines, develops 276 hp, which is very much even today, and in the early 90s such a machine was just an airplane. It is worth noting here that in those years, Toyota worked closely with Yamaha, and it was the motorcycle company that helped Toyota in creating a new, 24-valve head for the JZ.

Until 1990, a three-liter, Trumped 7M-GTE was produced, despite the larger volume in comparison with the JZ, it develops 263hp, and its atmospheric version produces 204hp, which is also quite a lot.

Today such a car can be bought for quite real money, but do you need such a car? - I think that most of you definitely do not ... It is beautiful and powerful, such a car is needed only by the one who takes care of it, because the one who will roll it again, due to its age and mileage, the Supra 70 may simply not be able to stand it ...
