Are you crazy? Are you going to drive half of Russia with this car? Oh well.
I heard such phrases from my friends and readers when I announced my participation in the 9,000-kilometer car rally on the new product. Russian car industry- Datsun on-DO.
- Yes, I'm going, why not? And why is this so surprising to you?
- It's a VAZ car, a dubious idea ...
Unfortunately, many years of dislike and distrust of many people to the "people's automaker" have become so ossified that by default they are ready to consider all the cars that AvtoVAZ produces as low-quality and bad, even without ever sitting in the driver's or passenger seat... AvtoVAZ? That's it, you shouldn't expect anything worthwhile from him.
In fact, everything is not nearly as bad as many are used to imagine.
Datsun on-DO, or as it is also called "Japanese Grant", turned out to be very good - a 15-day test drive, during which we drove 9 thousand kilometers through 25 subjects Russian Federation lets me state it with complete confidence.

2. You can add up the idea of a particular machine different ways... You can read an article in a reputable journal or on a specialized website, you can look commercials, you can go to a car dealership to look under the hood, into the salon or sit behind the wheel, you can sign up for a test drive and drive a few kilometers, you can listen to the opinions of other people, specialists or owners of a particular car ...
Or you can get behind the wheel and, in real operation, drive through half of Russia in order to form a full-fledged idea of what kind of horse is under you.
We received our Datsun On-Do in the Trust III configuration at the dealership in Barnaul on November 10, 2014 and on the same day set off for a 15-day motor rally through Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kurgan, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Samara, Tolyatti, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Tambov, Ryazan, Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Tver, Velikiye Luki, Pskov to finish on December 25 in St. Petersburg.

3. What is Datsun on-DO and where did it come from in our market?
The Datsun company appeared 100 years ago in Osaka, becoming, in fact, the progenitor of modern Nissan, into which it finally transformed in the period from 1981 to 1986.
But in 2012, the revival of the brand was announced, which will be presented exclusively in the local and most dynamically developing markets - Russia, India, Indonesia and South Africa.
In each of these countries, Datsun has organized the production of models specially designed taking into account the peculiarities and specifics of a particular country.
In Russia, Datsun launched the production of the onDo model, which is presented in the niche of inexpensive people's cars and is designed to compete with the products of the Chinese car industry and Lada.

4. Technically Datsun on-Do is a car built on the Lada Granta platform with numerous technical changes and design developed in the Japanese Nissan Design Center.
Front and rear track as well as wheelbase, match up to a millimeter. And it is produced on the same conveyor of the Togliatti plant.
What is the difference between Datsun on-DO and Lada Granta? The biggest changes were in the gearbox, suspension comfort and handling.
The box here is mechanical, the same as that of Grants, however, Japanese engineers made a number of changes to it aimed at improving its operation - used cable drive, which reduces the level of noise and vibrations, as well as the quality of gear shifting, the profile of the teeth of the 2nd gear, the main pair and reverse gear, which led to a decrease in transmission noise, and also eliminated the traditional VAZ problems when switching on the 2nd and reverse gears
I must say that the gearbox was a pleasant surprise: comfortably long 3rd and 4th gears allow you to drive around the city almost in automatic mode. Separately, it should be said about the dynamics of the car. She really rides! Such dynamics are not at all expected from a 1.6-liter engine with only 87 hp.
On the highway, we had to overtake long-length trucks many times, with the need to quickly complete overtaking due to an approaching oncoming vehicle. You push the pedal to the floor at 120 km / h and the Datsun responds quite cheerfully by pressing it, quickly increasing the speed. It is very pleasant to know that even at a rather high speed for this car, they have a reserve of power.

5. Now about the Datsun suspension and its differences from the base Grants.
Compared to the platform, Datsun now has gas-filled shock absorbers, which provide greater comfort when driving on uneven roads, low rolls and minimal swing on the waves, which, by the way, we fully experienced on the 4th day of our trip, turning beyond Ufa from federal highway and having driven about 300 kilometers along not the most good roads, of which about 40 kilometers fell on a dirt-washed dirt road, more like an off-road test site than a road.
Engineers have changed the characteristics of the springs and stabilizers lateral stability while aiming to improve ride and handling balance. In addition, compared to the Grant, the Datsun has a gearless electric power steering.
We and Vesa did not have any complaints about the handling of the car: the car drives perfectly both in the city in dense city traffic, and on the highway at high speeds, and on dirt roads where required active work steering wheel.
Like Grant, Datsun has a significant trump card for the domestic consumer - high ground clearance

6. Engineers also took care of adapting the machine to winter conditions exploitation.
Datsun has heated front seats in the base, air ducts to the legs rear passengers, as well as optional heated mirrors and heated windshield.
In general, it is surprising that some cars made in Russia and for Russia do not have these, in my opinion, mandatory options for our country.
Also in the Datsun base it is equipped with an ABS system (with EBD and Brake Assist systems, manufactured by Bosch), which is also very important for operation in winter conditions.
There were several moments on our way when we had to urgently brake, including on slippery road, and ABS worked very clearly, not allowing us to "lose" the car.
If we talk about the safety of the car, then in the base it is equipped with frontal airbags for the driver and passenger, belt pretensioners and ISOFIX mounts.
V maximum configuration also installed side front airbags

7. The line of Datsun engines is short, or rather there are only two of them - 1.6 liter with 82 hp. (only in basic configuration Access) and 87 hp. (for all other configurations)
I have already said a couple of flattering words about the pleasantly pleased 87-horsepower engine. It is really dynamic and elastic, it confidently pulls the 1160-kg sedan with driver and passenger.
Compared to Grant, the engineers took care of additional noise insulation of the engine shield and the hood, increased the noise insulation of the cabin floor, trunk and wheel arches from the inside.
In addition, Nissan minders performed engine calibrations with improved stability. idle move, installed a flexible exhaust system bellows and moved the rear attachment point exhaust system on the spar. All this made the car significantly quieter than the base Grant.

8. How much?
Datsun on-DO is sold only in fixed configurations, of which there are already seven!
The basic version of Access for 329 thousand rubles has an 82-horsepower 1.6 engine, and a minimum of options (which, however, includes a driver's airbag, ABS, electric power steering, heated seats, tilt steering, Isofix mounts and the entire folding back of the rear sofa). The manufacturer makes the main bet on the Trust configuration (there are three of them) at a price of 355 to 389 thousand rubles. They have the same 87-horsepower engine on which we were traveling, and the equipment includes two airbags, fog lights, central locking, body-colored bumpers, an on-board computer, power mirrors and front windows. Trust II for 379 thousand additionally includes climate control, and Trust III for 389 thousand in on-DO - a 2-DIN radio with USB / SD inputs and Bluetooth protocol.
Top Dream configurations additionally include remote control of the central lock, rear power windows, separately folding backseat and preparation for the Hands Free kit (400 thousand), Dream II - light and rain sensors, as well as a 7-inch navigation system (430 thousand), and the maximum Dream III - heated windshield and rear-view mirrors, 4 airbags and a standard parking sensor (445 thousand).
In my opinion, price policy the models are very competent: the basic Datsun is not much more expensive than Lada Grant, and all other configurations are comfortably located on the empty territory between the Ladas and Renault Logan / Sandero.

9. From technology, let's move on to the interior and ergonomics, because many users are less interested in technical subtleties and more in what will surround them every day during the operation of the car.
Inside, it is unexpectedly cozy - the Grant front panel was refined with a new center console, and silver lining appeared on the steering wheel hub.
The arrangement of knobs and buttons was not changed, the devices are structurally the same, but the scales themselves have been changed for better readability, as well as in terms of style.
Very good at Datsun chairs! Frankly, before the start of the race, I was much more worried not about what the technology or the reliability of the car would let down, but about the fact that my back and body would hate me for this trip. Yes, during the 15 days of the journey, considerable fatigue has accumulated, but neither the back, nor the shoulders, nor the neck have ever ached, although we have had daily runs of 1000 kilometers. So special thanks for the seats!

10. The plastic in the cabin is hard, but there are no squeaks or knocks due to the tight fit of the panels. The knobs and switches are convenient, everything is at hand, the climate control is understandable (although it is not entirely complete - only the fan speed is automatically regulated, and the flows must be controlled independently).

11. The machine is equipped with a clear and readable on-board computer, the control button of which is located at the end of the right steering column switch. It shows daily mileage, average and instant fuel consumption, overboard temperature, coolant temperature, fuel and travel, as well as travel time
By the way, I put this photo for a reason. Here the computer just shows the average fuel consumption for all 9 thousand kilometers of our rally. It turned out 6.3 liters per 100 km. Not bad, considering that we drove quite a lot on the highway at a speed of more than 120 km / h.

12. Mirrors. They are large and excellent visibility.
Starting with the Trust versions, on-DO is equipped with electric mirrors, helping in their setting, and in the maximum configuration and their heating.

13. Legroom for both the driver and front passenger quite enough. There is much to do with your legs even when you sit in a chair for many hours.

14. External lighting is good enough - both near and high beam headlights are bright enough and well illuminate the road ahead of the car. Fog lights in Trust versions are good helper on unlit roads, highlighting areas directly in front of the car (which is very convenient when driving on dirt roads and rough terrain at low speeds)

15. Ergonomics of the driver's seat.
In my opinion, this is one of the most controversial decisions of constructors.
Two cup holders-pocket, 12-volt socket and buttons for heated seats, in my opinion, are arranged very poorly.
Firstly, the cigarette lighter socket turned out to be such that not only the splitter was trying to fall out of it all the time (yes, it is rather bulky), but also just charging the navigator.
In addition, if something is plugged into this socket (and nowadays something is on there all the time - a navigator, charging a smartphone or powering a video recorder), then putting a half-liter bottle or a glass of coffee in a cup holder is very inconvenient - they are with wires simply interfere with each other.
In addition, using the seat heating buttons located closer to the console will also be inconvenient.

16. But besides the jacks on the console, there is nowhere to put a bottle of water in the cabin ...
The pockets in the door cards are not intended for this and the bottle can only be pushed there "by force"

17. It will look like this

18. But the shelf above the glove box turned out to be a very good solution.
Due to the fact that the lid of the drawer is intentionally slightly raised above the shelf, this is just the perfect place for a mobile phone or small items that need to be put somewhere during the trip.

19. However, it is worth considering that if you open the lid, the side automatically disappears and items from your shelf may fall into the glove compartment ..

20. The air ducts are very well thought out, thanks to which in 15 days we did not encounter the problem of fogging glasses at all. And in general, it is very comfortable to be in the cabin - there is no need to constantly make it warmer and colder - the "climate" works perfectly.

21. Datsun on-DO has a huge trunk. Yes, because of this, the feed of the car looks a little too big, but 530 liters of volume !!!
There is more than a meter to the back of the rear sofa, and the height is very decent. By the way, interesting detail- a full-size wheel is hidden in the spare wheel niche. And the tires here are not Kama, like the Grants, but Pirelli P1 Cinturato.

22. The trunk of Datsun can be opened either with an inconspicuous button under the light control unit on the front panel, or ... with a key. You won't be able to do it just with a button. Inconvenient.
To close the trunk, one of the niches is closed with a special plastic insert-handle. But if you don't look under the trunk lid, you can't see it. It seems to me that a regular loop, which is always visible, would be much more convenient.

23. Another comment concerns the fuel tank hatch and cover. The fact that the cap was fixed on a special flexible leash is good. But why didn't they make a fastener on the hatch to fix the lid while refueling the car?
Indeed, during the operation of the machine, the cover will definitely "rub" the bald patches on the roof. And it stains the paint with petrol stains too.

24. In general, in my opinion, the Russian Datsun turned out to be a pretty good car, even if it was built on the basis of the Lada Granta.
A significant factor that can outweigh a potential buyer is Datsun's on-DO after-sales service. Indeed, unlike Lada Granta, it will be produced not at AvtoVAZ TO stations, but in dealerships Datsun, which, as a rule, have a common service base with Nissan and are located, as a rule, behind the wall of Nissan service stations. Datsun service center specialists undergo training according to programs and standards of Nissan, as a parent company, so the level of service should be an order of magnitude higher than the owner Grant and Kalin are used to.
By the way, sales of Datsun hatchbacks, as well as versions with an automatic transmission, should start in February, which makes this car even more attractive to the buyer.

The taillights and the dipped or high beam are on, depending on the switch position.

In the Design version, in this position, the taillights and dipped headlights are switched on and off automatically depending on the lighting conditions. The sun sensor combined with the rain sensor is located on the windshield under the rearview mirror.

The outdoor lighting control system (lighting system) allows you to turn on / off the taillights and dipped headlights depending on the level of outside lighting. For example, lighting fixtures turn on at dusk or when entering a tunnel or garage.

The outdoor lighting control system works only when the ignition is on. It should be remembered that when the external lighting control system is on, the main beam of the headlights cannot be turned on for a long time. To turn on the high beam headlights for a long time, it is necessary to set the switch for the control system for external lighting devices to the low beam position.

ATTENTION The moment when the outdoor lighting is switched on by the outdoor lighting control system may not meet the safety requirements. Therefore, the use of this system does not relieve the driver of the need to comply with safety precautions and traffic rules.

Headlight range control switch (for some vehicle variants)

Depending on the number of passengers in the cabin and the weight of the transported cargo, in some cases the headlight beam may be directed too high. When driving on hilly terrain, the headlights can have a dazzling effect on both drivers of passing vehicles (through the rearview mirror) and drivers of oncoming vehicles. The center of the headlamp beam can be lowered using a corrector located on the front panel next to the steering column.

The higher the number on the regulator, the more tilted the light beam.

Installation of the corrector adjuster outside the scale may lead to a mis-synchronization of the angles of inclination of light beams of the dipped beam of the right and left headlights.

ATTENTION- Correct adjustment the inclination of the headlights reduces the degree of glare for oncoming traffic. - To avoid poor illumination of the roadway, do not set the corrector control to the extreme clockwise position.

Direction indicator lever

I. Neutral position: the dipped headlights are on if the headlights have been switched on with the outside lighting switch.

II. Left direction indicators are included in the non-fixed position.

III. Left direction indicators are included in a fixed position.

IV. Right direction indicators are included in the non-fixed position.

V. Right direction indicators are included in a fixed position.

Vi. The driver pulls the lever towards himself (signaling with headlights). The main beam of the headlights turns on regardless of the position of the switch for external lighting devices. Non-fixed position.

Vii. The driver pushes the lever away from him. The main beam of the headlights is on if the headlights have been switched on with the switch of external lighting devices. Fixed position.

Rear fog lamp

The rear fog lamp should only be used in conditions of very limited visibility (generally less than 100 m).

To turn on the rear fog lamp, set the exterior lighting switch to position (for some vehicle variants) and press the rear fog lamp switch. The rear fog lamp and the corresponding indicator come on. To turn off the rear fog lamp, press the switch again.

Fog lights (for some vehicle variants)

To turn on the fog lights, set the exterior lighting switch to position (for some vehicle versions) and press the fog light switch. The fog lights and the corresponding indicator light up. Press the switch again to turn off the fog lights.

Window wiper and washer switch

I. Neutral position. Windshield wiper and washer off.

II. The windscreen wiper runs intermittently. Non-fixed position.

III. The windscreen wiper runs intermittently. Fixed position.

IV. The windshield wiper is running at a low speed. Fixed position.

V. The windshield wiper is running at high speed. Fixed position.

Vi. The driver pulls the lever towards himself, the windshield washer works. Non-fixed position.

Vii. The driver pushes the lever away from him, the rear window cleaner works. Fixed position.

VIII. The driver pushes the lever away from him, the rear window wiper and washer are working. Non-fixed position.

In intermittent mode, the interval between sweeping of the wiper arms is several seconds, regardless of the presence of drops on the windshield.

Rain and sunlight sensor (for some vehicle variants)

In the Design version, the vehicle is equipped with a combined rain and sunlight sensor.

It is located on the windshield under the rearview mirror.

CAUTION For proper operation of the windscreen wiper and the system automatic control Use external lighting to keep the area of the windshield in front of the rain and sunlight sensor clean and monitor the condition of the wiper blades.

Automatic wiper control system (for some vehicle variants)

In the Design version, the vehicle is equipped with an automatic wiper control system. It automatically activates the wiper depending on the presence of rain drops on the windshield.

WARNING The automatic wiper control system is recommended to be used only when it is raining, as the system is very sensitive to dust particles, fog, snow or deicing agents and can activate the wiper when the windshield is dry.

The automatic wiper control system works only when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position. To turn on the automatic wiper control system, it is necessary to turn the rain sensor switch, located in the sensor housing under the rear-view mirror, from position 0 to any position from 1 to 4 (a four-stage rain sensor sensitivity adjustment is provided; the extreme right position of the switch (position 4) corresponds to the maximum sensitivity ) and the windscreen wiper control lever is in position III (intermittent operation). In this case, the wiper levers will make one swing, after which they will stop or continue working depending on the number of rain drops on the windshield.

If at this point the wiper has already been turned on, then after the next ignition on, the wiper levers will make one swing, after which the automatic wiper control system will turn on.

In the event of a malfunction, the system will automatically switch to "manual" control mode.

To disable automatic system control the wiper and activate the "manual" control mode, set the rain sensor switch to position 0 (extreme left position). In this mode, the wiper control lever can be manually moved to the desired position.

When the ignition is turned off, the wiper is turned off. The wiper blades go into the "parked" state.

If at the moment the ignition is turned off, the wiper was continuous mode, the wiper blades may stop in a position other than the parked position. To set the wiper blades to the "parking" position, set the wiper control lever to position I or III no later than 30 seconds after turning off the ignition.

Regularly remove dirt, deicing and bitumen deposits from the glass and rubber blades of the wiper blades with a washer fluid. Remains of insects, grease, wax and other contaminants on the windshield can cause the wiper to malfunction and cause streaks to appear on the glass surface. If streaks cannot be removed with washer fluid, clean the glass and rubber blades of the brushes with a soft cloth and special detergents. After cleaning, wash the glass and rubber blades with water.

CAUTION - To avoid damage, do not operate the windshield wiper when the bonnet is open. - Do not open the bonnet lock or lift the bonnet with the wiper arms raised. - Do not operate the wiper when the windshield surface is dry. Failure to do so may result in scratches on the windshield and damage to the wiper blades. If the glass surface is dry, turn on the washer before turning on the wipers. - If the wiper blades are frozen to the glass, then before turning on the wiper, you must first turn on the heated windshield (for some vehicle versions) and make sure that the blades are thawed. Attempting to turn on the wiper, the brushes of which are frozen to the glass, may damage the rubber blade of the brush and increased wear on the wiper motor - Do not clean the rubber blade of the brush with benzine or thinner; this will damage the blade - Do not run the washer continuously for more than 15 seconds .- Do not operate the washer if there is no fluid in the reservoir or if it is frozen. - At low temperatures, fluid on the windshield can freeze and obstruct visibility. Before using the washer, it is recommended to warm up the windshield by turning on the heated windscreen (for some vehicle variants).
